Linus Ullmark Out 3-4 Weeks With Lower-Body Injury

The Buffalo Sabres are on the outside of the playoff picture and dealing with the fallout from a 5-2 loss from last night’s game against the Ottawa Senators. During the game, Linus Ullmark left the Buffalo net with an apparent non-contact injury, leaving Carter Hutton to finish out the contest. Today, the Sabres have announced that Ullmark will miss approximately three to four weeks with that lower-body injury. That news actually may come with a few sighs of relief, given how disastrous the injury looked last night. Jonas Johansson has been recalled from the Rochester Americans.

Without Ullmark, who has taken over the starting role in Buffalo, the Sabres are facing a tough climb the rest of the way. The team now sits 22-21-7 on the year and ten points out of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. There are also two other teams between them and the eighth-place Carolina Hurricanes, while two more are right on their heels.

For GM Jason Botterill, who said just yesterday that his team was still looking to add to their forward group, Ullmark’s injury could complicate the matter. Throwing away points like last night against a weak Ottawa team is going to make a playoff climb impossible, and he may be better selling off some of his expiring assets instead of pushing for the postseason.

It will be interesting to see if the team gives Johansson a chance, given his success in the minor leagues. The 24-year old has a .925 save percentage for the Americans this year, going 13-3-3 in 20 appearances. The third-round pick has not yet seen any NHL action, but with Hutton’s struggles this season it might be time to give him a chance.

Ivan Morozov Signs KHL Extension

The Vegas Golden Knights are going to have to wait a little longer to get a look at Ivan Morozov, as the young forward has signed a two-year extension in the KHL. Morozov is now under contract through the 2021-22 season, meaning he won’t be coming over to North America anytime soon.

Selected 61st overall by the Golden Knights in 2018, Morozov has broken through recently into the KHL, scoring six points in his last three games. Those were his first points at the highest level in Russia, after playing sparingly over the last two seasons. A veteran for his country at international tournaments, Morozov was part of the bronze medal-winning World Junior squad in 2019, and the silver medal-winning group just a few weeks ago. He has also been a dynamic scoring threat in the lower Russian leagues, leading to high expectations in North America.

Because the NHL and KHL do not have a formal transfer agreement, the Golden Knights will retain Morozov’s draft rights indefinitely. That means they can try again down the road to bring him into their organization, though nothing guarantees he’ll ever want to come over. For now, the 19-year old will continue his development with one of the most successful organizations in the KHL, SKA St. Petersburg.

College Hockey Round-Up: 01/28/20

The NHL Trade Deadline doesn’t directly impact the college ranks, but there are usually one or two NCAA players whose rights are moved before the end of February. The Hockey News’ Steven Ellis recently wrote about the “under-the-radar” college players who enjoying breakout seasons, but at this time of year the article may as well be titled “Trade Bait”. The leading name, of course, is Hobey Baker hopeful Jack Dugan (VGK) of No. 9 Providence. Dugan leads the NCAA in points – total and per game – and assists, as he has all year, and looks like a steal as fifth-round pick. However, could the Vegas Golden Knights instead opt to sell high on the upstart prospect? The team desperately needs to improve on the blue line and dangling Dugan could help to land them a top-four defenseman.

A number of the others named by Ellis who could also be trade fodder over the next few weeks, including Dugan’s Providence teammate, defenseman Michael Callahan (ARI). The Arizona Coyotes are all in this season after trading for Taylor Hall and Callahan is an expendable piece given the team’s depth in young blue liners. If senior forward David Cotton (CAR) of No. 5 Boston College does not plan to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes, the team could try to use him as piece to make a deal. The same goes for goalie Tyler Wall (NYR) of No. 14 UMass Lowell, as the New York Rangers have a logjam in goal and seem like a poor fit for one of the best keepers in college hockey. Could the Boston Bruins be convinced to part ways with Maine goalie Jeremy Swayman (BOS), another of the NCAA’s elite, if it helps them make a needed deadline deal? Finally, circling back to the Golden Knights, if Vegas deems Dugan to be untouchable, they have another rising star in Bowling Green forward Brandon Kruse (VGK) who they could offer up instead. The next few weeks could change the career path of these players and many more in the collegiate ranks, but they can at least take comfort in knowing that they’ll be closing out this season with their college team regardless.

