Boston Bruins Promote Kevin Dean To NHL Assistant Coach

June 13, 2017 at 1:41 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Boston Bruins have decided to promote from within to fill their NHL assistant coach role, hiring Kevin Dean to join Bruce Cassidy behind the bench next season. Dean had worked with Cassidy for several seasons in the American Hockey League, before taking over as head coach when Cassidy moved to the NHL last year.

Dean had a long career as a professional player, bouncing back and forth between the AHL and NHL for the New Jersey Devils for many years before bouncing around during his last few years. In 331 career NHL games, the defenseman recorded 55 points and 138 penalty minutes. A long-time AHL assistant, this will be his first opportunity behind an NHL bench. The Bruins’ GM Don Sweeney explains why they made the hire:

The Bruins are excited to be promoting from within our organization. Kevin’s experience, work ethic and commitment to winning and developing players qualify him as the best coach to compliment Bruce’s staff. Kevin’s professionalism and communication skills have always been strong attributes. His success as a Head Coach this past season only reinforced our opinion that Kevin is both ready and excited for the challenges of coaching at the NHL level.

There is no word on who will take over as head coach of the Providence Bruins, and try to follow up on the 43-23-10 season that Dean led them to this year. Boston on the other hand will try to get back to the playoffs with Cassidy who turned around a struggling squad when promoted to head coach partway through the season. The team removed the interim tag from his role earlier this spring and committed to him for the foreseeable future.

Snapshots: Neal, Beck, No. 1

June 13, 2017 at 12:33 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Among his morning musings, the venerable Pierre LeBrun of TSN mentioned the possibility of the Nashville Predators, fresh off a Stanley Cup Finals loss, could leave James Neal exposed in the upcoming expansion draft. A few months ago, that would have seemed far-fetched but with Calle Jarnkrok’s increased role in the playoffs and incredibly team-friendly contract it might now be a realistic scenario.

The Predators will almost surely protect their top four defensemen, leaving just four remaining protection slots for forwards. With Filip Forsberg, Viktor Arvidsson and Ryan Johansen all being locks, Neal and Jarnkrok are likely battling for the final spot. That is, if the team isn’t working out a side-deal like so many other clubs with Vegas in order to protect more than the allotted number of players.

  • Taylor Beck is headed to the KHL, signing with Avtomobilist today. The 26-year old was set to become a restricted free agent once again, this time with the New York Rangers whose farm team he ended the season with. The once third-round pick of the Predators was traded four times in a two year span, including a deal at the deadline this year. Despite scoring 66 points in 56 games this season in the AHL, Beck got into just five NHL contests and will now try his luck somewhere else. In 92 career NHL games, he has 23 points and always seemed just a step behind what it took to make an impact at the highest level. He’ll try to refine his game in Russia, while possibly returning at some point down the road.
  • In the latest from Mike Morreale of NHL.com, he speaks to New Jersey Devils GM Ray Shero about the upcoming entry draft and the possibility of moving the #1 pick. “What would it get me to trade the No. 1 pick outright? I couldn’t even tell you,” Shero tells Morreale. There has been some speculation that the Devils could trade down to take a defenseman, but with the prospect of taking one of Nolan Patrick or Nico Hischier staring you in the face, it’s hard to pull the trigger. As we’ve examined before, trading the first-overall pick is a risky business.

Anaheim Ducks Thought To Have Side-Deal With Vegas

June 13, 2017 at 11:10 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Bob McKenzie of TSN announced on Twitter that the Anaheim Ducks and Vegas Golden Knights are believed to have a side-deal worked out already in regards to the expansion draft. This comes on the heels of rumblings that the team did not ask Kevin Bieksa to waive his no-trade clause, something that would either point directly to a deal with Vegas or a buyout of the veteran defender.

Anaheim has been the target of much speculation all season about how they would possibly protect all of their prized defenders, and while many were expecting them to sell off Sami Vatanen or Josh Manson for pennies on the dollar, this other option always remained. Ducks’ GM Bob Murray has always had the chance to make a deal with Vegas, and has seemed calm when talking about the expansion draft for months.

