Latest On Kyle Turris Contract Talks

October 25, 2017 at 9:47 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Ottawa Senators are off to an interesting start this season, with only one regulation loss through nine games. That stretch has come with just four wins however, as the team has been defeated four additional times in overtime or the shootout. That trend isn’t likely to continue, and the Senators seem poised to take another run at the playoffs and perhaps even another Eastern Conference final. If they want to get there, they’ll likely need their top center to be in top form.

Kyle TurrisThe question is then, who will be that top center? Kyle Turris is currently occupying that role, but is in the final year of his current contract. Last we heard the Senators had offered him a five-year, $30MM contract, but hadn’t been able to come to an agreement. Now, in Pierre Lebrun’s latest column for The Athletic, the venerable insider digs into where the two sides currently sit. Turris’ camp is apparently fixated on an eight-year deal, something the team is unwilling to offer at this point. LeBrun does write that both sides seem amiable towards an eventual contract, but then asks the question of what to do should a deal not be reached by the trade deadline.

Turris would certainly fetch an impressive package on the block, as there are usually several teams looking for help down the middle. Last year, on a similarly expiring contract, Martin Hanzal (along with the currently unsigned Ryan White and a fourth-round pick) netted the Arizona Coyotes a first, second and conditional round draft pick—the latter became a fourth-round pick after the Wild were eliminated early from the playoffs. Certainly Turris, whose offensive game far outpaces Hanzal’s could secure even more.

If they did move him though, the team hardly has an internal option for replacement. Derick Brassard and Jean-Gabriel Pageau are perfectly suited to their current roles, and would be hard-pressed to take on the extra responsibility involved with moving up a slot. Logan Brown, though impressing in his short stint is still just 19 and would need to burn both a year of his entry-level deal (10 games) and crawl a year closer to free agency (40 games) if he’s around at the deadline. For a team looking to compete this season, weakening yourself down the middle is hardly an option.

Senators Have Made Kyle Turris A Five-Year Extension Offer

October 18, 2017 at 6:56 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Senators have made what’s believed to be a five-year offer worth $30MM to pending unrestricted free agent center Kyle Turris, reports TSN’s Darren Dreger on TSN 1040 (audio link).  However, as has been reported earlier, Turris is more concerned about the term of the deal over the money and is still focused on securing a longer-term extension.  Dreger adds that there hasn’t been any recent substantive discussion between Ottawa GM Pierre Dorion and Turris’ agent Kurt Overhardt.

Turris is off to a strong start this season with two goals and five assists through the first six games while hovering around the 20-minute mark in average ice time.  While it’s doubtful that he’ll be able to sustain that level of production over a full season – he has only hit the 60-point mark once – he should be able to come in around the 50-point mark at the very least if he stays healthy which will set him up nicely if he does make it to the open market.

While it’s understandable that the Sens would like to avoid a max-term (eight-year) extension if possible, Turris will only be 29 at the start of next season and should still have several strong seasons ahead of him; the risk isn’t as high as it would be for someone in their early 30s.  So even though the offer represents a sizable raise from the $4MM salary ($3.5MM cap hit) he’s getting this season, there isn’t a lot of risk in waiting to see if the team ups their offer (or increases the term) as it’s fairly safe to expect that Turris will receive comparable offers in free agency next July.

“No Panic” In Kyle Turris Extension Talks

October 11, 2017 at 12:20 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Recently the Ottawa Senators were thrust into the rumor mill when Darren Dreger of TSN speculated on a possible trade. The fire was only stoked when Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet spoke about a potential gap in terms of contract length for the new deal, but now Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia spoke directly to Senators GM Pierre Dorion on the matter.

Kyle Turris“No panic” is the quote Garrioch shared, reporting that Dorion believes something can get done between the two sides. Turris is clearly an important part to the Senators and is averaging 21 minutes a night through the first three games of the season. He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but could reach a long-term deal to center the Senators’ top line for some time.

