Lightning To Reassign Cam Atkinson, Logan Brown

March 5: Atkinson and Brown cleared waivers, according to Friedman. Both will be reassigned to Syracuse as the Lightning look to close a trade with the Kraken for forwards Oliver Bjorkstrand and Yanni Gourde.

March 4: The Lightning have placed forwards Cam Atkinson and Logan Brown on waivers for reassignment to AHL Syracuse, per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports. Brown wasn’t previously under contract with the Bolts, so the move indicates he’s been promoted from his contract with Syracuse and signed to an NHL contract for the rest of the campaign.

It’s certainly eye-popping to see Atkinson, a veteran of over 800 NHL games, on the waiver wire. His performance after signing a one-year, $900K deal with the Bolts early in free agency, though, has left much to be desired. The 35-year-old has 3-5–8 through 36 games and is averaging a career-low 8:49 per night. He’s become an increasingly frequent healthy scratch as a result, sitting out a season-high four straight contests entering tonight’s game against his former team, the Blue Jackets.

Atkinson was still a semi-serviceable top-nine piece for the Flyers last year, posting 13-15–28 through 70 games. It wasn’t nearly enough to justify his $5.875MM cap hit, though, and Philadelphia opted to buy him out with one year remaining on his contract. The downturn in production from the diminutive yet skilled Atkinson came after he missed the entire 2022-23 campaign following neck surgery, one that unfortunately seems to have tanked his effectiveness in his career’s twilight.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2008 draft by the Blue Jackets, Atkinson was a top-six fixture in Columbus for a decade. He posted 402 points in 627 games with the club before they traded him to Philly in the 2021 offseason in a blockbuster one-for-one exchange that sent Jakub Voráček the other way. Injuries have derailed both players’ careers since, with Voráček since retiring due to concussions.

Now in Tampa, Atkinson has been superseded by players like Zemgus Girgensons and Gage Goncalves on their depth chart. He’s been tried at right wing on the second line with Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel – a role that’s Tampa’s top priority this week to fill. Waiving Atkinson gives them additional roster and salary cap flexibility to achieve that goal.

They’ll also add Brown as a recall option down the stretch, assuming he clears waivers. The 26-year-old center will earn a pro-rated salary of $775K in the NHL and $350K in the AHL down the stretch, per PuckPedia.

The No. 11 pick in the 2016 draft, Brown hasn’t skated in an NHL game since making 30 appearances for the Blues in the 2022-23 campaign. He signed a two-way deal with Tampa for 2023-24 but ended up spending the entire season on injured reserve following an undisclosed surgery. He returned to the Bolts on a camp tryout and landed an AHL deal with Syracuse, where the 6’6″ pivot has 7-12–19 through 25 appearances.

Brown won’t count against the Bolts’ active roster since he was waived on the same day he signed a contract.

Lightning Expected To Release Logan Brown

The Lightning have released center Logan Brown from his professional tryout, PuckPedia reports. He’s expected to remain in the organization on a contract with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch.

Brown signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Bolts back in July 2023 after being non-tendered by the Blues. But the 6’6″ pivot sustained a hip injury in training camp that required surgery, which ended up shutting him down for the entire 2023-24 season.

Unfortunately, after being given a second chance in Tampa on a PTO, Brown has also missed the last few days of camp with an undisclosed injury. Injured players can’t be placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment, so for now, signing him to an NHL deal and attempting to send him to Syracuse that way wouldn’t have been an option. Instead, he’ll start the year in Syracuse to get up to speed as he returns from a lengthy injury absence. He’s still an unrestricted free agent and is eligible to sign with any NHL club, but it’s certainly possible Tampa Bay will look to quickly re-sign Brown after he gets some AHL action and attempt to pass him through waivers to send him back to the Crunch or keep him around on the NHL roster.

The 26-year-old Brown made his NHL debut with the Senators back in 2017-18, one year after being taken 11th overall in the 2016 draft. The big-bodied center has never been able to convert his offensive success from juniors to the NHL level, posting only seven goals and 26 points in 99 career appearances thus far in parts of six seasons. He’s been much more effective in the minors, where he has 98 points in 115 games for the Blues and Senators affiliates.

Brown’s 27th birthday is in March 2025, so regardless of his service time lost to injury, he’ll be eligible for outright UFA status next summer if he happens to ink a one-year deal with the Lightning or any other team.