This doesn’t mean that Vatanen isn’t headed out of town, quite the opposite. He could be the player heading to Vegas in the deal, possibly with a bad contract headed with him. The Ducks could use the cap space currently occupied by Clayton Stoner, and if Murray is willing to sweeten the deal with another asset Vegas could be a landing spot for both defenders. Pierre LeBrun of TSN makes it clear that the team is simply not willing to lose Josh Manson in the draft for nothing, something that would surely happen if the protection lists were submitted right now with no deals.

The exact specifics of any Anaheim-Vegas trade likely won’t be clear until after the selections are revealed on the 21st, but it’s clear that the expansion club has already generated some assets just from being willing to deal. Already there were reports that Chicago will give up Trevor van Riemsdyk if Vegas is willing to take Marcus Kruger, while Columbus might give up a hefty package to see David Clarkson’s name on someone else’s ledger.

Dion Phaneuf Not Expected To Waive NMC

June 13, 2017 at 10:52 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

Even though he was asked to waive his no-movement clause in order for the Ottawa Senators to protect a different defenseman, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that Dion Phaneuf is expected to refuse the request. He will not waive, and thus will require automatic protection in the expansion draft should he remain on the roster when the protection lists are submitted on Saturday evening.

Phaneuf is one of the most interesting cases among players asked to waive, as his contract only contains a limited no-trade clause that allows him to block deals to all but ten teams. That’s how the Maple Leafs executed the previous deal that sent him to Ottawa, and how the Senators could potentially move him again in order to protect someone else. Currently, the team will have to choose between Marc Methot and Cody Ceci for the final defensive slot if they go with the 7-3-1 protection method, with Chris Wideman and Mark Borowiecki having cases of their own.

Ottawa could go with the eight skater protection method, but that would leave several interesting forwards available. Obviously the team hoped that Phaneuf would waive the clause, assuming his contract would be protection enough against selection. As we discussed back in February when it was first suggested that the team would ask him, there is no guarantee that Vegas would pass up a former Norris finalist and Maple Leafs captain even with his hefty cap hit. The 32-year old Phaneuf comes with a $7MM cap hit for the next four seasons, but his actual salary drops to $5.5MM by the final season.

The Senators will now have to figure out which direction they take. Do they move Phaneuf (if they can) and take whatever asset they can get for him, or risk watching another good defenseman walk out the door for free. There is always the option of making a side-deal with Vegas, something that many teams around the league may have to do.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Andrew Miller

June 13, 2017 at 10:12 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Carolina Hurricanes have locked up some AHL depth, inking Andrew Miller (no, not that Andrew Miller MLBTR fans) to a one-year two-way contract that will see him earn the minimum $650K in the NHL. Miller was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

The 28-year old Miller is an excellent AHL scorer, and put up another solid season with 41 points in 55 games for the Charlotte Checkers this year. The former Yale standout has played 15 NHL games in his career, scoring six points. Though he’s not expected to make an appearance with the Hurricanes next season, he will provide some much-needed stability to their AHL club.

Charlotte recently lost their head coach Ulf Samuelsson to the Chicago Blackhawks, and have yet to name a successor for next season. While there has yet to be word on assistant coach Peter Andersson, he was brought in by Samuelsson after working together in Sweden and has little experience as a head coach. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a whole new staff brought in for next season, and they’ll need Miller at his very best to help lead the squad.

Marko Dano Signs One-Year Contract With Winnipeg Jets

June 13, 2017 at 9:17 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Winnipeg Jets can mark off one item on their offseason to-do list, as the team has signed Marko Dano to a one-year contract. The contract is one-way, and worth $850K for the 2017-18 season. Getting him under contract gives the Jets more options for the expansion draft, as he could be exposed as one of their two forwards who meets the games played minimums. Marko Dano

As discussed in the Jets’ Expansion Primer, the team is in a tough spot should Toby Enstrom not waive his no-movement clause. We won’t find out if he did or not until the protection lists are released, but if he didn’t there are going to be handful of interesting players available for the Golden Knights. Dano may not be the top name, but he’s definitely one of them after flashing some of the potential that made him a first-round pick just a few years ago.

