Minnesota Wild Acquire Ian Cole

The Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche have swapped a pair of veteran defensemen. The Wild have acquired Ian Cole in exchange for Greg Pateryn, with CapFriendly also reporting that the Avalanche have retained $800K of Cole’s cap hit.

Cole, 31, carries a $4.25MM cap hit in the final season of a three-year, $12.75MM contract he signed with Colorado in 2018. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year and had recently seen his role on the Avalanche greatly reduced. Though he has experience on both sides of the ice, the left-handed defenseman was made somewhat redundant now after the team acquired Devon Toews from the New York Islanders in the offseason. Add in the smooth development of top prospect Bowen Byram who is pushing for a full-time role on the NHL roster, and you can see why the Avalanche had floated Cole’s name in recent weeks.

In Pateryn, 30, the Avalanche bring in a right-handed option that could be a better fit for the team in a depth role. Though he made his debut in 2012-13, Pateryn has still played just 270 games in the NHL and has never averaged more than 20 minutes a night. His cap hit is also quite a bit lower than Cole’s at just $2.25MM this season, though the retention does reduce the savings. In Colorado, it’s hard to see Pateryn even getting much more opportunity than the 12:36 he averaged through Minnesota’s first three games.

For the Wild though, upgrading from Pateryn to Cole could be a real difference-maker. Minnesota’s top four defensemen have all averaged more than 23 minutes a night through the early part of the season, with very little trust being placed in Pateryn and Carson Soucy. The two-time Stanley Cup winner Cole can take some of the pressure off those stars, while perhaps rejuvenating his own career. It was just last season that Cole recorded 26 points in 65 games for the Avalanche, nothing to sneeze at for a player without any powerplay time. His all-around ability will be a nice addition in Minnesota for a team racing for a playoff spot.

That new opportunity may also be exactly what Cole was looking for with free agency looming. Even though the Colorado prospect pipeline had pushed him down the depth chart, he seems likely to enter the offseason as a sought-after target at age-32. Adding to the 89 career playoff games he has suited up for would only improve his stock. That is of course if Wild GM Bill Guerin even lets him go that far; the two have a history from their days together in Pittsburgh and the Minnesota executive has shown a willingness to spend heavily on his defense.

Perhaps the biggest winner here though is Byram, who likely will be given a chance to jump into Colorado’s lineup on at least a part-time basis. The fourth-overall pick in 2019, the 19-year-old looked dominant during the World Junior Championship a few weeks ago and should quickly make the transition to the NHL. Though returning to junior would still technically be an option if and when the WHL starts up, there seems little more that Byram can learn from his time there after scoring 149 points in his last 139 games for the Vancouver Giants.

COVID Protocol Related Absences: 01/19/21

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 protocol. Though a few of the west coast teams are still TBA, here is today’s list:

As a reminder, inclusion on this list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

The big news for today is the four new Carolina Hurricanes players, which have been confirmed as positive test results by several reporters including Frank Seravalli of TSN. The Hurricanes will not play today’s scheduled game, but it is not immediately clear how long these players will be out. Staal was already on the list and has missed the last two games.

Among the players that were removed today are Markus Nutivaara and Jordie Benn.

As has been the case so far this season, the league declined to identify anyone from Dallas and will hold off on doing so until they are able to play in their first game, now scheduled for January 22. They had a significant outbreak early in camp as 17 of the 27 players that tested positive in training camp were from the Stars.

Minor Transactions: 01/19/21

The NHL season is underway and at the top level teams are keeping busy merely by swapping players between the active roster and taxi squad. However, with AHL training camps starting up, there has also been a flurry of activity from the lower levels. There also continue to be players making the move overseas, by both signing and loan. Keep up with all of the action right here:

  • Joel Lowry, older brother of Winnipeg Jets forward Adam Lowry, has decided to take his talents overseas. The 29-year-old winger has signed with the Iserlohn Roosters of the DEL after spending the last several seasons in the AHL. Last year, he scored eight goals and 27 points for the Springfield Thunderbirds but was not re-signed by the Florida Panthers and became an unrestricted free agent.
  • An ex-Jets prospect is also on the move, as Michael Spacek terminated his contract with Tappara of the Finnish Liiga. The 23-year-old Spacek had 13 points in 18 games with the team this season but is heading back to the Czech Republic. A fourth-round pick of the Jets in 2015, he became an unrestricted free agent when the team decided not to issue him a qualifying offer this offseason. Last year, he had nine goals and 20 points in 45 games for the Manitoba Moose.
  • Pavel Dorofeyev, who was selected in the third round by the Vegas Golden Knights in 2019, has terminated his contract with Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL. Though nothing has been officially announced, Dorofeyev is expected to sign with the Golden Knights and continue his playing career in North America. The 20-year-old winger had 17 points in 36 games while playing for Chelyabinsk’s VHL (minor league) team this season.
  • Calgary Flames prospect Ryan Francis has been traded in the QMJHL. A 2020 fifth-round pick, who many foresaw going earlier in the draft, Francis has been dealt by the Cape Breton Eagles to the Saint John Sea Dogs, the team announced. The return for Francis and a 2021 sixth-round pick is fellow forward Dawson Stairs, a 2023 first- and second-round pick, and a 2022 sixth-round pick. Francis was a top-five scorer for the Eagles last season and early on this year and should be a major difference-maker for the Sea Dogs when the league returns to action.

