Logan Brown Close To Returning
- The Blues should get some help on the injury front soon as Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes (Twitter link) that center Logan Brown is close to returning to the lineup. He has been out with an upper-body injury for a little under three weeks so he has yet to play this season. The 24-year-old picked up 11 points in 39 games for St. Louis last season in limited action while giving them some size at the bottom of the lineup. Brown remains on the active roster despite being out this long and accordingly, they won’t have to clear a roster spot once he’s cleared to return.
Pavel Buchnevich Game-Time Decision Against Seattle
The St. Louis Blues could be without an impact piece tonight when they visit the Seattle Kraken. Top-six winger Pavel Buchnevich left the ice early during their morning skate today and will be a game-time decision tonight with a lower-body injury, according to head coach Craig Berube.
The Blues were one of the last teams to open their season and, as a result, have only played one game so far. Buchnevich was one of their best players in a road outing against Columbus, though, notching a goal and an assist and leading the team with a +3 rating. The Russian winger is coming off a gargantuan season in which he broke the point-per-game plateau for the first time, scoring 76 points in 73 games. If Buchnevich can’t go, the team would either replace him in the lineup with Josh Leivo or dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen, getting Calle Rosen in for his season debut.
Tyler Pitlick Still Skating With Blues
- Last week, the St. Louis Blues released veteran forward Tyler Pitlick from his PTO. Already into their LTIR and with 14 forward on the roster, it appears the team simply didn’t have room for the forward, no matter how he played. However, NHL.com’s Lou Korac reports, Pitlick was skating today with St. Louis. It’s not a sure sign that a formal reunion is imminent, but the arrangement isn’t unheard of either. Should the Blues encounter a further injury issue, Pitlick will be fresh and already acclimated to the group, providing for a seamless transition, and for Pitlick, it provides him with a place to skate with NHLers and NHL eyes on him.
Hayden Hodgson, Anthony Angello Clear Waivers
Saturday: Both Hodgson and Angello cleared waivers, Friedman reports. They have both been assigned to the minors. No one was placed on waivers today.
Friday: Two players hit the wire today, as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that Hayden Hodgson of the Philadelphia Flyers and Anthony Angello of the St. Louis Blues have been placed on waivers.
Earlier today, Flyers head coach John Tortorella didn’t hold back with his comments, telling reporters including Charlie O’Connor of The Athletic that he didn’t think Hodgson had a good camp, and that he wasn’t ready to play last night.
Even in a game where the team lost Owen Tippett early, Tortorella gave Hodgson fewer than five minutes of ice time. Placement on waivers shouldn’t surprise anyone, though it is a little disappointing after such a great story last year.
Undrafted, the 26-year-old Hodgson grinded his way through several years in the ECHL and then was outstanding for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, earning himself an NHL call-up. He scored three points in six games and looked like a classic late-blooming bottom-sixer. Unfortunately, that run won’t continue just yet, as he’ll be heading to the minor leagues if he clears.
Angello, meanwhile, was always expected to start in the AHL but had been injured and started the year on season-opening injured reserve. A waiver placement suggests that he’s ready to resume playing, and will head to the Springfield Thunderbirds should he clear. The 6’5″ forward has just 31 games of NHL experience under his belt, four of which came last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
St. Louis Blues Recall Jake Neighbours, Josh Leivo
After sending them down yesterday to submit a cap-compliant opening night roster, the St. Louis Blues have recalled forwards Josh Leivo and Jake Neighbours ahead of the team’s season opener on Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Neighbours is attempting to stick in the NHL full-time this season after receiving a nine-game trial in 2021-22. One of the team’s best prospects, the 20-year-old Neighbours can be a dominant power forward at times and is coming off a Memorial Cup appearance with the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings. Neighbours will now be able to be sent to the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds if he can’t stick in the NHL, rather than having to return to junior hockey. He’s slated to make his season debut along with the rest of the team on Saturday, likely playing alongside Brayden Schenn and Ivan Barbashev.
Leivo is also expected to play Saturday as Logan Brown is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury. A new addition to the Blues organization, Leivo had three points in seven games last season with the Carolina Hurricanes and was dominant in the playoffs with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves en route to a Calder Cup championship, scoring 29 points in just 18 games. With over 200 games of NHL experience, Leivo is a fine fill-in on the team’s fourth line and could make a case for himself to stay up with the team longer-term, albeit if it’s just as a healthy scratch. It wouldn’t be a new experience for him, infamously playing just 16 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2017-18 under then-head coach Mike Babcock despite being healthy and on the active roster virtually all season long.
