Nashville Searching For Top-Six Forward, Hesitant At Asking Prices

February 21, 2017 at 3:24 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Nashville Predators are currently in the first wildcard spot in the Western Conference, but are by no means guaranteed a playoff position at this point. With 64 points the team can take solace in the fact that it has played only 58 games so far, fewer than most of its contemporaries. As the trade deadline approaches, what should they add to help them down the stretch run?

Well, GM David Poile joined 1025 The Game and said (via Brooks Bratten of NHL.com) ideally they’d add a top-six forward but have worries that it would cost a top-four defenseman. The team isn’t interested in that, after using Seth Jones to acquire Ryan Johansen last season. Poile did say “never say never,” but it would seem they want to stay away from dealing from their blueline this season. The GM says that much of the league is frozen right now, not sure if they should be buyers or sellers this season due to all the close races.

For the Predators, adding a top-six talent would be a huge boost to a squad that has had trouble scoring goals at times this season. While captain Mike Fisher is having an excellent season, relying on him as an offensive producer isn’t an ideal situation. As Adam Vignan of the Tennessean put it in his latest column, the team’s wingers have been “unsteady” this season. Craig Smith especially, who was coming off three straight 20-goal seasons has just nine markers in 56 games to go along with seven assists. While Victor Arvidsson has broken out, the team needs more players like him to give them some high-end skill on their top lines.

Who they could get is an issue though, as the available rentals aren’t guaranteed to perform any better than the in-house options they have. Kevin Fiala, a former 11th overall pick, scored in his first game back up with the big club and could be important down the stretch. So too could James Neal, who after a slow start has five points in his last three games and looks rejuvenated. Yes, the team still has a glut of excellent defenders at the NHL level, but Vignan notes on Twitter that they don’t have quite the pipeline that they used to.

20 Teams Interested In College Free Agent Neal Pionk

February 21, 2017 at 2:15 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The NHL is a different place in 2017. With the advancement of analytics and systems, the increased speed and skill, and almost-extinction of the “goon” it’s like a whole new sport. Now, if you’re smaller than the prototypical center, or defenseman you have a chance in the NHL. You no longer have to be a hulking beast capable of rubbing people off the puck in the corners or protecting your star player with your fists. Or at least that’s what one college player is hoping.

Neal Pionk was passed over in his draft year due to his small size—5’11”, 170-lbs on the most generous of measurements—but is turning heads with his strong play at the University of Minnesota-Duluth as a sophomore. After scoring 17 points in an up-and-down rookie season, Pionk has 24 points in 30 games and is showing that he may be able to compete at the next level after all. Craig Custance of ESPN reports that as many as 20 teams have expressed interest in the Bulldog, including the expansion Vegas Golden Knights, who can sign college free agents in March like any other team (provided their final expansion payment goes through without a hitch).

Pionk attended the Washington Capitals development camp in 2015 before heading to school. It will be interesting to see if Washington will be back in the mix to sign him when his season ends. The right-handed defenseman likely has so many suitors because not only does he possess the puck-moving skill that usually accompanies the smaller defenseman at this level, but also has a slight nasty streak that leads him to physically challenge opposing forwards as well. Some might liken his play to Connor Carrick of the Toronto Maple Leafs (and previously those same Washington Capitals), who doesn’t let his height dictate the type of game he plays.

While this year’s crop of NCAA free agents doesn’t have a huge name leading the way, players like Pionk can still be valuable assets to any team. Look for Vegas to go hard after several of them as it tries to add depth to a system that will have very little of it to start. The Minnesota native is already 21 (and will turn 22 in July), meaning he’ll have to adapt quickly to the increased difficulty of the AHL and beyond, but if that many teams are interested, he’ll likely have a fighting chance.

Montreal Canadiens Make Greg Pateryn Available In Trade

February 21, 2017 at 1:13 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

In a tweet from TSN’s Frank Seravalli, he reports that other clubs have told him Montreal Canadiens defenseman Greg Pateryn is available for trade. Apparently GM Marc Bergevin sent out a note to the league advising as much, though Pateryn remains in the lineup for the Habs tonight against the New York Rangers. As Seravalli notes, this should come as a surprise to no one. Montreal has had a logjam on the blueline since acquiring Nikita Nesterov from Tampa Bay, with Pateryn sitting out frequently.

