Pittsburgh Penguins Activate John Ludvig From LTIR

November 22, 2023 at 4:26 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

Taking on the Metropolitan Division-leading New York Rangers tonight, the Pittsburgh Penguins are in dire need of defensive depth and will receive that as the team announced John Ludvig has officially been activated off of the LTIR. It is unknown at this point whether or not the Penguins will dress six or seven defensemen tonight, but Ludvig will be in the lineup regardless.

Over the last several days, the Penguins have seen injuries to defensemen Chad Ruhwedel and Pierre-Olivier Joseph, while also losing out on forward Rickard Rakell for the foreseeable future. To address the lack of defensemen, Pittsburgh signed Dmitri Samorukov last night and put him on the active roster this morning.

Somewhat clamoring to add more bodies to the roster last night, the Penguins also recalled forwards Alexander Nylander and Jansen Harkins from their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Being one of the principal points of the offseason, the new President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, Kyle Dubas, made a point to add more depth throughout the entirety of the Penguins organization, specifically for situations such as this.

For Ludvig in particular, he was acquired via waivers only three days before Pittsburgh’s first game, coming over from the Florida Panthers organization. Ludvig was originally drafted 69th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, and experienced the best AHL season of his career last for the Charlotte Checkers, scoring three goals and 14 assists in 54 games played.

There is not a high expectation for Ludvig to become a main factor of the Penguins blue line, but at 23 years old, he has plenty of potential to become an important part of the team moving forward. Injured in the only game he played this season, Ludvig managed just under five and a half minutes of ice time, holding a -1 rating.

Penguins Notes: Rust, Nieto, Samorukov

November 22, 2023 at 11:17 am CDT | by Josh Cybulski Leave a Comment

Post-Gazette Sports reporter Matt Vensel tweeted some updates this morning from Pittsburgh Penguins practice. Vensel said that Penguins forward Bryan Rust was not in attendance as he awaits results from an MRI yesterday. Rust suffered a lower-body injury recently and it is unclear what the injury is or how long he could be sidelined for. Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters that Rust will not play tonight and is out day-to-day.

The Penguins have already lost fellow right-wing option Rickard Rakell and if Rust is ruled out long-term it will create a massive void in the Penguins top-6 as well as their penalty kill. Rust has been the Penguins’ most consistent winger this year with 16 points in 17 games on top of his inspired penalty killing.

If Rust is absent long-term the Penguins could find themselves in a big hole as they are in the middle of a tough stretch of games and take on the New York Rangers tonight.

In other Penguins notes:

  • Vensel also reported that Penguins forward Matt Nieto was in attendance at practice today which is typically a good sign for a player’s availability on a game day. This was confirmed by Sullivan who said that Nieto is available to play but will be a game-time decision. Nieto took a maintenance day yesterday and did not skate with the team. The 31-year-old has struggled to start the season with just a goal and an assist in his first 17 games of the season. He has been a piece of the Penguins fourth line that has provided the team with almost no offence this season but has been a very effective penalty killer when called upon. It’s fair to wonder if Nieto is dealing with a nagging issue as he has been unable to come close to replicating his play from last season when he had 12 goals and 12 assists in 81 games.
  • Vensel tweeted that freshly signed defenseman Dmitri Samorukov attended Penguins practice today and has been added to their active roster. The 24-year-old signed a one-year two-way contract yesterday that will pay him $775K at the NHL level for the 2023-24 season. Vensel followed up his original tweet by adding that Samorukov stayed after the Penguins practice for some extra work with the coaches which is generally an indication that he will not play tonight. Samorukov does have three games of NHL experience and has yet to score a point.

Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Dmitri Samorukov

November 21, 2023 at 3:17 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

Adding some defensive depth into the organization, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced they have signed defenseman Dmitri Samorukov to a one-year, $775K contract for the 2023-24 season. Bouncing between the Kontinental Hockey League and the American Hockey League over the last several seasons, Samorukov has played in three NHL games the last two seasons, adding zero points.

Samorukov was originally drafted 84th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2017 NHL Draft, waiting until the 2019-20 season to join the team’s AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. After a two-goal, eight-assist performance for Bakersfield over 47 games, Samorukov left North America to join CKSA Moskva of the KHL for the 2020-21 season.

After a somewhat disappointing performance in the KHL, Samorukov came back to North America for the 2021-22 season, once again joining the Condors. In 51 games played at the AHL level, Samorukov played much better, chipping in three goals and 15 assists, earning an emergency recall in late December of that year, playing in one game for Edmonton.

