PHR Playoff Primer: Dallas Stars vs. Seattle Kraken

With the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs now underway, PHR makes its first foray into playoff series analysis with our 2023 Playoff Primers. Where does each team stand in their series, and what storylines could dominate on and off the ice? We begin our second-round coverage with the Western Conference matchup between the Dallas Stars and Seattle Kraken.

The Seattle fanbase waited a long time for a team to cheer for and the Seattle Kraken have given them something to cheer about in just their second season by knocking off the defending Stanley Cup champions in seven games. The Dallas Stars on the other hand were able to dispatch of the Minnesota Wild in just six games on the back of incredible goaltending from Jake Oettinger. Their second-round matchup will mark the first time the two teams have met in the playoffs.

What a difference a season makes. A year ago, Kraken general manager Ron Francis looked as though he’d butchered the expansion draft as Seattle finished near the bottom of the NHL standings. But, fast forward one year later and the Kraken have their first 100-point season, a playoff series victory, and the opportunity for more.  For Dallas, they are just three years removed from a Stanley Cup finals appearance in which they lost in six games to the Tampa Bay Lightning. While the Stars do still have several of the core pieces from that 2020 team, they’ve added a lot of elite young talent to mix in with their older core pieces.

It’s hard to get excited for a series in which the two teams have never met in the playoffs before, but Dallas quietly had one of the most exciting series of the first round, and Seattle provided ample fireworks of their own. This series might not have the draw that some other series may have, but there will be plenty of star power on the ice for Dallas, while Seattle has one of the most balanced lineups in the entire NHL and can outwork almost any team.

Dallas takes the season series 2-0-1

Team Storylines

One might not think these teams would have much in the way of a rivalry, however for ten days in mid-March they saw a lot of each other. The teams played three times and developed a bit of hate in that time. While a lot has happened since then, there could be carryover.

The biggest storyline in this series will be the high-end skill of the Dallas Stars against the workmanlike attitude of the Seattle Kraken. Dallas has the offense and the goaltending to make a deep run in these playoffs and have much higher expectations than the Kraken, however Seattle has shown an incredible amount of heart this season and are playing with house money at this point. Sometimes the pressure can cause a team to wilt, and sometimes no pressure at all can make a team play fast and loose. It’ll be interesting to see it play out.

The Dallas Stars play with a ton of skill and a ton of speed, led by Jason Robertson, they can put the puck in your net in several ways and can push the pace, or slow down the game if they need to grind out a win. They still possess Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and a few other players from the 2020 run to the finals that know how to get the job done in the playoffs. They have the confidence in their group and their goalie to get it done. Seattle on the other can also play with a lot of pace, they come at you in waves, line after line can contribute on the offensive end. Every line can score, but they don’t have the gamebreakers that Dallas has.

On the backend, both teams have strong blue lines that can help generate offense. Seattle has the size advantage with a couple of towering forces that can crash and bang and clear the front of the net, but Dallas may possess the strength advantage with a physically imposing lineup in which every man in the unit is over six foot. Dallas has the most elite puck mover in Miro Heiskanen, but this year’s version of Vince Dunn isn’t far off, and Seattle has a better collection of point producers and a deeper unit of six. While the Stars defense can do it all, Seattle’s defense can all do it. Coach Dave Hakstol has somehow managed to spread his defensive minutes about as evenly as you will ever see for a defensive unit. I would give the advantage to Seattle in this area as they seem to find an extra gear late in games and have a good track record of shutting the door on their opponents.

In goal, Dallas boasts one of the best goaltenders in the world in Jake Oettinger. His playoff resume is short, but it is strong. He was dominant in the first round, and should he play at that level in this series, Dallas will be tough to beat. Regular season numbers would tell us that Oettinger gives Dallas a huge advantage over Seattle in net, but in round one Seattle received elite goaltending as well. Philipp Grubauer finally gave Seattle the goaltending they thought they were getting when they signed the former Avalanche goalie to a six year $35.4MM contract in 2021. The German netminder hasn’t been able to sustain much success over his two years with the Kraken, but if he can build on his impressive stretch of play in round one, Seattle will have a punchers chance to advance.

Prediction

Anytime an elite goaltender is involved in a series it is always difficult to bet against them. Jake Oettinger has proven himself to be one of the best in the world and so far, has shown an ability to rise to the occasion when the games mean the most. If he can steal a game or two in this series, it will give Dallas a sizeable advantage and could be the difference in the series.

