Philadelphia Flyers Sign Louis Belpedio

June 24, 2023 at 5:25 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

This isn’t the Philadelphia Flyers news you were looking for. The team announced today they’ve re-signed defenseman Louis Belpedio to a two-year, two-way contract worth $1.55MM, earning him a league-minimum $775K cap hit per season.

The 27-year-old is a minor-league-only option at this point in his career, although he’s qualified enough to hold a top-four spot on almost any team in the AHL. His 2022-23 season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms saw him record eight goals, 19 assists, and 27 points in 70 games, finishing second among Phantoms defenders in assists and points behind Ronald Attard. It came on the heels of a career-high 30 points recorded in 2021-22 with the Laval Rocket – he was on a one-year, two-way deal with the Montreal Canadiens at that time. Four of his eight goals this season were also game-winners, good enough to put him in a tie for first among all AHL defenders.

A third-round pick of the Minnesota Wild in 2014, Belpedio recorded just four NHL appearances with the Wild before he entered Group VI unrestricted free agency in 2021. He hasn’t gotten an NHL chance since in stints with Montreal and Philadelphia.

As of now, he’s the oldest and most veteran defender slated for AHL time in the Flyers organization. He’ll be tasked with mentoring players such as Attard, Emil Andrae, Adam Ginning, and Helge Grans.

Philadelphia Flyers Loan Louis Belpedio To AHL

October 25, 2022 at 1:26 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

With the Philadelphia Flyers at home through the weekend and Rasmus Ristolainen back on the ice today at practice, Louis Belpedio has been loaned back to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL. Even with James van Riemsdyk’s injury news earlier today, the team has decided to open up the extra roster spot with Ristolainen and Owen Tippett close to returning.

Belpedio, 26, didn’t actually play in a game for the Flyers, despite being recalled over a week ago. The AHL standout, who mixes offensive upside with physicality (even from a relatively small frame), is the prototypical quad-A player – one that is excellent in the minor leagues but can’t lock down a full-time role in the bigs. He has just four NHL games in his career so far.

The Phantoms will be happy, though, after going 2-1-1 through their first four games of the season. Belpedio should give them another weapon on defense to go along with the likes of Ronnie Attard and Cam York. The Flyers meanwhile will be down to six roster defensemen until Ristolainen is activated.

Rasmus Ristolainen Moved To Injured Reserve

October 17, 2022 at 10:39 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The Philadelphia Flyers are 2-0 and they have only allowed four goals on the year. They’ve been able to do that without highly-paid defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, who is dealing with an undisclosed injury suffered late in camp. Today, they have moved Ristolainen to injured reserve and recalled Zack MacEwen and Louis Belpedio, meaning they’ll have to keep playing without the big Finn for the next little while.

Given that the IR placement is retroactive, Ristolainen can come back basically at any point. But moving him off the roster at least suggests that he’s going to miss some more time.

Many fans of the team will be excited about the move, given it brings back tough guy MacEwen, who became a favorite last season when he was racking up 110 penalty minutes in 75 games. The 26-year-old forward gives the team another player who can skate and throw huge hits, while dropping the gloves whenever necessary.

Belpedio, meanwhile, gives the team another defensive option, though the group has looked pretty good so far. The 26-year-old has played in just four games at the NHL level in the past but is a strong two-way presence in the minor leagues and is coming off an impressive Calder Cup playoff run with the Laval Rocket.

Waivers: 10/05/22

October 5, 2022 at 1:08 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Another large group of players finds themselves on waivers today, hoping to get picked up by an NHL roster. The AHL awaits most that clear, though placement on the wire doesn’t necessarily indicate assignment to the minor leagues. Some players will clear just to give their team a little more roster flexibility over the next few weeks. Everyone from yesterday has cleared, and waivers today include:

Carolina Hurricanes

Ryan Dzingel
Maxime Lajoie
Lane Pederson
Stelio Mattheos
Mackenzie MacEachern

Minnesota Wild

Brandon Baddock

New York Islanders

Dennis Cholowski
Cory Schneider
Parker Wotherspoon
Hudson Fasching
Arnaud Durandeau
Cole Bardreau
Andy Andreoff

Philadelphia Flyers

Adam Brooks
Max Willman
Louis Belpedio

Philadelphia Flyers Sign Five Players

July 13, 2022 at 5:45 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The Philadelphia Flyers have announced five depth signings, including Cooper Marody, whose name emerged earlier today. The others are Troy Grosenick, Louis Belpedio, Kevin Connauton, and Adam Brooks. The five have signed the following contracts:

  • Brooks: Two-year, two-way contract, $762.5K AAV
  • Marody: Two-year, two-way contract, $762.5K AAV
  • Connauton: Two-year, two-way contract, $762.5K AAV
  • Belpedio: One-year, two-way contract, $750K
  • Grosenick: One-year, one-way contract, $750K

These deals certainly won’t excite many Flyers fans, who have struggled to see the plan from general manager Chuck Fletcher this offseason. They do represent some big moves for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms though, as each one has had plenty of minor league success.

