NHL Prospects Receiving NCAA Conference Awards

Tomorrow night kicks off the final weekend of conference tournaments in the NCAA, with Selection Sunday setting the stage for the NCAA Tournament beginning next week. With the collegiate regular season a thing of the past, the conferences haves used the gathering of their top teams ahead of this weekend’s games as a chance to hold end of the year banquets and announce award winners. To no surprise, many notable NHL prospects were also among those honored.

Perhaps the top pro prospect in the NCAA and the favorite to win the Hobey Baker Award this year, it was predictable that Cale Makar (COL) would first be unanimously named the Hockey East Player of the Year. The dynamic defenseman was the No. 4 overall pick by the Avalanche two years ago and has lived up to the hype through two seasons at the University of Massachusetts. Makar was one of six UMass players to also be named all-league players, including Mario Ferraro (SJ) and John Leonard (SJ) and scoring champion Mitchell Chaffee. 2018 first-round pick Joel Farabee (PHI) was named Hockey East’s Rookie of the Year following a point-per-game freshman campaign for Boston University. Similarly impressive teenager Cayden Primeau (MTL) was named Goaltender of the Year, backstopping Northeastern University with a .935 save percentage and 2.02 GAA. Providence College’s Vincent Desharnais (EDM) and the University of Maine’s Chase Pearson (DET) were also honored as the Defensive Defenseman and Defensive Forward of the year, respectively.

In the Big Ten Conference, recent Red Wings signing Taro Hirose (DET) out of Michigan State University was named Player of the Year, as well as scoring champion as the NCAA’s leading point-getter. The University of Minnesota’s Sammy Walker (TB) was named Freshman of the Year after the seventh-round pick surprised many this season. Quinn Hughes (VAN) of the University of Michigan and Evan Barratt (CHI) of Penn State University were other notable Big Ten stars, earning first-team all-conference considerations.

Elsewhere, a trifecta of NHL hopefuls won both Player of the Year and Defenseman of the Year for their conference. Adam Fox (CAR) is the most notable, as the Harvard University product enjoyed yet another dominant year in the ECAC and could be an impact player immediately once he joins the Hurricanes. Jimmy Schuldt hopes to do the same wherever he ends up, as the priority free agent from St. Cloud State University was named both Player of the Year and Defensive Defenseman of the Year for the NCHC and will push for a National Championship this year before turning his attention to the pros. Finally, Atlantic Hockey’s undisputed top player was Joe Duszak (TOR) of Mercyhurst University, who recently signed with the Maple Leafs after leading all NCAA defensemen in scoring.

 

Other awards of note include the University of Minnesota-Duluth’s Scott Perunovich (STL) winning the NCHC’s Offensive Defenseman of the Year Award for the second year in a row and Cooper Zech (BOS) being named the WCHA’s Rookie of the Year despite already leaving Ferris State University after just one year for the AHL’s Providence Bruins. With the NCAA postseason still to come, there will be more honors on the way for college hockey’s top players, but the conference awards already show that the best of the collegiate ranks includes many NHL draft picks and free agent signings, who will hopefully go on to continue their strong play at the next level.

 

 

2019 NHL Draft Lottery Date And Odds Revealed

The date of the NHL Draft Lottery, what fans of the 15 teams who don’t make the playoffs wait for, has been announced and those fans won’t have to wait very long this season. The NHL has revealed that the lottery will be held on Tuesday, April 9th this season. The lottery has typically taken place much later in the month, but instead will come just three days after the end of the regular season this year.

As usual, the league notes that the lottery will take place in Toronto and will be nationally televised by NBC Sports, Sportsnet, and TVA. As opposed to last year, when the lottery took place over two separate sessions during playoff game intermissions, the event will return to being an independent hour-long show, beginning at 8pm ET.

As for the lottery odds, the league has opted not to change the odds that they used for last season’s draft lottery. The odds have frequently changed from year-to-year in the past, sometimes as a reaction to the results of the draw or, in last year’s case, to accommodate the addition of an added lottery team. However, after a draw last season that saw both the team with the worst record – the Buffalo Sabres – hold on to the top pick, as well as an exciting leap up the board by the Carolina Hurricanes, it seems the NHL is content to stick with it’s current format. Below are the odds at winning the first overall pick for each of the final spots in the league standings:

Each team’s odds at the No. 2 and No. 3 pick increase marginally after the first ping pong ball is selected. As for draft lottery story lines to keep an eye on, the Colorado Avalanche continue to be the team to watch. As holder’s of the Ottawa Senators’ first-round pick, the Avs are likely to have the best odds at picking first. However, they themselves may also be a lottery team, which would only further increase their odds at the top pick and may even land them two top-four picks in the coming draft. The specific player “won” by the lottery winner is also becoming a more intriguing discussion; initially believed to be USNTDP standout center Jack Hughes beyond a doubt, there are now some rumblings that Finnish winger Kaapo Kakko could be the preference instead, mirroring the Nico Hischier–Nolan Patrick debate from two years ago. Only the team whose ping pong ball is lucky on April 9th will have to make that call, but it’s a tough decision that any club would gladly take. 

