Seth Griffith Signs Two-Year AHL Contract With Bakersfield

May 22, 2024 at 8:01 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Veteran winger Seth Griffith has long been a productive scorer in the minors which made him highly sought after in free agency which has allowed him to land sizable guaranteed salaries even on a two-way deal.  However, that won’t be a concern this time around as AHL Bakersfield announced that they’ve signed the pending UFA to a two-year AHL agreement.

The 31-year-old had been on an NHL contract with the Oilers for each of the last four seasons.  However, that didn’t result in much action at the top level as Griffith played just once for Edmonton back in 2020-21 after making 79 appearances with four different teams over the previous six years.

Accordingly, rather than look for a two-way offer somewhere without much hope of seeing NHL action, Griffith is sticking around where he’s comfortable while giving Edmonton some extra flexibility on the contract front as they won’t have to have him count against their 50-contract limit.  Of course, Griffith will technically remain an NHL free agent and could sign elsewhere but an agreement like this makes that outcome unlike.  The Oilers will be able to convert him to an NHL deal down the road if they so desire.

This season, Griffith was one of the top point producers in the AHL once again, tallying 15 goals and 48 assists in 68 games for the Condors to lead his team in scoring for the sixth time in his career.  He has 572 points in 619 regular season games at that level and will be adding to those totals for a little while longer.

Waivers: 10/03/23

October 4, 2023 at 1:09 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 2 Comments

Oct. 4: All players have cleared waivers, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. This means a pair of rather highly-touted Senators, Bernard-Docker and Sokolov, will remain with the organization.

Oct. 3: Following a large list of players hitting the waiver wire this time yesterday, today’s list is quite a bit smaller, but there is some solid talent that could potentially be claimed by a different organization. Today’s full list of players hitting the waiver wire comes courtesy of TSN’s Chris Johnston:

Minor News and Notes: Griffith, Bruins, Puljujarvi

March 12, 2023 at 10:34 am CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

After a three-goal and four-point performance in the Bakersfield Condors 6-2 victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Saturday night, Seth Griffith became the 100th player to record 500 points in the American Hockey League. Over the past ten seasons, Griffith has quietly been one of the most productive and consistent forwards in the AHL, scoring 77 points during the 2015-16 season with the Providence Bruins, and scoring an even 80 points last year.

Aside from his dominance in the AHL, Griffith has only played in 80 total games at the NHL level, scoring eight goals and 11 assists. His last action in the NHL came last year, when he played one game with the Edmonton Oilers, getting just over five minutes of play. After being drafted in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins, Griffith has cultivated a great career in the minors, cementing himself in the history books of the AHL.

Other notes:

  • With a 3-2 victory against the Detroit Red Wings yesterday afternoon, the Boston Bruins have officially clinched a playoff spot, becoming the first team this year to do so. Through 64 games this season, the Bruins are on pace for a 64-12-6 record, which would break the split record of wins (62) shared by the Red Wings and the Tampa Bay Lightning, as well as the points record (132) set by the Montreal Canadiens. Continuing the most dominant season by any team in NHL history, the Bruins will now look to clinch their division, conference, and finally the President’s Trophy.
  • Since being acquired from the Edmonton Oilers on February 28th, Jesse Puljujarvi finally made his Carolina Hurricanes’ debut during their 4-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights last night. Playing on a line with Stefan Noesen and Paul Stastny, Puljujarvi received just under 13 minutes of ice time, recording three shots on goal. As the Hurricanes continue to stave off the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers as the top team in the Metropolitan Division, expect Puljujarvi to continue to be slowly introduced into more important moments for Carolina.

Edmonton Oilers Extend Seth Griffith

March 3, 2022 at 1:06 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

After issuing several contracts to minor league talent yesterday, the Edmonton Oilers have locked up another big part of their Bakersfield Condors roster. Seth Griffith has signed a two-year, two-way contract extension, that will keep him in the organization through the 2023-24 season. As reported by PuckPedia late last night, the financial terms are as follows:

2022-23: $750,000 NHL salary, $450,000 AHL salary
2023-24: $775,000 NHL salary, $450,000 AHL salary

Griffith, 29, has been a top minor league contributor for years, and is having a career year this season for Bakersfield. In 40 games he has scored 20 goals and 52 points, good enough for fourth (tied) in league scoring. He still hasn’t made an impact at the NHL level–playing in just a single game this season–but Griffith is a huge part of the success that the Condors have experienced and will now represent a potential minor league All-Star addition for two more years.