Logan Brown To Sign PTO With Lightning

Free-agent center Logan Brown is set to sign a PTO with the Lightning, Andy Strickland of Bally Sports Midwest relays.

The 2016 first-round pick inked a two-way deal with Tampa Bay last summer but sustained a hip injury in training camp that required surgery and cost him the entire 2023-24 season. The 26-year-old was free to sign anywhere after the Lightning opted not to issue him a qualifying offer by the June 30 deadline, but with no interest from other teams for a guaranteed contract, he’ll stick with the Bolts on a tryout.

Brown, selected by the Senators with the No. 11 pick eight years ago, has only appeared in 99 NHL regular season games. He’s totaled seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points while averaging 10:32 per game.

The North Carolina native played parts of four seasons in Ottawa before a trade to St. Louis in 2021. He played a career-high 39 games upon arrival in 2021-22 and looked to be a more impactful contributor in 2022-23, but an upper-body injury limited him to 30 games. The Blues didn’t tender him a qualifying offer the following summer, making him a UFA for the first time.

Brown’s size and strength has always been his most effective asset, checking in at 6’6″ and 227 lbs. He’s produced strong offensive numbers at both the junior and AHL levels, averaging 0.85 points per game across 115 minor-league appearances since turning pro, but he hasn’t been able to convert it into success on the scoresheet at the NHL level.

If Brown can successfully shake off the rust in training camp, he’s a strong candidate to earn a two-way deal and look to have success in a depth role in Tampa Bay. He’ll join a group contending for bottom-six spots that includes Mitchell Chaffee, Jesse Ylonen, and 2022 No. 11 pick Conor Geekie, fresh off being acquired from the Utah Hockey Club.

Atlantic Notes: Pinto, Senators, Brown

Speaking at Steve Staios’ introductory press conference today (video link), Senators GM Pierre Dorion indicated that the most recent discussions with unsigned center Shane Pinto occurred yesterday so at least there is no stalemate in discussions yet.  Ottawa’s situation is well-known at this point; they need to free up cap space before they can re-sign the 22-year-old who is expected to receive a two-year bridge deal around the $2.5MM range when everything is finalized.  Mathieu Joseph is the speculative cap casualty although the asking price from other teams is high to take on the remaining three years of his deal.  Dominik Kubalik, who came over as part of the return for Alex DeBrincat, might be a bit easier to move as an expiring deal.  Both wingers are off to good starts to their preseasons with two goals and an assist each in their first two outings.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic:

  • Still with the Senators, the team is expected to make a significant number of cuts this week, Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch reports.  At the moment, Ottawa is carrying 51 players on its training camp roster but they are expected to trim that to between 32 and 36 before they head to Eastern Canada for a pair of games on Sunday and Monday.  Meanwhile, Garrioch adds that captain Brady Tkachuk skated today after taking a stick to the eye on Wednesday and could suit up in one of those upcoming contests.
  • Lightning center Logan Brown is dealing with an injury that will keep him out for the start of the season, relays Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter link). The 25-year-old inked a one-year, two-way deal with Tampa Bay at the beginning of free agency after being non-tendered.  He played in 30 games last season with St. Louis and was expected to push for a spot at the end of the roster in training camp, an outcome that now won’t be happening.  Encina adds that blueline prospect Roman Schmidt will also miss the start of the season due to injury.

Tampa Bay Lightning Sign Conor Sheary, Four Others

The Tampa Bay Lightning are signing forwards Conor Sheary and Luke Glendening to bolster their bottom six, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports. The team announced a three-year, $2MM per season contract for Sheary. Glendening’s contract is two years at $800K per season, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Eduardo A. Encina. They’ve also added netminder Jonas Johansson on a one-year, league-minimum deal.

They’ve also signed 2016 first-round pick Logan Brown to a one-year, two-way $775k contract, as well as forward Mitchell Chaffee to the same deal.

Heading into today’s free agency, and with the cap space situation at hand for the team, these are exactly the type of moves that Tampa was expected to make. Sheary and Glendening ultimately improve the bottom six lines, while Johansson gives the team a quality third-string backup option.

With Sheary, the Lightning should get tremendous value out of this signing. Over the last two seasons playing for the Washington Capitals, Sheary has scored 34 goals and 46 assists in just under 160 games. He became an exceptional middle-six option for the Capitals and should do the exact same in Tampa Bay.

