Flyers Place Tyson Foerster On IR, Recall Emil Andrae

According to a team announcement, the Philadelphia Flyers have placed forward Tyson Foerster on the injured reserve, retroactive to November 1st. Philadelphia has recalled defenseman Emil Andrae from the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms in a corresponding roster move.

Despite eventually returning to the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Foerster’s lower-body injury is from blocking a shot from Auston Matthews. He missed yesterday’s game against the Calgary Flames and won’t be eligible to return on November 12th against the Edmonton Oilers.

The Flyers have already felt the impact of Foerster’s absence. Although the team is 6-4-0 in their last 10 games, they have lost two straight. Foerster, along with his linemates Noah Cates and Bobby Brink, has been the best forward unit for Philadelphia this year. The fourth-year winger has scored four goals and seven points in 11 games, averaging 18:18 of ice time per contest.

Replacing Foerster in the lineup, although indirectly, will be Andrae. The former second-round pick has already skated in two games for the Flyers this year, going scoreless. In fact, earlier in October, a report from Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff indicated that Philadelphia may actually look to trade Andrae at some point this season.

Unfortunately, the Flyers’ schedule won’t get any easier without Foerster. The team will match up against the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators in his absence, both of whom sit ahead of Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference standings. Still, despite being in last place, the Flyers are only one point removed from a Wild Card spot, highlighting how important the next month will be for playoff positioning.

Flyers Recall Jacob Gaucher, Reassign Emil Andrae

Sunday: Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet confirmed the reasoning behind Andrae’s reassignment is roster management more than anything else, relays PHLY Sports’ Charlie O’Connor.

Tocchet said that with the uncertainty surrounding Couturier’s readiness to play, the Flyers needed additional forward reinforcement, and in order to bring up Gaucher, Andrae needed to be reassigned. Tocchet did note that he believes Andrae will be back on the NHL roster in short order.

Couturier is managing an upper-body injury and missed the Flyers’ loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs yesterday. The 2019-20 Selke Trophy winner has gotten off to a strong start to his 2025-26 campaign, scoring nine points in 10 games while winning nearly 55% of his draws and playing a big role in what has thus far been the league’s second-best penalty kill.

Friday: The Flyers announced they’ve recalled forward Jacob Gaucher from the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms and returned defenseman Emil Andrae to Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.

Gaucher comes up amid an injury concern for captain Sean Couturier, who left Thursday’s win over the Predators in the first period with an undisclosed injury sustained while blocking a shot. There hasn’t been an update on his status yet. However, sending Andrae down as the corresponding move for Gaucher’s recall, rather than placing Couturier on injured reserve, suggests there’s optimism that his absence won’t be more than day-to-day.

The 24-year-old Gaucher is in his fourth professional season, all of which have come in the Flyers organization. Undrafted, he’s made the climb all the way up from ECHL regular to NHL call-up option. He signed with Lehigh Valley out of juniors in 2022 but spent his first season entirely on loan to the ECHL’s Reading Royals. He was a training camp standout in 2024 and, after getting off to a hot start with the Phantoms last year, received his first NHL contract in December and his first call-up in February. He made four appearances for the Flyers before being sent back down, going without a point and averaging just 7:21 of ice time per game. However, he impressed in the faceoff dot (10-for-15) and managed two blocks and four hits.

Gaucher checks in at 6’4″ and 225 lbs and can play both center and right wing. He’s off to a slow start this season with Lehigh Valley with just one goal and one assist through eight games, but he’s coming off a 20-goal season in 2024-25. The Flyers are only carrying 13 healthy forwards with Couturier’s injury, so there’s a decent chance Gaucher, who has utility down the middle, makes his season debut on Saturday against the Maple Leafs in a familiar fourth-line role. The organization hopes the confidence from an NHL call-up can help jumpstart his production when he’s inevitably returned to the minors.

Andrae’s demotion is a product of his waiver-exempt status more than anything else. The 2020 second-rounder has been ferried between Philly and Lehigh Valley twice this season now, but has averaged just 12:44 of ice time in two NHL appearances. The 23-year-old Swede is continuing to pressure the Flyers to give him more minutes with strong minor-league performances, which include five assists and a +4 rating in six showings for the Phantoms this year. In the interim, his demotion means more opportunities for Adam Ginning and Egor Zamula, who have rotated in as the club’s sixth defenseman.

