Scouting Changes Hope To Bring Success For Buffalo Sabres

August 30, 2017 at 2:34 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Sabres have undergone a lot of changes this offseason, bringing in an entirely new management team. and coaching staff to try and turn the franchise around. As John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports, it didn’t stop there. New GM Jason Botterill has also made sweeping changes to the scouting side, including hiring amateur scouts from the St. Louis Blues, Columbus Blue Jackets and Pittsburgh Penguins.

One of the downfalls of the Sabres in recent times has been their inability to find top-end players in the first few rounds. Going back a few years before they selected Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart second overall in back to back drafts, the Sabres last fifteen first-round picks look like this:

Rasmus Ristolainen
Nikita Zadorov
Mikhail Grigorenko
Zemgus Girgensons
Joel Armia
Mark Pysyk
Zack Kassian
Tyler Myers
Tyler Ennis
Dennis Persson
Marek Zagrapan
Drew Stafford
Thomas Vanek
Keith Ballard
Daniel Paille

There is some real NHL talent there, but outside of Vanek and perhaps Ristolainen not much to help lead a franchise to Stanley Cup contention. The entry draft is always something of a crapshoot, but the combination of missing somewhat on your first-round picks while also getting unlucky in the later rounds has a huge negative impact on your ability to find continued success. Botterill and his team will have to change that, and start supplying Eichel and company with a better supporting cast.

News and notes from around the NHL this evening:

  • New Buffalo Sabres GM Jason Botterill spoke to media following the conclusion of the Sabres’ development camp, and says the team is still looking for UFAs, reports Jourdon LaBarber of NHL.com. Botterill says that the team weighs whether to add a player via free agency, or wait and see if something materializes trade-wise. Botterill’s position represents every GM’s quandary in the off-season as no GM wants to miss out on a trade opportunity after filling a need with a higher-priced UFA. But at the same time, no GM wants to be waiting so long that they paint themselves in a corner and their options dwindle to nothing.
  • Staying with the Sabres, the team’s top priorities right now, according to LaBarber, are signing its RFAs. Robin Lehner remains the team’s most important RFA available, and as of now has an arbitration date for July 27, 2017. Most—if not all—players come to deals before the actual arbitration hearings, so expect both parties to agree to terms before then.
  • The ECHL Florida Everblades extended a roster spot offer to legendary NHL veteran Jaromir Jagr. While this was done mainly for publicity reasons and slightly tongue-in-cheek, the team does offer a variety of enticing benefits for Jagr. The team would allow Jagr to play only Friday and Saturday home games, the #68 jersey, the potential to see an alligator in the pond next to the arena, and a sleeper bus stocked with Diet Coke and muffins.

NHL Snapshots: Jankowski, Chelios, Pastrnak, Dostie, Hintz

July 9, 2017 at 2:25 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Sabres continue to do some management restructuring today, announcing the hiring of Ryan Jankowski to be the new director of amateur scouting. The team is also promoting Scott Crisp to be the assistant director of amateur scouting. Jankowski, who spent the last four years with Hockey Canada and served as the director of amateur of scouting there, now comes to join Jason Botterill and his new staff. He was responsible for selecting and evaluating players for Canada’s national junior team as well as under-18 and under-17 programs. He has also previously worked as a scout for the Montreal Canadiens and an assistant general manager for the New York Islanders, and had a hand in drafting current Sabres’ Kyle Okposo. Crisp, the team’s former head scout, has been scouting for 17 years, including the Calgary Flames and the Anaheim Ducks.