In Glendening, the Lightning had a player that will undoubtedly help with the team’s possession numbers. Over the course of his 10-year career, Glendening has averaged a 55.7% faceoff percentage, while averaging a whopping 58.9% with the Dallas Stars alone. Already garnering a defensive unit that is one of the league’s best at moving the puck, the team will benefit greatly from having Glendening take important faceoffs.

Next, Johansson gives the team insurance if one of their regular goaltenders goes down with an injury. Spending last season primarily playing for the Colorado Avalanche’s AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles, Johansson sported a .920 SV% and a 2.33 GAA, helping lead his team to the 2023 Calder Cup playoffs. The Lightning are still expected to sign a more stable backup behind Andrei Vasilevskiy for the 2023-24 NHL season.

Finally, Brown adds an intriguing former top prospect for the Lightning’s development team to get their hands on. Injuries have laid waste to Brown’s development path so far but he’s been a difference-maker at the AHL level and perhaps Tampa Bay thinks they can unlock some of his upside at the NHL level.

St. Louis Blues Issue Three Qualifying Offers

The St. Louis Blues have extended qualifying offers to three of their six pending restricted free agents, retaining the negotiating rights to forwards Hugh McGing and Alexey Toropchenko, as well as defenseman Tyler Tucker.

Notably, forward Logan Brown and defenseman Dmitri Samorukov were not issued qualifying offers and will become unrestricted free agents on July 1 if they’re not qualified within three days. AHL defenseman Brady Lyle was also left unqualified.

A 2018 fifth-round pick, McGing made his NHL debut two months ago and is making strides in the minors. The 24-year-old picked up a career-high 17 goals, 22 assists, and 39 points in 71 games with the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds, where he’ll likely return next season.

Toropchenko, also 24, became a full-time NHLer this season, a role he’s expected to reprise in 2023-24. Selected a year before McGing in the draft, Toropchenko recorded 19 points in 69 games with the Blues and is developing into a capable bottom-six piece. If he signs his qualifying offer, he’ll be retained next season on a two-way deal worth $787.5K in the NHL, although he’ll likely negotiate (and receive) a higher-paying one-way deal.

Tucker, the 200th overall selection in 2018, is an outside candidate to crack the Blues’ lineup out of camp next season after some strong defensive showings in the minors. He got 26 games in the NHL lineup with St. Louis last year, too, recording four points and a -9 rating. The hard-nosed defender posted 21 points in 41 games with Springfield and will also earn $787.5K in the NHL on a two-way deal if he accepts his qualifying offer.

As part of this, the Blues are parting ways with a couple of reclamation projects that didn’t pan out in Brown and Samorukov. The Blues acquired Brown, the 11th overall pick in 2016, from the Senators in September of 2021 in exchange for forward Zach Sanford. He’s managed 69 games for the Blues across two seasons since then but scored just six goals and 17 points while continuing to struggle with injuries. If he stays with an NHL organization, he’ll be settling for a two-way deal on the open market. Europe is also a strong possibility for the 6-foot-6, 25-year-old center.

The Blues also acquired Samorukov in a swap, getting him in exchange for Klim Kostin from the Edmonton Oilers at the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign. He appeared in just two games for the Blues and took a step back defensively in the minors after the trade, posting just 20 points in 69 games for Springfield and a +1 rating after besting both those paces the year prior in the Oilers organization. A return to Russia could be in the cards for him.

West Notes: Toews, Keller, Brown

As the Chicago Blackhawks get set to welcome the new face of their franchise, Connor Bedard, at the draft later this month, they’re also preparing to say goodbye to the face of their most successful era in franchise history: Jonathan Toews. As we have previously covered, Toews is expected to make an announcement in the next few weeks regarding whether he’ll be retiring on choosing another team to sign with, and given Toews’ recent health issues it would be no surprise to see the Selke and Conn Smythe Trophy winner hang up his skates.

But if he does choose to continue playing, he could go the way of another famous Blackhawk, Duncan Keith, and choose to play for the Edmonton Oilers. Sportsnet’s Mark Spector connects Toews to the Oilers, writing that “there is some talk” in Edmonton about signing Toews to be the team’s fourth-line center, allowing recent signing Derek Ryan to take a preferred role as a right winger. In scoring 15 goals and 31 points this past season Toews showed he was still very much a valuable NHL player, but the main question for Edmonton would be availability and cost. Regardless, it seems should Toews continue his career the Oilers could be a team interested in acquiring him.