Jack Eichel, Jakub Voracek To Have Disciplinary Hearings

First Connor McDavid, now Jack Eichel. Even the NHL stars are finding themselves in trouble as the Department of Player Safety announced that the Buffalo Sabres’ star will have a hearing for hitting Colorado Avalanche forward Carl Soderberg in the head Saturday. Minutes after that, the DoPS also announced that Philadelphia Flyers forward Jakub Voracek will have a hearing for interfering with New York Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk.

The hit occurred in the second period of the Avalanche’s 3-0 victory (video here) where Eichel intercepts Soderberg who has the puck and clearly puts his shoulder into Soderberg’s face. The play resulted in a two-minute minor for an illegal check to the head. Coincidentally, the Eichel’s hit came not long after he took a severe hit to the shoulder from Colorado’s Nikita Zadorov that knocked his helmet off. While Eichel was upset at the lack of a call and then being hit with a penalty for his hit, it does mean a suspension of some kind is likely. Eichel has never been suspended before by the league.

Voracek will also get a hearing after interfering with Boychuk during the third period of the Flyers’ 5-2 win over the Islanders (video here). In the play, Voracek saw Boychuk streaking towards the puck and back-checked him in the head, knocking him to the ice. Boychuk was forced to leave the game and did not return. Boychuk also wasn’t at practice this morning, according to Newsday’s Andrew Gross. Voracek received a five-minute major for interference. Voracek has never been suspended either.

 

Tyson Barrie Hopes To Sign Contract Extension This Summer

Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie has been with the organization since they drafted him in the third round back in 2009.  He has since played in 470 games with Colorado but with some promising young players on the horizon, he has been part of trade speculation over the last couple of years.  With one year left on his deal, Barrie told Mike Chambers of the Denver Post that he wants to remain with the team and get an extension done this offseason:

I love it here. I’ve been here my whole career and I’d like to be a part of it going forward. But at the end of the day, that’s up to management and where they see this going. That’s probably a conversation for a later date. But this is the second home for me. It’s become home. I spend a lot of time here. I love the guys. I love the organization. At the end of the day, it’s a business. But I do love it here.

Barrie’s offensive prowess (including 103 points over 132 games over the past two seasons) has made his $5.5MM AAV a relative bargain and considering he’ll be 29 at the start of 2020-21 when his next contract will begin, it stands to reason that he’ll be looking at a nice raise on his next deal.  That presents a bit of a conundrum for the Avs who are a team that doesn’t typically come close to spending to the Upper Limit (and will be handing winger Mikko Rantanen a significant contract as an RFA this summer).  Is it worth handing out a big contract to Barrie knowing their financial limitations and the fact that they have quality prospects like Cale Makar and Conor Timmins in the system?

Makar is one of the top prospects in the league and is having a dominant second season in college.  There’s a good chance that he’ll turn pro next season and should be able to play a regular role right away.  Timmins has yet to play this season due to a concussion but his upside is still high.  Both youngsters are strong at the offensive end and are right-hand shots like Barrie.  Can they justify having all three on the roster a few years from now?

That’s what makes the trade potential for Barrie intriguing.  Right-shot defenders are in high demand and his skillset is one that many teams would covet.  Colorado could get a significant return for his services so even if Barrie wants to sign an extension quickly (he can do so as of July 1st), it wouldn’t be surprising to see his name resurface in trade speculation closer to the draft.

Gabriel Landeskog Out Four To Six Weeks

The Colorado Avalanche are trying their best to fight for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, but will now have to do it without the services of their captain. Gabriel Landeskog will be out four to six weeks with an upper-body injury, essentially ending his regular season.

Colorado currently sits just four points behind the Minnesota Wild for the final wild card spot, and are the only non-playoff team with a positive goal differential in the Western Conference. A huge part of that differential though has been the play of Landeskog and his usual linemates, All-Stars Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. That trio (though not always lining up together) has been the driving force behind any Avalanche success all season. The 26-year old Landeskog had already set career highs with 33 goals and 69 points this season, and had scored a league-leading nine game winners.

In fact, by nearly any metric or statistic Landeskog was in the midst of the best season of his career. There are few players who can impact the game in the same number of ways he can, engaging physically while still being an excellent offensive weapon. A loss like this will not only be felt on the ice, but in the locker room as well. His leadership qualities are heralded as some of the best in the league, leading to him being named captain at just 19 years old—the youngest in history at the time.

