Kraken Reassign Jani Nyman
The Kraken announced they’ve reassigned left winger Jani Nyman to AHL Coachella Valley. With no immediate need for a roster spot, it looks to be a performance-based demotion for the 21-year-old. Matt Murray and Jaden Schwartz are due for IR returns at some point soon, though, so they won’t need to open a roster spot for one of them when it happens.
Nyman, 21, has had a relatively quick ascension since being selected in the second round of the 2022 draft. While the 6’4″, 220-lb winger may look like a power forward on paper, he’s not all that physical. It’s his goal-scoring ability that led to his pickup, recording over a point per game in Finland’s second pro division in his draft year.
After two successful campaigns in Finland’s top flight post-draft, Nyman arrived in North America for the 2024-25 campaign. He led Coachella Valley with 28 goals in 58 games, earning a late-season call-up to Seattle. He didn’t look out of place at all with the Kraken, putting up three goals and six points in 12 games down the stretch.
That led to Nyman capturing an opening night job with Seattle in the fall as he entered year two of his three-year entry-level deal. However, ice time has been harder to come by compared to last year’s recall, averaging 10:42 per game with a spattering of different linemates, although he’s seen most of his time with Shane Wright down the middle. The production hasn’t been there as a result, limited to four goals and six points through 24 games.
Nyman had also been a healthy scratch for the last three games, not a great use of development time for a player who still profiles as a potential long-term top-nine piece. Instead of 10 minutes per game in the NHL, he’ll now be ticketed for closer to 20 in the minors.
Pacific Notes: Nyman, Toffoli, George
After a strong first stint in the NHL, the Kraken announced (Twitter link) that they’ve assigned winger Jani Nyman to AHL Coachella Valley. The 20-year-old was recalled last month and got into a dozen games with Seattle where he put up three goals and three assists in just under 14 minutes of playing time. Nyman is in his first full season in North America and had been doing quite well with the Firebirds prior to being recalled as he had 26 goals and 15 assists in 55 outings with them. With the Kraken’s season ending next week, Nyman will focus up on finishing strong with a Coachella Valley squad that has already locked up a spot in the playoffs, allowing his season to continue for at least a little longer.
Elsewhere in the Pacific:
- Sharks winger Tyler Toffoli won’t play tonight against Calgary due to a lower-body injury, relays Max Miller of The Hockey News (Twitter link). He’s listed as out day-to-day. Toffoli has had a strong first year in San Jose, tallying 28 goals and 22 assists, good for third on the team in points while leading the way in goals. He’s expected to accompany the club on their upcoming four-game road trip so unlike his teammate Shakir Mukhamadullin whose season is over, Toffoli should be back before the campaign comes to an end next week.
- The Kings’ AHL affiliate in Ontario announced that Los Angeles has reassigned goaltender Carter George to the Reign. The 18-year-old was the third goalie taken at the draft last June, going late in the second round at 57th overall. The 18-year-old played in 47 games with OHL Owen Sound this season, posting a 3.35 GAA and a .909 SV% before the Attack got eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs. George won’t be eligible to play full-time for Ontario next season so this will just be an opportunity for him to keep skating for a bit longer and perhaps get into his first taste of professional competition.
Kraken Recall Jani Nyman
The Seattle Kraken have recalled top forward prospect Jani Nyman to the NHL. This marks the first call-up of Nyman’s young pro career. He currently leads the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds in scoring with 26 goals and 41 points in 55 games. Nyman also leads all AHL rookies in goals.
Nyman is playing through his first full year in North American pros after stopping by the AHL for a five-game trial at the end of last season. He’s taken quickly to the AHL and is currently on pace for 34 goals in 71 games this season. That total would make Nyman just the sixth U21 AHL skater to net 34 or more goals since 2000-01, and would mark the most a minor-leaguer has scored since Nigel Dawes managed 35 goals in 2005-06.
Seattle originally drafted Nyman in the second-round of the 2022 NHL Draft, after trading defenseman Jeremy Lauzon to the Nashville Predators to acquire the pick. Nyman followed his draft selection with a return to the Liiga’s Ilves. He managed 10 goals and 14 points in 29 games of what was his first year in Finland’s top level. With his feet under him, Nyman was able to lap those totals last year – netting 26 goals and 43 points in 48 games before moving to North America.
It’s not often that players score more goals than they do assists, and Nyman is one of the rare cases of a player making it habitual. He’s a stocky and controlled forward with a stellar shot and strong drive towards the low-slot. Those attributes helped Nyman earn an AHL All-Star Game bid in his rookie season, and could now help him step into his NHL debut. Kraken general manager Ron Francis hinted at wanting to give Nyman NHL reps before the season ended during a post-deadline media availability – and now seems to be following through with the proper roster moves. That could pose the challenge of a lineup shakeup for head coach Dan Bylsma, but the upside of adding a goal-scorer of Nyman’s level would be hard to ignore for a Kraken lineup currently well outside of the playoff race.