Tonight he’ll be in the lineup instead of Nesterov perhaps for a bit of a showcase before the deadline but more likely because the Tampa Bay defender hasn’t impressed lately and played only 12 minutes on Saturday. New head coach Claude Julien will need to find some trust in one of the defenders, or risk having to learn even more on Shea Weber and company.

For teams around the league, Pateryn may look like a worthwhile addition as a six or seventh defenseman. He has some interesting underlying possession numbers, and provides a big body on the back end. While he is by no means a game-changing addition, his relatively low cost may be of some interest. He’s owed just $800K this season and next, before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Montreal Canadiens Acquire Keegan Lowe From Carolina Hurricanes

February 21, 2017 at 12:42 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

In a much smaller move than the one we saw yesterday, the Montreal Canadiens have acquired defenseman Keegan Lowe from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Philip Samuelsson. Amazingly, both players are sons of former NHL players, Kevin Lowe and Ulf Samuelsson—who is actually the head coach of the Charlotte Checkers where his son will now play.

This isn’t the biggest deal we’ll see this deadline but perhaps it is just another crack in the dam and deals will start to come through. Lowe does still have some upside after being drafted in the third round in 2011. A solid AHL defenseman, if his puck moving ability ever improved he could crack an NHL bottom pairing. It wasn’t going to happen in Carolina though, behind a young mobile defense corps.

Samuelsson was drafted in the second round in 2009 but hasn’t turned into the player Pittsburgh had hoped for. Instead, he’s bounced around a bit and is not expected to make much of an impact in the NHL ever again. He’ll be 26 in July and will now hope to make an impact under his father’s tutelage. Ulf played over 1000 games in the NHL, and was one of the most feared checkers in the league—perhaps he can show his son a thing or two about lining guys up over the middle.

Senators Injury Notes: Ryan, Stone, Hoffman

February 21, 2017 at 12:25 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After recently losing four forwards in a couple of days, the Ottawa Senators took the ice this morning ahead of their game against the New Jersey Devils and gave some clarification on the group. Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports on the injuries, including an unexpected absence from the skate.

  • Bobby Ryan has a broken finger and will be out at least a month. The original timeline was somewhere between three to six weeks when it was believed to be a broken hand. In something that has become a trend for Ryan, he’ll sit out with a broken digit instead; the winger has broken a finger four times in the past three and a half years, and twice already this season. The struggling winger hasn’t been able to repeat even his 22 goal season from a year ago (which in itself was a down season) and has forced the Senators to look for an upgrade up front as the deadline approaches.
  • Mark Stone, the victim of Jacob Trouba’s suspension-causing illegal check the other night is out with a neck injury and has no timeline for his return. Head coach Guy Boucher made it very clear that it isn’t a head injury as it first appeared. Remember that Stone suffered a concussion in training camp this season. As their best offensive forward, Stone’s absence will leave another big hole on the wing if he’s out for any length of time.
  • Mike Hoffman, who exited the same game in the second period is out with a groin injury and will not play tonight. It doesn’t seem as serious as the other two, but groin injuries do tend to linger and get re-aggravated if pushed too hard too soon. Another winger, the Sens will have some interesting line combinations tonight as they start a four-game road trip.
  • Dion Phaneuf was also missing from practice, but apparently just took the morning off for maintenance. Senators fans can breathe deeply knowing that he and Tommy Wingels will both suit up tonight for the game.

If the Senators want to capture the Atlantic Division crown, they may have to go out and add a player (or two) up front to fill in for these injuries. With Stone, Hoffman and Ryan out, they’ve lost three of their top five goal scoring threats and a ton of depth on the wing. Even a rental at this point may be worth it if the injuries linger, as they still have plenty of teams nipping at their heels for those last few playoff spots.

Brooks Laich Placed On Waivers By Maple Leafs

February 21, 2017 at 11:28 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After asking yesterday to be sent somewhere that he could pursue a Stanley Cup, the Maple Leafs have placed Brooks Laich on waivers today, according to Bob McKenzie of TSN. We wrote just yesterday about how the Leafs had some built in deadline depth in a trio of veterans stashed in the minors. Laich, Milan Michalek and Colin Greening all have extensive NHL experience and could help a team that hits injury trouble down the stretch. McKenzie adds that these are not unconditional waivers to terminate his contract. That means this is likely just a testing of the waters so to speak, to gauge interest prior to the deadline.