Dano was acquired by the Jets along with a first-round pick—which the team used to trade up and select Logan Stanley—for Andrew Ladd last year, and is a promising young player in his own right. The 22-year old was actually drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets before being shipped off to Chicago as part of the Brandon Saad deal. Selected as a center, he hasn’t played much down the middle in the NHL.

Now playing on a one-way contract, Dano is expected to spend most of the year with the Jets this season as a bottom-six winger with the potential to develop into a more offensive player. His speed and defensive game is good enough to play limited minutes, but if he’s to take the next step he needs to break through offensively. Even in the AHL he’s rarely found sustained success, something he’ll look for in Winnipeg as he turns 23.

More Players Not Asked To Waive NMCs

June 12, 2017 at 8:41 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano 5 Comments

Newsday’s Arthur Staple reported that the New York Islanders did not ask forward Andrew Ladd or defenseman Johnny Boychuk to waive their NMCs, and the New York Post’s Larry Brooks reported that the New York Rangers did not ask defensemen Dan Girardi or Marc Staal to waive theirs either.

Ladd just finished his first season on his new $5.5MM AAV contract with the Islanders, and was unlikely to be exposed at the expansion draft, despite a underwhelming season. While Ladd scored 23 goals, he only added 8 assists for 31 points in 78 games. Boychuk finished second in average ice time, and was one of the Islanders’ better defenders all year. His protection, however, means that unless the Islanders trade Travis Hamonic, both Calvin de Haan and Ryan Pulock will be left unprotected.

[Check out the Islanders Expansion Primer here]

The Rangers’ non-moves were expected as well. Girardi finished the season averaging 19:06min a game, and Staal with 19:11. Neither had stellar production, but both are mainstays on the Rangers blueline. No word on whether John Tavares or Rick Nash were asked to waive their NMCs, though those scenarios are very unlikely.

Expansion Primer: Columbus Blue Jackets

June 12, 2017 at 7:36 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

We’re continuing to break down each team’s situation as it pertains to the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, coming up next week: which players are eligible, and which will likely warrant protection or may be on the block. Each team is required to submit their protection lists by 4pm CDT on June 17th. The full rules on eligibility can be found here, and CapFriendly has provided a handy expansion tool to make your own lists.

The Columbus Blue Jackets surprised everybody with a 108-point finish this season, good for 4th in the NHL. Breakout seasons by Alexander Wennberg, Zach Werenski and Seth Jones propelled the team to its best finish ever, and erased any early-season doubt for embattled coach John Tortorella. Despite the strong finish, however, the Blue Jackets faced the defending (and now eventual) Stanley Cup champions in the first round, losing 4-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Blue Jackets are also one of a few teams that faces significant expansion draft issues. The team will lose one significant player no matter how they structure their protection list, and how good that player may be will depend on what the Blue Jackets do with veteran forward Scott Hartnell.

Eligible Players (Non-UFA)

Forwards:

Brandon Saad, Brandon Dubinsky (NMC), Nick Foligno (NMC), Scott Hartnell (NMC), Cam Atkinson, Boone Jenner, Matt Calvert, William Karlsson, Lukas Sedlak, Zac Dalpe, Alexander Wennberg, Josh Anderson

Defensemen:

Seth Jones, Jack Johnson, David Savard, Ryan Murray, Scott Harrington, John Ramage

Goaltenders:

Sergei Bobrovsky (NMC), Joonas Korpisalo, Anton Forsberg, Oscar Dansk

Notable Exemptions

David Clarkson, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Sonny Milano, Zach Werenski

Key Decisions

The Blue Jackets will lose a significant player, that much is certain. There is too much depth in the organization and not enough protection slots. The Blue Jackets will most likely use the 7F/3D/1G protection scheme over the 8F/1G because the team will protect at least three defensemen: Seth Jones, Ryan Murray, David Savard, and Jack Johnson..