Snapshots: Hurricanes, Babcock, Avalanche

Not only have the Carolina Hurricanes had three forwards test positive for COVID-19 today, but Sara Civian of The Athletic also confirms that the reason Jordan Staal was placed on the COVID Protocol Related Absences list was because of a positive test result last week. Staal, who played the Red Wings the night before his positive result, has missed the last two games and is still in Detroit according to Civian. The three new players are likely to isolate in Nashville, while the rest of the team—those who have tested negative—fly back to Raleigh.

Though the Dallas Stars have still not begun their season thanks to an outbreak in training camp, this is the first incident of games being postponed day-of. It almost certainly won’t be the last.

  • Mike Babcock has broken his media silence, as he prepares to work with the NBC broadcast team this weekend. In an exclusive interview with Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Babcock talks about the much-publicized incidents with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner and Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen. The veteran coach also explains that it is very unlikely that he would be back in the NHL this season and notes that it is “someone else’s turn” behind the bench for Canada at the Olympics, scheduled for next year in Beijing.
  • If you noticed some late-night roster movement by the Colorado Avalanche and wondered why they would need a goalie on an emergency recall, it was answered today when the team announced that Pavel Francouz is out with a lower-body injury. He’s joined on the sideline by Andre Burakovsky who is dealing with an upper-body ailment, with both players listed as day-to-day. The Avalanche will go with seven defensemen tonight and Hunter Miska will serve as the backup to Philipp Grubauer in net.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 01/19/21

It appears as though there will be daily movement this season between the active roster and taxi squad. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of shuffle news each day.

  • The Florida Panthers have activated Sergei Bobrovsky from his non-roster designation and will start him in net against the Chicago Blackhawks this evening. With that in mind, Sam Montembeault has been moved to the taxi squad. Montembeault is still waiver-exempt for the time being, meaning Chris Driedger will serve as the primary backup this season after getting the opening night start on Sunday and stopping 25 of 27 shots.
  • The Montreal Canadiens continue a rotation to the taxi squad in order to bank cap space, this time moving Jesperi Kotkaniemi there on an off-day. As Arpon Basu of The Athletic relays from the front office, the team will be putting Kotkaniemi, Jake Evans, Alexander Romanov, and Nick Suzuki on the taxi squad throughout the year, trying to make it as fair as possible for all the waiver-exempt players. Kotkaniemi will be available for their next game.
  • The Edmonton Oilers have assigned Ryan McLeod to the AHL, removing him from the taxi squad for the time being. The 21-year-old forward has yet to play in the NHL, but did score 11 points in 15 games during a short stint in Switzerland earlier this season.
  • Lias Andersson is set to make his debut for the Los Angeles Kings. The team announced that Andersson has been activated from the taxi squad and is expected to be in the lineup on Tuesday. In his place, Boko Imama has been reassigned to the taxi squad.

Montreal Canadiens Announce New ECHL Affiliate

The Montreal Canadiens have come to an agreement with the new ECHL expansion franchise in Trois-Rivières, signing a three-year affiliation that starts in the 2021-22 season. Canadiens VP of Hockey Operations John Sedgwick released a statement on the deal:

This agreement provides our organization with an interesting opportunity to expand our development pipeline here in Quebec, while allowing us to closely monitor the development of some of our prospects. The ECHL is a league that deserves more recognition for the talent it displays and for its high quality of play. The decision to move our AHL affiliate team to Laval proved to be very successful, and the advantage of having another affiliate nearby in Trois-Rivières will be very convenient for our hockey operations and to continue scouting local talent.

The new franchise in Trois-Rivières was officially announced last week along with another ECHL expansion team in Coralville, Iowa. Both teams will join the league next season. This affiliation, along with the Laval Rocket of the AHL, allows the Canadiens to keep all three tiers of their organization in Quebec, giving them not only quick player transfer but an easier way to optimize prospect development and evaluation.

Though only officially announced, this ECHL team has been in the works for a while and will be led by GM Marc-Andre Bergeron, former NHL defenseman who spent one season with the Canadiens during 2009-10.

Calgary Flames Sign Michael Stone, Place On Waivers

Jan 19: Stone has cleared waivers and can be assigned to the taxi squad for Calgary.

Jan 18: The Calgary Flames have finalized a contract for Michael Stone, as the veteran defenseman has been placed on waivers today. Stone had been in camp with the Flames on a professional tryout, but like Brett Ritchie has now signed a one-year, two-way contract for this season. The deal will carry an NHL salary of $700K.

