Darren Archibald Signs In Austria

January 4, 2021 at 1:44 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The North American portion of Darren Archibald’s professional hockey career is over, at least for now. After spending last season with the Toronto Marlies and Belleville Senators of the AHL, Archibald has taken his talents to Europe and signed with the Vienna Capitals of the Austrian ICEHL.

Now 30, Archibald is an excellent example of how dedication and work ethic can eventually result in success. Undrafted, he spent his first two professional seasons bouncing between the AHL and ECHL, spending just as much time with the Kalamazoo Wings as the Chicago Wolves. After his entry-level deal expired without any time at the NHL, Archibald inked another one-year deal with the Canucks and worked hard to earn a shot. That chance came in October of 2013 when he made his NHL debut at the age of 23. A few days later, Archibald would record his first NHL point against his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs.

Though his career has still mostly been spent at the AHL level, Archibald scored 14 points in 55 career NHL games, all of them coming with the Canucks. He’ll now take a journey familiar to undrafted players and suit up overseas for the next chapter of his hockey career.

Snapshots: Laine, Dubois, Barzal, Kunin

January 4, 2021 at 12:37 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

Training camp is underway all across the league and with it comes vast speculation on the future of discontented young stars. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reached out to several front office executives for their take on the Pierre-Luc Dubois and Patrik Laine situations, which are seemingly destined for trades at some point down the line. Both Dubois and Laine have expressed a desire for a “change of scenery,” though both are under contract and reported to Columbus Blue Jackets and Winnipeg Jets camps respectively.

That speculation seems to all lead to one point, and that is the team trading the best player in a deal is usually the one that loses. Columbus and Winnipeg will both have an extremely tough time winning any trade that includes Dubois or Laine (although, swapping them directly has also been mentioned).

  • At least Dubois and Laine have contracts, which can’t be said about Mathew Barzal as New York Islanders camp opened today. Barzal was on the team’s training camp roster but not on the ice, and Arthur Staple of The Athletic updates the situation with his report that talks continue between the two sides. Head coach Barry Trotz spun the news in a different direction, noting that while Barzal is out there is an opportunity for other players to impress.
  • Barzal has a spot locked up whenever he returns, but an absence may not be so beneficial to Luke Kunin, who is still without a contract with his new team, the Nashville Predators. Kunin will not report to Predators camp without one, according to Adam Vingan of The Athletic, though the team remains hopeful a deal will be made soon. The 23-year-old forward arrived in a trade from the Minnesota Wild earlier this offseason after finally establishing himself as a full-time NHL player last year, scoring 31 points in 63 games.

Florida Panthers Place Ethan Prow On Waivers

January 4, 2021 at 11:00 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

Jan 4: Prow has cleared waivers.

Jan 3: Only one player was placed on waivers on Sunday, with Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reporting that the Florida Panthers have put Ethan Prow on waivers.

With a shortened training camp, expect the waiver wire to be quite active in the next week. Prow will be one of many to be placed on waivers as teams begin to sort out their rosters over camp. The 28-year-old has never made an appearance in the NHL, but has proven to be a solid presence on an AHL blueline.

The undrafted free-agent originally signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins back in 2016 after four years at St. Cloud State University, playing three years with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins team in the AHL. He posted impressive numbers in his third year (2018-19) in which he scored 18 goals and 50 points in 74 games. He then opted to sign with Florida for a chance to break into the NHL, scoring nine goals and 32 points in 42 games last season, but did not join the Panthers in the bubble.

The blueliner will hope to find his way on the team’s taxi squad or more likely leading the way for their AHL squad.

Dmytro Timashov Joins Islanders Camp

January 4, 2021 at 9:53 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The New York Islanders, notorious for failing to announce contract details, had another surprise as the on-ice portion of training camp opened today. According to Andrew Gross of Newsday, recently acquired restricted free agent Dmytro Timashov joined his new teammates. That means Timashov has signed a contract of some sort, whether it be a new NHL deal or perhaps a professional tryout.

The 24-year-old forward was acquired from the Detroit Red Wings last month, brought to New York for nothing more than future considerations. In 44 career NHL games, he has just nine points but does have a certain familiarity with GM Lou Lamoriello from their time together in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.

Timashov’s contract should be officially announced at some point, along with Mathew Barzal who was also listed on the Islanders’ training camp roster (but has not appeared on the ice yet). Notably, that roster also included Tom Kuhnhackl who had not yet been announced as a re-sign, but could also be participating on a professional tryout.

