Detroit Red Wings Sign Valtteri Filppula

The Detroit Red Wings have brought back a familiar face, signing Valtteri Filppula to a two-year contract. New GM Steve Yzerman also has a history with the veteran forward from their days with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Filppula played in Detroit for the first eight years of his career. MLive’s Ansar Khan reports the deal is for $3MM per season.

Filppula may be 35, but he continues to put up solid numbers as a bottom-six defenseman and played a major part of the New York Islanders turnaround last season. For a Barry Trotz team that focused more on defense this year, Filppula posted impressive numbers, scoring 17 goals, his most since the 2013-14 season and finished with 31 points.

With Detroit, Filppula gets a slight raise as he made $2.75MM last season. He will try and find a role somewhere on the third or fourth line and adds to a group of veterans that now have slipped to the bottom-six, including Frans Nielsen, Justin Abdelkader and Luke Glendening. He also could have been brought in to prevent too many young players being vaulted into roles they aren’t ready for as the team now has a number of prospects who are close to being NHL ready, including Filip Zadina and Joe Veleno.

Sabres Sign Andrew Hammond

“The Hamburglar” is making his next appearance in Buffalo. The Sabres have announced a one-year contract with Andrew Hammond worth the NHL minimum $700K. The veteran goalie should slot in as the team’s No. 3 keeper next season.

Buffalo had hoped that this was the year that stud goaltending prospect Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen might take over full-time duties in Rochester, but the prospect underwent hip surgery in April which could miss a large chunk of the season and therefore would be better off as a backup option once he returns. Hence the addition of Hammond. The 31-year-old known for impressive streaks, including an incredible run while he was with the Ottawa Senators in the 2014-15 season in which he posted a 1.79 GAA and a .941 save percentage in 24 games for them. Unfortunately for Hammond, he also had just as many streaks where he was unsuccessful, making for a very streaky goaltender.

He has played just 56 total NHL games over his career and spent last season as the third-string option for the Minnesota Wild, but was not able to beat out backup Alex Stalock and served as the starting netminder with the Iowa Wild in the AHL. He played 33 games for Iowa, putting up a 2.81 GAA and a .910 save percentage, but never played a game for Minnesota.

While Buffalo’s goaltending situation looks solid in Carter Hutton and Linus Ullmark, neither goalie posted great numbers and if one of them falters, the team might feel comfortable calling up Hammond.

Ryan Carpenter Signs With Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks have added a depth forward, signing Ryan Carpenter to a three-year deal. The contract carries just a $1MM average annual value, giving the team an inexpensive center to plug into the bottom-six.

Carpenter signed with the San Jose Sharks after three years at Bowling Green State University and had trouble cracking the San Jose Sharks’ lineup, playing just 27 NHL games for them over three seasons before the Sharks opted to place him on waivers. He was claimed back in 2017 by the Vegas Golden Knights in their inaugural season and his physicality and offensive ability earned him a spot on the team’s bottom six as he scored nine goals in 36 games and returned for a full season last year. Carpenter played in a career-high 68 games, but found himself often scratched late in the season as Vegas was rotating him and a number of other forwards in and out of their third line, including Brandon Pirri, Tomas Nosek and Valentin Zykov, although Carpenter also was able to fill in on the team’s fourth line as well. With the addition of Nikita Gusev, Carpenter was expendable.

In Chicago, the 28-year-old should find a more permanent home on the Blackhawks’ fourth line. The team just added forward Andrew Shaw, who will likely center that line. Carpenter should add that combination of physical play with some offensive ability. Regardless, he’ll have to hold off a number of players who will be looking for playing time, including John Quenneville, Dylan Sikura, Dominik Kubalik, Anton Wedin.

Tim Heed Re-Signs With San Jose Sharks

As expected, the departures of Justin Braun and Joakim Ryan from San Jose have allowed for Tim Heed to return to the team. The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz reports that the Sharks have signed Heed to a one-year contract worth $960K. The righty defenseman should compete for a starting role moving forward.

Like many of their depth players, Heed was signed out of Sweden back in 2016 and showed off some offensive ability in his first year with the San Jose Barracuda in the AHL, where he 14 goals and 56 points in the 2016-17 season. The hope is that in a full-time role, Heed might be able to take his NHL game to a new level.