While this won’t help the Oilers directly, there has been a big push to make sure that the minor league affiliates are successful enough to help prospects develop in a winning environment. The Condors were the best team in the AHL’s shortened 2020-21 season and are having another strong campaign, going 22-13-9 so far, good enough for third place in the Pacific Division by points percentage.

Griffith joins Dmitri Samorukov, James Hamblin, and Vincent Desharnais as players who have signed recent contracts with the team, while Alex Stalock was also sent out of town last night. It’s been a busy stretch for Oilers GM Ken Holland and AGM Keith Gretzky, who also serves as the GM of the Condors.

Oilers Place Duncan Keith In COVID Protocol

December 17, 2021 at 7:50 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

It turns out that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins isn’t the only notable Oilers player to enter COVID protocol today as the team announced that defenseman Duncan Keith has also been placed there.  That triggered a series of moves with Kris Russell being transferred to LTIR retroactive to December 9th, Markus Niemelainen was moved to injured reserve, and Cooper Marody and Seth Griffith were recalled from Bakersfield of the AHL.

Keith is in his first season with Edmonton and it has been a relatively quiet one.  He had just come back from an upper-body injury that caused him to miss seven games and he has been fairly quiet offensively with just five points in 20 games although he is still logging a little over 20 minutes a night in a top-four role.

Between his placement in protocol and Niemelainen (who has averaged 14 minutes a game in his first seven NHL contests) moving to IR, they’re down to just five defensemen on the active roster which makes it a bit puzzling that two forwards were brought up.  However, both Griffith and Marody have been productive with the Condors this season as they sit first and second respectively in team scoring.  Edmonton has had secondary scoring issues pretty much all season long and it appears those two will get a chance to try to contribute.

To make that happen from a cap perspective, Russell had to be shifted to LTIR, giving Edmonton the cap space to afford to bring two players up from the minors instead of just one.  He had been listed as questionable to play in Tuesday’s game but now will miss 10 games and 24 days, pushing his return into January at the earliest.  Given that designation from earlier this week though, he could be ready to return as soon as that time is up.

Winnipeg Jets Re-Sign J.C. Lipon

June 6, 2019 at 12:07 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Like with Seth Griffith earlier today, the Winnipeg Jets have re-signed a minor league forward. J.C. Lipon has agreed to terms with the Jets on a one-year, two-way contract worth $700K at the NHL level. Lipon was scheduled to become a Group VI unrestricted free agent this summer after failing to get much of an NHL opportunity with the Jets so far in his career.

Lipon, 25, was originally selected in the third round of the 2013 draft after an impressive finish to his junior career. The winger ended up with 112 points and 135 penalty minutes that season for the Kamloops Blazers, mixing physicality and offense to make him a dangerous opponent. That mix continued in the minor leagues the next season when the overage Lipon jumped right into professional hockey, recording 42 points and 136 penalty minutes for the St. John’s IceCaps of the AHL. That kind of versatility has continued throughout his career, but with only nine games in the NHL so far the Jets have obviously not believed it can be sustained at the highest level.

Still, Lipon is an important part of the Manitoba Moose and has worn an “A” as alternate captain for the past three seasons. He’ll be back in the AHL most likely in 2019-20, unless the Jets find themselves struggling to fill the fourth line after their upcoming cap crunch. At the very worst, he’ll provide some depth for the team in case of injury.

Winnipeg Jets Re-Sign Seth Griffith

June 6, 2019 at 9:38 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Though news of the deal came out late last night, the Winnipeg Jets have now officially announced the new contract for minor league forward Seth Griffith. Griffith has agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract which will pay him $700K at the NHL level. The 26-year old forward was set to become a Group VI unrestricted free agent this summer.

Griffith has bounced around the league since being selected in the fifth round seven years ago, playing for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres and now Winnipeg Jets. During that time he has barely seen any NHL action, suiting up 79 times—interestingly just a single game below the Group VI threshold. Part of the reason that opportunity has been difficult to find is Griffith’s skill set, as he is an offensive player that can produce on the powerplay and doesn’t fit in quite well in a checking role.

In the minor leagues, that offensive role has suited Griffith just fine. Through 318 AHL contests the undersized forward has registered 300 points, including a 57-point season for the Manitoba Moose in 2018-19. That’s likely the role he’ll return to next season, though he’ll have to clear waivers at the start of the year in order to be assigned to the minor leagues.