Kraken Reassign Jani Nyman To Minors
The Kraken have recalled right-wing prospect Jani Nyman from his loan to Ilves of the Liiga, per an official announcement. Nyman will finish the 2023-24 season on assignment to AHL Coachella Valley.
The 19-year-old Nyman was drafted by Seattle in the second round of the 2022 draft, 49th overall. Kraken GM Ron Francis signed Nyman to a three-year, entry-level contract last June before loaning him back to Ilves in July. As an entry-level slide candidate, his deal will now be active from 2024-25 to 2026-27 because he did not play at least 10 NHL games this season.
When Nyman debuts for Coachella Valley, it will mark his first game away from Ilves on a permanent basis. The Valkeakoski, Finland native has played his entire junior and professional career in the Ilves organization to date. His first professional experience came in his draft year, spending most of the season on loan to Koovee of the second-tier Mestis. There, he erupted for 18 goals and 35 points in 34 games, leading the league in power-play goals with six and capturing Rookie of the Year honors. He also made his Liiga debut that season, recording one assist in 10 games for Ilves.
Despite having the size for it at 6’4″ and 207 lbs, Nyman isn’t an overly physical player and is best described as a sniper rather than a power forward or grinder. That, plus some noticeable defensive deficiencies in his game, never gave him first-round billing in 2022, despite his strong production in a professional league.
The Kraken should still be extremely satisfied with how he’s developed. Thrust into a top-six role on his loan to Ilves this season, he responded in kind with 26 goals and 43 points in 48 games, leading all U-20 players in scoring. He also served as an alternate captain for Finland at the World Juniors, finishing with two goals and six points in seven games. His season ended late last month after Ilves, which finished second in the league with a 33-13-7-3 record, was upset by seventh-place KalPa in five games in the quarterfinals.
Nyman is likely a couple of years away from challenging for an NHL job. However, he’s proven enough overseas that he’ll likely spend next season with Coachella Valley and put himself in consideration for short-term recalls. He hits pause on his Liiga career for now after recording 36 goals, 58 points and a +19 rating in 87 games for Ilves since debuting at the top level in 2021-22.
Kraken Re-Assign Jani Nyman To Finland
The Seattle Kraken re-assigned forward prospect Jani Nyman to Ilves in the Finnish Liiga today, according to a team announcement. The move solidifies Nyman’s home for next season and returns him to the organization where he’s spent the past six seasons developing.
Seattle selected the 18-year-old right winger with the 49th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. After a strong rookie season in the Liiga, registering ten goals in 29 games for Ilves, Seattle signed the bulky sniper to a three-year, entry-level contract in June. He also appeared for the Finnish national junior team at the 2023 IIHF World Juniors, notching two goals and an assist for three points in five games.
While 2022-23 was his rookie season in Finland’s top men’s league, it wasn’t his first full professional season. Nyman spent his draft year on loan with KOOVEE in the Mestis, the country’s second-tier league behind the Liiga. While not a standard league for draft-eligible prospects to suit up in, Nyman excelled there, leading the team (by far) with 18 goals and 35 points in 34 games.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and 217 pounds, he possesses a pro-ready frame despite being more than a year away from his 20th birthday. He does bring an intriguing blend of shooting ability and size, and while he’s far from a sure thing at the NHL level, he is one of the Kraken’s more intriguing forward prospects.
Nyman now looks to build on his skills in a familiar environment before likely coming stateside in 2024. Given his age, he’s an entry-level slide candidate, meaning his ELC will toll to 2024-25 unless he plays ten or more NHL games in the coming season, an unlikely event given today’s news.

The Kraken have signed one of their draft picks from 2022 as CapFriendly reports (Twitter link) that they’ve signed forward Jani Nyman to a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal will carry an AAV of $950K and breaks down as follows:
2023-24: $775K salary, $95K signing bonus, $80K games played performance bonus
2024-25: $855K salary, $95K signing bonus
2025-26: $855K salary, $95K signing bonus
The 18-year-old was a second-round pick last year (49th overall) following a strong season in Finland’s second-tier Mestis league. This season, Nyman moved up to the SM-liiga, the top division in Finland, on a full-time basis and didn’t look out of place playing for Ilves, scoring 10 goals in 29 games while averaging over 12 minutes a night. He also suited up for the Finns at the World Juniors, picking up two goals and an assist in three games.
Nyman still has one year left on his deal with Ilves and it seems likely that Seattle will opt to let him stay and play at home for next season. If that happens, his contract will slide, meaning it will still have three years left on it heading into the 2024-25 season.