The 28-year-old has spent the last two years as the team’s seventh defenseman. He played 29 games in the 2017-18 season, followed by 37 games this season as he was one of the bigger beneficiaries in the second-half of the season when Erik Karlsson had his injury issues, even making three starts in the playoffs. However, with Braun and Ryan no longer in the picture, Heed becomes one of the obvious candidates to move into a full-time role, although it’s still likely that San Jose will go out and add some depth options to challenge Heed.

Garnet Hathaway Signs With Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals have signed another depth forward to a multi-year deal, inking Garnet Hathaway to a four-year $6MM deal according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.

It took quite a while for Hathaway to become an NHL regular after four years at Brown University. They 27-year-old finally become an NHL regular in the 2017-18 season, but took his game to another level this season, posting a career-high 11 goals and 19 points, while providing the necessary grit and grind while playing on Calgary’s fourth line. He also finished with a career-high 200 hits last season.

It’s that energy and physicality that prompted the Capitals to add the forward to their team. Washington had already agreed to a deal with Richard Panik to fill the third-line role that was vacated when they traded winger Andre Burakovsky to Colorado a couple of days ago. Now Hathaway should fill a need on their fourth line as he likely will supplant either Travis Boyd or Chandler Stephenson there. The bump up in pay shouldn’t hurt either as he made just $850K last season with the Flames.

Wild Expected To Sign Mats Zuccarello And Ryan Hartman

Monday: The Wild have officially announced the Zuccarello deal as a five-year, $30MM pact, as expected. Zuccarello was one of the earliest prominent free agents to commit to his new team, as he never appeared to waver on Minnesota’s offer.

The terms on Hartman’s deal come in almost exactly as Russo speculated. Colleague Pierre LeBrun reported it is a two-year deal worth $1.9MM, which the Wild have confirmed. Hartman ends up signing well above what it would have cost the Dallas Stars to keep him with a qualifying offer, though possibly less than they may have expected from an arbitration award.

Sunday: It appears Minnesota’s forward group is going to look a bit different next season.  Michael Russo of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that the Wild will sign winger Mats Zuccarello to a five-year deal and Ryan Hartman to a two-year contract when free agency officially opens up on Monday.  Zuccarello’s cap hit is expected to be around $6MM while Hartman’s is believed to be just under $2MM.

Zuccarello was one of the top free agent wingers available on the market and has been pretty consistent over the past several years.  While injuries limited him to 48 games in 2018-19, he had averaged 56 points over the previous five seasons.  Though he was banged up, the 31-year-old still managed to pick up 40 points last season; his 0.83 point per game average was the best of his career.  He followed that up with a strong showing in the playoffs, recording 11 points in 13 contests.

Zuccarello is an interesting fit for the Wild.  After selling at the trade deadline, this is a pretty quick change of direction and a five-year term for someone that will be 32 by the start of training camp carries some risk.  However, he’ll give them a boost offensively and could represent a potential replacement if they eventually find a trade for winger Jason Zucker.  Zuccarello ranked ninth in our Top 50 UFA Rankings where we projected a five-year, $30MM deal to the Wild.

Meanwhile, Hartman has had an interesting week.  He was dealt from Philadelphia to Dallas in exchange for Tyler Pitlick but a day later, the Stars opted to not tender him a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent.  He hasn’t had a lot of stability lately as he was moved at the previous two trade deadlines.  Hartman went from Chicago to Nashville in 2018 and then was flipped to the Flyers as part of the Wayne Simmonds trade back in February.

Despite that, there’s still some upside with the 24-year-old.  While he may not be a top point producer, he can still serve as a capable energy winger and has scored at least 11 goals in each of his first three full NHL seasons.  Minnesota will likely slot him in on their third or fourth line and will be counting on similar production for the next two seasons.  As he was a late non-tender, he was not considered for our Top 50 UFA Rankings.

Timo Meier Signs Extension With San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks might not be huge players in the unrestricted free agent market this year, but they are keeping another one of their excellent young players. Timo Meier has signed a four-year contract extension with the Sharks that will carry a $6MM average annual value. Meier will still be a restricted free agent at the end of the deal, and will be eligible for salary arbitration. GM Doug Wilson released a statement on his young forward:

Timo is one of only a few young, dominant power forwards in the NHL and we’re extremely pleased that he stepped forward to make this commitment to the Sharks. Timo has elevated himself into a core part of our hockey team and his play last season was a huge part of our success. We feel that his best hockey is still ahead of him.

