Metropolitan Notes: Carlsson, Cammarata, Lundqvist

March 30, 2017 at 1:25 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Columbus Blue Jackets have assigned Gabriel Carlsson to the Cleveland Monsters, bringing him over from the Sweden earlier than expected. The 2015 first-round selection is expected to join the Monsters this weekend and play on Saturday against the Chicago Wolves. The defenseman signed his entry-level contract last summer.

20-years old, Carlsson has the makings of an excellent shutdown defender in the NHL. His size, skating and positioning are all good enough for him to make an impact in professional hockey already, as he has in Sweden for the past two and a half years. In 40 games for Linkopings this season, he recorded four points and generally established himself as a presence in the defensive zone. With the Blue Jackets’ depth on defense, Carlsson will likely be given time to adjust and develop in the AHL next season, but will be pushing for a call-up before long.

  • The New York Islanders have signed Taylor Cammarata to an amateur tryout with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers after his season at the University of Minnesota. A former third-round pick of the Isles, Cammarata never did replicate the outstanding scoring pace he found in the USHL, often out-muscled by bigger players in the college ranks. While he still possesses excellent skill, his 5’7″ 150-lbs frame is holding him back from making the most of it. He’ll try to show that he can be a difference maker in the AHL and try to secure an entry-level contract down the road.
  • Henrik Lundqvist will apparently play four out of the five remaining games for the New York Rangers, only getting a break in one of the back-to-back matchups to end the season next weekend. Since hitting rock bottom by allowing seven goals on 27 shots to the Dallas Stars on January 17th, Lundqvist has turned his season around and shown that he can still be an elite goaltender in this league. With a 12-6-2 record and .922 save percentage in the 21 games since then, he’s ready for another long playoff run for the Rangers. He’ll likely face the Montreal Canadiens in the first round, a team he has struggled with in his career. Holding a 12-17-3 record and .898 save percentage against the Habs all-time, he’ll have to improve on those numbers if the Rangers want to advance to the second round.

Snapshots: Protected List, Stalock, Fritz

March 29, 2017 at 4:23 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The NHL has announced that it will now release publicly both the protected and available lists for the upcoming expansion draft when they are distributed to teams around the league. This comes as a reversal of their previous decision, and one that fans will embrace. While the front offices of many teams likely didn’t want the list to become public because of potential public relations or player morale problems—incessant critiquing of their jobs is something they live with, but not something they enjoy—it is something that fans of the sport wanted so overwhelmingly that the league will now consent.

Expected to be released on June 18th, the actual date of the release has not yet been announced. Either way, it will be an exiting day for fans and media members alike that will have a few days to pick through the rosters and project who will be picked by the Vegas Golden Knights. Teams must submit their protected list on the 17th, while the team will be announced at some point on the 21st.

  • Alex Stalock has been recalled by the Minnesota Wild, and he is expected to make the start tomorrow night against the Ottawa Senators. The team will give Devan Dubnyk three days off before he returns Saturday, given his struggles this month. After leading the league in save percentage for much of the season, Dubnyk has posted an .889 number in March as the team has fallen out of first place in the Central Division. Stalock will be making his first NHL start since February of last season.
  • The New York Islanders have signed Tanner Fritz to a two-year extension starting next season. It will be a two-way deal, and Fritz had been playing on an AHL deal with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers up to this point. The former Ohio State Buckeye broke out this season in the AHL, scoring 40 points in 61 games. The 25-year old is still waiting for his NHL debut, but this is a solid step in that direction.
  • Dallas has recalled young defenseman Julius Honka from the AHL, bringing him back up for the end of the season. Honka, the team’s first-round pick from 2014, played ten games for the team earlier this year and did not look overmatched. He has excelled in his three years at the AHL level, recording at least 31 points in each season and generally moving the puck with swift, crisp passes. He’ll get another tryout this spring before likely being installed full-time on the blue line for the Stars next year.

Jake Bischoff Signs Two-Year Deal With New York Islanders

March 28, 2017 at 11:01 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After announcing the amateur tryouts for Matt Gaudreau and John Stevens earlier today, the New York Islanders have also signed Jake Bischoff to a two-year, entry-level contract. While the team did not reveal whether the deal was for this year or next, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports that Bischoff will sign an ATO for the remainder of the season and report to Bridgeport.

The 22-year old Bischoff was the Islanders’ seventh round pick in 2012, and was voted the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in his senior season at the University of Minnesota. A rock on the blueline for the Gophers this season, Bischoff registered 32 points in 38 games and served as an alternate captain for the second year. His excellent two-way game has developed even further this year, as he continues to look more and more like a future NHL defenseman.

While the Islanders try to make the playoffs in the NHL, the Sound Tigers are desperately trying to catch either Hershey or Providence for a spot in the AHL postseason. Bischoff will help them try to do that, but a five point spread with nine games remaining will be a very difficult task.