In October of the 2022-23 NHL season, Samorukov was traded to the St.Louis Blues in exchange for forward Klim Kostin, immediately reporting to the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL. Throughout his one season with the Blues organization, Samorukov was called up twice last season, making two appearances at the NHL level.

Joining the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on a minor league contract this summer, Samorukov has played in 15 games, scoring one goal and four assists, which puts him third amongst defensemen in scoring for the team. Now, with this new contract, Pittsburgh will have the option to bring Samorukov to the NHL level if depth is needed on the blue line.

Penguins Place Rickard Rakell, Chad Ruhwedel On IR

November 21, 2023 at 1:16 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

1:16 p.m.: Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review relays that Rakell and Ruhwedel have been placed on injured reserve.

12:43 p.m.: Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan issued multiple injury updates Tuesday morning, the most pressing being that forward Rickard Rakell is out “longer-term” with an upper-body injury. Sullivan also relayed that defenseman Chad Ruhwedel is sidelined week-to-week with a lower-body injury. At the same time, winger Bryan Rust missed practice today to be evaluated for a lower-body injury.

It’s unclear when Rakell sustained the injury, but if his performance is any indication, he’s been playing through it for a while. The Swedish winger has struggled mightily this season, posting just four assists through 17 games despite playing top-six minutes, frequently alongside Evgeni Malkin on the team’s second line. Rakell has been somewhat inconsistent throughout his 668-game NHL career, but a dry spell like this is quite rare for him – especially after hitting the 60-point mark last season for the second time in his career.

The Penguins acquired Rakell from the Ducks in a March 2022 trade, giving up a rather significant haul of depth forwards Dominik Simon and Zach Aston-Reese, high-end goalie prospect Calle Clang, and a 2022 second-round pick that the Ducks used on defenseman Tristan Luneau, who managed to crack Anaheim’s roster out of camp just one season post-draft. After impressing with 13 points in 19 games down the stretch for the Penguins in 2021-22, then-GM Ron Hextall inked him to a six-year, $30MM deal with a $5MM cap hit. Rakell’s production as a Penguin has largely been worth the contract – 32 goals, 45 assists and 77 points in 118 games – but the team hopes his recent dry spell isn’t a sign of things to come for the life of the deal.

It is worth noting that despite Rakell’s lack of goal-scoring, his possession numbers have been strong. His -2 rating is a testament to his lack of offense, not defense – his 56.6% Corsi share at even strength is third among Penguins forwards behind Sidney Crosby and Radim Zohorna.

Ruhwedel has been a member of the Penguins organization since signing during free agency in 2016, and he’s remained a valuable depth option at the bottom of their defensive lineup. A nagging injury to Pierre-Olivier Joseph has meant extended playing time for Ruhwedel this season, and he’s been a healthy scratch just twice throughout their 17-game schedule. The 33-year-old is in the final season of a two-year, $1.6MM deal and has one assist and a -3 rating.

His absence leaves the Penguins with only five healthy defensemen on the active roster and will necessitate a roster move, which will likely be activating defenseman John Ludvig off LTIR. The early-season waiver claim sustained a concussion in his first NHL appearance against the Stars on October 24 but has been on a conditioning loan to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton since last Thursday, making two appearances and recording a shot on goal. Multiple reports indicate Ludvig was on the ice for practice Tuesday morning and will likely return to the Penguins’ lineup Wednesday against the Rangers.

Sullivan did not issue any timeline on Rust’s injury, which likely occurred during game action against the Golden Knights on Sunday. He did not leave the game, however. The 31-year-old has seen top-line duties alongside Crosby and Jake Guentzel this season and is amidst a rebound year, posting nine goals and 16 points through 17 contests after scoring 46 points in 81 games last season.

Missing both Rakell and Rust will create a domino effect throughout the Penguins’ forward lineup, an unfortunate blow for a team that’s 6-4-0 in their last ten games after a lagging start to the season. Sullivan told reporters today, including Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, that Jansen Harkins, Vinnie Hinostroza and Alexander Nylander will be in discussions to ride shotgun with Crosby and Malkin in Rakell’s and Rust’s absences. Only Hinostroza, who is day-to-day himself with a lower-body injury, is currently on the active roster. Harkins and Nylander are currently on assignment to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and the team would need to place Rakell and/or Rust on LTIR to accommodate a recall.