Recent Results

It has been a tough couple of weeks for just about every team at the top of the national rankings. Over the past two weeks – four games for most teams – only two teams among the top 15 came away with more than two wins, No. 3 Minnesota State and No. 12 Arizona State, and even those teams suffered a loss to go with their three wins. No. 1 Cornell stays atop the charts despite a mediocre 2-0-2 stretch, while No. 2 North Dakota stays put as well, despite a tie to unranked Miami and a loss to No. 10 Minnesota Duluth. The defending champs were happy to get the win after being swept by unranked St. Cloud State the weekend prior. Rounding out the top five are still No. 4 Denver and No. 5 Boston College, despite both struggling through weekend series with unranked teams: two ties for Denver against Nebraska-Omaha and two losses for BC versus Maine.

Hockey East could not be much tighter right with Maine and UConn tied for eighth in the conference, but trailing top seed No. 7 UMass by just six points with a game in hand. Wedged in between are Boston College, No. 14 UMass Lowell (one win in last four games), No. 9 Providence College, Boston University, No. 13 Northeastern, and New Hampshire, who has been red-hot with wins over Northeastern, Providence, and UMass in recent weeks and is on the verge of cracking the national rankings. There’s no telling how Hockey East will shake out, but it’s making for a great conference tournament.

The same can’t be said for the Big Ten, which continues to disappoint this year. No. 8 Penn State and No. 11 Ohio State continue to be ranked among the best in the NCAA, but do they belong? Both teams won just one of their four games over the past two weeks, with each losing at least one game to an unranked opponent. As for their conference competition, preseason darlings Wisconsin and Notre Dame have disappeared from the national rankings and only No. 17 Michigan State is left. Compared not only to Hockey East, but the NCHC, ECAC, and even the WCHA, the Big Ten is looking weak in 2019-20.

Marc Michaelis Sidelined

The formula for No. 3 Minnesota State has been pretty straightforward for the past few year: dominate the WCHA, stay healthy, and try your luck as a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Mavericks are well on their way to such a result again this season, but have been dealt a blow in the health department. Senior forward Marc Michaelis suffered a leg injury back on January 17 after a collision with a Bowling Green opponent. Michaelis left the game and did not return and did not play the second game on Saturday, nor the team’s most recent weekend series versus No. 19 Bemidji State, which featured a rare loss. So far, there has been no time line given for his return to action. Even though Minnesota State is a defense-first team centered around goalie Dryden McKay and defenseman Connor Mackey, Michaelis’ absence is a major loss. Michaelis, 24, is the team’s captain and leading scorer and the German forward is an all-situations player for Mankato. If the team hopes to avoid another early exit from the NCAA tournament, they will need a healthy Michaelis.

Luke Reid Commits To UNH

Not only has the University of New Hampshire been making big moves in the standings of late, they have been doing so in the recruiting game as well. UNH landed a major commitment this past weekend in USHL defenseman Luke Reid. Reid, an Illinois native playing for the Chicago Steel, has nevertheless decided to take his talents to Durham, New Hampshire. The right-shot defenseman plays a balanced game and has been a nice piece on a strong Chicago team. However, he is much more than just a complimentary player. Reid is ranked No. 77 by Future Considerations in their 2020 NHL Draft rankings and is considered by many to be a mid-round pick. While UNH has housed many NHL prospects over the years, including current defensive ace Max Gildon (FLA), top recruits have been less frequent in recent years for the Wildcats and Reid will be a welcome addition to the program.

