Vinni Lettieri Signs Two-Year Deal With New York Rangers

After it was rumored yesterday that Vinni Lettieri was being pursued by both the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers, he has signed a two-year deal with the Rangers and will join Hartford for the rest of the season on an amateur tryout.

The University of Minnesota forward had a breakout season this year with 37 points in 38 games but saw his squad eliminated by Notre Dame in the NCAA tournament. He’ll now head to professional hockey at 22-years old and try to continue his big year. Finally putting his exceptional offensive skill to work, Lettieri’s skating took a step forward this year.

Lettieri always looked like he should be putting up more points than he was, but could never quite dominate like his skill level showed. Now moving to a bigger, faster league it could take him a while to adjust again. If he can though, he has a high offensive ceiling and the drive to compete at the next level.

Michael Russo of the Star Tribune was the first to report that Lettieri had come to an agreement.

Matt Iacopelli To Sign With Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks may have missed out on Vinni Lettieri earlier today, but they are close to locking up another one of their own prospects. According to John Buccigross of ESPN Matt Iacopelli will sign with the ’Hawks now that Western Michigan has been eliminated from the NCAA tournament.

A former dominant scoring threat in the USHL, Iacopelli was drafted in the third round by the ’Hawks in 2014. This season saw him breakout at the college level with 20 goals and 36 points, leading the Broncos in scoring. Though he was only in his second year of college, Iacopelli will turn 23 in May and is likely closer to his peak than many other prospects.

With an NHL-ready shot, Iacopelli can score from just about anywhere in the offensive zone if given the time and space. It’s creating that space that will give him trouble at the next level, as though he’s big enough and has been billed as a power forward since his draft year, he sometimes lacks the ability to grind below the goal line and force opponents into mistakes.

He’s entering an organization who has continued to excel at turning NCAA prospects into high-caliber NHL players, as most recently evidenced with John Hayden’s transition to the league. If Iacopelli commits to learning their systems and playing whichever role they lay out for him, it’s not unthinkable that he’ll find success at the higher levels.

After the University of Minnesota was eliminated from the NCAA tournament yesterday by the upstart Notre Dame team, it was the beginning of a whole new chapter for senior Vinni Lettieri. According to Michael Russo of the Star Tribune, the free agent center is being pursued by the New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks.

Lettieri had 37 points in 38 games this season for the Gophers, breaking out and scoring double-digit goals for the first time in his college career. The undersized forward should decide in the next few days where he’ll make his professional debut.

Central Notes: Blackhawks, Bednar, Sakic, Belfour

The Chicago Blackhawks are seeing an increase in their performance thanks to better puck possession writes the Chicago Tribune’s Chris Hine. Aside from the metrics, where the Hawks are dominating opponents in five-on-five, but Hine is quick to point out that the puck possession is nothing near what the Hawks posted during their Cup runs in 2010, 2013, and 2015, where they were first, fourth, and second respectively. They’ve been twelfth since the beginning of February in Corsi percentage, and thirteenth for the season. While players are also feeling more comfort as the playoffs loom, advanced stats mavens will be quick to point out that it’s a far cry from Chicago’s championship-caliber seasons.

In other Central Division news:

  • Jared Bednar is expected to return to the Avalanche next season reports the Denver Post’s Terry Frei. Bednar is quoted as saying that the franchise is “working toward something” instead of it just being a one off “horrific” season. No one would blame Bednar for wanting to walk away from a job that Patrick Roy all but ran away from. In the same vein, would it be fair to fire the first year coach? Frei points out that the Avs are on pace to be the worst statistical team since the Atlanta Thrashers back in 1999-2000, when the Thrashers were an expansion team. Frei adds that dumping Bednar during what has felt like a “Groundhog Day” season would be unfair and ultimately unlikely since Joe Sakic should also be back. Frei sees Sakic giving Bednar a second season. But Frei stops himself there, noting though every question about Bednar’s job status to Sakic has yielded a response of Bednar’s job security being certain, Frei says that nothing is ever for certain. Reflecting on a long career covering hockey, Frei states that sometimes even the most “sincerely stated plans can go out the window.”
  • Former Stars goaltender Eddie Belfour was candid with the Dallas Morning News’ Mike Heika, saying that he believes it takes a great defense in front of a goaltender to truly create a winning formula. Returning for the Stars-Blackhawks game on Thursday at the United Center, Belfour enjoyed several successful seasons with both teams. Both featured strong defenses and appeared in a Stanley Cup Final and won a Cup respectively. For Belfour, it’s a no brainer: a great goalie is buoyed by a greater defense.

