Morning Notes: Pacioretty, Ducks, Couturier

April 18, 2018 at 11:32 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Montreal Canadiens had a terribly disappointing 2017-18 season, marred by constant trade speculation around their captain and star winger Max Pacioretty. The 29-year old forward escaped the trade deadline with the same address, but could still be on the move this summer. Arpon Basu of The Athletic (subscription required) examines the value Pacioretty holds on the trade market, and in a potential contract extension.

Interestingly, what happens to Pacioretty could be a domino of sorts for the Canadiens offseason. With the team unable to really begin a rebuild thanks to the huge contracts (and strong play when healthy) of Carey Price and Shea Weber, they are expected to be big players in free agency and could go after the top names this summer and next. If they do move their captain, expect a big splash to follow shortly after.

  • The Anaheim Ducks are on the brink of elimination again, and Elliotte Friedman spoke with Sportsnet Radio in Vancouver about where they are headed if they face another early exit. Friedman opines that perhaps they’ll start looking at their core forwards and consider changing things up, though points out that all three of Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Ryan Kesler have no-movement clauses. It would have seemed ridiculous to suggest the Ducks moving on from Perry a few seasons ago, but with him failing to hit the 20-goal plateau for two straight years, anything is possible.
  • Sean Couturier was injured in practice yesterday when he collided with Radko Gudas, but Philadelphia Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol says he’s a game-time decision for tonight’s matchup. While this simply could be gamesmanship by Hakstol to hide the severity of the injury, it would be a huge boost for Philadelphia if Couturier has suffered only a minor injury. If he does miss the game, Claude Giroux could slide back to center, a role he played for nearly his whole career before moving to the wing this year.

Josh Morrissey To Have Hearing With Department Of Player Safety

April 18, 2018 at 10:51 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

Many people were wondering whether Josh Morrissey would face any supplementary discipline for his cross-check on Minnesota’s Eric Staal last night, and the league has now announced that he’ll have a phone hearing later today. That means the Winnipeg Jets could be without another hugely important defender for Game 5, while already dealing with injuries on the back end.

Morrissey appeared to cross-check Staal right in the face during a penalty kill in the first period. Staal immediately went to the bench, and no penalty was called on the play. After the game, Minnesota head coach Bruce Boudreau claimed the non-call cost the Wild the game. Not only would it have been a 5-on-3 powerplay, but Boudreau believes Morrissey should have been thrown out of the game.

With Tyler Myers nursing an injury, and Toby Enstrom not ready to return, the Jets could be scrambling for a replacement on the blue line should Morrissey be given a suspension. Sami Niku, who was recalled as an insurance policy for Game 4, was returned today to the Manitoba Moose. He likely would be the first option if Morrissey can’t go, which puts a lot of pressure on the rookie.

Dennis Cholowski Joins Grand Rapids Griffins

April 18, 2018 at 9:23 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Dennis Cholowski has had quite the path to professional hockey, but that dream finally seems a reality. The Detroit Red Wings prospect has been assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he’ll likely suit up in the playoffs and then stay with for the 2018-19 season—that is, if he doesn’t make the NHL out of camp. Cholowski’s CHL team, the Portland Winterhawks, were eliminated from the WHL playoffs recently, ending his junior career.

In 2016, Cholowski was selected in the first round by the Red Wings who knew full well that he was planning on heading to college. The young defenseman had played in the BCHL to maintain NCAA eligibility, and was headed to St. Cloud State in 2016-17. He would make it to the collegiate ranks, but spend just one season at St. Cloud before signing his entry-level contract. That came with a single game for the Griffins last spring on an amateur tryout, though he’d have to wait for another opportunity in professional hockey.

Instead, he was sent to the CHL where he signed a deal with the Prince George Cougars. Prince George had drafted him way back in 2013 with the 200th selection in their bantam draft, never really expecting him to play for them. Instead, they received half a season—and an excellent one at that, scoring 39 points in 37 games—before moving him to Portland for a boatload of draft picks. Cholowski wold continue his strong play, scoring another 34 points in 44 games for the Winterhawks down the stretch and into the playoffs.

Cholowski was seen as a reach of sorts in his draft year, but looks like he’ll pay off for the Red Wings at the next level. A talented puck-mover, he’ll be a key part of how the Detroit re-tool looks over the next few seasons. For now, he’ll get some playoff experience with the Griffins who are trying to defend their 2017 Calder Cup Championship.

Vezina Finalists Announced; Is The Evaluation Process Flawed?

April 17, 2018 at 7:27 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 21 Comments

The NHL has announced the three finalists for the Vezina Award, given each year to the league’s best goaltender, as voted on by the league’s general managers. Vying for the trophy at the NHL Awards in Las Vegas this June will be the Winnipeg Jets’ Connor Hellebuyck, the Nashville Predators’ Pekka Rinne, and the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy. This is the first nomination for Hellebuyck and Vasilevskiy, while Rinne has previously been up for the award three times.