Flyers Recall Emil Andrae

The Philadelphia Flyers have recalled defenseman Emil Andrae. He should step back into a role on the team’s third pair, after scoring three points in his last four AHL games. Andrae is tied for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms’ scoring lead with five assists in six games.

Andrae has once again found consistent scoring in the minor-leagues. Including his seven appearances in the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs, he has effectively recorded 11 assists in his last 13 games in the AHL. It’s a welcomed boost to his stat line, after he only recorded one assist through 14 AHL games in March of this year. The newfound confidence has directly impacted Andrae’s ability to recover loose pucks, and turn them into fastbreaks.

But Andrae hasn’t yet discovered that ability at the NHL level. He played through his rookie NHL season last year, but only managed seven points, 16 penalty minutes, and a minus-five through 42 games. The lack of production has earned Andrae a mere 17 minutes of ice time, on average, through 47 career appearances in the NHL. He’s an undersized, but strong, puck-mover who could stand to offer power-play upside one day, though that’d sit on the other side of an NHL breakout.

For now, Andrae will step into a rotation with Egor Zamula and Noah Juulsen for NHL minutes. Both players have recorded one assist on the season – Zamula through five games, and Juulsen through eight. Given his recent flash in the AHL, a measly one-assist standing should be surmountable for Andrae. A hot performance in his next NHL appearance could be enough to leapfrog Zamula on the depth chart – though repeated struggles could land him back in the AHL sooner rather than later.

Philadelphia Flyers To Reassign Emil Andrae

Emil Andrae’s recent recall to the Philadelphia Flyers has ended after one game. Jackie Spiegel of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Andrae’s name is no longer listed on the Flyers roster on the NHL media site, which means he has been reassigned to the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms. 

Without a corresponding roster move, the move all but guarantees a return for defenseman Cameron York, which was reported on yesterday. The only item left on Philadelphia’s to-do list would be to activate York from their injured reserve, which will likely happen tomorrow.

Although his one-game recall won’t make a lasting impression on the Flyers’ front office, it likely won’t be Andrae’s last time in the NHL this season. He skated in 10:22 of Philadelphia’s win over the Florida Panthers on Monday, earning an 87.5% CorsiFor% at even strength.

Given that he’s on his entry-level contract, and thus exempt from waivers, Andrae is an easy choice for a readily available depth option. He skated in 42 games for the Flyers last year, scoring one goal and seven points while averaging 17:21 of ice time. His possession metrics were relatively positive, a rare quality for Philadelphia last year, though his defensive metrics left much to be desired.

His play with AHL Lehigh Valley indicates that there’s another level to his offensive game. Since debuting for the Phantoms in 2022-23, Andrae has scored 10 goals and 56 points in 97 games, becoming one of their most consistent blueliners over that stretch. Still, defensemen tend to take longer to develop, and Andrae is only 23 years old. Should he continue to get consistent reps in the AHL, he’ll have a better chance of cracking the Flyers roster out of training camp next season.

Flyers Recall Emil Andrae, Loan Dennis Gilbert To AHL

The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that they have called up defenseman Emil Andrae, while loaning fellow defender Dennis Gilbert to Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.

It was speculated earlier in the month that Philadelphia could look to deal Andrae, as he bounces around roles in the organization. Yet now, after two games outside the win column, the Flyers have made a move likely popular with fans, bringing up an intriguing younger player for the journeyman 28-year-old Gilbert, who has 111 NHL games under his belt, but does not quite jump out as much more than organizational depth. 

Apparently one game in the AHL was enough for Andrae, at least for now, as he notched two assists for the Phantoms. Now, the Swedish defenseman will look to take a step forward after 42 games with the Flyers last season with 7 points and a -5. 

Meanwhile, Gilbert has not appeared in the AHL since the 2022-23 season, skating in 26 games for the Calgary Wranglers. The veteran will be an immediate standout for the Phantoms, especially as they have a younger defense corps overall, and the Buffalo native will have his sights on earning another call-up to the NHL at some point. 

Flyers Open To Trading Emil Andrae

As the deadline for final rosters looms, many teams have final decisions to make, including Philadelphia, with one seat remaining at their table. Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff writes that Emil Andrae is on the outside looking in and may find himself with a new club soon. 