Morning Notes: Gaudreau, Street, Pedrie, Vermin

March 28, 2017 at 10:24 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Don’t worry Flames fans, the headline “Islanders Sign Gaudreau” shouldn’t scare you, at least not in 2017. The New York team has signed Johnny’s younger brother Matt Gaudreau to an amateur tryout for their AHL affiliate. The younger Gaudreau has just completed his senior season at Boston College, where he scored 35 points in 40 games.

Not blessed with the exceptional skill of his brother, Gaudreau is similarly sized at 5’9 150-lbs and must rely on his quickness and playmaking ability. While he does have potential to play at a higher level, his offensive upside isn’t as high as his brother and thus will have a hard time getting a look at the NHL level.

  • The Detroit Red Wings have called up Ben Street on emergency condition, but Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports that it will turn into a regular recall should he not play in tonight’s game. The team is playing the third of three consecutive games, likely leading to some soreness and minor injuries.
  • Steve Zipay of Newsday reports that Vince Pedrie of Penn State may be close to a deal with the New York Rangers, as the free agent forward sent out a now deleted Instagram photo with the caption “It comes with a heavy heart that I announce I will not be returning to Penn State for my remaining two years…I am extremely excited to start my professional hockey career with the New York Rangers.”  Pedrie scored 30 points in 39 games in just his sophomore season, though he is already 23-years old.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have sent Joel Vermin back to the AHL after playing in the previous four games for the club. The 25-year old winger has just three points in 15 games in the NHL this season, and with the team getting healthier, he’ll now return to help the Syracuse Crunch into the playoffs.

Prospect Notes: White, Stevens, Keller

March 27, 2017 at 11:10 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Even though Colin White signed an amateur tryout yesterday with the Ottawa Senators, it doesn’t necessarily preclude him from signing his entry-level deal this year and playing for the team down the stretch. Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia is reporting that the front office will watch him play for Binghamton this week and continue negotiations.

For what it’s worth, Garrioch guesses that White will sign an ELC once the Senators have a playoff spot locked up. With the team currently eight points up on the ninth place team, it won’t take long. Should White sign his ELC for this year, he will burn a year regardless of how many games he plays.

  • The New York Islanders have signed John Stevens from Northeastern, inking the captain to a two-year entry-level deal. The son of the Los Angeles Kings’ associate head coach, Stevens scored 28 points in 25 games in his final year. A big defensive centerman, Stevens is a possible option for a bottom-six in the NHL down the road. While he doesn’t have the high-end offensive ceiling that some of his teammates have, his game will likely translate nicely to the professional ranks.
  • CapFriendly notes that newly signed Clayton Keller will earn a $25K bonus should he play five of the last seven games for the Arizona Coyotes. Despite not actually paying a ton of salary this season, the Coyotes are actually over the salary cap and are using long-term injured reserve space. This means Keller’s bonus would appear as a penalty for next season.

John Tavares Future In New York

March 26, 2017 at 4:00 pm CDT | by Brett Barrett 7 Comments

Will John Tavares be wearing a New York Islanders jersey next season? What about the season after that?

The Islanders captain will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2018. Like Steven Stamkos before him, there’s a brewing media storm about the Ontario boy coming home to play with the Maple Leafs. But with Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander all coming up for new contracts in the next three years, the Maple Leafs wouldn’t be able to afford Tavares without major re-structuring. But that doesn’t mean Tavares will copy Stamkos and sign a long-term extension.

While the Islanders are in the midst of a playoff battle (two points behind final wildcard spot with a game in hand), it hasn’t been a great year for the franchise. After a few debatable free agency moves, arena problems, and a coaching change, the Islanders have gone from a 100-point season and visit to the second round to fighting to make the playoffs at all. Tavares has publicly stated that he’s interested in signing an extension, but many hockey insiders have wondered about his willingness to sign long-term based on the questions surrounding the Islanders. Last week, TSN’s Darren Dreger said he “wouldn’t be shocked” if the Islanders explored trading Tavares this summer, and Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman re-iterated those rumors on Hockey Night In Canada last night.

It’s likely that Tavares is worth somewhere between $8.5MM and $10MM on a long-term contract. Our Gavin Lee suggested Stamkos and Anze Kopitar as good comparables for Tavares. The Islanders will have the space two years from now to offer that money, with Jaroslav Halak, Mikhail Grabovski, and Nikolai Kulemin all coming off the books that summer.

Friedman pointed out that the Islanders have offered Tavares’ agent, Pat Brisson, a job running their hockey operations at least once. The idea was to make Tavares more comfortable signing long-term. If the team struggles to get Tavares locked up and decides to trade him this summer, the right trade could set the franchise up for the next decade.

If Tavares signs long-term, then the club will have to make moves to surround him with the talent to become a Stanley Cup contender; if he wants to move on, then it will be a full-on rebuild for the Islanders.

Tuukka Rask Out Tonight With LBI

March 25, 2017 at 2:10 pm CDT | by Brett Barrett 1 Comment

The Boston Bruins are facing a near must-win situation against the New York Islanders this evening, but they’ll be missing a key part of their team.