An interesting factor in the Senators’ decision may be the long-term health of Clarke MacArthur. The forward’s contract is fully insured, meaning that if he can’t return to the NHL after his latest bout with post-concussion symptoms, not only will the team get potential cap relief but also likely remove a financial burden. That $4.75MM in salary per season would go a long way in helping an internal budget team like Ottawa afford to keep Turris around.

They also have to worry about new contracts for Mark Stone and Cody Ceci this summer, when the pair reaches restricted free agency, and the pending massive deal Erik Karlsson will be signing for the 2019-20 season. Still, watching a 28-year old top line center walk in free agency is almost unheard of, making this a case of extension or trade by the end of the season.

Snapshots: Turris, Senators, Schmaltz, Cole

October 8, 2017 at 8:40 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

During his weekly Saturday Headlines segment (video link), Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman provided an update on the Kyle Turris contract situation in Ottawa on the heels of a report earlier in the week that suggested a trade could be a possibility.  Friedman reports that Turris and the Senators are very close in terms of the dollar value per season on an extension (believed to be somewhere around $6MM per season) but they are not particularly close on the term of a new deal.  He suggested that at one point in the preseason, there were teams that thought a trade might happen but now that the regular season is underway, Ottawa isn’t particularly anxious to deal him for the time being.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • Still with the Senators, they are considering recalling a pair of defensemen from their AHL affiliate in Belleville, reports TSN’s Brent Wallace (Twitter link). On top of missing Erik Karlsson who has yet to play this year, they remain without Johnny Oduya who suffered a lower-body injury in the opener while his replacement, Ben Harpur, is dealing with an upper-body issue sustained against Detroit on Saturday.  Ottawa is set to head out for a three-game Western road trip this week.
  • After suffering an upper-body injury in Saturday’s win over the Blue Jackets, Blackhawks winger Nick Schmaltz will miss at least the next two games as the team announced (via Twitter) that he will not join the team on their two-game Canadian road trip. The sophomore is off to a strong start this season with two goals and an assist through Chicago’s first two games of the season.
  • Penguins defenseman Ian Cole is out indefinitely after taking a Roman Josi shot to the mouth in last night’s game versus Nashville, notes Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Cole lost several teeth on the play as well as suffering a jaw injury.  While he’s out, Chad Ruhwedel will likely draw into the lineup after being a healthy scratch for the first three games of the season.

Atlantic Notes: Athanasiou, Turris, Pickard

October 7, 2017 at 8:50 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 5 Comments

Although the Red Wings aren’t shopping unsigned winger Andreas Athanasiou, they are listening to trade offers for him, reports Craig Custance of The Athletic (subscription required).  However, they have set a high asking price for the 23-year-old as Custance notes that Detroit is seeking a top-four defenseman or a young center in return.

Athanasiou and the Red Wings continue to be far apart in contract talks in both one-year and two-year offers.  With no resolution on the horizon, the winger has now flown to Switzerland to begin skating with HC Lugano of the NLA and while there is no contract in place to play yet, his presence over there will only fuel the trade speculation even further.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic Division:

  • With the report earlier in the week that the Senators and center Kyle Turris aren’t close on a contract extension and that a trade could be a possibility, Postmedia’s Don Brennan speculates that the report may have stemmed from a rival general manager as neither the team nor Turris benefits from this coming out this early. Turris is no stranger to a contract squabble having had a holdout with the Coyotes in the past but considering it’s only October, it’s far too early to call this situation another one.  However, it’s likely that he will be looking for a long-term deal given the demand for centers out there so if Ottawa wants to keep him around, they may have to go more years than they’d prefer to.
  • After acquiring goaltender Calvin Pickard on Friday, Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston suggests that he’s not a candidate to stay as a third-string goaltender with the Maple Leafs for too long which could have Curtis McElhinney’s roster spot in jeopardy. Pickard is nine years younger and has a decent NHL track record despite playing on a subpar Colorado team so while McElhinney has a two-year contract in tow, that might not be enough to keep him on the roster and off the waiver wire once Pickard gets some games in at the AHL level.