Trade Rumors: Jets, Dillon, Pageau

As Tessa Bonhomme pointed out on Tuesday night’s “Insider Trading” segment on TSN, the Winnipeg Jets are in the unenviable position of needing help at center and on defense, often hard positions to replace in-season. Injuries down the middle have caused center to become an issue for the Jets, but few will be surprised to hear that Darren Dreger says that addressing the blue line remains Winnipeg’s priority ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline. Defense was an obvious weak point for Winnipeg from day one of the 2019-20 season, following the departures of Jacob Trouba, Tyler Myers, and Ben Chiarot this off-season and the unexpected absence of Dustin Byfuglien as well. While Josh Morrissey and Neal Pionk have played well this season, the rest of the D corps remains underwhelming and ill-equipped to handle the pressures of the postseason. Dreger confirms that the Jets are specifically looking for a top-four defenseman, as they need more than just depth additions to fix the blue line. He says that the team will consider both rentals and term players when evaluating trade options but will have to keep in mind the team’s salary cap situation, both this year and moving forward.

  • One player being targeted by the Jets as a possible stopgap to their defensive woes is San Jose Sharks rearguard Brenden Dillon, according to Pierre LeBrun. Dillon has been one of the most talked about trade candidates in recent weeks, as the Sharks are eager to sell, but short on impending free agents, making the big defenseman a near certainty to move. LeBrun believes that at least six NHL teams are firmly in on Dillon, which is a number likely to increase as the trade deadline grows closer. LeBrun speculates that the asking price for Dillon, who is strictly a stay-at-home, shutdown defender, could rise to a second-round pick and prospect. Other than Winnipeg, two other teams that LeBrun named as suitors are the Boston Bruins, who are looking to add physicality and grit to their lineup, and the Carolina Hurricanes, who lost Dougie Hamilton to injury but have the cap space to replace him regardless of their blue line depth.
  • Another player sure to have a number of suitors is Ottawa Senators center Jean-Gabriel Pageau. The Senators will try to re-sign him, but Pageau is enjoying a breakout year and the market for centremen is very thin. LeBrun states that Pageau is the top pivot available and Ottawa could command a first-round pick. Whether they opt to re-sign him or not could depend on how far the bidding war reaches for his services. LeBrun does note that a number of teams with obvious needs down the middle are also not locks for the postseason, which could influence Pageau’s price and possibly convince the Senators to pull him off the market. The teams specifically named by LeBrun include the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, and Philadelphia Flyers. Of course, the Jets could also be contenders if they decide to load up.

KHL’s Artyom Zub Drawing NHL Interest

The hot free agent target from the KHL this season? It turns out that it’s a defenseman for a change. On TSN’s “Insider Trading” segment, Darren Dreger states that there at least three NHL teams with interest in SKA St. Petersburg standout Artyom Zub. One of those clubs is confirmed to be the Ottawa Senators, with GM Pierre Dorion currently over in Russia meeting with the intriguing blue liner. All indications point to Zub signing in the NHL after this season.

Zub, 24, is a comparable player to current Senator Nikita Zaitsev, says Dreger. The young defenseman is a right shot and plays a strong defensive game, rather than opting for offensive flash like many of his KHL counterparts. However, Zub may be taking a step toward rounding out his game, as he has already far surpassed his career high in points with 19 and counting this season. A fixture on the international stage for Russia and one of the more dominant defensive players in the KHL, Zub is already very accomplished for his age, and has the mature game to match.

Zub’s consistent defensive play has likely had him on NHL radars for some time, but his offensive outbreak comes at the right time, as his current contract with SKA comes to an end. Dreger reports that the defender will not make a decision, at least publicly, on his future until after the KHL season, as he remains focused on St. Petersburg’s division-leading record and Gagarin Cup hopes. However, when the time does come, Dreger says that Zub is already in the final stages of making the call on his next team and he could make his NHL destination known almost immediately after his season ends.

Golden Knights Hire Steve Spott As Assistant Coach

Tuesday: The Golden Knights have made the hiring official, announcing that Spott has joined DeBoer’s staff. The team’s release acknowledges the important role that Spott played in DeBoer’s successful tenure with the rival San Jose Sharks and they can only hope that the duo find more success in Las Vegas.