Up front, Columbus must protect Brandon Dubinsky, Nick Foligno, and Scott Hartnell. All three have NMCs, and none were asked to waive the clauses before Monday’s deadline. Assuming that none of the above are bought out (more on that later), the Blue Jackets are left with four protection slots, yet have at least seven players worthy of protection. Brandon Saad, Cam Atkinson, Boone Jenner, Matt Calvert, William Karlsson, Alexander Wennberg, and Josh Anderson are all significant enough to warrant protection, and yet three will be exposed in the expansion draft.

No-brainer protections go to Saad, Atkinson, Jenner, and Wennberg. That leaves one of Karlsson, Calvert, and Anderson available for Vegas. Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch thinks Anderson is the most valuable of the unprotected, and would almost certainly be selected by Vegas. Anderson’s 17G and 12A were a nice surprise, and the Blue Jackets will miss him.

All that may change, however, if the Blue Jackets have further plans for Scott Hartnell. The team did not ask Hartnell to waive his NMC clause, implying that the Blue Jackets either have a side deal in place with Vegas, or they plan to buy out Hartnell.

The Blue Jackets may have made a deal with Vegas so that Vegas does not select a certain player in exchange for a prospect or draft pick. If that is the case, the Blue Jackets do not have to worry about opening up a protection slot, and can leave Hartnell alone. Alternatively, the Blue Jackets may buy out Hartnell’s contract, freeing up a protection slot and $3.25MM in cap space next season. Hartnell will be 35 next year, and may not factor into Columbus’s future plans.

On defense, the Blue Jackets will most likely protect valuable young commodities Seth Jones and David Savard, exposing either Ryan Murray or Jack Johnson. Johnson may not put up gaudy numbers—5G and 18A in 82 games—but he still averaged the third most ice time during the season with over 21 minutes a night. He then ramped that up to just under 26 minutes a night in the playoffs. On the other hand, Murray is much younger—23 versus 30—and may have more potential in management’s eyes. Murray will also be an RFA next season while Johnson will be a UFA. And despite Murray’s injury history, the Blue Jackets may opt to go with potential over stability.

In goal, the Blue Jackets must protect Sergei Bobrovsky because of a NMC. That exposes one of Joonas Korpisalo or Anton Forsberg. Korpisalo just signed a two-year extension worth $900K, which allows Columbus to satisfy its goaltending exposure requirement.

Finally, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Blue Jackets are talking to Vegas about David Clarkson. Friedman notes that Columbus may send a first-round pick or a prospect to shed Clarkson’s salary. Clarkson’s playing career is all but over, and he will most likely spend the rest of it on LTIR. However, by moving Clarkson, Columbus has much more wiggle room in the offseason to sign key RFAs, and Vegas has help to reach the salary cap floor.

Projected Protection List

F Brandon Saad
F Brandon Dubinsky (NMC)
F Nick Foligno (NMC)
F Cam Atkinson
F Boone Jenner
F William Karlsson
F Scott Hartnell (NMC)

D Seth Jones
D David Savard
D Ryan Murray

G Sergei Bobrovsky (NMC)

What happens to Scott Hartnell is a toss-up at this point. There is no indication whether Columbus has a deal in place or plans to buy him out. Given Hartnell’s dedication to the organization, however, it may be hard for Columbus to justify buying him out to fans.

Columbus will lose something of value. The silver lining is that they will only lose one player through the draft. That means that, barring any trades, even if they cannot make room for Josh Anderson, Jack Johnson, or Joonas Korpisalo, they still retain at least two of those players through the expansion draft. The Blue Jackets will be a different team after the expansion draft, but it may not be as dire as some predict.

