How Will The Expansion Draft Impact Canadian Teams?

November 24, 2016 at 8:00 pm CDT | by natebrown 8 Comments

Continuing our look at different expansion draft angles,  CBC’s Amy Cleveland examines how the draft will affect the seven teams in Canada. Laying out the rules for the draft, Cleveland looks further and prognosticates who she sees as “potentially protected” versus those players who would be “intriguing” in being exposed. She further writes that all seven Canadian teams will be able to protect the bulk of their important players. The Flames sit prettiest without any non-movement clauses in contracts while the Leafs and Senators have only one player with an NMC (Nathan Horton, and Dion Phaneuf respectively).

You didn’t list Nathan Horton as one of Toronto’s “Potentially Protected”, was that an accidental omission or is he exempt because of his injury status?

Yes, it is due to his injury. He is listed under the NMC portion because of it. Cleveland expounded on that in her article as well.

Why wouldn’t McDavid or Mathews need protection?

As first or second year pros, they’re exempt from the draft.

Oh ok, thank you. I’m more of a casual hockey fan, so I haven’t looked too closely into the draft rules yet. Baseball is more of my thing.

Any player on a rookie contract does not need to be protected in the draft. Rookie contracts are either 2 or 3 years long, depending on the age when the player signed the rookie contract. Thus, players like McDavid, Matthews & Laine don’t need to be protected

Pick up bobby Ryan,Tomas Plekanec and Marc Methot for veteran presence. Then scoop Marc dano, de la rose for some young blood and take sbisa and stajan for fillers and you got yourself decent team. Prob get flurey as your goalie. Not bad for G’knights
