Kraken Sign Nathan Villeneuve To Entry-Level Contract

The Seattle Kraken are formally bringing one of their higher-round selections from the 2024 NHL Draft to the organization. According to a team announcement, the Kraken have signed Nathan Villeneuve to a three-year entry-level contract.

Seattle selected Villeneuve with the 63rd overall pick of last summer’s draft. He had just concluded his sophomore campaign with the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves, scoring 23 goals and 27 assists in 50 games with a +10 rating.

This year has been a bit more of a mixed bag. He did improve his offensive output, scoring 34 goals and 70 points in 57 games, but he took far more penalties than at any point in his playing career. He finished the 2024-25 campaign with 120 PIMs, the third-highest of any player in the OHL.

Still, that primarily came from Villeneuve’s physicality and high pace of play. He’s an aggressive forechecker and was known as a pest by opponents during his major junior career. He’ll want to clean up many of those penalties should he have a future in the NHL, but he’s starting with an impressively high motor.

Villeneuve will likely finish the 2024-25 campaign playing on an amateur tryout agreement with the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds. The Firebirds have already clinched a position in the 2025 Calder Cup playoffs and will look to qualify for the Calder Cup Final for a third consecutive year.

Seattle Kraken Recall Victor Ostman, Ryan Winterton

The Seattle Kraken will have a few additional players on their bench for their matchup against the Utah Hockey Club tonight. Seattle announced they’ve recalled goaltender Victor Ostman from their AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, on an emergency basis. A few moments later, the Kraken also shared they’ve recalled Ryan Winterton on a standard recall.

Ostman’s recall suggests that either Joey Daccord or Philipp Grubauer won’t be available for Seattle tonight, but there haven’t been any updates regarding their availability. The Swedish netminder is likely considered the Kraken’s fourth-string goaltender and has yet to debut in the NHL.

Still, the 2024-25 campaign is his first playing in the professional ranks. He signed with Seattle as a collegiate free agent out of the University of Maine after managing a 35-38-7 record in 86 NCAA contests with a .905 SV% and 2.82 GAA. This season, he’s primarily played for the Kraken’s ECHL affiliate, the Kansas City Mavericks, posting a 21-7-4 record with a .903 SV%, 2.52 GAA, and two shutouts in 32 contests.

Meanwhile, Winterton earns his fifth call-up of the season with this transaction. Seattle selected Winterton with the 67th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft, and he debuted with the club last year. This season, the Markham, Ontario native has scored 18 goals and 37 points in 55 games for AHL Coachella Valley with a +11 rating. Unfortunately, it hasn’t gone great in the NHL with Seattle, as he’s only mustered one assist while carrying a -7 rating in nine contests.

Nyman Assigned To Coachella Valley

After a strong first stint in the NHL, the Kraken announced (Twitter link) that they’ve assigned winger Jani Nyman to AHL Coachella Valley.  The 20-year-old was recalled last month and got into a dozen games with Seattle where he put up three goals and three assists in just under 14 minutes of playing time.  Nyman is in his first full season in North America and had been doing quite well with the Firebirds prior to being recalled as he had 26 goals and 15 assists in 55 outings with them.  With the Kraken’s season ending next week, Nyman will focus up on finishing strong with a Coachella Valley squad that has already locked up a spot in the playoffs, allowing his season to continue for at least a little longer.

Kraken Sign Andrei Lashko To Three-Year Entry-Level Contract

The Seattle Kraken announced they’ve signed 2023 fourth-round draft pick Andrei Lashko to a three-year entry-level contract. The deal presumably begins next season, though there has been no present indication of if Lashko will finish the year in the AHL. The deal will carry a $950K cap hit at the NHL level. Lashko will turn pro after wrapping up his fourth season in Canada’s CHL.