With numbers rolling around for some of the top restricted free agents that sometimes approaches eight digits, the Sharks look like they got a steal of a deal with Meier. The 22-year-old had a breakout season and keeps showing marked improvement in each year, which the team was hoping for when they made him the ninth-overall pick in 2015. Meier tallied three goals and six points in 34 games during his rookie season, but took that to a new level in his sophomore campaign when he tallied 21 goals and 36 points. While solid, Meier took his game to a whole new level this year as he became a major component to the Sharks’ offense, scoring 30 goals and 66 points.

With a better than expected $6MM deal, the Sharks should have some extra money to add depth to their team. The team has lost a number of key players from last season as they recently allowed captain Joe Pavelski as well as winger Joonas Donskoi to walk away in free agency. The team also traded away defenseman Justin Braun on defense and have quite a few holes to fill.

Penguins To Sign Brandon Tanev To Long-Term Contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins were not expected to be major players in free agency, but have apparently fallen in love with one particular two-way forward. TSN’s Darren Dreger initially reported the deal, and the Penguins have now confirmed the signing of Brandon Tanev to a six-year contract with a $3.5MM AAV.

That’s a significant commitment to a player who made just $1.15MM last season and whose best season was 14 goals and 29 points, but the 27-year-old provides more than offense on the ice as Tanev finished with a career-high in hits with 278. That physicality, to go with the ability to show some offense and the fact that Tanev continues to improve every year suggests that Pittsburgh believes that his best years are still to come. The hope is that Tanev can provide the team with an energy booster in the bottom-six, but who can also help those lines add some offense.

Pittsburgh likely wouldn’t have been able to make a deal like that work, but general manager Jim Rutherford freed up quite a bit of cap room in the last week by trading off defenseman Olli Maatta as well as finding a trade partner for Phil Kessel and his $8MM salary.

The Jets were thrilled with the 27-year-old’s play, but with Tanev having received quite a bit of attention on the open market, Winnipeg realized early on that they wouldn’t have enough money to keep him in the fold considering the team would already be up against the cap once the team re-signs some of their core, including Patrik Laine, Kyle Connor and Neal Pionk.

Ryan Murray Re-Signs With Columbus Blue Jackets

After watching several top players walk out the door, the Columbus Blue Jackets have come to terms with one of their restricted free agents. Ryan Murray has signed two-year deal with the team, and Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports that it will be worth an average annual value of $4.6MM.

Murray has been a tough player for the Blue Jackets to read over the years as the team has always had high expectations from him after the team used the second-overall pick in the 2012 draft on him. However, injuries have prevented him from showing off his talent as in his six NHL seasons, he’s only had one season where he played in all 82 games. The next highest number was 66 in his rookie campaign. Last season, the 25-year-old appeared in 56 games, putting up a career-high 29 points, suggesting that his offensive skills have improved.

Murray was discussed earlier last month as a trade chip with rumors that Columbus and Chicago had been discussing a swap, but nothing materialized. The $4.6MM AAV will be a significant raise for Murray as he was entering his final year as a restricted free agent. He made $2.83MM on a one-year deal last season. The two-year deal guarantees that the blueliner will have to wait until after the 2021-22 season to become an unrestricted free agent, which will give Columbus even more time to decide whether they would want to hold onto him long-term. He should be battling alongside newcomer Vladislav Gavrikov and David Savard for top-four minutes next season.

Buffalo Sabres Ink John Gilmour To One-Year Deal

The Buffalo Sabres won the sweepstakes for defenseman John Gilmour, who attracted a surprising amount of interest on the open market this week. The former New York Rangers blueliner signed a one-year, one-way deal worth $700K, according to TSN’s Frank Seravalli.

Gilmour looked to be on the verge of cracking the Rangers’ lineup a couple of years ago after signing with New York after four years at Providence College. After two full years in the AHL, Gilmour appeared in 28 games during the 2017-18 season, but saw his stock drop this year as multiple defensive prospects passed him on the Rangers prospect chart. He appeared in just five games with New York this year, despite having an impressive season with the Hartford Wolf Pack, scoring 20 goals and 54 points.

Seravalli reported a week ago that Gilmour was receiving significant interest around the league, suggesting that as many as 13 teams had expressed interest in the 26-year-old. In Buffalo, Gilmour will likely provide some depth for the Sabres, but the key will be his one-way deal, which should keep him on an NHL roster for the season.