Saturday: When the Vegas Golden Knights shook up their coaching staff earlier this month, they let both head coach Gerard Gallant and assistant coach Mike Kelly go.  At the time, they only replaced Gallant with new bench boss Peter DeBoer.  It appears that Vegas has filled their other vacancy as Ken Boehlke of SinBin.Vegas reports that veteran assistant Steve Spott will join the team following the bye week.

Spott is no stranger to working with DeBoer as he was with him in San Jose before they shook up their coaching staff last month.  On top of that, the two worked together from 2002-2008 with the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL; when DeBoer left to begin his NHL coaching career, Spott took over as the head coach of the Rangers.

Before joining San Jose in 2015, Spott spent two seasons with Toronto – one as the head coach of the AHL Marlies and one as an assistant with the Maple Leafs.  He has experience coaching both forwards and defense from his time with the Sharks and that type of coaching versatility is something that is certainly desirable and likely had a role in him only being out of a job for roughly six weeks.

Snapshots: Anderson, Blais, Lafreniere

Despite the fact that the Columbus Blue Jackets have carried through an incredibly discouraging summer and are currently sitting in a playoff position in the Eastern Conference, they are still facing a decision on what to do with one of their core players. Josh Anderson, who scored 27 goals for the Blue Jackets last season and looked like he would be one of the faces of the franchise after Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovksy left in free agency, now be on the move himself. Aaron Portzline of The Athletic (subscription required) reports that the “feeling around the NHL” is that Anderson will be moved either by this season’s deadline or more likely in the summer as he becomes a restricted free agent for the final time.

Portzline examines the entire situation revolving around Anderson, including the potential ways his future could unfold. The 25-year old will be an RFA with arbitration rights in the offseason and could potentially take the Blue Jackets (or any acquiring team) to arbitration in order to walk right into unrestricted free agent status in 2021. Dealing with injuries all year, Anderson has just one goal and four points in 26 games with the Blue Jackets and hasn’t played since the middle of December.

  • Another physical forward dealing with injuries this season has been Sammy Blais, but he’ll have his return tonight for the St. Louis Blues. The 23-year old Blais has been activated from injured reserve after missing the last 28 games for the Blues. In 20 games this season he has five goals and eight points, both career-highs for the young forward.
  • If you’ve been counting the points Alexis Lafreniere has scored on a nightly basis, take a break. TSN reports that the prospective first-overall pick in this year’s draft has been suspended for the next three games in the QMJHL for a headshot, meaning he’ll have to sit at 84 points on the season for a while. Lafreniere leads all QMJHL players in scoring despite taking off part of the season to play in the World Juniors, but this is not the first time he has received supplementary discipline from the league. While his physicality is part of the appeal, he’ll need to avoid these kinds of hits if he wants to keep a clean record when he makes it to the NHL.

Trade Deadline Primer: Buffalo Sabres

With the trade deadline now less than a month away, we will be taking a closer look at the situation for each team over the coming weeks.  Where do they stand, what do they need to do, and what assets do they have to fill those needs?  Next up is a look at the Buffalo Sabres.

After another incredible start, the Sabres have struggled to score goals and are slipping further and further away from an Atlantic Division playoff spot. They’ve already completed one deal to bring in some help at forward by acquiring Michael Frolik, but may well need another boost if they want to compete in the postseason tournament.

Trade Chips

The Sabres have a glut of NHL defensemen on the roster even after selling off Marco Scandella for a fourth-round pick and would like to move out some of that surplus to add more speed and offense up front. The problem is that many of the options on the blue line don’t come with a ton of trade value, unless you’re looking at one of the team’s young core pieces.

Zach Bogosian has already requested a trade when he was healthy scratched by head coach Ralph Krueger, but with his $5.14MM cap hit it is hard to see him actually bringing back anything for the Sabres. Colin Miller and Jake McCabe each hold a little more value than that, but Rasmus Ristolainen likely remains the biggest piece the team could potentially move.