Lashko – or Loshko, as it’s often spelled – made the move to the OHL this summer, after spending the last three seasons in the QMJHL. Originally a CHL Import Draft pick in 2021, Lashko was placed on waivers by the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies this year, opening the door for the Niagara IceDogs to snatch up the productive QMJHL forward. The move worked to great effect, with Lashko potting an impressive 34 goals and 70 points in 64 games this season. That mark ranked third on the IceDogs in scoring, behind hefty 2026 NHL Draft top prospect Ryan Roobroeck and Winnipeg Jets prospect Kevin He.

Lashko offered the perfect middle ground between Roobroeck’s heavy shooting and He’s nimble dekes. Sat in the middle, Lashko was a dynamic two-way forward with the leg speed to be everywhere all at once. He matched the energy of his linemates well and consistently found his way into open ice, no matter if Niagara asked him to play right-wing or center. His performance in the OHL was a strong continuation from his years in the QMJHL, where he managed 26, 70, and 67 points respectively over three seasons. Lashko seems to be missing a step that’ll turn him into a top pro – and will likely begin his career in the minors as a result. But with a six-foot-one, 185-pound frame; lightfoot skating; and a keen instinct of where to be to make an impact, it seems only a matter of time before Lashko makes his NHL debut.

Kraken Asssign Oscar Fisker Mølgaard To AHL

  • Moving to a prospect note, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, announced that prospect Oscar Fisker Mølgaard is joining the team for the remainder of the season. Mølgaard, the 52nd overall pick of the 2023 NHL Draft, recently finished a strong campaign with the SHL’s HV71, scoring five goals and 19 points in 38 contests.

Kraken Reassign Ryan Winterton

4/3: The Kraken have reassigned Winterton to the minor leagues after he started in the team’s Wednesday night win over Vancouver. He recorded 12:22 in ice time and no scoring in the shutout victory.

4/2: The Kraken announced late last night that they’d recalled right-winter Ryan Winterton from AHL Coachella Valley under emergency conditions. While it’s unclear who, it looks like they have a couple of question marks up front as they kick off a road trip that will take them up to their final two games of the season.

If he’s needed tonight against the Canucks, he’ll be making his first NHL appearance since Dec. 17. A 2021 third-round pick, Winterton has logged 17 showings for the Kraken over the past two years. The 21-year-old has only one assist to his name and a minus-eight rating. He averaged 9:49 per game and has poor possession numbers, controlling 44.5% of shot attempts and 45.9% of expected goals at even strength despite starting 55.7% of his shifts in the offensive zone.

The 6’2″ winger has looked good in the minors, though. Through two professional seasons with the Firebirds, he’s posted 39-31–70 in 111 games with a +34 rating, working out to 0.63 points per game. His offensive pace has jumped slightly this season, recording 35 points in 53 games after hitting that mark in 58 appearances in 2023-24. He ranks fifth on Coachella Valley in scoring.

Winterton is the No. 7 prospect in the Kraken’s system, per Scott Wheeler of The Athletic, likely topping out as a defensively responsible third-line winger with some scoring upside. He’s got another year left on his entry-level contract with a cap hit of $828,333 and will be a restricted free agent in 2026.

Chandler Stephenson Made A Game-Time Decision

  • Chandler Stephenson may return to the Seattle Kraken tonight after missing three games due to a lower-body injury. Earlier today, Seattle’s broadcast analyst Alison Lukan reported that Stephenson has been upgraded to a game-time decision. His return would be significant for the Kraken, as he is the team’s second-leading scorer with 11 goals and 48 points in 69 games.

Chandler Stephenson Participates In Full Contact Practice

Minnesota Wild forward Marcus Foligno returned to the lineup last night, dressing for the first time in almost two weeks (as per Michael Russo of The Athletic). The 33-year-old missed five games due to an upper-body injury but suited up against Washington and was +1 in 18:10 of play. The veteran winger is having a routine season by his standards, tallying 11 goals and 11 assists in 68 games with 66 PIM and 221 hits.