At first glance, the three nominees are not surprising. All three have had great seasons and are clearly among the top goaltenders in the league. However, hockey analytics guru Rob Vollman makes a pretty good case for why the evaluation process my be flawed. As Vollman points out, the only category in which the trio were tops in the league is wins, a statistic based entirely off of team performance, not individual performance. Hellebuyck and Vasilevskiy led the league with 44 wins, while Rinne was right behind with 42.  Yet, only Rinne was top three in the league among goalies with 41+ starts in save percentage, quality starts percentage, and goals saved above average, Vollman’s stats of choice. By those standards of evaluation, Vasilevskiy should have been nowhere near Vezina contention. Instead, Vollman’s poster boy for proper evaluation is the Anaheim Ducks’ John Gibson, who was a top-four finisher in each of those three categories and a top-ten finisher in wins. Also garnering some more attentions should have been the Vegas Golden Knights’ Marc-Andre Fleury and the Arizona Coyotes’ Antti Raanta, both of whom were excellent statistically, but lacked the number of starts and wins that are apparently requisite for Vezina contention in today’s NHL.

It’s no surprise that the three contenders for best goaltender are who they are. However, that doesn’t mean it’s correct, especially in a season so many other obvious choices. General managers surely do not evaluate goalies based on wins alone when evaluating them for acquisition, so why does a clearly-flawed statistic hold so much weight in the Vezina race? It’s a question worth asking and Vollman’s reaction, as well as others’, may change the voting results come next season. In the meantime, look for Rinne to finally take home the hardware this year in his fourth try, a result that was likely even with proper evaluation.

Rangers Closing In On Swedish Forward Michael Lindqvist

April 17, 2018 at 6:30 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 1 Comment

The New York Rangers are already in off-season mode following a disappointing 77-point season that saw them finish last in the Metropolitan Division and trade away several big-name veterans. GM Jeff Gorton and company clearly have at least a restructuring of the team in mind, if not a complete rebuild. With such a process often comes some unique ways of replenishing the talent that is traded away for picks and prospects. While one player already linked to the Rangers this off-season has been KHL star and former NHL standout Ilya Kovalchuk, many have questioned if adding a 35-year-old who thrives when playing with high-end talent was really the right move for a rebuilding team. A new European rumor makes much more sense. According to a Swedish news source, the Kvalls Posten, young Swedish star Michael Lindqvist is nearing a deal to join New York.

Lindqvist, 23, is a sharp-shooting right winger who is coming off a breakout season with Farjestad of the Swedish Hockey League. Although injuries limited Lindqvist to just 33 games in 2017-18, the young Swede still finished third on his team in scoring and had the best per-game production on the roster. In fact, Lindqvist’s 34 points in 33 games was the fourth-best points-per-game rate in the entire league among players who skated in at least half of their team’s games. Lindqvist also added three points in two playoff games for Farjestad, which was a quarterfinalist in the SHL this season.

In speaking about Lindqvist’s contract situation, agent Joakim Persson told the Kvalls Posten that there were a number of teams interested in Lindqvist, but that the list has been narrowed down. Persson adds the Washington Capitals to the list of finalists for Lindqvist’s services, but states that the Rangers are the heavy favorite. Persson says that a decision is approaching and that a deal will be official soon. While there will surely be an adjustment period for Lindqvist, the talented forward is a worthwhile gamble for the Rangers, who will look to reconstruct their roster with as much youth and potential as possible during the upcoming summer and beyond.

Snapshots: Panik, Kaspick, Islanders

April 17, 2018 at 5:02 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

Arizona Coyotes forward Richard Panik was arrested for trespassing on April 8th, reports ABC15 in Arizona. Panik reportedly refused to leave the entrance of a nightclub called Bevvy in Scottsdale, and was booked for criminal trespass. He was later released with a criminal citation.

Panik, acquired by the Coyotes during the season from the Chicago Blackhawks, is under contract for one more season at $2.8MM. He seemed to fit in well with the Coyotes system, recording 19 points in 35 games. The 27-year old’s future in Arizona will likely not be affected by the incident, though it is something to keep an eye on.

  • Tanner Kaspick has been assigned to the Manitoba Moose for the remainder of the season, allowing the St. Louis Blues prospect to keep playing despite his CHL team’s recent elimination. The Blues don’t have a primary AHL affiliate this season, meaning Kaspick had to be loaned to the Moose and will be under the purview of their coaching staff. The Moose are headed into the playoffs as one of the better teams in the AHL, but could use another talented player like Kaspick. The former Brandon Wheat Kings captain had 64 points in 60 games split between two teams this season.
  • According to a report from Chris Botta of SportsNet New York, the New York Islanders are looking to add a “top executive” to the hockey operations department that could work as a general manager under current President Garth Snow. While Botta lists Julian BriseBois (Tampa Bay Lightning), Paul Fenton (Nashville Predators) and Tom Fitzgerald (New Jersey Devils) as possible candidates, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports that they have not yet contacted the Devils to speak with the latter.