  • About a month ago, PHR reported that Chris Chelios was leaving the Detroit Red Wings organization. The part-time assistant coach was reportedly trying to gain a position with the NHL Players’ Association. However, Chelios might not be as gone as some think. According to NBC Sports’ Cam Tucker, Chelios was recently seen at the Red Wings development camp and is still listed as an assistant coach on the team’s website. HockeyBuzz’s Bob Duff interviewed him and Chelios says he just took a leave of absence to explore a possible job with the NHLPA, but had always intended to return to the Red Wings if that didn’t come through. However, there is no indication that he did or didn’t get a position with the NHLPA yet.
  • WEEI’s Ty Anderson tweets that Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said today the team has made no progress on a new contract for restricted free agent David Pastrnak. The 21-year-old first-round pick in 2014 had a breakout season last year, putting up 34 goals and 70 points. The Bruins tweeted they are negotiating with several teams about trades and haven’t closed the doors on unrestricted free agent Drew Stafford.
  • The Anaheim Ducks signed 2016 fourth-round pick Alex Dostie to a three-year entry-level contract, according to Sportsnet. The 20-year-old center spent the year playing for three teams, including the Gatineau Olympiques and the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL, where he combined to put up 30 goals and 41 assists between the two teams. He also played one playoff game for the AHL’s San Diego Gulls without registering a point.
  • The Dallas Stars tweeted that 2015 second-rounder Roope Hintz will likely come over to the United States to play hockey this season after a breakout year for HIFK Helsinki team in Finland. The 20-year-old scored 19 goals and 11 assists in 44 games last year.

Kane Might Stay In Buffalo For Now

July 9, 2017 at 10:13 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

Just a month ago, rumors were circulating that the Buffalo Sabres new general manager Jason Botterill was considering trading goal-scoring wing Evander Kane, but wouldn’t make a decision until the team hired their new head coach. However, the general belief is held that while the controversial star forward put together a strong season for the Sabres this past year, he may not be in the team’s long-term plans as he has just one year remaining on his contract. However, despite that fact, Kane’s name has barely surfaced in the rumor mill this past month and he remains on the Sabres roster, looking more and more like he will stay there. In fact, TSN’s Darren Dreger recently said on a radio show that he envisions Kane being on the Sabres roster when the season starts.

The Hockey News’ Lyle Richardson writes that is likely the case, but it’s still too early to make that type of prediction. There are several teams that fell short of nabbing a big-name scorer this offseason and Kane’s name could begin to resurface as a possible trade acquisition for one of those franchises. Richardson cites two teams who could be likely possibilities, including the Anaheim Ducks and the San Jose Sharks. However, both have their detractors as well. The Ducks could use Kane and might be a perfect fit, but after the team lost Shea Theodore to the Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft, they might not want to move another defenseman right now. The Sharks, who lost Patrick Marleau last week to Toronto, would be the perfect team to go after Kane, but might not have the defensive assets that Buffalo would be looking for. Other teams in the past have shown interest in Kane, and while a handful of free agent scorers still remain available on the market, those options are dwindling quickly.

However, it’s also quite possible, the team wants to see what exactly it has in the 25-year-old physical wing. The former fourth-overall pick in 2009, Kane has always had a tremendous amount of potential, but has rarely put together that big season. He only has one 30-goal season, back in the 2011-12 season with Winnipeg. However, last year’s 28-goal output was his second best season and it could have been even better, but Kane struggled at the start of the season, not scoring a goal until his 13th game of the year. Throw in several run-ins with the police and other legal troubles, there are a lot of questions surrounding him which might be undercutting his value. Perhaps, keeping him around and making a decision on him nearer to the trade deadline next year would make more sense and could provide a bigger payday than moving him now while many of those questions about him still linger.

Sabres Sign Jacob Josefson

July 1, 2017 at 6:02 pm CDT | by Seth Lawrence Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Sabres have signed 26-year old center and former Devil Jacob Josefson to  a one-year deal, according to TSN’s Ryan Rishaug. The contract is worth $700,000 and is a one-way contract.

Josefson struggled to find his place on a floundering New Jersey Devils squad, only playing for 38 total games and netting only 1 goal to accompany 9 assists. Josefson is a former first round pick from 2009, and has played his entire career in Jersey. His career offensive totals are very unimpressive, but he can provide solid two-way depth to a fourth line. He generally finds himself starting in the defensive zone and until last year had always been a positive Corsi asset.