All hope is not lost for Colorado, but the idea of them catching Minnesota and doing any damage in the playoffs is certainly more daunting now. The team will play their final game of the season almost exactly four weeks from today, meaning he very well could miss the first round of the postseason if they do somehow pull it off.

Of course, some Avalanche fans will be excited even through the disappointment of seeing Landeskog go down. The team still holds the Ottawa Senators first-round pick in addition to their own, and would have two shots at first overall in the draft lottery if they miss the playoffs. The possibility of getting the top two picks in the draft doesn’t come around often, even if it would be a minuscule chance at this point.

Minor Transactions: 03/08/19

After the Columbus Blue Jackets failed to gain any ground on the Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes last night, the latter two will try to spread the gap even further tonight. The Hurricanes welcome in the powerhouse Winnipeg Jets while the Canadiens continue their west coast swing with a stop off in Anaheim to meet John Gibson and the Ducks. Things could start to look quite dire for the Blue Jackets if they fall back even further, a notion that seemed impossible when they acquired several assets at the deadline.

  • It’s a day that ends in Y, so Matt Read is involved in another transaction. This time the veteran forward has been recalled by the Minnesota Wild, his seventh move since the beginning of March. Read still has just six games played for the Wild this season.
  • Matt Luff is not quite at Read’s level, but he’s used to the assignment notice himself. Today Luff was sent back to the minor leagues by the Los Angeles Kings after just two games on his most recent call-up. Luff has 11 points in 33 games for the Kings this season, including a goal on Tuesday night against the Canadiens.
  • Hudson Fasching has been returned to the Tucson Roadrunners without playing a game for the Arizona Coyotes. The 23-year old was acquired by the Coyotes last summer, but still has yet to get into any game action at the NHL level. In 22 contests with the Buffalo Sabres, Fasching recorded three points.
  • Karson Kuhlman is heading back to the AHL after just one day with the Boston Bruins. The 23-year old forward has two points in five games for the Bruins this season, his first year of professional hockey.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers have sent Justin Bailey back to the AHL, the team announced. Bailey, acquired earlier this season from the Buffalo Sabres, was held scoreless in six games with the Flyers on the call-up and will look to spark his offense back down with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
  • The AHL’s registry lists Colorado Avalanche forward Sheldon Dries as having been returned to the Colorado Eagles. The moves comes as little surprise, as Dries has been a frequent back-and-forth player this season, suiting up for 40 games with the Avs and 13 with the Eagles.
  • Just prior to puck drop on their match-up with the Montreal Canadiens, the Anaheim Ducks have announced that young forwards Sam Steel and Kevin Roy have been reassigned to the AHL. The duo have played the majority of the season with the San Diego Gulls but Steel, a 2016 first-round pick, has skated in 16 games with the Ducks while Roy, the former Northeastern University standout, has seen just three games.

Poll: Which Western Wildcard Team Has Best Chance To Reach Playoffs

The Minnesota Wild pulled off a big victory Saturday when they defeated the Western Conference’s top team in the Calgary Flames. Not only was it a big win, but with five straight victories, it has propelled Minnesota into the final wild card spot for the upcoming Stanley Cup playoffs, something that seemed unlikely just a week ago. Suddenly what looked to already be a contentious race for the final playoff spot, it has become even more muddled as four teams are vying for the final two wild card spots.

The Dallas Stars currently hold the first wildcard spot in the Western Conference with 71 points, while Minnesota owns that second spot with 70 points. However, two other teams are right there, including the Arizona Coyotes who have 69 points, while the Colorado Avalanche have 68 points.

Dallas is the most interesting team as they were buyers at the trade deadline, picking up defenseman Ben Lovejoy and Mats Zuccarello. However, while Zuccarello looked to be a good fit who energized the Stars’ struggling second line after posting a goal and an assist in his first game, he broke his arm late in that first game after blocking a shot and will now miss at least three more weeks. That hasn’t stopped the Stars, however, who have won two in a row and three of their last four.

The Coyotes have also been red hot, having gone from a team that had almost no chance at a playoff spot earlier this year to a team that has won six straight and nine of their last 11 games and actually could catch the Vegas Golden Knights as they are only four points behind them in the Pacific Division. All of this is with a gluttony of injuries to Coyotes’ players. The team is expected to get Jason Demers back from injury on Tuesday and could get Michael Grabner back within the week. Throw in the impressive play of Darcy Kuemper in goal and the team has been hard to beat.

Colorado is the forgotten team, who early on seemed to be the obvious candidate to seize the third seed in the Central Division, but the team bottomed out, struggling immensely throughout December, January and part of February. However, the Avalanche have won six of their last nine and look to be fighting their way back into the playoffs. Armed with some of the best players in the NHL in Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, the Avalanche have every chance to force their way back into the playoffs.