Stone’s tenure with the Flames is an interesting one, if only because it continues. He arrived in a trade from the Arizona Coyotes in 2017, a year removed from his outstanding, career-season of 36 points in 2015-16. That offense never materialized in Calgary, but the team still decided to sign him to a three-year, $10.5MM contract in June of 2017. While he played the entire 2017-18 season, injuries and inconsistencies plagued him thereafter, resulting in a 2019 buyout of the final year of his contract.

Just a month later though, Stone would be back with Calgary on a one-year deal worth the league minimum of $700K. Once again he struggled to find much consistency, scoring seven points in 33 games last season. Now, after a PTO, he’s back on another one-year deal with the team that bought him out less than two years ago. Should he clear waivers, he will likely be assigned to the taxi squad as additional depth.

The 30-year-old has played in nearly 500 games at the NHL level, quite the luxury to have sitting around in case of injury.

Morning Notes: Penguins, Stützle, Fines

The Pittsburgh Penguins will finally have Kasperi Kapanen in the lineup when they battle an old foe this evening, taking on the Washington Capitals for the second time in three nights. Kapanen has missed training camp and the first few games because of the COVID protocols, but his debut with Pittsburgh should be a welcome one given they are 1-2 through the early part of the season, having dropped two games already to the Philadelphia Flyers.

After winning their first game on Sunday with Casey DeSmith in net, he’ll be back in again over Tristan Jarry this evening. Though DeSmith didn’t post incredible numbers himself, Jarry looked lost at times during the first two games and currently carries a brutal .727 save percentage and 7.57 goals-against average. The Penguins certainly aren’t giving up on their young starter, but DeSmith offers a reliable option that they can go to frequently until Jarry gets his game in order.

  • The Ottawa Senators will be without top prospect Tim Stützle when the team welcomes in the Winnipeg Jets this evening, as he is dealing with a minor injury. The 19-year-old forward is listed as day-to-day and will be replaced by Alex Galchenyuk in the lineup. Stützle has been as advertised so far in the early season, scoring a highlight-reel goal for his first NHL tally and generally being one of the more dangerous offensive players in the lineup.
  • While the NHL decided against any suspensions from last night’s action, the Department of Player Safety did issue three fines. Nicolas Aube-Kubel has been fined $4,633.62 for roughing Rasmus Dahlin, Elias Pettersson has been fined $3,987.07 for his slash on Sean Monahan and Greg Pateryn has been fined $5,000 for his cross-check on Sonny Milano. All three fines are the maximum amount allowed under the CBA and are based on salary.

Carolina-Nashville Game Postponed

The Dallas Stars are still waiting to start their season thanks to a COVID-19 outbreak in training camp and now another game will be postponed thanks to the protocols. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports that the Carolina-Nashville game scheduled for this evening will be postponed because of a coronavirus situation with the Hurricanes. The league has released a short statement explaining the decision:

The National Hockey League today announced that Game #52, Carolina Hurricanes at Nashville Predators, scheduled for tonight, has been postponed. The rescheduled date of Game #52 will be announced when available.

The decision was made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the health and safety of players, coaches and game day personnel and in consultation with medical experts.

Jordan Staal has been on the COVID Protocol Related Absences list for the last two games, though it’s not clear if that is related to this latest situation. Sara Civian of The Athletic tweets that Hurricanes GM Don Waddell told her three players have tested positive for COVID-19, but that one is a false positive.

Important to note that the Florida Panthers, who already had two games postponed at the beginning of the season thanks to the Stars outbreak, were supposed to visit Carolina to take on the Hurricanes twice starting Thursday. It’s not clear if those games are in danger at this point. The Tampa Bay Lightning, the other team affected by the Stars situation, were supposed to be in Carolina next Tuesday for the first of two games.

The Hurricanes played last night against the Predators in Nashville.

Vegas Still Struggling With Salary Cap Balance

Ahead of their game on Monday night, the Vegas Golden Knights swapped out a pair of young players from their active roster. After starting only five defensemen to begin the season, the team has recalled Nic Hague to serve as their sixth defenseman. In a corresponding move, Cody Glass has been assigned to the taxi squad. For the time being, it’s a move that the Golden Knights have to make.

Although Vegas would like to have both young standouts in the lineup, they do not have the cap space to fit both. Even with both on entry-level contracts, the Knights’ $294K in cap space (even with the more affordable Hague on the roster) is not enough for an additional player. Vegas is stuck with the minimum roster of 20 players. That 20-man group cannot include both Hague and Glass, either. They are the only members of the Knights that are waivers-exempt, meaning opening up space for both would require subjecting another player to the waiver wire. The deep, veteran roster of the Golden Knights does not offer many safe waiver options and those that might clear, such as Keegan Kolesar or Zach Whitecloud, make even less than Glass or Hague would still put the team in a difficult salary cap spot.

Barring an injury and LTIR placement to open up space, the Knights will either need to continue this careful balancing act or make a move. While Glass and Hague are both ready for full-time NHL roles, the Knights could decide that keeping their roster together this season is more important than the development of either prospect in a shortened season. However, if they feel that their best chance at a Stanley Cup is to ice a lineup with both Glass and Hague during the regular season, something has to give.