The most interesting one is Grosenick, given Ivan Fedotov’s situation in Russia and the lack of many other goaltending options in the Flyers’ system. Felix Sandstrom is the odds-on favorite for the backup role, but Grosenick’s one-way deal is an interesting twist. The 32-year-old netminder has been outstanding in the minor leagues for the last several seasons, and will now be making that $750K no matter where he plays. If Sandstrom falters at all, perhaps Grosenick will be asked to take over the NHL role behind Carter Hart at some point.

Montreal Canadiens Add Two More To COVID Protocol

December 30, 2021 at 3:05 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

Welcome to Montreal, you’re going into the COVID protocol. The Montreal Canadiens have announced that Louis Belpedio and Gianni Fairbrother have both entered the protocol, just two days after they were recalled from the AHL.

Belpedio and Fairbrother join Paul Byron, Laurent Dauphin, Mike Hoffman, Artturi Lehkonen, Tyler Toffoli, Ben Chiarot, Joel Edmundson, Jeff Petry, Chris Wideman, Jake Allen, and Cayden Primeau in the protocol.

The Canadiens are still currently scheduled to take on the Carolina Hurricanes tonight, despite Montreal’s drastically impaired roster. The team is missing 13 skaters due to COVID (Lehkonen is skating but not yet activated) and another half dozen to injury.

Players like Rafael Harvey-Pinard, Lukas Vejdemo, and Corey Schueneman all made their season debuts on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning, a game that was actually one of the more competitive matches from the Canadiens all season.

It continues to be a nightmarish season for Montreal, who are now 7-21-4 on the year.

Minnesota Wild Sign Louis Belpedio

October 22, 2020 at 4:15 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Minnesota Wild have signed Louis Belpedio to a one-year two-way, contract, according to PuckPedia. The deal will be worth $700K in the NHL.

Belpedio, 24, was the team’s final restricted free agent to sign (save for Brennan Menell, who signed in the KHL). He was also arbitration-eligible but chose not to file, signing this deal

As PuckPedia notes, Belpedio is a likely candidate for Group VI unrestricted free agency in 2021 as he would need to play in 77 NHL games this season to avoid the designation. While the depth defenseman is a useful player to keep in the organization, it’s hard to see him becoming (and remaining) a regular in 2020-21.

Instead, it is much more likely that he serves as an extra defenseman or is sent to the minor leagues where he has spent each of the last two seasons. In 62 games with the Iowa Wild this year, he recorded 20 points and 102 penalty minutes.

Minnesota Wild Issues Qualifying Offers

October 7, 2020 at 1:49 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Minnesota Wild have issued qualifying offers to Louis Belpedio, Jordan Greenway, Kaapo Kahkonen and Brennan Menell, keeping them in the organization. Stepan Falkovky, Mat Robson and Hunter Warner all went unqualified, meaning they will become unrestricted free agents on Friday.

The only real surprise in the group is Robson, who was a sought after goaltending prospect out of the University of Minnesota a year ago. After a relatively successful first year in pro hockey, Robson won’t be re-signed by the Wild and instead will have to look for another opportunity elsewhere.

Of course, the Iowa Wild could potentially bring Robson back on an AHL deal, but the 24-year-old netminder can wait to see if there are any NHL offers on Friday.

Free Agent Focus: Minnesota Wild

June 24, 2019 at 8:02 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 2 Comments

Free agency opens a week from today and there are quite a few prominent players set to hit the open market, while many teams have key restricted free agents to re-sign as well. The Wild have  few UFA’s to worry about, but there are a number of young RFA’s in need of new deals with little experience in Minnesota to go off of. Here’s a closer look at their free agent situation:

Key Restricted Free Agents: F Kevin Fiala – The lone return for center Mikael Granlund at the trade deadline, Fiala arrived in Minnesota with high expectations. Will the terms of his extension reflect that? Or will the team push for a short-term “show me” deal? That’s the question facing the former Nashville Predators top prospect, the No. 11 overall pick in 2014. Although he has 223 NHL games to his credit, Fiala played in only 19 games with the Wild and contributed just seven points. With that said, he still totaled 39 points on the year and had 48 points the season prior. Fiala is not eligible for salary arbitration yet, so does not have that added leverage, but on a long-term extension he could make a fair case for an AAV of $5MM+. A bridge deal would keep that number lower until Fiala can prove that his numbers in Nashville can be replicated in Minnesota.

