Andrej Sekera Out 6-9 Months With Torn ACL

May 16, 2017 at 11:23 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

In a huge turn of events for the Edmonton Oilers, the team announced that Andrej Sekera will undergo knee surgery to repair a torn ACL and is looking at a 6-9 month recovery. The defenseman injured the knee against Anaheim, presumably when he left game 5 in the first period.

While the Oilers had several defensemen take solid steps forward in their development, the team still relied heavily on Sekera this season in all situations. The 30-year old defender played over 21 minutes a night and skated on both the powerplay and penalty kill. Sekera is also the team’s highest-paid defender, and has four years left on a deal that pays him $5.5MM per season.

Six months would put Sekera coming back in mid-November, but nine would take the majority of the season away from the defenseman. The Oilers will need to rely even more on Oscar Klefbom and need another step forward for Darnell Nurse and perhaps even Griffin Reinhart. It will also be interesting to see if this increases the chance that Kris Russell is back with the team, after recently stating his hope to stay in Edmonton next season.

Russell had to settle for just a one-year deal last summer after teams pulled away from his weak analytical numbers. After another season where he posted modest point totals, huge blocked shot numbers and bad possession statistics, Russell will likely be in a similar situation with a limited market. Edmonton may have just become his biggest suitor, as they’ll have minutes to go around at least to start the year.

Klefbom Out For Oilers

May 7, 2017 at 5:59 pm CDT | by Seth Lawrence Leave a Comment

In a potentially devastating blow to their defense, Edmonton’s Oscar Klefbom will not participate in Game 6 in what is a must-win against Anaheim. He left warmups prior to puck-drop and did not return. Fellow defenseman Andrej Sekera was already ruled out earlier in the day. The defenseman has taken heavy assignments on the top pairing with Adam Larsson. Klefbom’s aggressive defending helps clear the slot and move the puck up ice. The swede’s offensive game had truly blossomed this year – he posted 12 goals and 26 assists during the regular season to lead the team from the blueline. Klefbom has been a workhorse for the young Oilers, and his loss will definitely alter matchups for coach Todd McLellan. For tonight however, McLellan has the benefit of last change at home.

Without Klefbom, Mark Fayne was initially slotted to take third pairing duties. Instead, Griffin Reinhart found his way back to the take the ice, after a late season call up. The once promising prospect has had his fair share of struggles in Alberta. His entry was a surprise to most, but Fayne’s rust likely became a factor. Fayne had not played an NHL contest since December and did not overly impress for the AHL Bakersfield Condors. Reinhart certainly has more upside, but also the potential to commit more egregious defensive errors. Edmonton will need to rely even more heavily upon Larsson, as well as ask Kris Russell and Darnell Nurse to substantially up their minutes and quality of play.

Eric Gryba will replace the injured Sekera and play alongside Reinhart.

Oilers Lose Sekera For Rest Of Series Against Ducks

May 7, 2017 at 11:24 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The Edmonton Oilers not only lost a heartbreaker Friday night when the Anaheim Ducks came back from a three-goal deficit with 3:16 seconds remaining to tie the game and later win it in overtime and take Game 5 and a 3-2 lead. Now the team lost veteran defenseman Andrej Sekera for the rest of the series, according to head coach Todd McLellan.

The 30-year-old defenseman is a key piece to the Oilers’ defense as he is third on the team in blocked shots. The team now must win two straight games without him in order to advance to the next round of the playoffs. He left Game 5 during the first period after being hit in the boards. His absence was definitely a factor in Game 5.

The veteran scored eight goals and 27 assists this past year for 35 points, his second-best output in his career. Veteran Eric Gryba will move into the lineup to fill in the gap for the Oilers. The 29-year-old played in 40 games this season and had six points.

Injury Updates: Murray, Steen, Bozak, Sekera

May 6, 2017 at 9:37 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While Marc-Andre Fleury is off to a strong start this postseason, the Penguins could soon have a decision to make between the pipes as starter Matt Murray skated for over an hour on Friday and appears to be getting closer to being able to return to the lineup, notes Alex Iniguez of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  The 22 year old suffered a lower body injury in the warmup of Pittsburgh’s postseason opener and hasn’t played since.

It’s the exact opposite situation compared to last season where Fleury was hurt when the playoffs started and Murray took over the starting role.  Presumably, even if Murray is able to return, it’s hard to imagine that they’d look away from Fleury who has a strong .935 save percentage this postseason.

Other injury notes from around the league:

  • St. Louis left winger Alex Steen missed his first game of the playoffs on Friday night with a lower body injury. Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Steen has been in a walking boot since being injured in their postseason opener against the Wild and that he was on crutches on Friday, hardly a good sign for his potential availability in another elimination game on Sunday afternoon.
  • Toronto center Tyler Bozak was playing with a lingering back issue down the stretch and into the playoffs, reports Sportsnet’s Luke Fox. Bozak noted that it caused him to miss several practices and game day skates although he was able to stay in the lineup for the most part, skating in 78 regular season games as well as all six playoff contests.
  • Edmonton blueliner Andrej Sekera left Friday’s game against Anaheim with what’s believed to be a lower body injury sustained on a hit from Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf. Ryan Frankson of the Oilers’ team website notes that there was no update on his condition following the game nor is there a timetable for his return.  With Sekera going down in the first period, fellow Adam Larsson had to pick up a big chunk of the slack, logging just shy of 45 minutes in their 4-3 double overtime defeat.

