Avalanche Recall Riley Tufte

8:41 p.m.: Depth winger Logan O’Connor is out of the lineup tonight, per Meghan Angley of DNVR Sports. That could pave the way for Tufte to enter the lineup against Vancouver.

8:24 p.m.: The Colorado Avalanche have once again summoned winger Riley Tufte from the AHL’s Colorado Eagles, per a team announcement Wednesday night.

This is Tufte’s fifth recall of the campaign after he cleared waivers on October 9. The rather massive 6-foot-6, 220-pound Minnesotan has made three NHL appearances in 2023-24, recording a -3 rating, five shots on goal and no points in 11:56 of average ice time.

A 2016 first-round pick of the Dallas Stars, Tufte is finally showing massive offensive capabilities in the minors as he begins his fifth professional season. The 25-year-old leads the Eagles in goals (nine), assists (eight) and points (17) while posting a +7 rating in 12 contests.

Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland signed Tufte to a one-year, two-way deal last July worth $775K in the NHL and $375K in the AHL. After reaching unrestricted free agency via Group VI status last summer, Tufte will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights at the end of the season. Per CapFriendly, his qualifying offer is $813,750.

It’s unclear whether Tufte will play in tonight’s contest against the Canucks. He’s losing his grip on a potential roster spot to Joel Kiviranta, who just recently signed an NHL deal with the Avalanche after joining the team on a professional tryout in training camp and beginning 2023-24 on an AHL deal with the Eagles. Kiviranta, also a former Dallas Star, has four points through his first four games with Colorado.

Keeping Tufte on the roster longer than necessary does inch him closer to requiring waivers once again to return to the Eagles. Players can stay on the NHL roster for up to ten games played or 30 days after clearing waivers before needing to clear a second time. Tufte has been on the Avalanche roster for a total of 11 days since clearing waivers in October after today’s recall.

11/12: Riley Tufte has been re-assigned to the Colorado Eagles of the AHL.

11/11: Colorado finds itself down a pair of forwards for tonight’s game against St. Louis as head coach Jared Bednar told reporters including NHL.com’s Ryan Boulding that forwards Artturi Lehkonen and Andrew Cogliano are both out of the lineup.  Lehkonen is expected to miss several weeks with an upper-body injury while Cogliano is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.  In a corresponding move, the team announced (Twitter links) the recall of forward Riley Tufte and defenseman Caleb Jones from AHL Colorado.

Lehkonen suffered the injury after crashing head-first into the boards on Thursday against Seattle.  That said, Bednar clarified that the upper-body issue that the 28-year-old has is not a head injury.

Last season, Lehkonen put up career highs across the board in his first full season with the Avs, notching 21 goals and 30 assists in 64 games while seeing his playing time surpass the 20-minute-a-night mark for the first time.  His numbers are down a bit this year but he still has been an important part of their top six, picking up three goals and five helpers in a dozen contests while logging 18:30 per contest.  There is no firm timeline for how long he will be out for.

As for Cogliano, the 36-year-old has been a regular on Colorado’s fourth line this season and is their second-most used forward on the penalty kill behind Logan O’Connor.  He has three assists in 11 games so far after missing the season opener as he finished recovering from two fractured vertebrae in his neck that occurred during the playoffs last spring.

Jones, meanwhile, signed with Carolina during the offseason but after clearing waivers and being loaned to AHL Colorado, the Avs acquired his NHL rights last month.  This will be his second recall of the season although he didn’t see any action during his first one.  The 26-year-old has 213 career NHL appearances under his belt and has six assists in a dozen games with the Eagles so far this season.

The Avalanche had two open roster spots following Tufte’s paper demotion to the minors yesterday so no corresponding moves needed to be made to add him or Jones onto the active roster.  Speculatively, Lehkonen will likely be heading for injured reserve at some point which would open up another spot on the roster.

The Colorado Avalanche recalled left wing Riley Tufte from the AHL’s Colorado Eagles Thursday, a team announcement states.

Tufte, 25, could draw into the lineup if Fredrik Olofsson, who is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, cannot play in tonight’s game against the Seattle Kraken. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound winger is now on his third recall to the Avs’ roster this season after clearing waivers at the end of training camp.