Semyon Varlamov Hopes To Re-Sign In Colorado

The Colorado Avalanche haven’t received the level of goaltending they hoped for from Philipp Grubauer after they acquired him from the Washington Capitals last summer and signed him to a three-year contract. He was supposed to replace the outgoing Jonathan Bernier while allowing the team to let Semyon Varlamov walk into free agency without having to pay up for his services. Unfortunately Varlamov has vastly outplayed Grubauer, giving the Avalanche a tough decision on what to do in net this offseason. For what it’s worth, Varlamov has now publicly announced that he hopes to stay in Colorado after speaking with Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic (subscription required):

I want to stay here because I love this team and hopefully I am going to stay and hopefully I’m going to re-sign my next contract with the Avalanche.

Varlamov, 30, has done everything necessary to complicate the decision. The veteran netminder has a .911 save percentage on the year, quite a bit higher than Grubauer’s .896. Notably though, the team does have former KHL star Pavel Francouz playing well in the minor leagues. Francouz is also an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, and retaining him would likely cost more than the $690K he is earning this year. Still that number would likely be much lower than whatever Varlamov is asking for, given his history as a starter in the NHL and $5.9MM cap hit this season.

The Avalanche have quite a bit to consider this offseason given the restricted free agent status of players like Mikko Rantanen, Alexander Kerfoot, J.T. Compher and Nikita Zadorov, but the decision in net is a make-or-break one for the 2019-20 year. That is easy to see after the team struggled through the middle portion of the season despite still having some of the most explosive offensive players in the league. Bad goaltending can sink a good team, and Grubauer’s play this season has simply not been good enough for a team that considers themselves playoff contenders.

When we asked earlier this season if the Avalanche should trade Varlamov, the overwhelming response was that it was time to move on. The trade deadline came and went without much action though, and now Varlamov has them on the brink of a wild card playoff appearance.

Nick Henry Signs Entry-Level Contract With Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche have signed draft pick Nick Henry to a three-year entry-level contract according to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports. Henry is currently playing with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL, and will see his entry-level deal kick in for the 2019-20 season.

Henry, 19, is having an excellent season in what is probably his final year of junior hockey. The forward had 40 points for the Regina Pats before being traded to Lethbridge, where he has another 43 in 37 games. That 83-point total is a huge bounce-back from what was an extremely disappointing 2017-18 season and now obviously has him on track to join the Avalanche organization next year. He received his first taste last fall with a stint at training camp, but will likely join the Colorado Eagles in a few months time.

If Henry can make an impact down the line it looks to be quite the 2017 draft class for the Avalanche. Conor Timmins, their second-round pick from that year, is close to finally making his return from injury and fourth-overall pick Cale Makar is having an outstanding year at the collegiate level. Henry’s Hurricanes are headed to the WHL playoffs, where he’ll try to lead them to a Memorial Cup berth.

Colorado’s Matt Nieto Out 6-8 Weeks

What was originally considered to be a minor injury has turned out to be anything but for Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Nieto. Just days after stating Nieto was “dinged up” and would miss Saturday night’s game, BSN Denver’s AJ Haefele relays news from GM Joe Sakic tonight that Nieto is expected to miss six to eight weeks with an undisclosed lower-body injury.

The timeline leaves little to no chance that Nieto will return in the regular season. If the Avalanche make the playoffs, his availability would be in question through at least the first round, if not longer. It’s a tough blow for both the team and the player in what has been a career year for Nieto. The 2011 second-round pick has been nothing if not consistent over his NHL career as a bottom-six forward. Including this season, Nieto has recorded at least double-digit points in 58 or more games in each of his six seasons. His best year to date came in his sophomore campaign with the San Jose Sharks, when he registered 27 points in 72 games, although he nearly matched that total last season in Colorado. However, with 22 points already through 58 games this year, Nieto was on pace to finish the 2017-18 season with 30 points. This injury ensures that won’t happen, robbing Nieto of a new career best and the Avalanche of one of their top-nine scoring forwards.

Fortunately, Sakic and company did manage to add Derick Brassard from the Florida Panthers at the deadline at a relative bargain rate and he will be in the lineup right away tonight when the Avs face those same Panthers. Even amidst a miserable season for the veteran forward, Brassard is a major addition for Colorado and should arguably be considered the best non-first line forward on the club the rest of the way. If he plays up to that expectation, he will more than make up for Nieto’s absence and could be the key to the Avalanche winning a playoff spot and Nieto seeing the ice again this season. Beyond Brassard, Tyson Jost, Sven Andrighetto, and Sheldon Dries are among the others who could be asked to step up in Nieto’s stead. The fate of the Avs’ season may rest in their ability to emulate their fallen teammate’s work ethic and tenacity on the ice.