As always, Lamoriello’s group is the most secretive in the NHL. For now, Timashov at least is taking part.

Blackhawks Re-Sign Dylan Strome

January 3, 2021 at 5:29 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 4 Comments

With the start of on-ice workouts at training camp beginning on Monday, the Blackhawks now have their full team under contract.  The team announced that they’ve re-signed center Dylan Strome to a two-year, $6MM contract.  GM Stan Bowman released the following statement about the deal:

We believe Dylan is ready to take the next step in his career and build off the strides he has made in his first two years in Chicago.  He has great offensive instincts and brings creativity and skill to our team. We are thrilled he is now signed and able to join us tomorrow for the start of training camp.

The 23-year-old indeed finds himself in a situation to take the next step forward.  With Jonathan Toews (illness) out indefinitely and Kirby Dach (wrist) out four-to-five months following a fractured wrist sustained in a preliminary game at the World Juniors, Strome is basically a near-lock to begin in Chicago’s top-six forward group, if not their top line.  That should have him in line for a sizable jump in playing time from the 15:56 per game he had last season.

While he’s coming off of a quieter year, Strome has certainly shown flashes of offensive upside with the Blackhawks.  Following his acquisition from Arizona in November of 2018, he had 17 goals and 34 assists in just 58 games, a level of production that would certainly warrant a spot inside the top six.  Things didn’t go as well last season though as he managed just 12 goals and 26 assists in 58 games before the pandemic hit while chipping in with two goals and an assist in nine postseason contests.  Nevertheless, he was still able to more than triple the AAV from his previous contract despite not having salary arbitration eligibility.

CapFriendly reports that the deal will pay him $2.4MM this season and $3.6MM next season.  That means that his qualifying offer alone will guarantee a raise on his next contract in 2022 as it will check in at $3.6MM; in this case, both elements of the qualifying offer calculation (the preceding season salary or 120% of the AAV) come up to the same number.

Although the rash of injuries (which includes Alexander Nylander) has certainly eliminated some optimism heading into the upcoming season, there will still be a lot at stake for Strome.  The third-overall pick in 2015 now has the opportunity to establish himself as a core piece for the Blackhawks and if that happens, they’ll get good bang for their buck on this contract.  Chicago now finds themselves with around $1.3MM in cap room as things stand, an amount that could be boosted if they opt to place Dach and Nylander on LTIR to start the season.

Salary Cap Deep Dive: Nashville Predators

January 3, 2021 at 3:58 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

Navigating the salary cap is one of the more important tasks for any GM.  Teams that can avert total cap chaos by walking the tightrope of inking players to deals that match their value (or compensate for future value without breaking the bank) remain successful.  Those that don’t see struggles and front office changes.

PHR will look at every NHL team and give a thorough look at their cap situation heading into the 2020-21 season.  This will focus more on players who are regulars on the roster versus those who may find themselves shuttling between the AHL and NHL.  All cap figures are courtesy of CapFriendly.

Nashville Predators

Current Cap Hit: $74,057,810 (under the $81.5MM Upper Limit)

Entry-Level Contracts

D Dante Fabbro (one year, $925K)
F Eeli Tolvanen (one year, $894K)

Potential Bonuses
Tolvanen: $2.85MM
Fabbro: $850K

Tolvanen has received quite a bit of press over the past two years after posted 19 goals and 36 points in the KHL as an 18-year-old. However, now 21, Tolvanen might be ready for the NHL despite struggling since coming over to North America. The 2017 first-round pick struggled in his first year in the AHL, but looked better in his second year there. However, he was on loan with his old KHL team so far this season and hasn’t been as dominant as that 18-year-old season. So, the question is, will he be ready to take the next step into the NHL lineup? That’s a legitimate possibility or he could find himself on the taxi squad, easing into the league.

Fabbro was also highly-touted coming into last season after spending three years at Boston University. While he held onto the team’s fourth defenseman, he still issues acclimating himself to the NHL. The blueliner scored just five goals and 11 points in 64 games, while averaging 19:01 of ice time. He should continue to improve as the team’s fourth defenseman this year.