Laich has played 764 games in his NHL career, scoring 20+ goals three times during his run with the Washington Capitals. The 33-year old was acquired by the Maple Leafs as a salary dump along with Connor Carrick and a second round pick last season for Daniel Winnik. Though Laich spent the remainder of the 2015-16 season with the big club, he hasn’t played a game with them this season, instead buried in the AHL playing sparingly there too.

For a player who thinks he can still contribute to a team’s pursuit of the Stanley Cup, wasting away the last few years of your career in the minors mostly because of your cap hit must be extremely frustrating. Though Laich seemed happy to take on a leadership role earlier this season, that playoff itch seems to have surfaced once again. For what it’s worth, Laich does have 32 career playoff points in 65 games and one year averaged almost 22 minutes a night for the Capitals in the postseason. If playoff experience is what you’re after, he’s got it.

Snapshots: Oilers, Eberle, Kaprizov

February 21, 2017 at 11:10 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Edmonton Oilers are in a position to buy for the first time in several deadlines, but that doesn’t mean they should. Their core is still incredibly young, led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl along with a handful of defenders 25 and under. Spending prospect or draft pick capital on a high-priced rental isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but when you’re looking to build long-term success it’s not usually prudent. That’s what Peter Chiarelli thinks at least, in the latest piece from David Staples of the Edmonton Journal. Chiarelli admitted that the group that is winning for the first time in a while deserves some additions, but doesn’t think his front office will be busy on deadline day.

When Chiarelli mentions his offseason moves that are “coming around” he certainly is referring to Adam Larsson, who after a shaky start to the season is starting to turn into the minute-muncher that they’d hoped for. While plus-minus isn’t a perfect stat by any means, Larsson was a -3 through the end of 2016 and has been a +17 since. While a lot of that is dependent on linemates and situations, Larsson has by all accounts started to turn the corner into the excellent puck possession defender they had hoped for. Chiarelli doesn’t think rentals are on the table for his squad, and he might be right. A turned corner by Milan Lucic, another offseason acquisition, would give the Oilers everything they need to make a deep run in these playoffs.

  • Darren Dreger of TSN was on the radio this morning and mentioned that a while back teams were kicking the tires on Jordan Eberle, though discussions didn’t go very far. It will be interesting to see whether the Oilers shop him this summer, as they have to pay Draisaitl this summer and McDavid the year after. After moving Taylor Hall last summer, Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are likely targets this time ’round.
  • Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports that Minnesota Wild prospect Kirill Kaprizov will move to CSKA Moscow in the KHL after this season, when his contract is up. Currently playing with Salavat Yulayev, Kaprizov has 42 points in 49 games. The 19-year old winger was selected in the fifth round of the 2015 draft, and would be a big addition if the team eventually convinces him to come to North America. For now, he’ll reportedly go to one of the KHL’s best teams and look to continue his development.

Deadline Primer: Calgary Flames

February 21, 2017 at 10:10 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

With the trade deadline now just over a week away, we continue to take a closer look at each team. Where do they stand, what do they need to do, and what assets do they have to fill those needs?

The Calgary Flames kicked off their trade deadline a bit early this season, acquiring right-handed defenseman Michael Stone from the Arizona Coyotes on February 20th, before many other teams have even decided whether they’re true buyers or sellers. With Stone, Calgary is getting one of the top rental defenseman on the market, whether you believe in his underlying numbers or not. Depth on the blueline is no longer much of an issue for the Flames, who are still currently in a playoff spot.

While they likely won’t catch the leaders in the Pacific, they are right in the thick of the wildcard hunt with 62 points and a good young team. It’ll be an interesting deadline to be sure, as the team doesn’t seem like it is finished just yet.

2018: CGY 1st, CGY 2nd, CGY 4th, FLA 4th, CGY 5th, CGY 6th, CGY 7th

Trade Chips

The Flames used a couple of picks to grab Stone, and it looks like if they want to do anything else it would be more of the same. The Flames don’t have much off their roster that they would be willing to move outside of Dennis Wideman who is making too much money for too little performance for anyone to want him. The team could trade Micheal Ferland or Matt Stajan if they thought they could upgrade in the bottom-six, but it would be tough to find a deal that makes sense for either one. Sam Bennett

The most talked about name going into the deadline will be Sam Bennett, but without much cause. The team doesn’t seem like it is anywhere close to accepting the idea that they need to move on from the former 4th-overall pick, despite his down season. Bennett is only 20, and if teams gave up on their top picks that early they’d find themselves in the lottery more often than not.