Could Senators Trade Kyle Turris?

October 5, 2017 at 7:06 pm CDT | by Ben Levine 2 1 Comment

We heard recently that the Senators and center Kyle Turris were making “healthy progress” on a contract extension. However, one pundit believes these talks will ultimately lead to a trade. TSN’s Darren Dreger said earlier tonight that he could envision the organization parting ways with the impending free agent.

“I think it’s headed to trade,” he said (via TSN.ca). “Trade seems likely. I’m not suggesting it’s imminent, it’s going to happen this week, next month. But before the February 26th trade deadline? Yes, and the simple reason is there has been a fair bit of dialogue between Senators management and the agent who represents Kyle Turris, dating back to early July or late June. Kyle Turris wants to commit long-term to the Ottawa Senators. We’re talking about a seven, eight-year term. So far, the Sens haven’t been willing to do that. So they cannot allow an important piece like Kyle Turris to walk out as an unrestricted free agent.”

For what it’s worth, NHL Network’s E.J. Hradek agreed with the sentiment (via Twitter), noting that “decision time” is coming in Ottawa. Meanwhile, TSN’s Bob McKenzie said he’d be surprised if the team ultimately signed Turris to a new deal.

After having recently inked starting goalie Craig Anderson to a new contract, the Senators had reportedly shifted their focus to Turris. The former third-overall pick is entering the final season of his contract, and he’ll earn an affordable $4MM in 2017. However, reports last week indicated that the 28-year-old was seeking a considerable pay raise at around $6MM annually over seven or eight years. As our own Zach Leach noted earlier this week, he’ll be competing with a number of notable free agent forwards for a hefty contract, and it might be best for both sides to work out an extension. However, if an agreement can’t be made, it makes plenty of sense for the Senators to get some compensation for a player they could lose in free agency.

Turris didn’t live up to expectations during his stint in Phoenix, but he’s turned into a dependable scorer for the Senators. The alternate captain and top line center has collected at least 55 points in three of the past four seasons, including a 27-goal, 28-assist campaign in 2017.

Turris, Senators Making “Healthy” Progress On Contract Extension

October 1, 2017 at 10:58 am CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

With the start to the 2017-18 season just days away, the Ottawa Senators are looking to take care of their biggest 2018 off-season concern before the puck drops on the new campaign. According to Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch, Senators GM Pierre Dorion is making slow but steady progress in negotiations with impending free agent center Kyle Turris. With starting goalie Craig Anderson recently re-upped, the focus is now on getting Turris, a centerpiece of the Sens’ offense, re-signed, preferably in the coming days.

A career that got off to a rough start with the Phoenix Coyotes, Turris has since blossomed into the player that he was expected to be when drafted third overall in 2007, following a trade to the Senators in 2011. Now an alternate captain for Ottawa and the top line center most nights, Turris has become one of the top players in the nation’s capital. Turris has 55+ points in three of the past four seasons and leads all Senators forwards in points over the past five years.

Come next summer (or sooner), Turris is going to be rewarded for this success. He has one season remaining at a team-friendly $4MM, but Garrioch reports that his side is seeking a long-term deal worth at least 50% more. Will Turris get seven or eight years at $6MM from the Senators? Garrioch states that the sides were far apart on those numbers in talks this summer, but have slowly been making progress. If Ottawa doesn’t give him that deal, it is likely that someone will on the open market. However, Turris been a free agent in this summer’s stagnant market, it would have been a near certainty, but in 2018 Turris will face competition from John Tavares, Paul Stastny, Rick Nash, Evander Kane, James Neal, James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak, Mikael Backlund, and Cam Atkinson among other forwards commanding free agent dollars. The best – and safest – fit for both sides appears to be an extension. Watch for a deal to get done sooner rather than later.