The other element that comes into play is experience. Dallas has a ton of players who have been here before, and while Seattle has some veterans with Stanley Cup playoff experience, it isn’t on the same level. This small detail could be the difference maker for the Stars if they can draw on that experience and find that extra push.

The prediction: Dallas win in seven games.

Oliver Kylington Expected To Re-Join Flames Next Season

TSN is reporting that Calgary Flames president of hockey operations Don Maloney stated Monday that defenseman Oliver Kylington will re-join the team next season. Maloney made the announcement this afternoon at a Flames press conference and stated that he was excited to see the Swede coming back to Alberta. The former second round pick didn’t play in Calgary this season and wasn’t with the team as he was dealing with a personal matter.

Kylington was very effective for the Flames in 2021-22 as he set career highs with nine goals and 31 points in 73 games playing alongside defensive defenseman Chris Tanev on the second pairing. His breakout season led the Flames to re-sign the Stockholm native to a two year $5MM contract extension in August 2022.

With Kylington returning it could make for an interesting shuffling of the deck chairs on the Flames back end. Calgary is just $1.25MM under the 2023-24 salary cap without accounting for Kylington’s cap hit. His return will most certainly put the Flames over the salary cap and require them to move out a player or two.

Calgary might already be interested in moving out some players given the year the team just had missing the playoffs. The Flames made huge moves last summer and was expected to compete for the Stanley Cup, but instead ending up parting ways with general manager Brad Treliving and firing head coach Darryl Sutter. The Flames have no shortage of tradeable assets and could move a couple of their pending unrestricted free agents this summer should they decide to rebuild or retool their roster.

Matt Murray To Be Toronto Maple Leafs Third Goalie

David Alter of Sports Illustrated is reporting that Matt Murray is set to take the role as the Toronto Maple Leafs third goalie as they get set to begin their second round series against the Florida Panthers. The Thunder Bay native joined his Leafs teammates at practice today for the first time since he suffered a concussion on April 2 during a 5-2 Toronto loss against Detroit.

The 28-year-old will fall behind Ilya Samsonov and Joseph Woll on the Maple Leafs goaltending depth chart and will likely travel with the club when they head to Florida for games three and four. Murray has an exemplary track record in the playoffs having backstopped the Pittsburgh Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cups as a rookie in 2016 and 2017.

A lot has changed since those two championships as Murray has been relegated to an afterthought since being traded by the Penguins to the Ottawa Senators in 2020. Murray never found his footing in Ottawa as he battled inconsistency and injuries and was eventually traded last summer to Toronto in a salary dump.

Murray had an uneven first season in Toronto posting a 14-8-2 record with a 3.01 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage. While he hasn’t posted elite numbers in years, he does offer Toronto a strong backup option should Samsonov stumble.

New York Islanders Sign Hudson Fasching To Extension

The New York Islanders have signed forward Hudson Fasching to a two-year contract extension. The Islanders announced the extension that will keep the Apple Valley native in New York through the 2024-25 season. The 27-year-old appears to have finally found a home for the foreseeable future after bouncing around the past few years. Fasching is a former fourth round pick of the Los Angeles Kings and signed a two-way contract with the Islanders last summer.

Fasching set career highs in almost every offensive category this season with 10 goals and nine assists in 49 games while finishing +10. He also dressed in 18 games for Bridgeport in the AHL putting up 11 points. He had just three points in 38 NHL games coming into last season and decimated those numbers as he finally found a role in New York.

Fasching was once a highly touted prospect when he played at the University of Minnesota, and now after his career year he will get a bit of security with the first one-way contract of his career. He is set to count $775K against the salary cap according to CapFriendly and will likely continue his role in the Islanders bottom six. Although he has demonstrated an ability to slide up and down the lineup having taken some shifts with Mathew Barzal last season.

Arizona Coyotes Sign Maksymilian Szuber To ELC

The Arizona Coyotes announced today that they have signed defenseman Maksymilian Szuber to an entry level contract. The Coyotes didn’t announce the terms of the three-year contract as per club policy.