F Ryan Donato – Like Fiala, Donato landed in Minnesota with much fan fare, both as the core return for Charlie Coyle and as a decorated and talked-about rookie. While Donato had struggled early on in the season with the Boston Bruins, recording nine points in 34 games and frequently being exposed defensively, he excelled right away with the Wild, adding 16 points in 22 games. While that level of production might be a lofty expectation moving forward, the team is certainly excited to have Donato and could be looking into a long-term deal. With only 68 career games played though, Donato’s value is not as high as it would be after a full NHL season and his camp will probably settle for a one- or two-year deal with a low salary number to allow him to prove his worth in time for a new contract. Donato does have arbitration rights, but it would be a surprise if he files.

F Joel Eriksson Ek – While Eriksson Ek played in 17 fewer games this season than last, he scored at a higher per-game clip, saw more ice time, and improved his defensive play. At 22, Eriksson Ek is still growing, but his production thus far leaves a lot to be desired from a recent first-round pick. Through 148 NHL games over three seasons with the Wild, Eriksson Ek has just 37 points and still has yet to really carve out an identifiable role. Minnesota won’t quit on him just yet, but they may try to sign him to his one-year, $874K qualifying offer to see if one more year helps to clarify his long-term fit and potential.

Other RFAs: F Pontus Aberg, D Louie Belpedio, D Michael Kapla, F Chase Lang, F Dante Salituro, D Carson Soucy, F Nico Sturm, D Hunter Warner

Key Unrestricted Free Agents: F Eric Fehr – The veteran Fehr did well for himself last season, returning to relevance after many had written him off following uninspiring stops in Pittsburgh, Toronto, and San Jose over the few years prior. Fehr signed a one-year, $1MM contract with the Wild last summer and proved to be a good value, recording 15 points and playing an important defensive role up front. The 33-year-old played in 72 games and, despite pedestrian minutes, still managed to finish second among all Minnesota forwards in blocked shots and sixth in takeaways. Fehr was a reliable penalty killer and an asset at the face-off dot, especially considering his team-leading 68% defensive zone starts. Age hasn’t affected Fehr’s size and defensive instincts, so he will be valued as a veteran fourth line option on the market. Still, after other recent stints did not work out so well, one has to think that Fehr may be willing to stick at or near his current price point to remain in Minnesota, where he has the best chance of continuing to play his game at the highest level.

D Nate Prosser – After Prosser failed to find a role in Minnesota last year, heading down to AHL Iowa with just 15 games and no points to show for his season to date, some wondered if he would ever end up back in the NHL. Yet, Prosser took full advantage of his minor league opportunity, recording eight points in 31 games but more importantly playing a shutdown role and showing leadership on the ice en route to a deep playoff run. The Athletic’s Michael Russo reports that the showing has done Prosser some good, as the 33-year-old has drawn “lots of attention” from prospective suitors. The only time in his career that Prosser strayed from Minnesota – a brief and failed stint with the St. Louis Blues – he wound up back with the Wild that same year. It’s fair to assume that he’ll entertain other offers this off-season though, as Minnesota already has seven defenders signed to one-way deals next season and Prosser’s opportunity to make an impact will likely be greater elsewhere.

Other UFAs: D Anthony Bitetto, F Landon Ferraro, G Andrew Hammond, F Cal O’Reilly, F Matt Read

Projected Cap Space: The Wild are in good shape financially, close to $20MM below the salary cap ceiling of $81.5MM and only Fiala among the free agents listed who could command a salary that will eat into that total very much. With that said, GM Paul Fenton and company will still need to be wise with their extensions to maximize the space they can use to explore the market and improve a roster that is going through a major overhaul.

Minor Transactions: 01/18/19

January 18, 2019 at 12:55 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Seven games are on tap for tonight across the NHL, including a prime time matchup between the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals. The Islanders are trying to prove all of their doubters wrong and continue to compete in the Metropolitan Division, while the Capitals are ready to contend for their second Stanley Cup. As teams prepare for tonight’s action, we’ll keep track of all the movement around the league.

  • The Nashville Predators have placed Zac Rinaldo on injured reserve, though the physical forward hasn’t played since the beginning of the month. Rinaldo has actually played 23 games for the Predators this year, more than many expected when he signed a one-year two-way deal in the summer.
  • The New York Rangers have flipped backup goaltenders once again, sending Alexandar Georgiev to the Hartford Wolf Pack and recalling Marek Mazanec. The team has been making these moves all season in order to keep their backups fresh, and the two will likely be flipped back within a few days.
  • The Minnesota Wild have recalled defenseman Louis Belpedio from Iowa of the AHL.  With Mathew Dumba on IR, Minnesota has been running with six defenders for the last little while.  Belpedio has 10 points in 40 minor league games this season and has two assists in his lone career NHL contest.
  • The Dallas Stars have brought back winger Denis Gurianov from AHL Texas.  The 21-year-old impressed in an 11-game stint earlier this season and has been quite productive in the minors with 31 points in 29 games.  Dallas has scored just three goals in the last four games so they’ll likely be hoping that Gurianov can help give them a lift offensively.