Chicago Blackhawks Sign Tanner Kero To Two-Year Extension

The Chicago Blackhawks have decided Tanner Kero has done enough to stick around, as they have signed him to a two-year extension that will run through 2018-19. The 24-year old was set to become a restricted free agent this summer, and would have been eligible for salary arbitration. The financials of the extension haven’t been released, though Chicago will likely get him at a reasonable price given his production this season. "<strong

A former Michigan Tech Huskies standout, Kero scored 46 points as a senior before signing with the Blackhawks in 2015. Since then he’s made an impact in the AHL level with 64 points in 94 games and established himself enough to earn a full-time role on the NHL team. Usually centering the third line between Ryan Hartman and whoever happens to not be playing with Jonathan Toews at the time, Kero has 12 points in 38 games this season. With over 13 minutes a night he has been a legitimate part of the Blackhawks Western Conference-leading season, if not an offensive force.

There is still upside in Kero, who doesn’t necessarily need to be deployed as a defensive center. His playmaking ability is actually quite good, and will likely reward the Blackhawks with another relatively cheap middle-six option for the next few years. Chicago has been excellent at taking players from the college ranks and using them almost right away to insulate their core forwards, like they have most recently with John Hayden and Nick Schmaltz. While those two were previous draft picks of the team, Kero cost them nothing but money when he graduated from Michigan Tech. He’s an example of one of the only ways to sustain a contending run like the Blackhawks have for the past decade.

The Hawks now have just a handful of restricted free agents to sign this summer, which is a good thing because of their cap situation. After the signing of Kero the team will have between $5-7MM to work with depending on what the final salary cap number is, with a back up goaltender and at least one defenseman still to bring in after the RFAs. They could go to their system and install Jeff Glass and Ville Pokka into the NHL team full-time, but that would seem to be a step backwards on both fronts. Richard Panik remains their most important RFA after finding excellent chemistry with Jonathan Toews this season for a 20-goal campaign. The 25-year old might be the next victim of the Chicago cap crunch, with players like Schmaltz and Hartman looking ready to step into a bigger role.

When the John Hayden finished his season at Yale University, other teams must have hoped that he would wait just a few more months before making a decision on his playing future. The Chicago Blackhawks forward could have become a free agent in August, but according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, never considered anywhere else.

What’s not to like about playing here? There was an opportunity, you know you’re going to have a chance to win, they supported me staying in school. There was no reason to go anywhere else. 

That kind of thinking has paid off for Hayden already, as it didn’t take long for the Blackhawks to insert him into an important position alongside captain Jonathan Toews. Hayden has responded with three points in his first four games, and has shown he can be a physical presence at the highest level. The big forward—who is actually a natural centerman—is turning heads around the league, and is just another example of the exemplary drafting Chicago has shown over the past decade. As they ship players out due to salary limitations, they back-fill with talented youngsters like Hayden, Nick Schmaltz and Ryan Hartman. Each of those three will likely play a key role down the stretch and into the playoffs for the Blackhawks, who once again look like the team to beat in the Western Conference.