Calgary Flames Fire Glen Gulutzan

April 17, 2018 at 3:09 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

The Calgary Flames have dropped the hammer after a disappointing season, firing head coach Glen Gulutzan and assistants Dave Cameron and Paul Jerrard. The team will be looking for a new coach once again, after hiring Gulutzan just two seasons ago.

The Flames were supposed to be Stanley Cup contenders this season, trading away several draft picks to acquire Travis Hamonic and Mike Smith to solidify their defense and goaltending. It seemed to have the opposite effect, as the Flames missed the playoffs entirely even while Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan put up excellent seasons. Too many nights the team was unable to control their opposition, something that will be laid at the feet of the coaching staff.

Gulutzan was hired in June of 2016 and was praised for his work with young players in the ECHL and AHL, but like his stint as head coach of the Dallas Stars it didn’t work out in Calgary. Even with an 82-68-14 record through his two seasons, a first-round sweep last season marked the beginning of the end. The Ducks walked right through Calgary, with Gulutzan’s decision to start—and then immediately pull—Brian Elliott in Game 4 coming under much criticism.

Candidates to replace Gulutzan haven’t been confirmed, but the spotlight immediately turns to Bill Peters in Carolina. Peters has been tenuously linked to Calgary over the last few weeks, and has until Friday to exercise an out clause in his current contract. If it’s not Peters, there are certainly several experienced coaches floating around the league—Willie Dejardins, Alain Vigneault and Lindy Ruff come to mind—that could be potential candidates.

Zach Parise Suffers Fractured Sternum, Listed As Week-To-Week

April 17, 2018 at 3:07 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The injuries just keep piling up for the Minnesota Wild, who announced today that Zach Parise has suffered a fractured sternum and will be out on a week-to-week basis. Michael Russo of The Athletic reports that it will be six to eight weeks for the Minnesota forward, which likely takes him out for the remainder of the playoffs.

The Wild were already missing Ryan Suter, perhaps the most important player on their team, and will now have to go with one of their most important forwards. Parise has had a tough season, dealing with a back injury through the first half only to now be taken out again. He played in just 45 games total, but had three goals in the playoffs already and is a capable two-way player.

Even if Minnesota climbs out of their 2-1 series deficit, it seems unlikely that Parise will be back at all this postseason. That means the team will have to rely on other forwards for offense, something they might have to get used to going forward. The 33-year old winger has seen his point totals decline in three consecutive seasons, and if he can’t stay healthy it’s unlikely he’ll ever get back to the dynamic force he was in his youth.

Unfortunately, Parise is still under contract for another seven seasons at a cap hit of $7.5MM and a full no-movement clause. That deal, signed before the last CBA negotiations, would cause cap recapture penalties if he were to retire early. There’s no doubt that Parise is still an impactful player when healthy, but he’ll have to find some luck in that department if the Wild are to get fair value out of the rest of his contract.

Cody Glass Assigned To Chicago Wolves

April 17, 2018 at 3:02 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Just before the Chicago Wolves are about to start their AHL playoff series against the Rockford IceHogs, they’re getting a talented young forward added to their group. Cody Glass has been assigned to the AHL now that his WHL season is over. Glass’ Portland Winterhawks team was eliminated last Friday, meaning the top pick can get a taste of professional hockey down the stretch.

Glass, selected sixth overall last June by the Vegas Golden Knights, had another outstanding season in the WHL, recording 102 points in 64 regular season games before adding another 13 in 12 playoff contests. Despite that success, he was left off the Canadian World Junior team but now could get a chance to prove his worth at a higher level. It’s unclear if he’ll get into the lineup right away, but even just skating with the team will be worthwhile for his development.

The Golden Knights have obviously had a huge amount of success on the ice this season, but their draft last June looks like an impressive beginning to a prospect pipeline. Glass, along with fellow first-round picks Nick Suzuki and Erik Brannstrom all look like they will be impact NHL players in the next few years, while second-round defenseman Nicolas Hague scored 35 goals in the OHL and is already playing for the Wolves.

Anaheim Ducks Recall Reto Berra, Jacob Larsson

April 17, 2018 at 3:00 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Anaheim Ducks, fresh off a crushing 8-1 defeat at the hands of the San Jose Sharks, have recalled goaltender Reto Berra and defenseman Jacob Larsson. The San Diego Gulls missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker—ironically to the San Jose Barracuda—meaning several players will likely come up to skate with the team as “Black Aces.”

It’s unlikely that Berra especially will get into a game unless John Gibson and Ryan Miller are injured, but for Jacob Larsson one has to wonder if it’s a different story. The 20-year old defenseman might be able to help the Ducks right away, as their current group has been ravaged by injury and inconsistency. Andy Welinski and Marcus Pettersson were used for only 13 and 15 minutes respectively last night, and Cam Fowler is still trying to work his way back from injury.

Larsson is expected to play a big role on the Anaheim blue line in the future, and the first-round pick performed well this season for the Gulls. In 50 games he had just 16 points, but is a capable two-way player that can skate with the opponent’s best.