The Wild are clinging to the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference despite dealing with injuries to some of their top players. The team welcomed defenseman Jonas Brodin back earlier this week, and with Foligno now returning it looks as though Minnesota should get most players back by the beginning of the postseason.

In other Western Conference notes:

  • Colorado Avalanche forward Joel Kiviranta missed last night’s game with a lower-body injury (as per Jesse Montano of Guerilla Sports). It’s the first game that Kiviranta has missed this season as he has made 72 appearances while averaging 12:30 of ice time per game. No word yet on how long Kiviranta is expected to be out but there should be an update before the Avalanche take on St. Louis on Saturday afternoon. The 29-year-old has set a career-high this season in goals (16), assists (7) and points (23) and likely won’t have to settle for a one-year deal at league minimum this summer when he re-enters free agency.
  • Seattle Kraken forward Chandler Stephenson practiced yesterday in a full-contact jersey but did not play last night against the Edmonton Oilers (as per Kate Shefte of The Seattle Times). Stephenson suffered an upper-body injury back on March 19th in a game against Minnesota and has missed the past two games. Given that he has returned to full contact, it seems likely that the 30-year-old will return to the lineup at some point in the next week. Stephenson signed a massive seven-year contract ($6.25MM AAV) with the Kraken last July, and while the deal was a massive overpay, Stephenson has provided depth offense this season in more of a defensive role, posting 11 goals and 37 assists in 69 games.

Kraken Recall Jani Nyman

The Seattle Kraken have recalled top forward prospect Jani Nyman to the NHL. This marks the first call-up of Nyman’s young pro career. He currently leads the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds in scoring with 26 goals and 41 points in 55 games. Nyman also leads all AHL rookies in goals.

Nyman is playing through his first full year in North American pros after stopping by the AHL for a five-game trial at the end of last season. He’s taken quickly to the AHL and is currently on pace for 34 goals in 71 games this season. That total would make Nyman just the sixth U21 AHL skater to net 34 or more goals since 2000-01, and would mark the most a minor-leaguer has scored since Nigel Dawes managed 35 goals in 2005-06.

Seattle originally drafted Nyman in the second-round of the 2022 NHL Draft, after trading defenseman Jeremy Lauzon to the Nashville Predators to acquire the pick. Nyman followed his draft selection with a return to the Liiga’s Ilves. He managed 10 goals and 14 points in 29 games of what was his first year in Finland’s top level. With his feet under him, Nyman was able to lap those totals last year – netting 26 goals and 43 points in 48 games before moving to North America.

It’s not often that players score more goals than they do assists, and Nyman is one of the rare cases of a player making it habitual. He’s a stocky and controlled forward with a stellar shot and strong drive towards the low-slot. Those attributes helped Nyman earn an AHL All-Star Game bid in his rookie season, and could now help him step into his NHL debut. Kraken general manager Ron Francis hinted at wanting to give Nyman NHL reps before the season ended during a post-deadline media availability – and now seems to be following through with the proper roster moves. That could pose the challenge of a lineup shakeup for head coach Dan Bylsma, but the upside of adding a goal-scorer of Nyman’s level would be hard to ignore for a Kraken lineup currently well outside of the playoff race.

Kraken Recall John Hayden, Reassign Jacob Melanson, Ben Meyers

  • After a flurry of trade activity over the last couple of days, the Seattle Kraken are making a small roster move for the benefit of their AHL roster. The Kraken announced they’ve reassigned forwards Jacob Melanson and Ben Meyers to their AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, and have recalled John Hayden in a corresponding transaction. The former debuted in the NHL last night, notching four hits and one takeaway in 9:53 of ice time.
  • In addition to recalling Emil Andrae, the Philadelphia Flyers are also making two more player recalls to their NHL roster. The team announced they’ve recalled forwards Olle Lycksell and Rodrigo Abols to the NHL roster for Saturday’s game against the Seattle Kraken. Abols has scored one goal and one assist in nine games for the Flyers this season, while Lycksell has gone scoreless in six contests.