Signed to a one-year, two-way deal carrying a minimum salary guarantee of $425K shortly after free agency opened last summer, Tufte has made one appearance with the Avalanche in 2023-24, coming on November 1 against the St. Louis Blues. He was held off the scoresheet but did register four shots on goal, leading the team despite skating just 11:28.

However, it has been a banner start to the year in the minors for the 2016 first-round pick of the Dallas Stars. Drafted as a power winger, Tufte had never been able to find his full scoring potential in the Lone Star State, putting up solid (but never impressive) point totals with the AHL’s Texas Stars.

However, that’s changed this season. Tufte leads the Eagles in scoring with nine goals and 12 points in nine games, recording a +5 rating.

Tufte projects to be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights when the season ends. He can stay on the NHL roster for 22 more days (or nine games played) until he needs waivers to return to the Eagles again.

Nov. 2: Tufte and Jones were returned to AHL Colorado this morning, per an announcement from the Avs. Jones has yet to make his Avalanche debut, while Tufte logged 11:28 in last night’s win over the Blues, recording a -1 rating, four shots on goal and one hit.

Oct. 31: The Colorado Avalanche have recalled forward Riley Tufte and defenseman Caleb Jones. Both players have started the season with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles, where Tufte has scored six goals and eight points in six games and Jones has scored four points in eight games.

With this recall, Jones gets the chance to earn a roster spot on his third NHL team. If he does, this season will become his sixth in the NHL. Jones was originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2015 NHL Draft, earning his NHL debut three years later in the 2018-19 season. He became a solid member of the Oilers blue line in 2019-20, playing in 43 games and scoring nine points in his rookie year. He stayed for one more season in Edmonton, before getting coupled with a second-round pick and sent to the Chicago Blackhawks, in exchange for Duncan Keith and Tim Soderlund. Jones played his most NHL hockey while with the Hawks, combining for 124 games and 31 points for the club over two seasons. But he’s now struggling to find an NHL roster spot, earning a minor league assignment with Colorado to start the 2022-23 season.

Tufte’s scoring has been very impressive through the early season, as he’s currently tied for third in goals in the AHL despite playing fewer games than anyone else in the top 10. He’s received 13 NHL games between the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, scoring his first NHL goal but failing to net any other points. Tufte joined Colorado via free agency this summer, signing a one-year, $775K contract that he’ll look to earn with this NHL recall.

Colorado Avalanche Place Pavel Francouz On LTIR, Recall Two

The Colorado Avalanche have placed backup netminder Pavel Francouz on long-term injured reserve, providing the necessary cap space for the club to recall two players: forward Riley Tufte and netminder Justus Annunen.

Francouz remains out dealing with a long-term injury, and the Avalanche have been proactive in shoring up their backup goalie job in his absence. The club claimed former Arizona Coyotes netminder Ivan Prosvetov off of waivers yesterday, and now appear to be setting up for Annunen and Prosvetov to compete for starts behind starter Alexandar Georgiev.

Tufte, like Prosvetov, found himself on season-opening waivers although he ended up unclaimed. That allowed the Avalanche to temporarily stash the 2016 first-round pick in the AHL before returning him to the NHL today.

Tufte is a hulking six-foot-six winger whose offense never quite developed as hoped, though he did score 19 goals in the AHL last season. He’s slated to grapple for a bottom-six role in head coach Jared Bednar’s lineup this season.

Oct. 9: Four players on this list were claimed today: A.J. Greer (Calgary), John Ludvig (Pittsburgh), Ivan Prosvetov (Colorado), and Lassi Thomson (Ottawa). All others have cleared and are expected to be assigned to their team’s respective AHL affiliates, aside from Boyd, who PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan reports remains on the Coyotes’ active roster for now.

Oct. 8: It’s expected to be a busy day on the waiver wire, as NHL teams are making their final adjustments to the roster they’ll bring into the start of the 2023-24 season. There have already been numerous notable names exposed to the waiver wire thus far this preseason, and that list could only expand today. All players from yesterday’s waiver wire have cleared.

The big surprise here out of Arizona regards Boyd. The versatile 30-year-old veteran doesn’t have an exorbitant contract (just $1.75MM through the end of the season) and has scored 69 points across the last two seasons.