  • Friedman also notes that the NHL is looking towards next New Year’s Eve to celebrate the end of the league’s centennial season with some sort of event. While Friedman guesses it could have to do with Montreal, the Canadiens are already confirmed to be the opponents of the Ottawa Senators in their outdoor game on December 16th. While that doesn’t rule them out, it would be odd to see the team involved in events so close together.
  • Josh Healey has been suspended for the third time this season and fifth in his time at Ohio State, but that isn’t scaring off teams around the league. Friedman points out that many teams believe several of the incidents wouldn’t have even been penalized at the professional level, and enjoy his physical play. That said, Healey is apparently down to a short list for where he will sign once his college season eventually ends. He’s been linked to several teams in the past, including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg. Born in Edmonton, he has twice attended their development camps but actually lists St. Louis as his favorite team on his Ohio State bio.

Draft Pick Notes: White, Johansson, Radke, Mattsson

Jeff Cox is reporting that the Ottawa Senators and prospect Colin White will be signing a contract within the next 24 hours, though still there is no indication whether it will be for this year or next. Recently we wrote about the choice the Senators and White have, between adding him for a playoff run and burning a year of his entry-level contract, or signing him to an amateur tryout and letting him get his feet wet in Binghamton before likely making the roster next season.

White has had another solid season at Boston College, and is widely expected to turn pro. The 21st-overall pick in 2015 has shown an ability to play in both ends of the rink, and could legitimately help a team that has had injury troubles over the past month. Since White is already 20 years old, he would not fall under any entry-level slide regardless of how many games he plays. If the contract is signed for this year to allow him to play in the NHL, he would burn a year.

  • Mark Divver of the Providence Journal reports that Emil Johansson could join the Providence Bruins this weekend. Boston’s seventh-round pick in 2014 had a very good season for Djurgardens of the Swedish Hockey League, scoring 17 points in 49 games and generally playing more than 20 minutes a night on the team’s top pairing. If he does come over to North America he’ll be an interesting name for the Bruins to follow, to see if he can develop into a NHL-capable puck moving defenseman.
  • The Stockton Heat—Calgary’s AHL affiliate—have signed Adam Ollas-Mattsson to an ATO, bringing him over from Sweden where he had been playing with Johansson for Djurgardens. Not playing nearly as much, though still suiting up for 52 games, Ollas-Mattsson registered just four points this season. The sixth-round pick of the Flames in 2014, he possesses size and strength capable of playing against grown men and has shown it since he was 17 in the highest Swedish league.
  • Scott Powers of The Athletic reports that Roy Radke has signed an ATO with the Rockford IceHogs after his OHL season finished. The sixth-round pick of the Blackhawks had 36 points in 45 games this season for the Barrie Colts, and will try to prove he deserves an entry-level contract this summer. The 20-year old hasn’t developed into the power forward Chicago had hoped for, though obviously there is still quite a while before you can write him off.

Maple Leafs Notes: Matthews, Playoff Picture, Trades, Marlies

Jonathan Toews was very complimentary of Auston Matthews before their two teams face off this evening.

While Matthews grew up idolizing Toews and models his game after him, the Blackhawks captain drew comparisons between the Maple Leafs rookie and players like Evgeni Malkin and Patrick Kane.

“He’s wasted no time,” Toews said of Matthews. “You kind of wonder, if that’s how he comes out of the gate then what’s he going to be like in a couple of years?”

Matthews has 31 goals and 55 points in 69 games as a rookie, while Toews has 18 goals and 50 points in 61 games. Matthews has now passed Toews’ rookie totals by one point; Toews had 54 points in 64 games back in 2007-08.

  • With the Islanders picking up a point in an overtime loss on Saturday afternoon, they tied the Maple Leafs with 78 points. Toronto remains in the final wildcard spot due to fewer games played. The Maple Leafs are four points behind the Bruins for third in the Atlantic, and one point up on the Lightning in the wildcard race. With the New York Rangers pretty much guaranteed the first wildcard spot, only one of the Leafs, Islanders, and Lightning will be able to snag the other spot. Toronto can do themselves a big favor by beating the Blackhawks tonight.
  • Speaking of Chicago and Toronto, Sportsnet’s Steve Dangle broke down the last six trades made between the two teams. The final list of players acquired isn’t pretty from the Maple Leafs angle. Of the nine pieces acquired by Toronto, only Josh Leivo is still with the team, and he’s a regular in the press box despite having nine points in 12 games. On the other side, the Blackhawks have Artem Anisimov and Richard Panik on their roster, several prospects/ minor-leaguers, and three late draft picks still to come. Dangle points out that Chicago has consistently traded NHLers for cheap depth players over the course of their semi-dynasty, and Toronto has had an excess of those players.
  • It was not a great afternoon for the Toronto Maple Leafs’ farm team. The Marlies were up 4-1 on the Binghamton Senators heading into the third period. The Senators scored seven straight goals to win 8-4. Marlies goaltender Antoine Bibeau allowed seven goals on 33 shots for a 0.787 SV%.

