Minor Free Agent Signings: Metropolitan Division

With over 180 deals signed during the first day of free agency yesterday, some smaller names may have gotten lost in the shuffle. Here’s a list of names that have inked two-way deals with Metropolitan Division clubs since the market opened yesterday, per CapFriendly. Some of these may have been included in our main coverage yesterday, while others went under the radar. All contracts carry the league-minimum $775K cap hit unless stated otherwise). Those listed here are likely to begin 2024-25 with each team’s AHL affiliate.

Capitals Re-Sign Ethen Frank, Chase Priskie, Mitchell Gibson

July 1, 9:01 a.m.: Washington has made both of these depth extensions official, also inking RFA goalie Mitchell Gibson to a one-year, two-way deal ($775K NHL/$100K AHL). Gibson, 25, was a fourth-round pick of the Caps in 2018. Last year was his first pro season after a four-year career at Harvard. He played mostly with the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays, recording a .899 SV%, 2.56 GAA and three shutouts in 42 games.

June 30, 8:14 p.m.: Just hours after issuing a qualifying offer to Ethen Frank, the Capitals have reached an agreement on a new contract with him.  PuckPedia reports (Twitter link) that they’ve re-signed the forward to a two-year contract.  The NHL portion is the minimum of $775K in both years while the AHL salary is $250K next season before converting to a one-way agreement for 2025-26.

Meanwhile, PuckPedia adds (Twitter link) that the Caps have also re-signed pending UFA blueliner Chase Priskie to a one-year, two-way agreement.  The deal pays $775K in the NHL and $400K in the minors.

Frank only has two full professional seasons under his belt after a five-year NCAA career.  In his rookie campaign, the 26-year-old put up a strong 30 goals and 19 assists in 57 games with AHL Hershey.

This past season, he followed it up with a similarly strong showing, notching 29 goals and 18 assists in 64 regular season games.  Despite that, he didn’t receive a recall from Washington during the season.  Frank finished up on a high note, collecting 10 goals and seven assists in 18 postseason appearances, helping the Bears take home the Calder Cup.

As for Priskie, the 28-year-old has four career NHL appearances under his belt from 2021-22 with Florida but has played exclusively in the minors since then.  This season, he had eight goals and 26 assists in 69 games with Hershey before adding 14 more points in 20 playoff contests.  He’s in line to play a big role for them again next season.

Metro Notes: Foerster, Capitals Recalls, Garand

Although 2020 first-round pick Tyson Foerster had an extremely encouraging 2022-23 season, scoring seven points in eight NHL games and 48 points in 66 AHL contests, he still has had to battle for an NHL job to start 2023-24. His chief opponent for a role on a scoring line in Philadelphia has been widely regarded as 22-year-old former college hockey star Bobby Brink, a high second-round pick of Philadelphia in 2019. Both players have had impressive training camps, but today PHLY Sports’ Charlie O’Connor reports that Foerster may be one step ahead in their competition.

O’Connor writes on X that Foerster is skating on a line at today’s practice alongside Flyers number-one center Sean Couturier and established top-six contributor Joel Farabee, while Brink “looks like an extra.” This could indicate that Foerster is ticketed for top-line NHL duty to start the season while Brink gets sent back to AHL Lehigh Valley, though it’s obviously not a sure thing. Anything can happen still at this stage of the preseason, though this development does suggest that Flyers fans should expect to see Foerster wearing the orange and black on opening night next week.

Some other notes from what is widely expected to be a hotly contested Metropolitan Division:

  • The Washington Capitals have recalled three players who had been previously waived and sent to the AHL’s Hershey Bears: forward Riley Sutter and Ethen Frank as well as defenseman Chase Priskie. Each player has likely been returned to the Capitals’ roster in order to beef up its lineup for the preseason, and the trio are all unlikely to factor into Washington’s NHL plans for opening night.
  •  The New York Rangers have sent goaltender Dylan Garand back to the AHL after recalling him just two days ago. While backup goaltender Jonathan Quick has struggled this preseason, the 21-year-old former WHL star is not yet believed to be under legitimate consideration for the backup role behind superstar netminder Igor Shesterkin. He’ll begin the year in Hartford, where he’ll look to continue the progress he made late last season into 2023-24, potentially becoming the Wolf Pack’s true number-one goalie over veteran Louis Domingue.