Winnipeg Might Have Contract Issues With Trouba Again

August 13, 2017 at 9:14 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 4 Comments

Less than a year ago, the Winnipeg Jets dealt with dragout negotiations with restricted free agent Jacob Trouba. The young blueliner and his agent Kurt Overhardt attempted to force the Jets’ hand, requesting a trade and holding out. The team finally managed to get the former ninth-overall pick in 2012 to agree to a two-year bridge deal worth $6MM. Once signed, Trouba withdrew his trade request and everything seemed fine. The 23-year-old had career highs in assists and points, finishing the season with eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points, but he played in 21 fewer games than the year before.

With one year remaining on his deal signed a year ago, however, no extension was agreed to yet this offseason and James O’Brien of NBC Sports writes that the team could have similar problems with Trouba coming up in the future. With that restricted status preventing him from getting the contract that he really wanted and forcing him to sign a team-friendly deal, the scribe writes that Trouba and his agent may force the Jets’ hands this time around with either a high-paying extension or forcing a trade elsewhere.

Many short-bridge, team-friendly deals (especially messy contract disputes) have later forced teams to pay up big-time. Although Trouba will remain an RFA in a year, O’Brien compares these negotiations to that of other players who were later traded, including P.K. Subban (formerly of Montreal), Ryan O’Reilly (formerly of Colorado), Ryan Johansen (formerly of Columbus) and Kyle Turris (formerly of Arizona). Several of those players were Overhardt clients, who is known to be aggressive.

Could that mean that Trouba could find himself on the trade wire at the trade deadline this year? O’Brien suggests that while he may not be a top defenseman yet, he could command more than Seth Jones money ($5.4MM AAV) on his next contract and the young defenseman has another year to prove his worth on the ice. Either Winnipeg will have to pay up or move him to a team that will.

Senators Passed Up Chance To Unload Ryan

August 8, 2017 at 6:53 pm CDT | by Seth Lawrence 2 Comments

One of the few players who was heavily anticipated to become a Vegas Golden Knight did not – Bobby Ryan. Despite an above-average playoff performance in the Senators’ heartbreaking Conference Final run, Ryan has vastly under-performed relative to his contract. Instead of coordinating a deal to unload that contract to Vegas, they instead lost Marc Methot, perhaps the second best defenseman on the team in that Cinderella story. Methot’s contract was not perfect, to be sure, but Ryan’s deal still looms large over the team for years.

It should be noted that Ryan has been a consistent 50+ point producer prior to this season, where he tallied only 25 through 62 contests. He’s been on pace for over 50 every year since he was a rookie. That said, his fall from grace in 2016-17was concerning and dramatic. His puck control seriously declined, his decision making faltered, and his production took a nosedive. With only 12 goals, and coming off a hot post-season, the time was ripe for GM Pierre Dorion to take advantage of Vegas’ unique situation and rid himself of a bad contract. Earning $7.25 MM AAV for the next five seasons, Ryan is the 36th highest paid forward in the league, and second-highest on the payroll behind Erik Karlsson.

For those who believe such an arrangement could not have been worked out, merely look at some of the contracts Vegas did take on. The essentially retired David Clarkson’s $5.25 MM for the next 3 seasons was shipped out at the price of a first and a 2020 second. The perennially concussed Mikhail Grabovski was dealt for a similar package, which also protected some of the Islanders’ players. Vegas also didn’t shy away from taking veteran players with value – they selected James Neal (29 years old) from Nashville as well as David Perron from the Blues (29 years old). Certainly, with a little encouragement, George McPhee might have entertained the possibility of Ryan as a Knight. The price may have been steep, but Karlsson is in the prime of his career, while many players are looking for raises in the immediate future. Clearing Ryan’s albatross off the books may have gone a long way towards building toward a consistent contender.