He’s been something of a breakout player for the Coyotes as his 17-goal, 35-point 2022-23 was far and away his best season in his career, so it’s definitely a surprise to see him exposed on waivers.

For Anaheim, the move to waive Stalock likely means that Lukáš Dostál has won the Ducks’ backup goalie job behind John Gibson, as should Stalock clear the Ducks will have the option to send him down to the AHL’s San Diego Gulls.

In Edmonton, it comes as a little bit of a surprise to see Lavioe waived. The 23-year-old power forward was drafted just outside of the 2019 first round, and took a real step forward in his development last season. He became a genuinely impactful AHLer, scoring 25 goals and 45 points. He’s a name to watch in terms of players with the potential to be claimed out of this group.

Anderson-Dolan finally made the NHL on an extended basis last season, and scored 12 points in 46 games. He even got some playoff action under his belt, but seeing as he was a near-point-per-game scorer in his last season in the AHL, it seems the Kings could prefer to have him start the season with the AHL’s Ontario Reign.

Rosen appears the likeliest candidate from the Blues’ group of waived players to be of interest to other teams, as he’s owed just a $762.5k cap hit this season and impressed in 49 games of NHL action last season. He scored 18 points in that span and could interest teams in need of some additional defensive help.

Out of Tampa is Bogosian, and it’s reported that the Lightning are hoping to put the veteran blueliner in a position to land on another team where he can play a bigger role than he’d be offered in Tampa. The 33-year-old won a Stanley Cup for the Lightning and it seems that the organization is looking to do right by the player while also turning to other options to staff their defense.

One of the biggest names on waivers comes out of Toronto, as Jones played in 48 games last season but now finds himself exposed to 31 other clubs. With an $875k cap hit, the veteran netminder could end up claimed by teams in need of instant goaltending support, such as the Lightning who don’t have much depth after the injury to superstar Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Avalanche Signs Five Players To Two-Way Deals

Earlier today, Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland indicated that there were “a few depth deals in the hopper”.  Those deals are now in place as the team announced the signings of defensemen Jack Ahcan and Corey Schueneman, forward Riley Tufte and Chris Wagner, and goaltender Arvid Holm to two-way contracts.  Ahcan’s deal is a two-year agreement while the other four are one-year pacts.  Financial deals for most of the deals aren’t yet known but PuckPedia reports (Twitter link) that Schueneman’s deal is for $775K in the NHL, $400K in the minors, and has a guarantee of $450K. CapFriendly later reported Tufte’s deal is worth $775K in the NHL and $375K in the minors, with $425K guaranteed.

Speaking of Schueneman, he comes over to Colorado after spending the past three seasons in Montreal’s system.  Last season, the 27-year-old spent the bulk of the year with AHL Laval, picking up 23 points in 62 games.  He also got into seven games with the Canadiens, tallying an assist.  Schueneman did play in 24 games with Montreal in 2021-22 while logging over 16 minutes per game.  As a result, he’s likely to position himself to be one of the top recalls from the Eagles next season and could push for the seventh spot on the back end in training camp.

As for Ahcan, the 26-year-old picked up 36 points in 68 games with AHL Providence last season, good for second on their team among blueliners.  He has nine career NHL appearances under his belt with Boston between 2020-21 and 2021-22.  He also could push to be in the mix to be an early recall from the Eagles in 2023-24.

Up front, Tufte spent most of last year with AHL Texas, recording 19 goals and 16 assists in 63 games.  The 25-year-old also got into three games with Dallas, logging just under eight minutes per game.  Tufte has a total of 13 NHL appearances under his belt with one goal to his name.  The 6’6 winger figures to be a recall option for a fourth line spot at some point next season.

As for Wagner, the 32-year-old has spent the last five seasons in Boston’s organization with a good chunk of that time coming at the NHL level.  However, over the past two seasons, Wagner has mostly been relegated to time in the minors.  Last season, he had 19 goals and 12 assists in 62 games with Providence.  For his career, the veteran has 63 points and over 1,000 hits in 360 career NHL appearances.  While he has spent most of the last two years in the minors, at least part of that was for cap reasons as he carried a $1.35MM AAV on his last deal.  Now being at or close to the minimum, Wagner could push for a spot on the fourth line in training camp.

