Jets Sign Riley Nash

The Jets have added some veteran depth down the middle as they announced that they’ve signed Riley Nash to a one-year contract.  The one-way deal is worth the league minimum salary of $750K.

Nash split last season between the Blue Jackets and Maple Leafs.  He suited up in 37 regular season games – all with Columbus – picking up just two goals and five assists while winning 49.7% of his faceoffs and averaging 12:46 per game.  It looked like his season had come to an end in early April after suffering a knee injury.  However, Toronto flipped a 2022 seventh-rounder to acquire him, transferring him to LTIR in the process to expand their LTIR pool.  He was able to return for the playoffs although he only suited up in two of their seven games in their first-round loss to Montreal.

The Jets saw several veteran role players head elsewhere in free agency with Trevor Lewis going to Calgary, Nate Thompson signing in Philadelphia, and Mathieu Perreault inking a deal in Montreal and Nash will serve as a replacement for Thompson and should anchor their fourth line.  With 578 career NHL games under his belt, he’ll serve as a veteran penalty killer and will allow David Gustafsson to have a bit more time with AHL Manitoba before making the jump to the NHL on a full-time basis.

Sportsnet’s Ken Wiebe was the first to report that Nash was signing with the Jets.

North Notes: Canucks Front Office, Campbell, Nash, Philp

There could be some changes in Vancouver this offseason in regards to the team’s front office. At least that’s what The Province’s Patrick Johnston states. The scribe writes that several names are surfacing if owner Francesco Aquilini is ready to make changes.

One name that Johnston writes about is Geoff Courtnall, who could serve as a middle man between ownership and the general manager. Despite the lack of NHL experience since retiring in 2000, he has expressed an interest in getting involved with hockey management and is quite familiar with Aquilini.

The scribe adds that there is a legitimate chance that Vancouver may be looking to replace Jim Benning as well. He makes several suggestions of candidates who could replace Benning, including recently fired ex-Rangers GM Jeff Gorton, Toronto assistant GM Laurence Gilman, Colorado’s assistant GM Chris MacFarland and possibly Scott Mellanby.

  • Sticking with the Canucks, The Athletic’s Thomas Drance reports that forward Elias Pettersson will not play Sunday or any of the remaining three games of the season, shutting him down for the season. Pettersson, who has been out since March 2 with an upper-body injury, has 10 goals and 21 points in just 26 games this season.
  • Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said that the team will go with Jack Campbell as their No. 1 goaltender to start the playoffs over veteran Frederik Andersen, according to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston. Campbell likely deserves the nod after performing well this season, especially recently. Campbell finished the regular season with a 2.15 GAA and a .921 save percentage in 22 appearances. Keefe also said the team intends to put Riley Nash into the lineup immediately now that he’s been activated off LTIR (via Hockey News’ David Alter). Acquired for a seventh-round pick just before the trade deadline, the center has not played a game with Toronto yet. “We’re gonna get him involved right away and just rely upon the fact that he’s very smart player very experienced guy, and in the NHL and the playoffs in particular, trust that he’s going to fit right in.”
  • The Calgary Flames announced that forward Luke Philp was injured in practice Sunday and will miss the team’s final three games of the regular season. Philp had yet to make his NHL debut and was likely to get a chance in one of the team’s next three games, but will now have to wait until next season for another chance. Philp had eight goals and 17 points in 30 AHL games this season.

North Notes: Tkachuk, Batherson, Sandin, Oilers, Danault

Senators winger Brady Tkachuk is leaning towards declining an invitation to play for Team USA at the upcoming World Championships, suggests Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch.  While he would undoubtedly be a key player for them, he is a pending restricted free agent, something that he acknowledged could be a factor in him taking a pass if he goes that route:

I haven’t made a full decision yet but it’s always an honour to represent your country and play for the guys who paved the way and USA Hockey. We’ll have to see but it’s definitely a different set of circumstances here, especially with the things going on this summer.