Ultimately, Dorion decided against unloading a bloated contract in hopes that Ryan’s post-season revival was no mirage. With the UFA crop available, it’s difficult to blame the management for doubling down on the struggling winger. Five roster players will be UFA after this season, including Craig Anderson and Kyle Turris, while Mark Stone (RFA) has earned a raise. Karlsson will then be due a raise for 2019-20, as will five other forwards. The team will need to rely upon cost-effective ELC players and bargain contracts to continue holding pace with the rest of the Atlantic division. Only time will tell whether the Ryan decision was the correct one.

Offseason Keys: Ottawa Senators

June 29, 2017 at 12:20 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While expansion was the early headline in what will be a busy NHL offseason, there are still several other storylines for each team in the months to come. Here is a closer look at what lies ahead for the Ottawa Senators.

The Senators made a big impression in their first season with head coach Guy Boucher and GM Pierre Dorion at the helm.  Although they didn’t win the Atlantic, they took care of business in the first two rounds before falling to the Cup-champion Penguins in the Eastern Final.  With a lot of players in need of new deals, Dorion will have a lot to accomplish this offseason.  Here are some of the key highlights.

Decide Phaneuf’s Future

While it was understandable that defenseman Dion Phaneuf was believed to be on the block prior to the Expansion Draft, it’s a bit more intriguing that his name has still been out there.  Defenders are in high demand and with it being a shallow free agent market, there are teams still showing interest.

The catch here, of course, is Phaneuf’s contract which isn’t exactly a bargain.  He has four years remaining with a $7MM cap hit and the expectation is that the Sens would have to either retain some salary or take a sizable contract or two in return.  Regardless of what the interest level in the 32 year old is, Ottawa’s willingness (or lack thereof) to retain or match money will go a long way towards determining whether a trade gets done.  Phaneuf also carries some say as he has a 12-team no-trade list.

While Ottawa has some youngsters that are close to making it, it would still be a bit surprising to see the team lose both Phaneuf as well as Marc Methot in the same offseason.  Accordingly, it’s realistic to expect that if they do decide to deal the veteran blueliner (and as things stand, the thought is he’s more likely to stay though that could change depending how the UFA market plays now), they’re going to be looking for a left shot defender in any potential trade return.

Extension Talks For Turris

Oct 28, 2016; Calgary, Alberta, CAN; Ottawa Senators center Kyle Turris (7) skates during the warmup period against Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome. Mandatory Credit: Sergei Belski-USA TODAY SportsCenter Kyle Turris has been one of the better bargains league-wide in recent years.  He has been Ottawa’s top pivot while only carrying a cap charge of $3.5MM.  Unfortunately for the Senators, that bargain will soon be coming to an end as he will be eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer and will be eligible to sign an extension as of July 1st.

Having hit the 55 point plateau in three of the last four seasons, Turris is going to be in line for a substantial raise.  As a team that typically spends well below the cap ceiling, finding room within their budget will become the biggest question here.

Dorion has done well to build up some depth down the middle with Derick Brassard, Zack Smith, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau but there’s no doubt that if Turris were to depart in 2018, that group would be a weakened unit.  This one may not be on the top of the bucket list at this stage of the summer but it’s something that the Sens will likely want to address sooner rather than later.

New Deal For Pageau

After re-signing Mike Condon earlier today, Pageau is the most notable of their remaining free agents, restricted or unrestricted.  While he didn’t produce as much during the season as he did in 2015-16 (33 points compared to 43 the year before), he still filled an important middle six role while being well above average at the faceoff dot, checking in at 54.8%.

And then there was his postseason run where Pageau scored eight times in just 19 games, further bolstering his reputation as a player with a knack of scoring some key, timely goals.  That playoff performance makes his RFA case a lot more intriguing and he does have arbitration eligibility as well.

Pageau sits two years away from unrestricted free agency status and is coming off his bridge deal now, one that carries a qualifying offer of $1.1MM.  He should easily surpass that on this contract regardless of whether it’s a long-term or a short-term one.  Smith inked a four year, $13MM extension midseason and while those were all UFA years, that should be in the range of a new deal for Pageau.