Some other notes from the Western Conference:

  • While the Arizona Coyotes rebuild will continue into the future and the team will likely be open to hearing trade offers for its established players, the player teams are likely to be most interested in is also the one seemingly least likely to be traded. Bally Sports Midwest’s Andy Strickland reports that the Coyotes aren’t “looking to move” star forward Clayton Keller and that they don’t have “any real interest” in parting with their franchise face. Keller, 24, continued his breakout season from 2021-22 into this campaign, finishing with 37 goals and 86 points in 82 games. He’s signed to a bargain $7.15MM AAV deal through the 2027-28 season, and according to Strickland’s report he’s unlikely to be on the move anytime soon.
  • One player who is going to be on the move is St. Louis Blues center Logan Brown. Eligible to become a restricted free agent, Strickland reports that Brown won’t receive a qualifying offer from the Blues and will therefore become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the new league year. The 25-year-old 2016 11th-overall pick didn’t quite take the step forward in St. Louis that many might have hoped he would, and while he remains an effective AHLer he hasn’t found a way to leverage his combination of size and skill to reliably make an impact at the NHL level. With his time in St. Louis coming to an end, he’ll hit the open market where there will likely be some teams interested in seeing what their staff can do with Brown’s skillset.

Central Notes: Brown, Ehlers, Meyers

When St. Louis picked up Logan Brown in 2021, the hope was that a change of scenery could help get the 2016 first-round pick going.  However, he has managed just six goals in 69 games since the swap and has been a frequent healthy scratch.  Accordingly, Matthew DeFranks of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wonders if the Blues will even bother tendering the 25-year-old a qualifying offer this summer.  He’s arbitration-eligible and while his offensive numbers aren’t great, he could still ask for a bit more than the minimum in a hearing which might be more than they can realistically afford with a likely tight salary cap situation coming in 2023-24.

More from the Central:

  • The Jets are hopeful that winger Nikolaj Ehlers will be available for today’s third game against Vegas, relays Scott Billeck of the Winnipeg Sun. Ehlers, who last weekend declared that he expected to be ready to start the playoffs, hasn’t suited up in the first two games of the series.  He’d be a welcome addition to Winnipeg’s lineup as, when healthy, Ehlers was certainly productive this season, collecting 38 points in 45 games despite averaging a career-low 15:39 per contest.
  • The Avalanche have recalled center Ben Meyers from AHL Colorado, per the AHL’s transactions log. The 24-year-old played in Tuesday’s series opener against Seattle but didn’t suit up two nights later, resulting in his assignment to the Eagles, one that turned out to be a very quick one.  Meyers played in 39 games with the Avs this season, picking up four goals but was much more productive in the minors with 24 points in 30 games.

St. Louis Blues Reassign Nikita Alexandrov

The St. Louis Blues have made a couple of roster moves today, starting with the loan of Nikita Alexandrov to the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds. Room on the NHL roster was needed for Logan Brown, who has been activated from injured reserve.

The Blues are expected to get Torey Krug back relatively soon, as head coach Craig Berube told Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the injured defenseman is getting close to a return. The same goes for several other injured Blues players, meaning roster space is going to be hard to find.

Alexandrov, 22, has played in 16 games for the Blues this season, scoring four points. The second-round pick from 2019 has been strong for the Thunderbirds, scoring 11 goals in 22 games, and should eventually find himself back in the NHL.

Brown, 24, hasn’t played since December, and even when he does get into the lineup it’s only for a few shifts. In his nine appearances, he’s averaging just over nine minutes of ice time and has generated just five shots on goal. The dreams of the 6’6″ center becoming an impact player at the NHL level may be gone, but after watching Tage Thompson excel in Buffalo, Blues fans may want to give him a few more cracks.

Matthew DeFranks of the Post-Dispatch tweets that Brown was practicing as an extra today, but given that Vladimir Tarasenko isn’t expected to play tomorrow, those lines might be reconstructed.

St. Louis Blues Activate Logan Brown

The St. Louis Blues have activated forward Logan Brown off injured reserve, according to The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford.

St. Louis acquired Brown before the 2021-22 season, making a one-for-one exchange with the Ottawa Senators for Zachary Sanford. Brown, the 11th overall selection in 2016, has 11 points in 44 games in St. Louis since the trade.

Brown missed more than a month with an upper-body injury, leaving a game on November 8. He has suited up just five times in 2022-23, averaging under 10 minutes per game, and is without a point.

He’ll compete with players like Alexey Toropchenko and Nathan Walker to get back into the lineup, who’ve similarly not produced much offense in extremely limited ice time.