In terms of prospect capital, the Flames could waive Hunter Shinkaruk or Tyler Wotherspoon around hoping for a bite, though neither would get the return that the team would jump at. There system is filled with former top prospects who are almost getting to the point where they need to be tested in the NHL, and perhaps a rebuilding squad would take a chance on one or two of them.

Five Players To Watch: G Brian Elliott, D Dennis Wideman, F Micheal Ferland, D Jyrki Jokipakka, F Kris Versteeg

Team Needs

1) Goaltending – It almost stops here (no pun intended) for the Flames after they addressed their second defense pairing with Stone. Their goaltending has simply not been good enough for a team that wants to make a splash in the playoffs. Elliott hasn’t been anything close to what the team had thought they were getting, and Chad Johnson has been admirable but average in his takeover. If the Flames could find a legitimate number 1 goaltender it would be a big help, but even a capable 1A guy that can split the rest of the season with Johnson could be helpful. If Mike Smith hadn’t been told he’s staying in Arizona it would be a perfect fit.

2) Third-Line Center – Though the team shouldn’t give up long-term on Bennett, they need to find a capable leader for their third line that isn’t him. Stajan is no longer capable of that kind of role, and the bouncing ball of wingers isn’t helping. If the Flames could find a legitimate shutdown center capable of driving that line, their forward group would get a lot more dangerous as a whole.

3) Top-Six Right Winger – If they can’t find the center, then adding a better option than Versteeg or Troy Brouwer on the top line is a must. Though both are capable of 20+ goal seasons at their best, they haven’t shown that ability this season. Replacing Versteeg with a more dangerous scoring threat would take some of the pressure off the kids up front and allow Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan to show what they can do offensively.

Mitch Marner Placed On Injured Reserve, Frederik Gauthier Recalled

February 21, 2017 at 9:18 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Maple Leafs have officially placed Mitch Marner on injured reserve retroactive to February 15th. In his place the team has recalled Frederik Gauthier from the AHL Toronto Marlies. Though moving Marner to IR sounds bad, he’ll still be available for Thursday’s game if healthy enough to go. As Kristen Shilton of TSN notes Gauthier was scratched in yesterday’s Marlies-Senators game, a curious decision before the call-up was confirmed.

The Leafs have been without their magic rookie for two games already and have felt his absence on the powerplay most of all, going 1/8 without him. Marner is one of the rare wingers that can drive an entire line, holding the puck for long stretches by himself. It had showed with 48 points in 56 games while skating alongside James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak for much of the season.

Gauthier is expected to figure into the lineup for Ben Smith, a fourth-line center that has had a lot of trouble this season between injury and inconsistency. Smith’s faceoffs, that were once considered one of his best skills, have diminished this season since the hand injury that needed surgery earlier in the year. Though Gauthier doesn’t offer much in the dot either, he’s a young former first-round pick that the Leafs want to develop into a shutdown role. He’ll get another chance tonight against the Winnipeg Jets, as Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine go head to head once again.

Minor Transactions: 02/21/17

February 21, 2017 at 8:08 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

As always, we’ll keep track of all the day’s minor transactions right here:

  • The Washington Capitals have made a dream come true today, calling up forward Travis Boyd for the first time in his professional career. Boyd has been playing for Hershey for two seasons since signing out of the University of Minnesota in 2015. A skilled forward, Boyd has 96 points in his 131 career AHL games, a big number for a former sixth-round pick. Whether he gets into the lineup right away is still to be seen, but he will definitely add some offense when he does.
  • The St. Louis Blues have sent both Ivan Barbashev and Magnus Paajarvi down to the Chicago Wolves to get into some action during their bye-week. The Blues don’t play again until Sunday, meaning that the two youngsters can keep playing during the break and come back up this weekend.
  • After acquiring Michael Stone yesterday, the Calgary Flames have cleared a roster spot by sending Garnet Hathaway to the AHL. The young winger has played 26 games in Calgary this season, scoring just five points.
  • In response to the same deal, the Arizona Coyotes have brought up Anthony Deangelo according to Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post. The young defender is the same one that was suspended three games earlier this season for abuse of an official. The former first-round pick has played 20 games for the Coyotes this season, scoring nine points. An exceptional offensive talent, DeAngelo will slot nicely into the spot Stone has left vacant.

Make sure to keep this page bookmarked, as it will be updated throughout the day.