Holm, meanwhile, has yet to see any NHL action and has spent the past two seasons with Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate in Manitoba.  The 24-year-old had a successful season in 2022-23 with the Moose, recording a 2.67 GAA along with a .911 SV% in 35 games but was non-tendered yesterday by the Jets.  He’ll likely serve as the backup to Justus Annunen with the Eagles next season.

Dallas Stars Announce Seven More Black Aces

Dallas Stars radio announcer Bruce LeVine tweeted this afternoon that the club has announced seven more Black Aces that will join the club for the remainder of their playoff run. The Stars already announced this morning that they would be recalling Mavrik Bourque and Rhett Gardner from the Texas Stars, now they will have seven additional teammates joining them with the big club. Texas was eliminated from the AHL playoffs this past Sunday night by the Milwaukee Admirals.

Joining the Stars from the AHL will be forwards Oskar Back, Matej Blumel, Marián Studenič, and Riley Tufte. Defensemen Alexander Petrovic, and Ryan Shea will also join the fray, as well as goaltender Matt Murray. The Black Aces generally don’t dress for games; however, they do stay ready for action just in case. They will also practice with the club as well as soaking in the experience of being around the NHL playoff atmosphere.

The addition of Petrovic is an interesting coincidence given that in the 2017 Vegas Golden Nights expansion draft the Florida Panthers gift wrapped Jonathan Marchessault along with Reilly Smith to Vegas so they could protect Petrovic and three other defensemen. Marchessault has gone on to become the Golden Knights all-time scoring leader while Petrovic struggled to stay in the NHL and has spent the past four seasons in the AHL.

These Black Aces could have a short stay with the big club as Dallas can be eliminated as early as this evening should they drop game 4 to the Golden Knights.

Dallas Stars Loan Riley Tufte To AHL

The Dallas Stars returned forward Riley Tufte to their AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars, the team said in a release today.

Dallas summoned Tufte from the minors following Joe Pavelski’s injury in Game 1, giving him some time on the NHL roster during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Head coach Peter DeBoer didn’t insert Tufte into the lineup over the course of four games, however. With Pavelski’s health improving, Dallas has opted to return Tufte to the minors.

The move comes at a natural time for the Stars organization as well. With the Texas Stars finishing high enough in the Central Division to earn a bye past the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs, the AHL Stars begin their playoff run on Friday against the Rockford IceHogs. Tufte will be an important middle-six presence for Texas in the playoffs, contributing 35 points in 63 games this season and finishing second among Texas forwards with a +23 rating.

Time is ticking away on the NHL future for the 25-year-old Minnesota native, especially given his first-round billing, but he does play a bruising, power-forward game that translates well enough to Dallas’ bottom six in call-up situations. If Dallas’ season lasts longer than their affiliate, expect Tufte to once again be recalled as part of a complement of Black Aces.

Dallas Stars Recall Riley Tufte

The Dallas Stars recalled left winger Riley Tufte from the AHL’s Texas Stars on Wednesday, the team said in a release.

This is the second recall of the season for the 25-year-old after playing three games with Dallas in December 2022. Drafted 25th overall in 2016, Tufte has never replicated the offensive potential he showed in high school through four seasons in Texas. However, he is enjoying a career year in the minors, recording 19 goals and 16 assists for 35 points with a +23 rating in 63 games.

Tufte comes up to the active roster with Joe Pavelski’s status for Game 2 of their First Round series against the Minnesota Wild in doubt. Pavelski exited the team’s Game 1 overtime loss after a hit from Wild defender Matt Dumba, which caused Pavelski to fall to the ice with head contact.

With the series taking an expected physical turn, Tufte could draw into the lineup ahead of Dallas’ extra forwards, Joel Kiviranta and Fredrik Olofsson. While Tufte has some goal-scoring upside, he is a power forward first and foremost and plays an extremely physical game, standing at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds.

Tufte does not have any NHL playoff experience and only 13 games of regular-season experience. He registered his first NHL goal last season in a 10-game stint.