Tkachuk isn’t the only one leaning towards taking a pass for that reason either as Garrioch adds that winger Drake Batherson is doubtful to suit up for Canada with his restricted free agency on the horizon.  While Tkachuk is expected to land a substantial raise this summer no matter what, Batherson’s case is a bit murkier as while he has played well this year with 33 points in 53 games, it’s his only full NHL season thus far.

  • Maple Leafs defenseman Rasmus Sandin isn’t expected to play in Toronto’s remaining three games for salary cap reasons, notes Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston. By moving him back to the taxi squad, they would create enough cap room in order to activate Riley Nash from LTIR, allowing him to potentially get a game or two in before the end of the regular season to get him ready for the playoffs.  Nash was ruled out for the rest of the year while in Columbus but Toronto’s schedule runs nearly a week longer as a result of the COVID-related postponements.
  • While the Oilers look to be set in second place in the North, don’t expect them to rest anyone down the stretch, relays Postmedia’s Rob Tychkowski. Instead, head coach Dave Tippett wants to try to create some momentum over their final four games, something that could be more difficult with players rotating in and out of the lineup.
  • Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme told reporters today, including Sportsnet’s Eric Engels (Twitter link), that center Phillip Danault has been diagnosed with a concussion. He had previously been listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.  He had already been ruled out for tonight’s game against Toronto but with that diagnosis, he will likely miss the final two games against Edmonton as well.

Usually, when a pending free agent moves at the trade deadline, it’s away from a struggling team to chase the Stanley Cup with a contender. In Alexander Barabanov’s case, it was the exact opposite, going from the division-leading Toronto Maple Leafs to the sub-.500 San Jose Sharks. That move has proven to be a great one for the 26-year-old forward though as he is finally getting a chance in the NHL and has two points in two games to show for it.

When Barabanov’s entry-level deal expires at the end of this season he will be an unrestricted free agent, but perhaps he has found his next home already. Kevin Kurz of The Athletic examined Barabanov’s start with the Sharks and spoke to his agent Dan Milstein of Gold Star Hockey, who explained that “if there was a decent offer for one year, big-boy contract [from the Sharks], I would be for it.” 

  • Jaromir Jagr has helped Kladno climb back to the top tier in the Czech Republic again after being relegated for last season. The ageless wonder is not only the majority owner of the team but also played for them again this season, scoring nine points in 15 playoff games. Jagr, 49, was helped by some NHL friends including Tomas Plekanec, who led the postseason in scoring and is expected to return for Kladno next year. Even Jagr hinted that his playing career isn’t done just yet.
  • Riley Nash was spotted by reporters including Mark Masters of TSN today, skating for the first time since being acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the deadline. The checking center could potentially return from his knee sprain in time for the playoffs, which Toronto clinched last night with a win over the Montreal Canadiens. Nash is currently on long-term injured reserve but with no salary cap issues in the postseason, could be inserted into the playoff lineup whenever healthy.

Boone Jenner Undergoes Surgery

The Columbus Blue Jackets have lost another forward and another potential trade chip. Boone Jenner has undergone surgery to repair a broken finger and will miss approximately six weeks. That effectively ends his season, unless the Blue Jackets make a run down the stretch and creep into a playoff spot in the Central Division.

Jenner, who has one year remaining on his contract and carries a cap hit of $3.75MM, could have been an interesting trade chip if the Blue Jackets decided to sell at the upcoming deadline. He’s the second name that is now out of that conversation after Riley Nash was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury yesterday.

While Nash was perhaps more likely to get dealt given he is on an expiring contract, Jenner is a more important player to the Blue Jackets, playing 18 minutes a night as the team’s most reliable center. He has just eight goals and 17 points this season, a far cry from the 30-goal performance he registered as a 22-year-old in 2014-15, but sees more short-handed ice time than any other player on the team and is also a contributor on the powerplay. Even if he hasn’t been exceptionally effective, taking a piece that involved out of the lineup certainly won’t help the Blue Jackets as they look to go on that stretch run.