Buffalo is looking to fill out their lineup with players who are appealing in terms of advanced stats. Josefson is not going to be a negative influence on the ice and comes cheaply. Newly appointed GM Jason Botterill has been quite busy today with sneaky good signings, loading up his AHL affiliate Rochester Americans with  a number of players. Josefson will likely find a home as a 13 or 14th forward and will need to fight yet again for his icetime. Last season, he averaged only 12:15. His versatility will be a plus, as he can shift from center to wing with little difficulty.

Buffalo Sabres Hire Randy Sexton, Steve Greeley As Assistant General Managers

June 26, 2017 at 9:59 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Sabres have found some help for Jason Botterill, hiring Randy Sexton and Steve Greeley as assistant general managers. Sexton will also serve as the new GM of the Rochester Americans. Mark Jakubowski will move up to Vice President of Hockey Administration.

Sexton was brought over by Botterill from the Pittsburgh Penguins where he had worked as the director of amateur scouting, a role which he will likely oversee in Buffalo as well. His time in Pittsburgh was seen as a huge positive as he continually unearthed overlooked prospects. That scouting background is still most remembered though for selecting Alexandre Daigle first overall as GM of the young Ottawa Senators franchise. While that was clearly a mistake, Sexton has a long history of success with scouting and developing young players.

Greeley had previously been with the New York Rangers as assistant director of player personnel, after spending some time behind the bench as an associate coach for Boston University. Another front office addition with a scouting background, Greeley has been involved in professional and amateur scouting for more than a decade. Just 36, this is a big step for him into the front office of a young team.

Eastern Notes: Sexton, Brassard, Mason

June 24, 2017 at 7:12 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 1 Comment

Now that the NHL draft is over, Pittsburgh will be losing another executive as TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that Randy Sexton, the Penguins director of amateur scouting, will be heading to Buffalo to join new general manager Jason Botterill and will take the Sabres’ assistant general manager position. Sexton will also take over as the general manager of their AHL team, the Rochester Americans.

Many believe that Sexton has been on Botterill’s list since he took over as general manager of the Buffalo Sabres back in May. Sexton has had a hand in drafting a number of key players to Pittsburgh’s recent two-time Stanley Cup champion team including Matt Murray, Bryan Rust, Olli Maatta and Jake Guentzel. The Sabres have made a total overhaul of their front office since the season ended with another disappointing season as the team hired Botterill to make organizational changes. The team has not reached the playoffs since the 2010-11 season.

  • Ottawa Senators Derick Brassard is progressing nicely after offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum to his right shoulder and should be ready at the beginning of the season, according to the Ottawa Citizen’s Bruce Garrioch. The scribe says that head coach Guy Boucher says if Brassard is not ready to go in October, the team will find a replacement from within, rather than going out and signing an extra center. Despite playing in 81 games, the 29-year-old center had a down year despite the team’s success, scoring just 14 goals and 25 assists, his lowest numbers since the 2012-13 season.
  • While most teams have solved their goaltending issues already before the offseason has officially gotten underway, Philadelphia Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said the team is considering re-signing Steve Mason to share the net with the team’s only netminder in Michal Neuvirth. According to CSN Philly’s Tim Panaccio, Hextall claims he’s in no hurry, nor is worried since most teams have already found their goalies for the year. That leaves him with numerous options, but was quick to point out that Mason, “is still in the mix.” Mason, who just finished his fifth season with the Flyers, is an unrestricted free agent, but after a season in which he finished with a 2.66 GAA in 58 games, the 29-year-old may not have many options left to find a starting job in the NHL.

Pittsburgh Penguins Name Bill Guerin AHL General Manager

June 15, 2017 at 11:16 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Pittsburgh Penguins have filled the role vacated by Jason Botterill when he was hired as the new General Manager of the Buffalo Sabres. Assistant GM Bill Guerin will take over as GM of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, taking the next step in his path to running an NHL team. The team has also promoted Jason Karmanos to Assistant GM, and Mark Recchi to the Director of Player Development. Bill Guerin

Guerin is on a similar path to the one Chris Drury is following in New York, who was also named GM of the AHL team earlier this spring. After being hired as a player development coach after retiring in 2011, Guerin was promoted to AGM three seasons ago and has from all accounts been very successful in the position. He’ll now have the task of running a team himself, a stepping stone for nearly all NHL GMs around the league. The WBS Penguins have enjoyed a lot of success under Botterill’s watch, and have won at least 40 games in 12 straight seasons. Their run of fifteen straight playoff appearances without a Calder Cup championship is something Guerin will be tasked with changing, while continuing to develop players for the Pittsburgh roster.