Injury Notes: Marner, Pouliot, Senators

February 24, 2017 at 2:24 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Mitch Marner is likely out again on Saturday night, but it doesn’t seem like that’s what his coach wants. Yesterday before Marner sat out against the New York Rangers, Mike Babcock told Kristen Shilton of TSN that it’s not up to him at this point.

Mitch and I had that little discussion today. We wondered how the science project was going…and we didn’t get any good answers.

I’ve said it before – that’s why coaches and players aren’t allowed to make those decisions.

Shilton again today reported that Marner had a vigorous on-ice workout on his own before Leafs practice, but didn’t skate with the team. Babcock would love to know when he gets his dynamic winger back, and so would Leafs fans. The team could have used him last night in a shootout loss against the Rangers, and it has now been nine days since he suffered his “day-to-day” upper-body injury.

  • Bob Stauffer of 630 CHED reports that the Edmonton Oilers got some good—or bad, depending on who you ask—news today on the injury front, as Benoit Pouliot rejoined the team in Washington. Andrej Sekera also was at practice though Adam Larsson, who missed Wednesday’s game with a lower-body injury, was still absent.
  • Columbus has lost winger Matt Calvert on a week-to-week basis, according to the team. Calvery suffered an oblique injury just before their bye-week, but will be out on a longer term than expected. This is the reason for the Markus Hannikainen emergency recall this morning.
  • Terry Frei of the Denver Post tells us that both Erik Johnson and Rene Bourque will be back in the lineup tomorrow, a good sign for a team heading into the trade deadline. Bourque could warrant a look from teams looking for depth up front if he can prove he’s healthy enough to contribute.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen is the bearer of bad news for Senators fans, as he reports that both Mike Hoffman and Mark Stone likely won’t play tomorrow night against the Carolina Hurricanes. Stone has a chance, but head coach Guy Boucher “wouldn’t bet on it”. If the pair remains out for any length of time, the Senators may be forced to make a move at the deadline, if they weren’t already planning one.

Western Conference Snapshots: Russell, Davidson, Coyotes, Stars

February 9, 2017 at 11:40 am CDT | by Glen Miller 1 Comment

Like many teams, the Edmonton Oilers will face some difficult choices when choosing whom to protect in the expansion draft. The recent emergence of Brandon Davidson and the team’s reported desire to re-sign Kris Russell beyond the current campaign has created a surprising logjam on the blue line. Assuming the team elects to protect seven forwards and three defensemen, it’s a near certainty that the Oil will keep Adam Larsson, Oscar Klefbom and Andrej Sekera, which means the team will have to expose Davidson. But David Staples of the Edmonton Journal offers up a solution for Edmonton: protect four defenders, including Davidson, and make Jordan Eberle available to Vegas to select.

While acknowledging that Russell has been a solid, if unspectacular addition to the team’s defense corps and probably would be worth a modest extension, Staples argues that Davidson, four years the former’s junior, is a better long-term option due to his cost and similar on-ice performance. As a pending free agent, Russell won’t have to be protected from the expansion draft unless he inks an extension prior, but Davidson will or the club risks losing him for nothing. One way to make the numbers work would be to leave Eberle unprotected. Eberle, who has two more years on a deal with a $6MM annual cap charge, has underachieved this season, registering just 11 goals in 55 games. If Vegas took a chance on the gifted offensive winger, it would solve two problems for Edmonton: one, it allows the team to keep Davidson and two, the team would save a sizable chunk of cap space which can then be allocated to long-term extensions for Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who will reach restriced free agency following the 2017-18 and 2016-17 seasons, respectively.

Elsewhere in the Western Conference:

  • The Arizona Coyotes are one of only a small handful of teams known to consider themselves sellers ahead of the trade deadline and they have several marketable assets that will draw interest in the coming weeks. Sarah McLellan of AZ Central lists the players she believes could be moved at the deadline. Martin Hanzal headlines the list as she notes his size and two-way acumen would appeal to practically any playoff contender. Right-shot defender Michael Stone, in the final year of his contract, could be an attractive piece since most teams are looking for blue line depth, particularly on the right side, at this time of year. McLellan includes Shane Doan but writes that it may be next to impossible to find the right fit; a serious Stanley Cup contender in need of a player of his ilk. Perhaps the most interesting name to make the cut was that of Anthony Duclair. The 21-year-old winger was considered a foundation building block coming into the season but with just nine points in 41 games earning him a demotion to the minors, it’s clear he has fallen out of favor in the desert.
  • Mike Heika recently fielded questions from readers in a mailbag feature on SportsDayDFW.com and offered insight into a wide array of Stars-related topics. The biggest concern readers seem to share is the club’s struggles in the goal-prevention department. Heika points out that goaltending is a huge problem, with the team’s netminders registering a Save % of 0.904 compared to the Washington Capitals league-leading rate of 0.928. The Stars have committed more than $10MM of cap space to Antti Niemi and Kari Lehtonen, a figure more than any other team has allocated toward their top two goalies. If the Stars want to salvage their season they may need to strongly consider an upgrade between the pipes and as we learned yesterday, the team has apparently shown interest in Marc-Andre Fleury already. While the Penguins are likely going to deal Fleury before the upcoming expansion draft, it’s unclear how much they would get in return.