The 20-year-old German was a Coyotes sixth round pick in the 2022 NHL entry draft. He spent this past season with EHC München of the DEL where he posted three goals and 10 points in 46 games. Szuber is built for playoff hockey standing 6’3” and weighing north of 200 pounds. In fact, just this week Szuber helped EHC München to a German Premier League championship while putting up two assists in 15 games.

Szuber will likely be joined very soon by a ton of young talent. Arizona has 35 draft picks in the next three NHL drafts, and already has a stable of good prospects. Should he continue to develop at his currently pace he could have an opportunity to play hard-nosed hockey for a strong Coyotes team.

Szuber won’t produce much in the way of offence as he has produced just 17 points in 83 career games in the DEL, however given his draft position it would be a massive win for Arizona should he become an NHL regular.

Ryan Reynolds Group Preparing Huge Bid For Ottawa Senators

Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch is reporting that the Remington Group led by Ryan Reynolds and real estate tycoon Christopher Bratty are preparing a billion-dollar bid in hopes of purchasing the Ottawa Senators. The Markham based group has apparently ramped up their attempts to secure the team as well as the Canadian Tire Centre, the Senators current arena in suburban Ottawa. This past Sunday Postmedia reported that the organization hired by the Melnyk family to sell the team had set a May 15 deadline for the final bids.

Sources have said that Reynolds and Bratty would like to close this deal sooner than later, and their actions would certainly echo that. They have already met with the National Capital Commission to discuss development of a downtown arena and entertainment district, and even met with Ottawa mayor Mark Sutcliffe. The mayor had concerns about the re-development of the 75 acres of land that houses the Senators current home arena, but it is believed that The Remington Group would be prepared to find new purposes for the land in Kanata.

The NHL has been upfront about the fact that they would like to see Ryan Reynolds involved with whatever ownership group should emerge. But one would have to think that if the latest reports are true the Remington Group must be the favorite to land the club. Reynolds is Canadian and would bring international attention to a club that has had issues attracting attention within the city it plays in. The Deadpool actor also has a bit of a track record with sports ownership, having purchased Wrexham FC in February 2021, and leading the club to plenty of early success.

While Reynolds and company are the front runners, there is plenty of interest from other groups with deep pockets and experience in sports franchise ownership. One of the most notable would-be Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé, the owner of the NBA club surprised a lot of people two weeks ago when he made an unexpected visit to Canada’s capital city.

Wild Notes: Gustavsson, Sundqvist, Zuccarello

Michael Russo of The Athletic is reporting that Filip Gustavsson was the first goalie off at Minnesota Wild practice today indicating that he will likely get the start in game six tonight against the Dallas Stars. Gustavsson has been between the pipes for four of the Wild’s five playoff games and has given up just nine goals on 125 shots. Although those numbers are sparking, Gustavsson has struggled in each of his last two starts giving up three goals in each game on just 24 shots. This drop in his play coupled with the brilliant play of Dallas netminder Jake Oettinger has Minnesota on the ropes as they will face elimination in game six tonight.

There was some speculation that Minnesota could turn to veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to start game six, but Fleury has struggled in his last four starts dating back to early April. The former Vezina winner has only started one game in the series, a game two loss in which he gave up seven goals on 31 shots. Gustavsson had superior numbers to Fleury in the regular season as well and may even garner some Vezina consideration come awards season.

In other Minnesota notes:

  • Michael Russo tweeted that Oskar Sundqvist could possibly play tonight for the Wild. Sundqvist hasn’t dressed since game two of the Dallas series and has a goal in just a single game in these playoffs. The two-time Stanley Cup winner was healthy scratched for game three and hasn’t seen game action since. The 29-year-old Swede came over from the Detroit Red Wings in a trade deadline move for a fourth-round pick and looked to be a fit putting up seven points in 15 games. However, in the playoffs the Wild have opted for more toughness and have kept Ryan Reaves in the lineup over Sundqvist.
  • Russo also tweeted that Wild forward Mats Zuccarello will likely be out of the lineup, or best-case scenario he will be a game time decision. The Norway native didn’t skate yesterday with the team and is dealing with an undisclosed ailment. The Wild have been tight lipped about the situation and at this point there are more questions than answers. Zuccarello has been fantastic for the Wild this season with 67 points in 78 games during the regular season and has followed that up with two goals and three assists through five playoff games. Should he be unable to dress, the Wild will be hard pressed to replicate his production in the most important game of their season.