Washington Capitals Sign Chase Priskie

The Washington Capitals have signed one of their 2016 draft picks, albeit four seasons after his pro career began. Defenseman Chase Priskie is heading to the nation’s capital on a one-year, two-way contract worth $775K in the NHL and $350K in the minors, the Capitals announced today.

Washington selected Priskie, 27, with the 177th overall pick in 2016. After playing four seasons at Quinnipiac University, though, he didn’t sign with the team in the summer of 2019, and his exclusive draft rights lapsed. He instead landed a two-year entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, and he’s since spent time in the Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, and Anaheim Ducks organizations.

Last season, he split his time between the San Diego Gulls and Rochester Americans in the AHL thanks to a midseason trade of his NHL contract, tallying 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points in 58 games. 13 of those points came in just 16 games with the Gulls after the Ducks acquired him from Buffalo in exchange for defenseman Austin Strand on March 3. Standing at 6 feet and weighing 185 pounds, Priskie achieved AHL career-highs in goals and games played during the 2022-23 season.

During his collegiate tenure with Quinnipiac, he accumulated 116 points and 154 games and served as team captain for his last two seasons. He was recognized as a Hobey Baker Award finalist and was named to the ECAC First All-Star Team in 2018-19.

His only NHL experience came in a brief four-game stint with the Florida Panthers in 2021-22, although he was held off the scoresheet.

After the Caps acquired Joel Edmundson from Montreal, their defensive depth chart got a little deeper. With roster spots (and ice time) needed for younger players like Martin Fehervary, Rasmus Sandin, and Alexander Alexeyev, there’s little hope for Priskie to see much of any NHL ice this year. He will, however, join a formidable right-side defense in AHL Hershey that includes minor-league mainstay Dylan McIlrath and 2021 second-round pick Vincent Iorio, both of whom played large roles in helping Hershey capture this year’s Calder Cup.

Anaheim, Buffalo Complete Minor League Deal

According to a team release, the Anaheim Ducks and Buffalo Sabres have swapped a couple of minor league players. The Ducks have acquired Chase Priskie while the Sabres picked up Austin Strand.

Priskie is a 26-year-old right-defenseman who has scored four goals and nine points in 42 games with the Rochester Americans this season. He is in his fourth AHL season after a stellar college career at Quinnipiac and has played four career NHL games.

Strand is also a 26-year-old right-defenseman. He has scored two goals and eight points in 46 games with the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. The 6-foot-3 and 215 pound defender was called up to play five games with the Ducks this season and has played 26 NHL games in his career.

Florida Panthers Recall Four Players

With a lengthy injured list and five players on COVID-19 protocol, the Florida Panthers recalled four players from the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers today, per Florida Hockey Now’s George Richards.

Three of the callups have at least a handful of NHL games under their belt at this point (forward Grigori Denisenko and defensemen Matt Kiersted and Chase Priskie). Forward Cole Schwindt was also recalled and could make his NHL debut if Thursday night’s game against Los Angeles happens as scheduled.

Florida has a heavily depleted roster. Their COVID protocol list includes Carter Verhaeghe, Ryan Lomberg, Sam Bennett, Brandon Montour, and Radko Gudas. That’s bad enough on its own, but captain Aleksander Barkov, Mason Marchment, Noel Acciari, Markus Nutivaara, and Maxim Mamin are all unavailable due to injury. Gustav Forsling is out with an undisclosed illness.

Despite that, though, they still sit second in the Atlantic Division with an 18-6-4 record. They’ve dropped three out of four, though, as the absences begin to take their toll.

AHL Shuffle: 10/31/21

There’s a light schedule on this Halloween Sunday, with only five games on the NHL’s docket. Nevertheless, there should be some action on the recall and reassignment front as teams deal with short-term roster absences. We’ll keep track of those moves here.