Penguins Activate Alex Nedeljkovic, Send Down Magnus Hellberg

November 19, 2023 at 3:14 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 5 Comments

After spending nearly a month on the team’s long-term injured reserve, the Pittsburgh Penguins announce they have activated goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic, and have sent down Magnus Hellberg to their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Earlier in the year, Nedeljkovic played in two games for the Penguins, earning a .914 SV% and a 3.01 GAA before a lower-body injury would sideline him for the foreseeable future. While Nedeljkovic, Hellberg assumed the role of backup goaltender in Pittsburgh, sporting a 1-0-0 record in three games played, producing a .922 SV% and a 2.50 GAA.

As an older rookie in the 2020-21 regular season, Nedeljkovic finished third in Calder Trophy voting after managing a 15-5-3 record with the Carolina Hurricanes, leading the league in both SV% and GAA in 23 games started.

In an attempt to solidify their goaltending for the upcoming season, the Detroit Red Wings acquired Nedeljkovic from the Hurricanes for the signing rights to goaltender Jonathan Bernier, and a third-round draft selection in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Unfortunately for both, he and the team, Nedeljkovic’s tenure in Detroit did not play out as well as the team would have hoped, as he carried a 25-31-11 record in 74 games played, with a .900 SV% and a 3.35 GAA over his two years with the organization.

On January 16th of the 2022-23 regular season, the Red Wings chose to place Nedeljkovic on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the AHL, indicating that his time with the Original Six franchise may be nearing its end. Nevertheless, the team would non-tender Nedeljkovic, allowing him to sign in Pittsburgh to a one-year, $1.5MM contract for this season.

East Notes: Hughes, Meier, Harvey-Pinard, Carter

November 18, 2023 at 8:39 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

Devils superstar center Jack Hughes has officially returned to the lineup tonight against the Rangers after missing five games with an injury to his right shoulder. It’s about right on schedule for the 22-year-old, who sustained the injury on November 3 against the Blues and was subsequently listed as week-to-week. Already with a goal and assist in tonight’s contest at the time of writing, Hughes now resumes his quest for the Art Ross and Hart Trophies – both honors he was in strong contention for when he exited the lineup earlier this month. Despite the absence, Hughes’ 20 points in ten games entering tonight still tie for 15th in the league, and he’s only seven back of the league lead, a deficit he made significant headway in closing tonight despite skating on a rather odd line with Erik Haula and Curtis Lazar. Hughes is in the second season of an eight-year, $64MM extension signed with the Devils in November 2021 that already looks like quite the bargain.

Elsewhere in the Eastern Conference tonight:

  • Staying in New Jersey, the injury designation surrounding winger Timo Meier isn’t as positive as Hughes’. He remains sidelined with a lower-body injury and is not in tonight’s contest, missing his second straight game with the injury after serving as a scratch Thursday night against the Penguins. Head coach Lindy Ruff had no update on Meier’s status when asked by reporters pre-game, and he remains sidelined on a day-to-day basis. He was off to a decent start on the scoresheet with 11 points in 14 contests but carries a team-low -12 rating.
  • Canadiens winger Rafaël Harvey-Pinard is also absent from action tonight, sitting out his second straight game with a lower-body injury against the Bruins. Harvey-Pinard sustained a lower-body injury earlier in the month in a November 2 contest against the Coyotes but missed only three games before returning to action just over a week later. After a three-game stint back in the lineup, however, Harvey-Pinard was not able to participate in the team’s loss to the Golden Knights on Thursday. The 24-year-old has cooled down from his strong point output last season, notching only four assists through 13 contests.
  • Penguins veteran center Jeff Carter is sidelined for tonight’s contest against the Hurricanes and has now missed two games with a lower-body injury. He’s actually not played since logging 7:28 on November 9 against the Kings and was a healthy scratch for their following game against Buffalo, but sustained an injury outside of game action in the interim. The 38-year-old has failed to record a point in ten appearances this season.

Penguins Reassign Jansen Harkins

November 18, 2023 at 6:05 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

6:05 p.m.: In what may be an NHL record, the Penguins have returned Harkins to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton less than two hours after recalling him. It’s unclear why they opted to bring him up to the NHL in the first place, but this may be part of the moves Pittsburgh needs to make to take Nedeljkovic off LTIR.

4:19 p.m.: The Penguins announced the recall of winger Jansen Harkins from the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday afternoon. In a corresponding transaction, defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph was moved to IR as he remains out with a lower-body injury.

Head coach Mike Sullivan informed reporters earlier today that Joseph has been dealing with a nagging injury, explaining his absence from the lineup in ten out of the team’s last 11 contests. Joseph last played in the team’s 10-2 drubbing of the Sharks on November 4, logging an assist and a +1 rating in 18 minutes of ice time.