Goaltender Tuukka Rask is out with a lower-body injury, according to the team’s Twitter account. Anton Khudobin will get the start instead. We reported earlier today that the Bruins have recalled Zane McIntyre on an emergency basis to back up Khudobin.

It’s a very important game for the Bruins; they’re currently sitting outside the playoffs with 82 points. The Islanders also have 82 points, but have a game in hand on Boston. The Bruins were in the third divisional playoff spot last weekend, but have lost four in a row while the Maple Leafs have won three straight to pass them. Toronto is now three points ahead of Boston and comfortably in the third spot in the Atlantic Division.

This isn’t the first time Rask has missed an important game for his team. Last season, he caught a 24-hour flu bug and was out for the Bruins’ final game of the season, a must-win game against the Senators. Backup Jonas Gustavsson started instead; the Bruins lost 6-1 and missed the playoffs. Back in the Sochi Olympics, Rask missed Finland’s semi-final game versus Sweden with another stomach flu. The Swedes beat them, and Rask returned for the Bronze Medal Game, which he won.

Boston Recalls Goalie Zane McIntyre On Emergency Basis

March 25, 2017 at 10:28 am CDT | by Glen Miller Leave a Comment

The Boston Bruins announced this morning that they have recalled goaltender Zane McIntyre from Providence of the AHL on an emergency basis. McIntyre has appeared in eight games for the Bruins this season but like his colleague, Anton Khudobin, he has struggled to provide the club with quality play between the pipes, registering a record of 0 – 4 – 1 while posting a GAA of nearly 4 and a S% of just 0.858.

It’s been a different story in Providence for the 24-year-old goalie, as he leads the AHL in both GAA (2.03) and S% (0.931). His strong play in net for the Baby Bruins led to his selection to appear in the 2017 AHL All Star game.

Joe Haggerty of CSN New England suggests the recall is linked to Tuukka Rask not skating yesterday and may mean he will be unavailable for tonight’s game in Brooklyn against the Islanders. Rask’s absence, even for just one game, would be bad news for a Bruins team that has lost four straight and now sits three points behind Toronto for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Ryan Strome Out Indefinitely With Broken Wrist

March 23, 2017 at 11:20 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, the Islanders have received some bad news after their game last night. Ryan Strome has suffered a broken wrist and will be out for the rest of the season, if not the whole playoffs. Head coach Doug Weight had said last night that he would be out “this weekend and probably longer.” "<strong

Strome injured the wrist on a hit from Brady Skjei in the second period, on a play that didn’t look all that dangerous. The much maligned forward had been playing better of late, though was still in the midst of another disappointing season. His 13 goals and 30 points will be the season totals, still not realizing the full potential he showed in his sophomore season. That year, he had 50 points while playing as one of the Islanders’ best defensive forwards but has taken a step back in his development.

The Islanders would have to go on quite a deep playoff run to see him back in uniform this year, which seems like a long-shot given their current situation. Sitting two points back of the Boston Bruins for the final spot, the second wildcard team will have to go through whoever comes out on top of the Metropolitan Division in the first round before playing the winner of the other two. It’s a tough route for any team, let alone one losing a young forward like Strome.

In his place, Staple assumes that Shane Prince or Alan Quine will be inserted. While both are established enough to not miss a beat, it would be interesting to see the Islanders reach down to the minors and recall Michael Dal Colle from Bridgeport at some point. The former fifth-overall pick has yet to make his NHL debut, but has had a successful (if unspectacular) rookie season in professional hockey with 35 points in 63 games. He would definitely give the lineup another shot of youth alongside Josh Ho-Sang and Anthony Beauvillier, something they might thrive off of this late in the year.

Jaroslav Halak Recalled From Bridgeport

March 23, 2017 at 9:20 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The New York Islanders have recalled Jaroslav Halak from the AHL in time for their game against Pittsburgh tomorrow night. Halak has been playing for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers since the beginning of 2017, after clearing waivers on New Year’s Eve. Jaroslav Halak

In the AHL the veteran netminder has proven he can still perform, going 17-7-1 with a .925 save percentage. While he’ll likely never again be the 2010 Halak that carried the Montreal Canadiens all the way to the Conference Finals, he should still be more effective than Jean-Francois Berube in a backup role.

The Islanders are in the thick of the playoff race after winning last night against the New York Rangers. After seeing the Maple Leafs leapfrog Boston yesterday, New York is now chasing the Bruins and find themselves two points back with a game in hand. They will face the Bruins on Saturday in an all important matchup, the second half of a back-to-back. Whether Halak starts in one of the two is still yet to be decided (or at least announced) but it does seem to coincide with the call-up.

Halak was part of a three goaltender rotation earlier in the year, but the Isles had buried him in the minors to save almost a million dollars (pro-rated for the length of his stay in the AHL) in cap space. After trying to move him at the deadline, the team instead kept him around for exactly this scenario. Now he can try to help them into the playoffs and once there, maybe work some of his magic. The 31-year old has a career .924 save percentage in the postseason.

Arthur Staple of Newsday was first to announce a recall was imminent.