Edmonton Oilers Recall Jordan Oesterle, Assign Mark Fayne To AHL

December 30, 2016 at 5:39 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-1 last night to improve their record to 4-1 in their last five games, the team has recalled Jordan Oesterle from the AHL Bakersfield Condors. In addition, the team has activated Mark Fayne from injured reserve and assigned him to the minor league team.

According to Mark Spector of Sportsnet, the team is claiming that Andrej Sekera is sick and may not be available for Saturday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks. Sekera took a shot off his foot in his final shift on December 23rd and apparently hasn’t been seen around the team since – including missing the Kings game last night.

If Sekera is out for any length of time the Oilers defense will take a big hit, as the veteran blueliner has been logging close to 22 minutes a night for the club. He was also anointed as the team’s No. 1 defender just a few days ago by head coach Todd McLellan.

Oesterle hasn’t played with the NHL club this year but has gotten into 23 games over the past two years. An undrafted free agent out of Western Michigan University, the 24-year old has turned into an excellent puck moving defenseman in the minors. With eight points in fourteen games this season, he’s continued his strong play and deserves another chance in the NHL.

Fayne on the other hand has fought injury all season, playing in just four games thus far. Gone are the days of him logging big minutes for this team now that they’ve improved the right side immensely. He’ll head down to Bakersfield to try to get back into game shape and be ready for the next injury. A veteran of almost 400 career games and owner of a $3.625MM cap hit this season (and next), it’s surely not the last we’ve seen of him in the NHL.

Pacific Notes: Sekera, Kings, Stoner, Vatanen, Montour

December 28, 2016 at 3:52 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

After an up-and-down first season in Edmonton, Oilers defenseman Andrej Sekera has played a significant role in their turnaround this year, suggests Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal.  Signed to a six year, $33MM contract in the summer of 2015, he was asked to carry too much of the load last season but with the additions of Adam Larsson and Kris Russell this past offseason, their ‘by-committee’ approach to the back end is working a lot better.  While Sekera isn’t a prototypical number one defender, head coach Todd McLellan doesn’t hesitate to call him Edmonton’s best:

“He’s our No. 1. He’s playing his game in our system and when players do that they don’t over-extend themselves. He’s healthy and a year in and he understands what the organization is about. He has more experience with our team, not just experience in the league. He knows language and situations better. He’s playing to his strengths in our structure.”

On top of the extra familiarity with this being his second season with the team, Sekera’s offensive game has taken a step forward as of late.  He has 12 points in his last 13 games and is more than halfway towards besting his 2015-16 point total (30).

While most top teams have a franchise blueliner, the Oilers are trying to buck the trend and succeed with a group that’s greater than the sum of its parts.  With Edmonton sitting second in the division coming out of the holiday break, it’s safe to say that their blueline strategy is working so far.

More from the Pacific:

  • In an effort to try to spark their offense, the Kings are reuniting a veteran trio that played a key role in their Stanley Cup victory back in 2014, notes Helene Elliott of the LA Times. Head coach Darryl Sutter has put Marian Gaborik alongside Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown in what could be called a line of underachievers.  The trio has combined for just eight goals so far this season over 73 games, not the type of production Los Angeles was expecting from three players that cost over $20MM on the salary cap, accounting for more than half their total spending on forwards as their roster currently stands.
  • Anaheim defenseman Clayton Stoner underwent surgery on December 21st and will miss four to six weeks, Ducks coach Randy Carlyle told reporters, including Elliott Teaford of the Southern California News Group (Twitter link). Curtis Zupke of the LA Times adds via Twitter that the procedure was performed around the abdominal area.  Stoner has been out of the lineup since mid-November and has played in just 14 games this season, recording three points (1-2-3) while adding 35 hits.  The 31 year old cleared waivers (in large part due to his $3.25MM cap hit) back in early October but remained with the big club.
  • The Ducks announced that they have recalled defenseman Brandon Montour from their AHL affiliate in San Diego. He has been added because fellow blueliner Sami Vatanen has the flu and did not travel with the team to Calgary today.  Montour has 21 points in 25 minor league games this season and leads the AHL in shots on goal with 113.