One Year Remaining, Non-Entry-Level

G Pekka Rinne ($5MM, UFA)
G Juuse Saros ($1.5MM, RFA)
F Mikael Granlund ($3.75MM, UFA)
F Erik Haula ($1.75MM, UFA)
F Brad Richardson ($1MM, UFA)
D Jarred Tinordi ($700K, UFA)

While the team is quite balanced in terms of contracts, it does have to figure out its goaltending situation next season. Rinne, who has been the team’s star netminder for years, will be 39 years old at the start of the 2021-22 season and could be done. His 2019-20 season wasn’t particularly impressive with a .895 save percentage in 36 games. Saros does look ready to take the No. 1 spot. The 25-year-old was much more impressive with a .914 save percentage in 40 appearances and should continue to take the bulk of the starts this coming season. Saros should get quite the pay raise for next year, while Rinne’s status is a question mark. Is he ready to retire or could he bounce back and hold on for a few more years?

With forward depth being a big need this season, the Predators brought back Granlund despite his struggles since being acquired from Minnesota at the trade deadline in 2019. He didn’t fare well in his short tenure with the team after the trade and while posting 17 goals last year, Granlund wasn’t the dominant forward that the team thought they traded for when they sent young Kevin Fiala off. With Fiala having an impressive season in Minnesota last year, the team has to hope they can get Granlund back to his 20-goal scoring ways. The team also brought in Haula to help out as a middle-six center. The injury-prone forward had one dominant season in Vegas, but since then is now on his third team, hoping to find his game.

Two Years Remaining

F Filip Forsberg ($6MM, UFA)
D Mattias Ekholm ($3.75MM, UFA)
F Rocco Grimaldi ($2MM, UFA)
F Calle Jarnkrok ($2MM, UFA)
D Mark Borowiecki ($2MM, UFA)
F Nick Cousins ($1.5MM, UFA)
F Matt Benning ($1MM, UFA)
F Yakov Trenin ($750K, RFA)

Many people believe that when Forsberg signed his six-year, $36MM contract back in 2016, that they had a superstar winger on their hands. He was coming off his first 30-goal season, scoring 33 goals and then followed that up with 31 goals the next year. However, those numbers have declined steadily the last few years although minor injuries have been part of that decline. Forsberg scored just 21 goals last season in 63 games and needs to find his game over the next two years if he wants to re-establish himself as one of the top wingers in the game, which at the moment, he isn’t.

Ekholm, on the other hand, continues to be one of the best deals for the next two years. The blueliner averaged more than 23 minutes of ATOI for the fourth straight years and has been a solid impact player for the team, even if his plus/minus dropped into the negative for the first time in years. He could be in line for a big extension similar to what Ellis received recently.

Jarnkrok continues to put up decent middle-six numbers after scoring 15 goals last season. He has two years left on the six-year, $12MM pact he signed in 2016. The Predators have quite a few depth players on two-year deals as well, including Grimaldi, Trenin and newly signed Cousins as well as defensemen Borowiecki and Benning. The hope is this depth should help solidify the team’s bottom-six, which struggled last season.

Three Years Remaining

Four Or More Years Remaining

D Roman Josi ($9.06MM through 2027-28)
F Ryan Johansen ($8MM through 2024-25)
F Matt Duchene ($8MM through 2025-26)
D Ryan Ellis ($6.25MM through 2026-27)
F Viktor Arvidsson ($4.25MM through 2023-24)
F Colton Sissons ($2.86MM through 2025-26)

The Predators have a number of players locked up for quite a while. Perhaps the contract that stands out the most is Josi. The blueliner won the Norris Trophy last year, vindicating the contract he signed after he posted 16 goals and a team-leading 65 points last season. While it’s never good for a defenseman to lead the team in scoring, Josi proved to dominate and gives the Predators a solid base (along with Ellis) for the next few years. Ellis, who in the second year of an eight-year, $50MM contract, also put up solid numbers last year.

The real question comes down to Nashville’s top two centers. Johansen and Duchene each make $8MM per season and are locked up long-term, but neither had the season the team wanted last year. After posting 14 goals and 64 points last season, Johansen saw quite a decline in his play. While he still managed to scored 14 goals, his assist numbers dropped as he managed just 22 assists, his worst performance since 2012-13. Duchene wasn’t much better after signing a long-term deal last offseason. After scoring 31 goals and 60 points between Ottawa and Columbus in 2018-19, Duchene put up just 13 goals and 42 points in his first year in Nashville. Both players will need bounce-back seasons or those contracts will begin to look disastrous.