The 46-year old Guerin played 1,263 games in the NHL, scoring 856 points as one of his eras most consistent power forwards. He raised the Stanley Cup twice during his playing days, early with New Jersey and near the end of his career with Pittsburgh in 2009. He’s also obviously been part of the team that has now won back to back Cups, reported to have been a big part of recruiting college players into the system.

Guerin himself went through the NCAA route before it was the development path it is today, spending two years with Boston College after being drafted fifth-overall. While NCAA players pepper the Pittsburgh lineup, they’re also still coming as the team signed the highly sought-after Zach Aston-Reese as a free agent this spring, only to see him score eight points in ten games for the WBS Penguins down the stretch. College players will undoubtedly be a big part of what Guerin does with the WBS roster, though Aston-Reese may compete for an NHL job in the fall.

Free Agent Focus: Buffalo Sabres

June 11, 2017 at 7:48 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

The free agent period is now less than one month away from opening up and there are several prominent players set to hit the open market while many teams have key restricted free agents to re-sign.  Here is a breakdown of Buffalo’s free agent situation.

Key Restricted Free Agents:

F Marcus Foligno – At just 25 years old, Foligno will enter his seventh season with the Sabres organization in 2017-18. While his development has been slow, it’s also been steady, finishing each passing season with more points than the year before. Foligno isn’t the player who showed flashes of as a rookie in 2011-12, scoring 13 points in 14 games, but he’s carved out an important role in Buffalo as a reliable top-nine winger. 2016-17 marked a career-high 13 goals for Foligno, helped along by a team-best 13.4% shooting percentage, as well as his first 80+ game season. As always though, Foligno’s true value comes in his physical two-way game, where he had a career-best and team-leading 279 hits, career-high 57 blocked shots, which led all Buffalo forwards, and was a vital member of the penalty kill. Las year, the Sabres signed Foligno to just a one-year, $2.25MM contract, but after again proving his worth as a defensive forward and top-nine contributor, new Buffalo GM Jason Botterill should have no problem giving the homegrown product a multi-year deal worth $2.5-$3MM annually. Even with fellow priority RFA’s Zemgus Girgensons and Johan Larsson in need of raises, the Sabres have plenty of cap space and will give Foligno what he’s worth.

G Robin Lehner –  The Sabres have no interest in letting Lehner go, but this off-season they need to either commit to the 25-year-old as their surefire starter or establish that they feel he is just a timeshare goalie at this point. Just two years ago, Buffalo traded a first-round pick to acquire Lehner from the Ottawa Senators. In his first year with the Sabres, he was excellent, posting a .924 save percentage and 2.47 GAA… but in only 21 games. Injuries limited Lehner to only a brief showing in 2015-16, but this past season he was able to see action in 59 games and again played well with a .920 save percentage and 2.68 GAA. With Chad Johnson gone, many expected that Lehner would play more this past season though. However, trade acquisition Anders Nilsson routinely outplayed Lehner all season long. The margin between the two wasn’t wide, but enough so that Nilsson managed to make 26 appearances, including 23 starts. The team has nonetheless stated that Lehner is their guy, but actions speak louder than words. The value and more so the term of Lehner’s contract this summer, as well as their negotiations with Nilsson, will speak volumes about their commitment to their supposed #1.

Other RFAs: F Zemgus Girgensons, F Johan Larsson, F Justin Kea, F Jean Dupuy, F Evan Rodrigues, D Brady Austin, G Linus Ullmark

Key Unrestricted Free Agents:

F Brian Gionta – The Buffalo captain may be 38 years old and have over 1000 NHL games under his belt, but he also just completed a full 82-game season and seventh on the team in scoring. At this point in his career, Gionta is not looking to re-locate and perhaps no team could use his veteran leadership and hockey intelligence more than the Sabres, who have few forwards over 30 and certain players in need of mentoring (i.e. Evander Kane). The Sabres have plenty of cap space to play with and are expected to fill holes throughout the roster via free agency, but they’ll have room to bring back their captain who is still capable of scoring 30-40 points and can play in all situations. He probably won’t get another three-year, $12.75MM contract, but if Gionta wants to be back, he will be.