College Notes: Hayden, Doherty, Kelleher

Fresh off inking his entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, former Yale center John Hayden will make his NHL debut tonight when the ’Hawks take on the Ottawa Senators. Hayden, Chicago’s third-round pick in 2013, recorded 21 goals and 13 assists in his 2016-17 senior season. The Blackhawks clearly believe that he is ready to continue scoring, as they’ll throw him into the fire of NHL action less than a week removed from NCAA game play. Regardless of Hayden’s participation level for Chicago down the stretch and in the postseason, playing in just this one game tonight will effectively use up the first of his two-year deal, so the ’Hawks certainly hope that his play will justify their decision.

  • Hayden’s Yale teammate, winger Mike Doherty, has also joined the pro ranks, but not the NHL just yet. Doherty has reportedly agreed to a deal with the AHL’s Providence Bruins. For the Reading, Mass. native, the move gives him the chance to show his ability at the next level for the remainder of this season in hopes of earning a contract with his hometown Boston Bruins as a result. A four-year starter at Yale, Doherty is a two-way forward, capable of contributing modest offense, but in need of further development if he hopes to make it to the NHL one day. He’ll get the chance to continue that growing process in Providence, where Boston youngsters Frank Vatrano, Austin Czarnik, Peter Cehlarik, and more recently found their way.
  • Another New England collegiate prospect is soon to be on his way to the big leagues as well. University of New Hampshire speedster Tyler Kelleher is expected to sign with the New Jersey Devils, who have long been rumored to be the leading suitor for his services. Prior to the 2016-17 season, Kelleher was not on many NHL radars, as his size – just 5’6″, 161 lbs. – limited his potential. However, after scoring 63 points in 40 games this year, his explosive offense is now overshadowing his miniature stature. If the Devils can find a way to work Kelleher into their lineup without his size becoming a liability, they could be the beneficiaries of one of the best offensive skill sets in all of college hockey.

Artem Anisimov Out Three To Four Weeks

The Chicago Blackhawks will be without a key piece for the next month, as Artem Anisimov has been ruled out for three to four weeks with a lower body injury. Anisimov suffered the injury when colliding with Alexander Radulov last night in Montreal, in the Hawks’ 4-2 victory over the Canadiens.

Three weeks would bring Anisimov back for the final two regular season games, while a month would keep him out for the remainder of the regular season. Either way, it’s likely he’ll be back in time to participate in at least part of the first round. The Hawks just took over first place in the Central Division, and would currently draw the St. Louis Blues in the playoffs.

Though losing Anisimov hurts—the second line center is having another excellent season skating alongside Patrick Kane, scoring 22 goals and 44 points—the Blackhawks are prepared to give younger players increased responsibility. Nick Schmaltz will move into the second line center role full time, while the recently signed John Hayden will slide in next to Jonathan Toews on the top line. Speaking with Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times, Hayden seemed excited to get started with the club:

To be honest, playing with anyone would be great. The whole locker room is filled with household names.

In the past, the Blackhawks have moved lesser-known players in and out of their top-six to great results. It seems as though anyone who plays with Toews and Kane (not to mention Artemi Panarin and Marian Hossa) can find success, with Schmaltz being the latest example. Anisimov will be given the time to heal properly, and get back to firing on all cylinders for what looks like another deep playoff run.