The problem with Nashville is their once-vaunted first line really struggled last year, including Johansen, Forsberg and Arvidsson. The 27-year-old Arvidsson also couldn’t put up good numbers last year. Despite scoring 94 goals in his three previous years in Nashville, Arvidsson scored just 15 goals with 28 total points — numbers he needs to improve on.

Buyouts

F Kyle Turris ($2MM through 2027-28)
D Steven Santini ($42K in 2020-21; $275K in 2021-22)

Retained Salary Transactions

None

Still To Sign

F Luke Kunin (RFA)

The team acquired Kunin in the offseason for veteran center Nick Bonino. The 23-year-old has struggled with injuries in the past, but did manage to appear in 63 games last year and showed promise in Minnesota, scoring 15 goals and 31 points and looks like he could take those numbers to another level, especially if he can get top-six minutes in Nashville, which looks possible, if Nashville can get him signed.

Best Value: Arvidsson
Worst Value: Johansen

Looking Ahead

It wasn’t that long ago that the Nashville Predators were considered one of the top teams in the league with a solid young core and two years later, the team seems to have lost that outlook. The team has underperformed the last couple of years. The team hopes that they have added the much-needed depth on both the bottom-six and the defense to keep the team near the top of the standings. While the contracts are relatively well balanced, there are very few contracts that will be coming off the books in the coming years as players like Forsberg, Saros and Ekholm will likely need new contracts that could create some issues down the road.

Snapshots: Stuetzle, Thornton, Duclair, Spurgeon

January 3, 2021 at 3:04 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 4 Comments

The Ottawa Senators have already been in camp for several days already, but the team will get another big name player into camp soon as 2020 first-round pick Tim Stuetzle arrived in Ottawa Saturday night. The 18-year-old is coming off an impressive performance at the World Junior Championship after he led Team Germany to one of the countries best finishes ever. After a seven-day quarantine, he will join his team and is likely to start his NHL career, according to the Ottawa Citizen’s Bruce Garrioch.

“I hope I’m going to play in the NHL this season, that’s 100% my goal and I will work very hard for that,” Stuetzle told reporters in Edmonton following Germany’s elimination in the quarterfinals.

Stuetzle finished the World Juniors with five goals and 10 points in five games. The third-overall pick, who signed his entry-level deal last week, is likely going to play wing for the Senators this season.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe surprised a few at his opening press conference today when he announced that 41-year-old Joe Thornton will play with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on a line entering camp, according to The Athletic’s James Mirtle. That’s a bit higher than many thought he would play on after a seven-goal season with the San Jose Sharks last year. Keefe added that Jimmy Vesey will play alongside John Tavares and William Nylander, while Ilya Mikheyev, Alexander Kerfoot and Zach Hyman will play on the third line and Wayne Simmonds, Jason Spezza and Alexander Barabanov will man the fourth line.
  • Speaking of lines, Florida Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville said today that newly signed forward Anthony Duclair is expected to start training camp on the team’s No. 1 line next to Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau, according to FloridaHockeyNow’s George Richards. Duclair had trouble finding a new team after an impressive season with the Ottawa Senators when he tallied 23 goals and 40 points in 66 games. With the losses of Evgenii Dadonov and Mike Hoffman off their top-six, Duclair was brought in to take a big role with the Panthers this season.
  • The Minnesota Wild haven’t had to make a change in their captaincy since 2009, but after allowing Mikko Koivu to leave via free agency during the offseason, a new captain was needed. Despite bigger names on the roster such as Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, the Minnesota Wild announced that Jared Spurgeon will be the new captain of the team, according to Sarah McLellan of the StarTribune. Spurgeon, who signed a seven-year, $53MM contract extension in September of 2019, has been a team leader for years and has been with the team for 10 years already. The 31-year-old paired with Suter as the two of them posted a plus-13 at 5-on-5 together, making them one of the top No. 1 pairings in the league.

Taylor Leier, Jack Rodewald Sign In Czech Republic

January 3, 2021 at 2:21 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

A pair of former NHL players have decided to take their services overseas as NHL.com’ Brennan Klak reports that former Philadelphia Flyers forward Taylor Leier and former Ottawa Senators forward Jack Rodewald have signed with HC Ocelari Trinec of the Czech Republic.