Ristolainen has many detractors, but is still logging close to 23 minutes for the Sabres and has 23 points in 49 games. The 25-year old is also carrying a positive +/- rating for the first time in his career, and is a right-handed option that teams may see as an upgrade in the top four. Unfortunately, he comes with a $5.4MM cap hit and two more years on his contract, making him a tough player to add midseason.

Beyond the defensive group, the Sabres also received a trade request from Evan Rodrigues and they do have plenty of other expiring forward contracts that could be moved. It seems unlikely that the team would give up someone like Casey Mittelstadt even though he has struggled at the NHL level.

The team has its first-round pick for this year and next, but with the playoffs a clear uncertainty any deal would likely have to have lottery protection in it.

Five Players To Watch For: D Zach Bogosian, D Jake McCabe, D Colin Miller, D Rasmus Ristolainen, F Evan Rodrigues

Team Needs

1) Scoring Punch: The team will get Jeff Skinner back in the lineup tonight for the first time since December, but if he can’t reach the same level that he showed last season the Sabres will desperately need to add some finish before the deadline. Skinner has just 11 goals in 39 games after scoring 40 last season. Victor Olofsson, the team’s goal-scoring rookie, is still a few weeks away from a return. Players like Marcus Johansson, Jimmy Vesey, Conor Sheary and Kyle Okposo just aren’t putting the puck in the net enough at this point for the team to reliably create an offensive push behind Jack Eichel.

2) Speed Up Front: GM Jason Botterill was very clear when he spoke with reporters on Tuesday; he needs to find some help at forward. Botterill explained that he needed not just offensive scoring touch, but an upgrade to the overall speed at forward. A name like Chris Kreider obviously brings that kind of impact, but it’s not clear if Botterill wants to head down the rental road.

Snapshots: Vegas, Expansion, Russia

At yesterday’s press conference, AHL president David Andrews suggested that the Vegas Golden Knights may soon be interested in purchasing a minor league franchise. That idea is more than just a suggestion, as Jesse Granger of The Athletic (subscription required) reports the Golden Knights are working to bring a team in as soon as October. The AHL club would be called the Henderson Silver Knights if all goes according to plan.

While this is obviously not a done deal at this point, more and more teams have begun to bring their AHL affiliates as geographically close as possible. Having a team in the same city (or very close, should the team eventually move to Henderson) allows for numerous benefits, including easier game-day call-ups. The Chicago Wolves, currently affiliated with the Golden Knights, would not be the franchise to move and issued a statement yesterday explaining that they would find a new NHL partner.

  • Speaking of new franchises, The Athletic’s Eric Duhatschek published the outlet’s first take on a Seattle expansion roster based on the current situation. The group is headlined by several exciting forwards and has plenty of Stanley Cup experience in net. Obviously things are going to change considerably before the 2021 draft, but it’s time to start thinking about expansion circumstances when evaluating every move around the league.
  • Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet gave some clarification on Twitter about a potential NHL visit to Russia in the coming years, explaining that it will not happen next season but there is still interest for the 2021-22 campaign. Friedman suggests that the St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals would be potential teams to take part in the showcase, both obvious choices given their respective Russian stars.

Minor Transactions: 01/28/20

Just two games are on the NHL schedule tonight, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be worth watching. The late game involves the St. Louis Blues in the second half of a western Canada back-to-back after losing to the Vancouver Canucks in regulation last night. This time they’ll take on the Calgary Flames in a game that suddenly seems extremely important for the reigning Stanley Cup champions. The Blues have lost their last three and will need to get back on track before losing their lead on the Colorado Avalanche in the Central Division. As they and the rest of the league prepare, we’ll keep track of all the minor moves:

  • Jansen Harkins is fresh off an appearance at the AHL All-Star Game and now is back with the Winnipeg Jets. The team recalled the 22-year old forward and sent Cameron Schilling back to the Manitoba Moose. Harkins has exploded offensively this year for the Moose, scoring 31 points in 30 games–the same total he had in 70 appearances last season.