G Anders Nilsson – The flip side of the situation with Lehner is that of Nilsson. Just a little over a year older than Lehner, Nilsson was finally given legitimate responsibility for the first time in his NHL career in 2016-17 and he flourished. His .923 save percentage and .267 GAA were just marginally better than Lehner, but a major step up from his previous performances. Perhaps the Sabres, who truly do need to commit to Lehner or not, are afraid that re-signing Nilsson would send the wrong message, but he has definitely earned that consideration. If the Sabres don’t bring back Nilsson, they’ll have to search for a veteran backup to the oft-injured Lehner anyway. It’s not a simple problem and how Boterill solves it will impact his start with the organization.

Other UFAs: D Cody Franson, D Dmitry Kulikov, D Taylor Fedun, D Erik Burgdoerfer, D Mat Bodie, F Derek Grant, F Cole Schneider, F Cal O’Reilly

Projected Cap Space: The Sabres currently have only $50.2MM committed to 2017-18 contracts by way of 11 forwards and five defensemen. (CapFriendly) The extensions for RFA’s Lehner, Foligno, Girgensons, and Larsson, all of whom will be safe from expansion, as well as roster hopefuls Alexander Nylander and Brady Austin will eat up some of that space. However, even if the cap ceiling remains at $73MM, Buffalo has nearly $23MM of space to work with and if Matt Moulson is an expansion casualty, as has been rumored, there’s another $5MM in relief. That should give them more than enough space to accommodate those young players, re-sign Gionta, extend or replace Nilsson, and still have the flexibility to explore the free agent market for better fits on the blue line than Franson or Kulikov and a game-changer up front.

Atlantic Notes: Moulson, Moore, Buffalo Coaching Search

June 10, 2017 at 11:30 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While many teams are hoping to strike an agreement with Vegas to get them to take a bad contract off their hands, John Vogl of the Buffalo News highlights a unique situation when it comes to the Sabres.  Winger Matt Moulson, who has two years left on his contract with a $5MM cap hit, is someone the team would like to get off their payroll and Golden Knights GM George McPhee has a close relationship with Moulson’s family as he happens to be the godfather to his wife.  Accordingly, Vogl speculates if there could be a fit between the two teams in a trade.

McPhee has already stated that he expects to take on some onerous contracts in exchange for other assets.  Buffalo is already armed with a fair amount of cap space this summer as they have a little more than $50MM in committed payroll so it’s safe to wonder if other teams may be more desperate to unload an underachieving contract than they are.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic:

  • Pending unrestricted free agent center Dominic Moore is hopeful to re-sign in Boston this offseason, he told Sportsnet’s Luke Fox. He adds that he expects contract talks to begin in the next couple of weeks.  The 36 year old had a good first season in a bottom six role with the Bruins, chipping in 25 points (11-14-25) in 81 games while once again being well above average at the faceoff dot, coming in with a success rate of 54.6%.  He earned $1MM after bonuses this past season and should land a contract around that mark on the open market this summer.
  • With the Panthers closing in on an agreement with Bob Boughner to be their new head coach, that leaves the Sabres as the lone team looking for a new bench boss. TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports (Twitter link) that they will wait until after the Stanley Cup Final to interview Nashville assistant coach Phil Housley.  Penguins assistant Rick Tocchet has also been expected to interview for the position while McKenzie adds that Jacques Martin, also an assistant with Pittsburgh, may also sit down with GM Jason Botterill.  The new general manager would certainly be familiar with the two Pittsburgh coaches having been hired away from the Penguins himself last month.  Botterill is on record saying he’d like to have a new coach in place for the NHL Entry Draft which starts on June 23rd.