Injury Notes: Lomberg, Krejčí

Boston Globe reporter Matt Porter tweeted that Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice told reporters that winger Ryan Lomberg is out for the remainder of their first round series. The 28-year-old suffered an upper body injury in the Panthers 6-2 loss to the Boston Bruins in game four and hasn’t played since. Lomberg didn’t miss any of the regular season dressing in all 82 games and registering 12 goals and eight assists but has yet to score in four playoff games.

The undrafted Lomberg proved to be a good depth option this year for Florida but spent much of the first round mixing it up in what could be described as more of a pest role. Lomberg had 14 penalty minutes in the Panthers game two win in Boston and became public enemy number one after choking Trent Frederic.

In other injury notes:

Birthday boy David Krejčí appears to be a step closer to returning to the Bruins lineup. Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic tweeted that the center skated in a non-contact jersey during Bruins practice this morning. While it’s a good step for the now 37-year-old, it doesn’t appear as though he will be dressing for game 6 against Florida. Krejčí travelled with the Bruins to Florida but given his jersey color today all signs would point to him needing more time before a return can be possible. However, Porter has also tweeted out that Krejčí will take the pre-game warmups with the club, and that the Bruins are uncertain of his availability.

Krejčí has missed the last three games of the series after being a late scratch for game 3. While the Bruins have missed him centering their second line, Pavel Zacha has been fine in Krejčí’s spot recording two assists in three games.

Boston Bruins Notes: Bergeron, Krejčí

Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now is reporting that it appears as though center Patrice Bergeron will be dressing in game five for the Boston Bruins. Bergeron has been sidelined for all four of Boston’s first round games against the Florida Panthers after sustaining an injury in the regular season finale against the Montreal Canadiens.

Yesterday both head coach Jim Montgomery and general manager Don Sweeney had stated that Bergeron would likely return to practice Tuesday morning. Bergeron did in fact skate with the team today and led the stretching. After practice he said that he didn’t foresee any issues keeping him from playing in his first game of the playoffs.

Boston will have an opportunity on Wednesday to eliminate the Florida Panthers after taking both games three and four in Florida. The Bruins will return home with an opportunity to punch their ticket to a second-round matchup with either the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In other Boston Bruins notes:

  • While it appears that Bergeron will be returning, Jimmy Murphy tweeted that head coach Jim Montgomery told the media that David Krejčí will be unavailable for game five. Krejčí dressed for the first two games of the series in Boston, but then was a late scratch for game three and hasn’t dressed since. He struggled mightily in game two of the series going -3 and getting beat up in the faceoff circle. Not much is known about Krejčí’s injury and Boston has been tight lipped about it other than to offer updates on his status. NHL.com’s Eric Russo writes that Don Sweeney has said that Krejčí is slated to undergo further testing and an update could come after the team hears from the doctors.

Edmonton Oilers Have Recalled Goaltender Calvin Pickard

In a curious move the Edmonton Oilers recalled veteran goaltender Calvin Pickard from the Bakersfield Condors. The move was announced this morning by the Oilers; however, the team hasn’t commented on any reason for it. Stuart Skinner took most of the starts for Edmonton during the regular season and playoffs, however he was pulled in game four after allowing three goals on 11 shots. Jack Campbell came in to replace Skinner and performed admirably as he backstopped the Oilers to a comeback win to pull even with the Los Angeles Kings at two games each.

Pickard didn’t see any game action this season with Edmonton and has only played in 36 NHL games in the past six seasons. The former second round pick was once viewed as the goaltender of the future for the Colorado Avalanche after posting a save percentage over .920 in his first two NHL seasons. However, since those initial seasons Pickard hasn’t posted a single season with a save percentage above .900 and has bounced back and forth between the AHL and the NHL.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, is said by the Oilers about Pickard’s recall. The Oilers did practice this morning, with Oilers radio analyst Bob Stauffer observing that Stuart Skinner was in the starters net and TSN has reported that Skinner will indeed start game five. The debate amongst Edmonton fans since game four has been about who to start in net for game five after Campbell stood on his head stopping 27 of 28 shots. Campbell was expected to be the starter for the Oilers coming into this season but lost the net as he struggled with a .888 save percentage in just 36 games. Skinner jumped on the opportunity to start and posted a .913 save percentage in 50 games.