It is still possible that a team could acquire Jenner for next season, but more than likely this means he’ll remain with Columbus through Monday’s deadline.

2007 NHL Draft Take Two: Twenty-First Overall Pick

Hindsight is an amazing thing, and allows us to look back and wonder “what could have been.”  Though perfection is attempted, scouting and draft selection is far from an exact science and sometimes, it doesn’t work out the way teams – or players – intended.  For every Patrick Kane, there is a Patrik Stefan.

We’re looking back at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and asking how it would shake out knowing what we do now.  Will the first round remain the same, or will some late-round picks jump up to the top of the board?

Officially the biggest jump of this exercise so far, Bonino moves up over 150 spots into the first round. Originally selected by the San Jose Sharks in the sixth round, the Pittsburgh Penguins are a fitting landing spot for the two-way center. In 2007 Bonino was fresh off a high school season in which he scored 66 points in 26 games and was already committed to Boston University. A “serial winner” to steal a phrase from Mike Babcock, the young forward has found success at basically every level. A state champion as a high school player, Bonino then the BU Terriers to an NCAA National Championship game in 2009 only to set up one goal and score another in the final minute to force overtime. His squad would take home the title, and Bonino would turn pro a year later.

Though his professional career started in the Anaheim Ducks organization, the Penguins are the team likely most associated with Bonino, given his success there. In both seasons he spent in Pittsburgh, the team would take home the Stanley Cup. The first run in 2016 made a star out of the checking center when he was part of the famed “HBK Line” with Carl Hagelin and Phil Kessel. Bonino would record 18 points in 24 postseason games for the Penguins that year.

Now in Nashville, Bonino is still a reliable middle-six option that can contribute offensively while being responsible in his own end. He sits 18th among all players from the 2007 draft in scoring with 248 points in 560 games, and certainly deserves a spot in the first round.

After Pittsburgh selected, the Edmonton Oilers were up for the third time in the first round. They had already picked Sam Gagner and Alex Plante, two players that haven’t yet made it onto our list. Instead of taking the American power forward Max Pacioretty that Montreal would snap up next, Edmonton decided to go with one from a little closer to home. Alberta-born Riley Nash would be their third pick of the first round, selected 21st overall. The BCHL forward was ranked 64th among North American skaters by by NHL Central Scouting, but had just dominated his junior league to the tune of 84 points in 55 games. Unfortunately, Nash would never play for the Oilers.

Despite trading up to get him at No. 21, the Oilers and Nash never saw eye-to-eye on the next step in his development and after three years at Cornell University, the team finally decided to move on. Edmonton traded his rights to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a second-round pick (which turned into Martin Marincin), only to see him leave college and sign an entry-level deal a month later. In Carolina he turned into a relatively underrated depth forward, and broke out in 2017-18 with the Boston Bruins to the tune of 15 goals and 41 points.

Though Nash never did turn into a top-end player, getting basically nothing for the pick is an unfortunate outcome for Edmonton. If they had another shot at it they would clearly pick someone else, but with the amount of talent off our redraft board who would go instead? With the twenty-first pick of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, who should the Edmonton Oilers select?  Cast your vote below!

Blue Jackets Notes: Panarin, Bobrovsky, Nash

Even in a relatively quiet summer for the Blue Jackets, in which the team has only added Riley Nash as a bona fide piece of their roster and taken fliers on Anthony Duclair, Adam Clendening, and Ryan MacInnis, Columbus has nevertheless been one of the more talked-about teams this off-season. With two of the biggest potential 2019 free agents currently employed as well as the most prominent remaining 2018 free agent possibly considering a comeback, the Blue Jackets could still make headlines before the season begins. The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline addresses these issues and more in his latest article:

  • Portzline writes that there is no traction on extensions for either Artemi Panarin or Sergei Bobrovsky as they enter the final year of their respective contracts. The duo will almost certainly enter the season without a new deal, as has been expected for Panarin, and where things go from there remains unclear. It has already been noted that the team is not actively in talks with Bobrovsky, and that could partly be due to Portzline’s assertion that he is looking for “Carey Price money”; the Canadiens’ star goaltender signed an eight-year, $84MM extension last summer. However, given the almost immediate regret felt by Montreal over that contract, the Blue Jackets may be content to ride the season out with Bobrovsky and see whether his performance and health dictate similar terms. Although Bobrovsky is an elite goaltender, he would share next summer’s market with Pekka Rinne, Mike Smith, Semyon Varlamov, Cam Talbot, Jimmy Howard, and more and may land his biggest payday if he sticks with Columbus.
  • Meanwhile, Portzline also adds that the likelihood of a Panarin trade prior to the season is as equally unlikely as an extension. Despite talks all off-season long, it seems like no offers got past what he describes as the “futures” stage, while the contender-quality Blue Jackets would prefer immediate help in any Paranin deal. A trade could still happen at some point during the season, and even seems likely, but it won’t be anytime soon. Panarin has not even supplied GM Jarmo Kekalainen with his list of preferred destinations yet. Although, Portzline suggests the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and Florida Panthers could top that hypothetical list, while Panarin was previously linked to the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks.
  • Portzline also writes that the team has stayed in contact with Rick Nash throughout this off-season and even made an offer soon after the market opened. They have also had face-to-face meetings with the former Blue Jackets superstar about returning to Columbus. While Nash asked teams for space this summer as he decides on his playing future, being careful to consider his mounting injuries, if he does choose to keep playing it would be for a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. The Blue Jackets and Boston Bruins continue to be the most likely destinations.

Bruins Expect Bergeron, Krug, And Carlo To Be Ready For Camp

By the time the Boston Bruins exited the postseason in early May after a Game Five loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference semifinals, they were in rough shape. Defensemen Brandon Carlo and Torey Krug had both already been lost to broken ankles, David Backes, Riley Nash, and Rick Nash were all dealing with concussion symptoms, Zdeno Chara and Jake DeBrusk had both been playing through shoulder injuries, and Brad Marchand and Noel Acciari were working with groin issues. Soon after, it was revealed that Patrice Bergeron had been dealing with a recurring groin injury all year. This did not come as much of a surprise, considering that Bergeron has missed the beginning of each of the past two seasons due to groin ailments. However, Bergeron finally decided to go under the knife and his early June surgery date and subsequent recovery put his health at the start of the 2018-19 season in some doubt. Between Bergeron and barrage of other Bruins injuries, it seemed like a long shot that the team would begin the new campaign at full health.

Head coach Bruce Cassidy says not to fear, as he expects his team to be ready to go not only be ready for the season opener, but also the start of training camp. Cassidy recently spoke with Matt Porter of the Boston Globe and reassured fans that everyone is doing well in their recoveries and on track to start the year at full strength. Gone are both Riley and Rick Nash, but the numerous other injured Bruins are in good shape. Porter writes that DeBrusk, Acciari, and Backes are fully recovered from their issues and doesn’t even make note of Chara and Marchand, as the two superstars appear to be more than ready for the season. Cassidy even went so far as to say that Carlo and Krug would definitely be ready for camp. Despite each suffering a severe injury, a broken ankle, Cassidy states that they are already back skating and working towards game readiness.

Cassidy went a little further in depth with Bergeron, who he certainly would like to avoid having miss any time to begin the season for a third straight year. Cassidy says that Bergeron’s recovery is going well and he at least expects him “in uniform” if not participating fully when training camp starts. Cassidy did cast some doubt over Bergeron’s preseason usage. Especially given that team opens their tuneup schedule ahead of the rest of the league with a two-game series with the Calgary Flames, there’s little reason to rush the two-way ace into action. Cassidy expects that Bergeron will miss some preseason action but trusts that the veteran will “play [as much] as he needs”. Regardless of the preaseason workload, Cassidy expects Bergeron – and the rest of the team – to be ready to go when they square off with the defending champion Washington Capitals in the season opener on October 3rd.