Andrae, originally drafted by Philadelphia in 2020 (54th overall), has flashed legitimate potential over the last three seasons with AHL Lehigh Valley, but seemingly has not made enough of an impression on new Head Coach Rick Tocchet, as well as being surpassed on the organizational depth chart. As is usually a point of emphasis for the black and orange, Andrae’s stature is a downside, at 5’9”, as the Flyers look for more size on their blueline’s bottom half, given Jamie Drysdale and Cam York’s presence. 

Di Marco noted that the Flyers’ third pairing was open coming into the season, and especially with Rasmus Ristolainen’s injury, opportunities were plentiful. One by one, certain candidates have fallen out of favor. It is thought that Dennis Gilbert and Noah Juulsen will round out the Flyers’ defense corps, beating out once-promising youngsters Helge Grans and Andrae. 

Neither Gilbert nor Juulsen are names that jump out on the page at this point, both in their late-twenties, but both bring over 100 NHL games of experience to the table. Juulsen also comes in from Vancouver, having played for Tocchet for the last three seasons. 

Adam Ginning also remains firmly in the mix for Philadelphia, despite just 11 NHL games under his belt so far, but at 6’2”, he may have the upper hand over Andrae, and makes an imposing pair with fellow sizable lefty Egor Zamula. 

Di Marco says that although there is no clear market for Andrae, and the Flyers are just “open” to making such a move, they would be likely seeking a third-round pick or a similar defensive prospect. Players in Andrae’s mold appear in the waiver wire often, especially at this time of year. Yet still being just 23, it will be interesting to see if the Flyers can recoup value for their 2020 second-round selection, or if the Sweden native will return to Lehigh Valley as a key contributor and push for another call-up.

Minor Transactions: 4/18/25

There will be several small roster moves today as playoff teams recall their required third goalie for practice and emergency backup purposes, and non-playoff teams conduct some end-of-season roster trimming. We’ll cover all those moves here:

  • The Blues announced they’ve recalled goaltender Will Cranley from ECHL Florida to serve as their emergency backup. St. Louis selected the 23-year-old in the sixth round of the 2020 draft. He was previously added to the Blues’ practice roster for a day during the 4 Nations break while Jordan Binnington was traveling back from the tournament. He finished his second professional season with a 2.71 GAA, .896 SV%, two shutouts, and an 11-9-3 record in 23 ECHL games. He also logged a .867 SV% in a pair of appearances for AHL Springfield, the first of his career.
  • The Stars added defensemen Lian Bichsel and Alexander Petrovic back to the active roster after reassigning them to AHL Texas yesterday for cap purposes. They needed the space to activate Tyler Seguin from long-term injured reserve for the final game of the regular season. They’re expected to serve as the third pairing in Game 1 of the first round against the Avalanche tomorrow, per Sam Nestler of DLLS Sports. It’ll be the postseason debut for Bichsel, Dallas’ first-round draft choice in 2022. They also recalled goaltender Ben Kraws from ECHL Idaho as their EBUG. An undrafted free agent signing out of St. Lawrence last year, the 24-year-old impressed with a 2.88 GAA, .910 SV%, five shutouts, and a 23-12-5 record in 40 games for Idaho. He also posted a 3.01 GAA and .889 SV% in three appearances for AHL Texas, logging a 2-1-0 record.
  • Serving as the Avalanche’s EBUG will be Kevin Mandolese, the team announced. The 24-year-old has spent the year as Trent Miner’s backup with AHL Colorado after being acquired from the Senators over the offseason. He has a 2.87 GAA, .903 SV%, 11-6-0 record, and one shutout in 19 games.
  • Since the Wild’s AHL affiliate is one of the few to miss the cut for the Calder Cup Playoffs, they’re going with a higher-profile option for their EBUG. Top prospect Jesper Wallstedt will fill the role for them, according to a club announcement. The 2021 first-rounder is expected to succeed the retiring Marc-André Fleury as Filip Gustavsson’s backup next season, but is coming off a disastrous injury-plagued campaign with Iowa. He finished the year with a 3.59 GAA, .879 SV%, one shutout, and a 9-14-4 record in 27 showings.
  • The Panthers summoned Evan Cormier from ECHL Savannah to be their EBUG, per George Richards of Florida Hockey Now. The 27-year-old struggled with a 3.38 GAA, .887 SV%, one shutout, and a 17-13-4 record in 36 showings in 2024-25. He filled the same duties for the Cats in the first half of last year’s playoff run, signing a two-way deal at the trade deadline for the second season in a row.
  • The Penguins returned forwards Ville Koivunen, Joona Koppanen, Vasiliy Ponomarev, Samuel Poulin, Valtteri Puustinen, and defenseman Filip Král to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after their late-season call-ups. They’ll aid the Baby Pens as they aim to capture a Calder Cup. Not joining them is top prospect Rutger McGroarty, who sustained a lower-body injury last week and isn’t yet ready to return.
  • The Flames assigned forward Sam Morton and defenseman Hunter Brzustewicz to AHL Calgary after they made their NHL debuts in last night’s regular-season finale. Morton scored his first NHL goal in the outing, while Brzustewicz impressed with a plus-two rating. They’ll join the Wranglers for the postseason.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled enforcer Ryan Reaves from the minor leagues. Reaves recently played in his first AHL games since the 2010-11 season. He recorded one goal and, surprisingly, no penalty minutes in three games of play. The 38-year-old also recorded two assists and 28 penalty minutes in 35 NHL games this season. He’ll provide a boost of muscle to the Leafs lineup as they head towards a First Round matchup against the Ottawa Senators.
  • Defenseman Emil Andrae has been reassigned to the minor leagues after holding down a routine role on the Philadelphia Flyers lineup since early March. Andrae split his time between the major and minor rosters this season, with seven points in 42 NHL games and 16 points in 25 AHL games. He was primarily a minor-leaguer last season and managed a stout 32 points, 66 penalty minutes, and minus-10 in 61 games. With the Flyers season over, Andrae will look to again support the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in a late-season push.
  • The Edmonton Oilers have recalled depth forward Derek Ryan from the minor leagues. Ryan split time between the NHL and AHL this year, with one goal and six points in 36 games in the Oilers lineup. He also managed eight points in 13 AHL games. Ryan has played in the Stanley Cup Playoffs on five different occasions, racking up 10 points in 60 games. That includes appearing in 19 games of Edmonton’s run to the Stanley Cup Finals last season. Ryan contributed one assist to the effort. He’ll now be returned to the NHL roster to support another long run.
  • The Rochester Americans are getting a wave of strong recruits, as the Buffalo Sabres have reassigned each of Jiri Kulich, Tyson Kozak, Noah Ostlund, and Isak Rosen back to the minor leagues. Rosen leads Rochester in scoring this season with 28 goals and 55 points in 60 games. Ostlund has 36 points in 44 games, while Kozak has 14 points in 31 games. Kulich has been the only of the bunch to spend the bulk of the season in the NHL. He carved out a top-six role through points of the season. Kulich finished what was his rookie NHL season with 15 goals and 24 points in 62 games.

Minor Transactions: 3/7/25

Similarly to the NHL, AHL playoff rosters are also due today before the trade deadline. Any player currently rostered in the AHL is eligible for the 2025 Calder Cup playoffs, regardless of a future call-up. Today’s list will continue to grow until the 3 p.m. deadline.