Atlantic Division

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning recalled defenseman Cal Foote from his conditioning stint with the Syracuse Crunch today, per a team release. The 22-year-old, who’s arguably Tampa Bay’s top defense prospect, hasn’t played in the NHL yet this season after undergoing finger surgery during training camp. He’ll likely draw into the lineup on the team’s third pairing with Mikhail Sergachev, letting veteran Andrej Sustr, who’s averaged just 10:48 per game in seven contests, return to the press box or minors.
  • According to Florida Hockey Now’s George Richards, the Florida Panthers are re-assigning forward Zac Dalpe and defenseman Chase Priskie to the Charlotte Checkers. Dalpe was recalled just yesterday but was forced into action with Sam Bennett unable to go. Priskie’s shuffled up and down multiple times this season due to him not being waiver-eligible but hasn’t gotten into game action yet with the Panthers.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs returned goalie Michael Hutchinson to the Toronto Marlies yesterday. Petr Mrazek is once again healthy and after playing against the Detroit Red Wings last night, Hutchinson’s emergency recall is now over.
  • Forward Jack Studnicka has been returned to Providence by the Boston Bruins, according to the AHL’s transactions page. Studnicka, one of their top forward prospects, has one assist in three games with the big club this season.

Metropolitan Division

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, per the team. The move comes after Marcus Pettersson and Chad Ruhwedel were added to the COVID-19 protocol today. Joseph will likely make his season debut during this call-up after notching five points in 16 games with Pittsburgh last year, his first NHL action.

Central Division

  • St. Louis Blues head coach Craig Berube says that the team will recall goalie Joel Hofer from the Springfield Thunderbirds after Ville Husso entered COVID-19 protocol today. The 21-year-old Hofer was a fourth-round selection by the Blues in 2018 and could make his NHL debut this coming week as the team’s next two games fall on back-to-back nights. A WHL and World Junior champion, Hofer’s started strong with a .936 save percentage and 3-0-1 record in Springfield this year.

Pacific Division

  • The Anaheim Ducks recalled Sam Carrick from the San Diego Gulls after announcing forward Jakob Silfverberg entered the league’s COVID-19 protocol today, per The Athletic’s Eric Stephens. The news comes after Silfverberg’s mysterious brief disappearance from the Ducks’ public roster yesterday. This is Carrick’s second NHL stint this season, playing 9:51 in his only game with the Ducks in 2021-22.

AHL Shuffle: 10/15/21

An increasingly tight salary cap situation for many teams across the league has expectedly led to a lot of wheeling, dealing, and maneuvering early on this season, especially in the recalls and assignments department. We’ll keep track of all of today’s minor NHL to AHL and AHL to NHL roster moves right here.

Atlantic Division

  • Florida Hockey Now’s George Richards reports the Panthers re-assigned Chase Priskie and Maxim Mamin to the Charlotte Checkers. Priskie was recalled Thursday prior to the team’s season opener against Pittsburgh but was a healthy scratch. Mamin had previously been listed as a non-roster player. Mamin last played in the NHL with the Panthers in 2018-19, playing seven games, but has played in the KHL ever since.

Pacific Division

  • The Vegas Golden Knights assigned Peyton Krebs, Jonas Rondbjerg, and Jake Leschyshyn to the Henderson Silver Knights ahead of the team’s season opener tonight. All three played in Thursday night’s 6-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, and they’ll likely be recalled soon as the team continues to deal with injuries and absences in the bottom six.

Chase Priskie Signs With Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers have re-signed Chase Priskie, bringing him back on a one-year, two-way contract. Priskie was eligible for salary arbitration but decided not to file. The financial details have not yet been released.

Priskie, 25, will be eligible for Group VI unrestricted free agency next summer, unless he somehow secures a full-time spot on the Panthers blueline. That’s unlikely given he hasn’t played a single game above the AHL to this point, but he can still represent some valuable depth for the upcoming season.

Signed by the Carolina Hurricanes after deciding to test free agency in the summer of 2019, Priskie was actually the top college player available when draft rights expired that August. He was seen as a player that could potentially push for an NHL roster spot quickly, given his success at the college level, but the Hurricanes put him in the minor leagues with the Charlotte Checkers given their already full defensive group. In Charlotte, he recorded 31 points in 52 games, but was included in a deadline trade to acquire Vincent Trocheck.

In Florida, he still hasn’t cracked the NHL, and given he is still waiver-exempt for another year, might have to wait for an injury (or several) to get his chance.