Scott Hartnell Not Asked To Waive NMC

June 12, 2017 at 5:15 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano 2 Comments

The Columbus Blue Jackets did not ask veteran forward Scott Hartnell to waive his No-Movement Clause before the NHL’s deadline today, reports the Columbus Dispatch’s Aaron Portzline. NHL teams had until 5pm EST today to ask players to waive any NMCs before the expansion draft. Because teams must use a protection slot to protect any player with an NMC, some teams may ask players to waive the clause to free up a protection slot.

The non-waiver is significant because Columbus is one of the few teams who may lose a significant piece in the expansion draft. Portzline believes that the non-move implies Columbus has either agreed to a deal with the Vegas Golden Knights, or that Columbus will buy out Hartnell’s contract.

Right now Columbus has three forward slots tied up in Brandon Dubinsky, Nick Foligno, and Hartnell. Assuming Columbus protects 7F / 3d / 1G (because of Seth Jones, Ryan Murray, and David Savard), the team only has four spots for Brandon Saad, Cam Atkinson, Boone Jenner, Matt Calvert, William Karlsson, Alexander Wennberg, and Josh Anderson. The consensus is that absent any sort of deal, Josh Anderson represents the best bet to go to Vegas. However, if Columbus and Vegas have a deal worked out, the Blue Jackets may be able to either keep Anderson, or receive some assets for him.

The other option is that Columbus buys out Hartnell, making the veteran a free agent. Buying him out would give Columbus an extra protection slot to use on one of its young forwards. According to Portzline, buying out Hartnell would save Columbus $2.5MM over two seasons, and open up $3.25MM in cap space next year. Hartnell scored 13G and 24A in 78 games this year.

Snapshots: Clarkson, NMCs, Hurricanes

June 12, 2017 at 4:17 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Columbus Blue Jackets have been rumored to be in discussions with the Vegas Golden Knights over a possible David Clarkson deal for some time, and today Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet again hinted at a possible trade between the two teams. The fact that Vegas might take on a bad contract is no surprise, but the potential return will shock many people. Friedman on Sportsnet 960:

Vegas is the epicenter of [all the trade talks]. I think they’re looking at a deal with Columbus, most likely for David Clarkson. They’ll get some nice pieces out of that, probably a first-round draft pick and maybe a prospect or two.

That would seem like an extremely high price to get Clarkson’s contract off the books, seeing as how he won’t even see the ice in Vegas as his injury has virtually retired him at this point. The Blue Jackets have already moved their second-round pick this season, so moving the #24 selection would mean they would be heading to the podium for their first selection at #86. That’s a long way down for any team to wait in a draft, even one with the solid young core that Columbus has built. Since Clarkson can be placed on LTIR when the season begins, the benefit for the Blue Jackets would be almost entirely in the offseason where they could spend more money re-signing their players and dabbling in free agency. If the salary cap stays flat, the team simply must move out some salary in order to retain Josh Anderson and Alexander Wennberg, both of whom are restricted free agents this summer.

  • The deadline for requests to waive a no-movement clause has come and gone, and we only know for certain about a handful of players. Michael Russo of the Star Tribune and Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun both report that their respective teams will not announce whether they’ve asked Jason Pominville or Toby Enstrom to waive their clauses. Both players would be doing their team a great favor for the expansion draft if they did waive them, but many in the game believe that if you’ve worked hard enough to deserve one you shouldn’t be asked to waive it for any reason. Earlier today it was reported that Marc-Andre Fleury waived his clause back in February, giving the Penguins some certainty at the position but still playing some of his very best hockey in the playoffs for the club. We’ll find out who all waived their clauses when the protection lists come out on Sunday morning.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes have promoted two scouts in their organization, naming Sheldon Ferguson head North American scout and Robert Kron head European scout. Both will remain under the purview of Tony MacDonald who will continue in his role as Director of Amateur Scouting. These promotions come at a time just before a very important draft for the Hurricanes in which they hold 10 picks. Recently, GM Ron Francis had admitted that he hopes to move some of the picks for players before the draft, but is content in using them if he can’t find the right deal. With four picks in the first two rounds, Carolina could easily move up in the draft as well should a targeted player drop far enough.