Meanwhile, Harkins finds himself back on the NHL roster after clearing waivers almost one month ago. It was Harkins’ second time on the waiver wire this season, the first of which resulted in the Penguins claiming him and the second season of his $850K one-way contract from the Jets. Harkins played in four games for the Penguins, registering a -1 rating and four shots on goal in less than ten minutes of average ice time before ending up on waivers a second time.

After clearing, Harkins headed to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he’s continued his long history of solid minor-league production with four goals and nine points in 11 games. It’s a tad lower than the precedent he set for himself over his last two outings with the Jets’ affiliate in Manitoba, where he averaged over a point per game.

Now, Harkins gets another shot to prove himself as a potential contributor to the Penguins’ bottom six. He’ll look to work his way into the lineup and potentially provide more scoring punch than Noel Acciari or Matthew Nieto, both of whom have just one point this season despite playing in all 15 games.

The moves leave Pittsburgh with very limited space in their LTIR pool – just $15K, to be precise. They’ll likely need to send two players to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in order to activate netminder Alex Nedeljkovic and his $1.5MM cap hit off LTIR, which should happen soon after he was recalled from a conditioning stint to the AHL Penguins today.

Joseph Dealing With Lower-Body Injury, Nedeljkovic Recalled From Conditioning Stint

November 18, 2023 at 3:55 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

  • Still with the Penguins, Mark Divver of the New England Hockey Journal reports (Twitter link) that Alex Nedeljkovic has been recalled from his LTIR conditioning stint. The 27-year-old is working his way back from a lower-body injury and stopped 17 of 19 shots in a victory on Friday night.  Nedeljkovic also scored an empty-netter in that game, making him the first goalie in AHL history to have scored two career goals.

Penguins Loan John Ludvig And Alex Nedeljkovic To AHL

November 16, 2023 at 7:37 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski 1 Comment

The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that they’ve loaned defenseman John Ludvig and goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic to their AHL affiliate the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The loan is for a conditioning stint so both players can get back up to game speed before they rejoin the NHL Penguins. Matt Vensel of Post-Gazette Sports is reporting that both players will be eligible to join the team on Sunday to play NHL games.

Ludvig and Nedeljkovic are both currently on long-term injured reserve and have already joined the Penguins in full practices before their AHL assignment. The Ludvig news is not surprising given that Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan has stated before that Ludvig would have a conditioning assignment, but Nedeljkovic was a bit of a surprise. The Penguins may have opted to allow him more time given that third-string goaltender Magnus Hellberg has filled in admirably for Nedeljkovic. Hellberg has a .922 save percentage in three appearances with a 1-0-0 record.

Ludvig suffered a concussion in his NHL debut on October 24th against the Dallas Stars and hasn’t dressed in a game since. The 23-year-old was a waiver claim before the start of the season and is one of the few Penguins defensemen who offer a bit of sandpaper. The Penguins currently have seven defensemen on their NHL roster and have used Ludvig’s LTIR to call up Vinnie Hinostroza who has been very good on the team’s rejuvenated fourth line.

The Penguins’ third defensive pairing has been a revolving door all season with Ryan Shea and Chad Ruhwedel currently occupying the final pair. Pierre-Olivier Joseph started the year on the left side, but hasn’t been able to hold down a spot and has struggled when he has been re-inserted into the lineup. The Penguins also have Ty Smith in the minors as well as Will Butcher who is injured. Ludvig will give the Penguins further roster options but could also complicate their current roster construction when he is recalled.

Nedeljkovic On Track To Return Sunday, Ludvig To Be Sent On Conditioning Loan Soon

November 15, 2023 at 9:00 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

  • Penguins goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic is on track to return on Sunday, notes Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That is the first day that he’s eligible to be activated.  The 27-year-old skated for the first time today since suffering a lower-body injury three weeks ago.  Nedeljkovic is in his first season with Pittsburgh and has played twice for his new team so far.  Magnus Hellberg is likely to be sent back to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton once Nedeljkovic is cleared to return.
  • Also from Vensel’s column, defenseman John Ludvig is expected to be sent to the minors on a conditioning stint soon. The 23-year-old suffered a concussion less than six minutes into his NHL debut and has been on LTIR since then.  An LTIR conditioning loan is generally for a maximum of three games although it can be extended to five with league approval.  Ludvig would remain on LTIR for the duration of that assignment; the Penguins would need to open up enough cap space to activate him when he’s cleared to return.