Edmonton Oilers Acquire Klim Kostin
The Edmonton Oilers have acquired forward Klim Kostin from the St. Louis Blues in a one-for-one swap for defenseman Dmitri Samorukov, according to a team tweet. Both Kostin and Samorukov cleared waivers earlier this week.
Kostin, 23, has played just 46 NHL games since the Blues selected him with the final pick of the first round in 2017. 40 of those 46 games in 2021-22, where Kostin had four goals and five assists for nine points playing on a semi-full-time basis for the first time. Kostin also had just six points in 17 AHL games with the Springfield Thunderbirds last season. He’s never had much sustained offensive success, even in the AHL, and five years after being drafted, an NHL future for Kostin is fading quickly.
It’s the opposite for Samorukov, however, who now may get an NHL opportunity right out of the gate with the Blues. With injuries to Marco Scandella and Scott Perunovich dismantling the team’s left-shot defense depth, Samorukov comes in as a young player who can battle to capture a bottom-pairing role. It was rather surprising when Samorukov cleared waivers yesterday, considering how close he is to being NHL-ready. Selected 84th overall in the same 2017 draft, Samorukov made his NHL debut last season and emerged as a strong top-four defender with AHL Bakersfield.
Samorukov should immediately enter a battle with Niko Mikkola for NHL minutes right out of the gate. Given the team’s thin depth, it seems unlikely they’d opt to send Samorukov to Springfield for added conditioning. Add in the consideration that Samorukov wasn’t able to participate in training camp with the Blues and become adjusted to the team’s staff, and it makes sense that they would keep him around on the NHL roster for the time being.
For Kostin, the AHL does seem like the most likely option given the emergence of Dylan Holloway and Edmonton’s tight salary cap situation.

It’s an important day for waivers as the regular season approaches, and several potential targets are available. With the preseason wrapping up, teams will try to sneak players through at the last second and keep them in the organization for the time being.
Many of these placements are due to salary cap restrictions or LTIR machinations to give teams maximum flexibility as the season begins. Everyone from yesterday’s list cleared.

Tyler Pitlick Released From PTO
There was a time not so long ago when Tyler Pitlick was considered a solid bottom-six option in the NHL. The big, physical forward was even selected by the Seattle Kraken in the expansion draft, and then netted them a fourth-round pick when the Calgary Flames wanted to add him to their squad.
Today, Pitlick was released from his PTO by the St. Louis Blues, meaning he’s without a job just a few days before the season begins. The 30-year-old forward played just 39 games last season split between the Flames and Montreal Canadiens, scoring just five points in the process. It appears as though his days in the NHL may be numbered, and a minor league landing spot may be next.
Selected 31st overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2010, Pitlick never did become the two-way center that some expected. In fact, he barely played in the middle at all at the NHL level, instead settling into a depth role on the wing, where he used his physicality more than anything else. His best season came in 2017-18 with the Dallas Stars, when he scored 14 goals and 27 points but otherwise he has just 62 other points in the remaining 245 games of his career.
What follows is unclear for Pitlick but with so few opportunities available around the league, the minor leagues or overseas may have to be an option. He hasn’t played in the AHL since the 2015-16 season when he had 21 points in 37 games for the Bakersfield Condors.
St. Louis Blues Recall Five Players
Don’t panic, Blues fans, the team didn’t suffer a sweeping wave of injuries. The St. Louis Blues have recalled five players that were previously cut from training camp to fill out the roster for tomorrow’s preseason game. The match is in Columbus against the Blue Jackets, and Will Bitten, Hugh McGing, Mathias Laferriere, Brady Lyle, and Steven Santini have been recalled ahead of it.
St. Louis has just two games left on their exhibition schedule, with Saturday’s home game against the Chicago Blackhawks wrapping up the preseason. Then things kick off, coincidentally, against those same Blue Jackets next weekend, another reason why they might not want to show them the full NHL lineup tomorrow night.
It’s another chance for some of the minor league talent to show what they can do, though none of these five are likely to see extended time with the NHL club this season. Santini is the only one with any experience at the highest level, having played 119 NHL games, but after spending the entire 2021-22 campaign with the Springfield Thunderbirds, he shouldn’t expect much time with the Blues.
There will likely be several moves like this by teams around the league in the coming days, as they try to avoid any injuries to starters before the season begins. A week from now, though, things will be full speed ahead on the 2022-23 season.