Neither player saw NHL action last season. Leier hasn’t made an NHL appearance since the 2017-18 season when he played in 39 games for the Flyers. He scored one goal and tallied five points that year, but spent 2018-19 with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL and then was swapped to Buffalo at midseason for Justin Bailey. The 26-year-old never played for the Sabres, however, spending the next year and half with the Rochester Americans. He appeared in just 27 games for the Americans last season, posting 11 goals and 17 points.

The 26-year-old Rodewald played with the Senators more recently, getting into six games in 2018-19, but has only appeared in 10 total NHL games. He signed with Ottawa in 2017 and showed well in his stints with the Belleville Senators of the AHL, scoring 23 goals in 2018-19, prompting his call-up to Ottawa. However, the Senators decided to trade Rodewald to Florida last season for collegiate forward Chris Wilkie. However, Rodewald struggled with the Panthers’ AHL affiliate, posting just five goals in 43 games.

Vancouver Canucks Intend To Extend Travis Green

January 3, 2021 at 1:40 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 1 Comment

While no contract has been signed yet, Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning told Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre that the team is working to extend head coach Travis Green to a new contract, keeping him in the fold.

“Travis has done an excellent job coaching this group of players. I think, from a development standpoint, our young players have continued to get better under him every year. We think he’s the right fit for this group and our group moving forward,” Benning said during a press conference Sunday as the Canucks opened training camp. “We want to kind of take a look at the financial landscape of the whole business here as we keep moving forward, but our intention is to sign Travis to an extension so he’s part of our group here moving forward.”

Green, whose contract expires at the end of the 2020-21 season, has been quite successful since being hired in 2017. He has posted a 102-103-28 record, which may not be the most impressive record over three seasons. However, the team has made significant progress each season, placing seventh in 2017-18, fifth in 2018-19 and then in third place in the Pacific Division last year, including a deep run into the playoffs, almost ousting the Vegas Golden Knights in the process.

Benning does have other significant negotiations to work out as well, including new deals for soon-to-be restricted free agents Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes as well as goalie Thatcher Demko.

East Notes: Barzal, Cizikas, Olofsson, Peterka

January 3, 2021 at 1:25 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 1 Comment

With the opening of training camp, New York Islander players have undergone off-ice testing today. However, one notable missing player today is unsigned restricted free agent Mathew Barzal, who now is considered to officially be a holdout, according to The Athletic’s Arthur Staple.

Head coach Barry Trotz confirmed that Barzal is not in camp, although he said Barzal is on Long Island. He said he will make due without Barzal for now. The team currently only has $3.9MM in cap room, but once the team is able to put defenseman Johnny Boychuk on LTIR due to a career-ending eye injury, that should open up some extra cap space to sign the first-line center.

“You have to make sure you’re adaptable,” Trotz said. “We’re going to worry about who we can put on the ice.”

  • Sticking with the Islanders, Staple reports that forward Casey Cizikas is in camp and ready to go. The 29-year-old forward was forced to leave the bubble during the playoffs after suffering an eye injury. Cizikas told Staple that he took a hit to the head during the playoffs and the vision in his left eye went blurry. After leaving the bubble, the key fourth-line forward was diagnosed with a detached retina. “I feel comfortable and confident on the ice now, so that’s the most important thing,” said Cizikas.
  • When Taylor Hall signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Sabres, the former Hart Trophy winner was penciled in next two Jack Eichel and winger Victor Olofsson. Unfortunately, the first few days of camp haven’t given him much playing time with those linemates as Eichel has been out with an upper-body injury and has been day-to-day with the start of camp. Now, Olofsson is also listed as day-to-day. The forward left practice Saturday after crashing hard into the goal post while doing a one-on-one drill with Rasmus Dahlin at full speed, according to The Athletic’s Jon Vogl. He was favoring his left arm. However, head coach Ralph Kruger said Sunday that he expects Eichel, Olofsson and goaltender Linus Ullmark to return by Wednesday, according to the Buffalo News’ Lance Lysowski, although that likely means they will miss Monday’s scrimmage.
  • Despite an impressive showing for Team Germany at the World Juniors last week, Buffalo Sabres prospect John-Jason Peterka will not be attending Buffalo’s training camp. The 18-year-old is expected to return to Germany and play for EHC Munchen in the DEL where he has been playing since last season. The team’s second-round pick (34th overall) scored seven goals amongst men in 42 games there last season and should take a much bigger role with his team this year. Vogl adds that Krueger knows Peterka’s coach in the DEL and believes he will develop him well.