  • According to a team announcement, the Dallas Stars have reassigned defenseman Lian Bichsel to their AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars. Although the reassignment came with a formal announcement from the team, it should only serve as a paper transaction for Bichsel to ensure he’s eligible for the Calder Cup playoffs. The rookie defenseman has scored two goals and three assists in 20 games for the Stars this season, averaging 14:54 of ice time per night. He’s made his presence known by averaging over four hits a game, but he’s been on the wrong end of some highlight videos early in his NHL career. Dallas confirmed it as a paper transaction later, recalling Bichsel quickly after the deadline.
  • As alluded to yesterday, the Philadelphia Flyers have confirmed the reassignment of netminder Aleksei Kolosov to their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Given that he’s been Philadelphia’s third-string option for much of the season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Kolosov’s reassignment extend beyond the trade deadline. The second-year netminder has a 4-8-1 record in 15 games with the Flyers this season with a .870 SV% and 3.45 GAA. His performance hasn’t been any better with AHL Lehigh Valley as he’s recorded a 2-4-1 record in seven AHL contests with a .874 SV% and 3.59 GAA.
  • The Calgary Flames are making Adam Klapka available to their AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers, for the 2025 Calder Cup playoffs, per a team report. Similarly to Kolosov, this reassignment may extend through the deadline. Klapka has spent much of the year in AHL Calgary, scoring 13 goals and 25 points in 31 contests. He’s been far less utilized by the Flames, registering one goal in 13 contests and averaging 8:10 of ice time per game.
  • According to Andy Androckitis of Inside AHL Hockey, the San Jose Sharks are expected to reassign defenseman Jimmy Schuldt and Jack Thompson to their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda. As a minor contextual update, Max Miller of The Hockey News believes Thompson’s reassignment is a paper transaction to make him eligible for the AHL postseason. Despite low scoring output, Thompson has been an effective defenseman for the Sharks this season, averaging a 92.1% on-ice save percentage at even strength, the best on the team among defensemen with more than 20 games played.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets announced they’ve reassigned forward Joseph Labate to their AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters. As one of the most feel-good stories of the 2024-25 campaign, Labate took the ice in the NHL for the first time in eight years this season. The 31-year-old winger had spent the last several years bouncing around on AHL contracts with a one-year pitstop in the KHL. He scored six goals and 13 points in 33 games with AHL Cleveland before being elevated to an NHL contract with the Blue Jackets.
  • After announcing that defenseman Colton Parayko would miss the next six weeks due to a knee injury, the St. Louis Blues were expected to make a recall on defense. The team announced that recall this morning, sharing that they’ve brought up Matthew Kessel from their AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds. The Phoenix, AZ native has already spent time as a seventh defenseman for the Blues this season, tallying three assists in 27 games while averaging 13:05 of ice time per game.
  • Strictly as a paper move, Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Chicago Blackhawks have reassigned forward Colton Dach and defenseman Ethan Del Mastro to their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. Both players will remain in the Blackhawks’ lineup for the rest of the season before they are returned to AHL Rockford at the end of the season, should they qualify for the 2025 Calder Cup playoffs. Dach has scored two goals and six points in 18 games with Chicago, while Del Mastro has registered two goals and three points in 12 contests.
  • As expected, the Detroit Red Wings have placed forward Carter Mazur on injured reserve one day after his debut. Mazur suffered a dislocated elbow approximately one minute into his NHL career, and he’s likely done for the regular season. In a corresponding transaction, the Red Wings have recalled forward Dominik Shine from their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. Shine is only a couple of weeks removed from signing the first NHL contract of his career, tallying one assist in four games for Detroit in late January.
  • The Montreal Canadiens announced they’ve reassigned forward Owen Beck and goaltender Jakub Dobes to their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket, for eligibility in the Calder Cup playoffs. Beck has been an extremely effective forward for the Rocket this year, scoring 13 goals and 32 points in 47 games. Meanwhile, Dobes has made a name for himself in Montreal, managing a 6-2-1 record in 10 games with a .909 SV% and 2.63 GAA, including one shutout.
  • The Los Angeles Kings aren’t entirely sold on Brandt Clarke’s future with the team. A report from Greg Wyshynski of ESPN this morning indicated the Kings were shopping Clarke on the trade market, and they’ve now reassigned him to their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, along with Samuel Helenius (Twitter Link). Both players should be back on the NHL roster tomorrow, with the move signifying they’ll be eligible for the AHL postseason. Still, it’s a notable development as it indicates Los Angeles may want Clarke in the AHL for the Reign’s postseason run rather than their own.
  • According to a team announcement, the Carolina Hurricanes have reassigned defenseman Riley Stillman to their AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves. Stillman filled in for Dmitry Orlov in last night’s contest but didn’t make it through the full game due to getting his face cut by a skate. He finished last night’s contest against the Boston Bruins with zero points after skating in 18 seconds of the game’s action.
  • In addition to Schuldt and Thompson, Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News shares that the Sharks have reassigned defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin and forward Collin Graf to AHL San Jose. They’re both expected back on the Sharks’ roster later today or tomorrow, but the roster move will make them eligible for the AHL postseason. Mukhamadullin and Graf have both spent much of the year with the Barracuda. In short order, Pashelka reports the Sharks have recalled both players back to the NHL roster.
  • Due to another injury to netminder John Gibson on Wednesday, the Anaheim Ducks were expected to recall another goaltender. Anaheim announced they’ve recalled Ville Husso from their AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls, to fill the void left by Gibson. It’s Husso’s first call-up with the Ducks since being acquired from the Red Wings on February 24th. He posted a 1-5-2 record in nine games in Detroit this season with a .866 SV% and 3.69 GAA.
  • For the fifth time this year, the New York Rangers have assigned defenseman Chad Ruhwedel to their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. Ruhwedel has primarily played for AHL Hartford this season in his first extended stay in the AHL since 2016-17. The veteran defenseman has recorded three goals and 12 points in 36 contests with a +8 rating.
  • After a flurry of trade activity over the last couple of days, the Seattle Kraken are making a small roster move for the benefit of their AHL roster. The Kraken announced they’ve reassigned forwards Jacob Melanson and Ben Meyers to their AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, and have recalled John Hayden in a corresponding transaction. The former debuted in the NHL last night, notching four hits and one takeaway in 9:53 of ice time.
  • In a major boost to their playoff chances, the AHL’s Providence Bruins will have several players available for the 2025 Calder Cup playoffs. Mark Divver of the New England Hockey Journal reports the Boston Bruins have papered down Marat Khusnutdinov, Vinni Lettieri, Patrick Brown, Ian Mitchell, Riley Tufte, and Matthew Poitras to the AHL for their postseason eligibility. All six players are expected back on the Bruins roster by this evening or tomorrow morning.
  • As expected, the Buffalo Sabres have papered down forward Jiří Kulich to their AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans. Kulich has been an impressive player for AHL Rochester over the last few seasons and should continue to be in the postseason. He’s scored 53 goals and 94 points in 123 games on the Americans’ roster.  Later in the day, the Americans announced that forwards Isak Rosen and Joshua Dunne were recalled on an emergency basis so they won’t count toward the post-deadline limit.
  • According to a team announcement, the Edmonton Oilers have returned defenseman Cam Dineen to their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, from his emergency recall. Unlike many of the roster moves on today’s list, Dineen has a solid chance of playing the remainder of the year with AHL Bakersfield. The 26-year-old defenseman has scored five goals and 29 points in 45 games for the Condors this season while only registering one game with the Oilers.
  • In addition to recalling Emil Andrae, the Philadelphia Flyers are also making two more player recalls to their NHL roster. The team announced they’ve recalled forwards Olle Lycksell and Rodrigo Abols to the NHL roster for Saturday’s game against the Seattle Kraken. Abols has scored one goal and one assist in nine games for the Flyers this season, while Lycksell has gone scoreless in six contests.
  • The Vancouver Canucks have joined in on the mix of teams ensuring their top prospects are eligible for the AHL playoffs. They have assigned defenseman Victor Mancini, forward Jonathan Lekkerimaki, and goaltender Arturs Silovs to the AHL. Lekkerimaki has three points in 12 NHL games this season, while Mancini didn’t manage any scoring in his sole appearance with the Canucks so far. Silovs has operated as the team’s third-string goalie and has a 1-6-1 record and .858 save percentage on the year.  All three players were subsequently recalled soon after the deadline.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that they’ve recalled defenseman Jack St. Ivany from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on an emergency basis.  The 25-year-old has played in 19 games with Pittsburgh this season, recording one assist while averaging 16:22 of playing time per game.

