Adam Clendening Placed On Waivers

November 2, 2017 at 11:21 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The only player on waivers today is Adam Clendening of the Arizona Coyotes, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. Freddie Hamilton and David Booth, who were placed on the wire yesterday, have both cleared. Booth and Hamilton will stay with their respective teams for the time being, but can now be sent to the minor leagues for the next 30 days without having to pass through waivers again.

Clendening, 25, wasn’t extended a qualifying offer from the New York Rangers this summer and instead signed a one-year deal with the Coyotes. The contract is one-way, meaning Clendening will earn his $650K even if he clears and is sent to the minor leagues. Though he was once a second-round pick and emerging prospect for the Chicago Blackhawks, Clendening has bounced around the league in recent years unable to secure a full-time role. Playing 31 games for the Rangers last year he recorded 11 points, but wasn’t in their future plans.

The Coyotes recalled Dakota Mermis yesterday, but it’s unclear if he’ll figure into their immediate plans or if he’s just another paper transaction to help them stay cap compliant. Mermis was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2015, but has yet to make his NHL debut. Since Niklas Hjalmarsson is nursing an upper-body injury, the team did need an insurance policy on defense. If Clendening is ticketed for the minor leagues, Mermis becomes that policy.

One thing to remember is that team’s sometimes waive players to increase their trade value around the league. Should Clendening clear, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him shipped off to a team looking for some depth on defense. As a short-term option he can be used on the NHL roster, and if he clears waivers he’ll be able to be stored at the AHL level in case of emergency. Claiming is also an option, but he’d then need to stay on the NHL roster.

Freddie Hamilton, David Booth On Waivers

November 1, 2017 at 11:07 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Ryan Stanton of the Edmonton Oilers has cleared waivers, but two more names are on the wire today. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports that both Calgary forward Freddie Hamilton and Detroit forward David Booth are on waivers.

Hamilton’s status is likely because of the continued presence of Mark Jankowski, who is still waiting for his first NHL point but has looked the part of an NHL forward. Selected in the first-round of the 2012 draft, it’s been a long road for Jankowski but the patience looks like it’s paying off. The Flames are also expected to activate Jaromir Jagr from injured reserve this week, meaning someone had to go up front.

Booth has basically been a non-factor for the Red Wings, playing just four games and 20 total minutes of ice time. After attending camp on a professional tryout, he signed a one-year two-way deal with the Red Wings. While his experience may cause someone to put in a claim, it’s unlikely that Booth has much left to give in the NHL. A former 30-goal man, he hasn’t been a reliable scoring threat since 2012.

It must be noted that once again Vadim Shipachyov has not been waived by the Golden Knights in order to mutually terminate his contract as many expected. Though it still seems overwhelmingly likely that Shipachyov returns to Russia, as long as the papers are not filed there is always a chance something is worked out.

Detroit Red Wings To Start Season With Just 22 Players

October 2, 2017 at 2:13 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Detroit Red Wings have been right up against, or projected over the salary cap all offseason. Since bringing in Trevor Daley and Luke Witkowski in free agency, the team has admitted they would likely have to make a move to become cap compliant on day one of the season. Injuries could have solved that for them, but now according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press the team plans on carrying just 20 skaters and two goaltenders into the start of the regular season. That’s leaving one empty roster spot in order to become cap compliant.

Detroit currently projects to be $3.72MM over the cap according to CapFriendly, but will be placing Johan Franzen and his $3.95MM cap hit on long-term injured reserve. That will allow them to get under the limit, but still doesn’t give them much room to work with, especially if a deal is made with Andreas Athanasiou at some point. The Red Wings don’t project to have much success this year already, and now it seems like they’re starting behind the eight ball to begin the year.

With Tyler Bertuzzi and Evgeny Svechnikov both on injured reserve as well after sustaining injuries in camp, it looks like newly signed David Booth will be in the lineup to start the year despite being placed on waivers this afternoon. After adding his $700K, the team doesn’t have any room to bring up another roster player. While none of this affects the way the Red Wings will ice a lineup each night, it’s a hard way to start the year. Chasing the cap all season puts them at a disadvantage in trade negotiations, while also making it difficult to bring back Athanasiou even if an agreement is reached. The team still could need to make a trade to help them out in the coming days.

The Red Wings start their season Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild.

Detroit Red Wings Sign David Booth To One-Year Deal

October 2, 2017 at 8:44 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Detroit Red Wings have decided that David Booth has done enough to deserve a deal, as they have signed him to a one-year contract for the 2017-18 season. Booth had been in Red Wings’ camp on a professional tryout, but will now be on a two-way deal worth $700K at the NHL level. It will mark a return to the NHL for the 32-year old Booth after two years playing in the KHL.

A local kid who played minor hockey in Detroit before attending Michigan State University for four years, Booth will now play in front of his hometown for the first time in his NHL career. In 502 previous contests with the Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs, the speedy forward recorded 231 points. Over the past two years he has played 59 games in the KHL (including playoffs), scoring just 26 points.

While there is no guarantee that Booth spends the entire season in the NHL, he has made enough of an impression to warrant a return to North American professional hockey. A former 30-goal scorer, there is a chance that could be another trade deadline asset for the Red Wings if he can show he is still able to contribute. Otherwise, he’ll serve as much needed depth for a club that has question marks surrounding several players, including Andreas Athanasiou who remains unsigned.

Poll: Which PTO Has The Best Chance Of Making An NHL Roster?

September 5, 2017 at 12:58 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

Teams all over the league are starting to hand out professional tryouts, with Jyrki Jokipakka being the latest with the Washington Capitals. Every year we see some veteran players looking for one last chance, and AHL tweeners trying to claw their way into the NHL. Many of the names that have been given PTOs already won’t play in the NHL this season, and some of them may not play professional hockey at all.

Still, there are almost always a few that earn themselves an NHL contract either with the team whose camp they’re attending, or somewhere else around the league. Kris Versteeg parlayed a PTO with the Edmonton Oilers into a contract with the Calgary Flames last year, and was important enough that he warranted an extension this summer.

17 tryouts have officially been handed out up to this point, with some interesting names among them. Players like David Booth and Ryan Malone have had a lot of success at the NHL level but have been away for several years, while others like Chris Lee are trying to prove that they’ve been overlooked for some time. Who do you think is the most likely to earn a contract at the end of training camp?  You can select as many players as you want from the list of names, and leave a comment if you think they’ll sign somewhere else around the league.

David Booth Expected To Sign PTO With Detroit Red Wings

August 29, 2017 at 4:43 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

In a day filled with professional tryout signings, Craig Custance of The Athletic reports that another one is close at hand. David Booth is expected to sign a PTO with the Detroit Red Wings, marking a possible return after two years in the KHL.

Booth last played in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2014-15, scoring 13 points in 59 games. That was a far cry from his career-high of 31 goals and 60 points, marks he registered in a dream 2008-09 season with the Florida Panthers. Two other seasons he recorded 40+ points, but those years seem like ages ago for the 32-year old. Last year he scored just ten points in 31 games for Omsk including their playoff run, and he’ll have to show that he’s both healthy and contributing in order to get a contract from the Red Wings.

Custance also notes that Danis Zaripov, the suspended KHL winger looking for work in the NHL has been connected to the Red Wings, and that his vacancy from Ak Bars may have caused them to reach out and offer Andreas Athanasiou a contract. Zaripov was cleared to sign with an NHL team yesterday, but finds himself looking for a guarantee after teams have already built their rosters.