Avalanche Acquire Erik Johnson From Flyers

The Avalanche are bringing 2022 Stanley Cup champion Erik Johnson back to Denver. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports they’re acquiring the veteran defenseman from the Flyers. Colorado sent depth winger Givani Smith to Philadelphia in return, per Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. The Flyers later made the move official, with general manager Daniel Brière saying they’ve recalled defenseman Emil Andrae from AHL Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move (via Jackie Spiegel of the Philadelphia Inquirer).

In a feel-good move by the Avalanche, Johnson returns to the organization he spent 13 years with. Since being acquired from the St. Louis Blues during the 2010-11 season, the former first overall pick of the 2006 NHL Draft scored 68 goals and 246 points in 717 games with the Avalanche, averaging 21:33 of ice time per night. His tenure in Colorado was defined by his willingness to sacrifice his body nearly every game and by his being an emotional leader for the club when they captured their third Stanley Cup ring in 2022.

Johnson is effectively the same version of the player he was when he last played for the Avalanche in 2022-23. The nearly 37-year-old was rarely deployed by the Flyers this year, scoring one goal and two assists in 22 games, averaging 13:18 of ice time per game. That’s effectively all Colorado will need out of him. Despite being a shell of the player he used to be, the Avalanche likely views Johnson as a solid leader to re-insert into the locker room and even an improvement upon Keaton Middleton in the team’s bottom-pair.

It didn’t take too much to acquire him, either. Smith has barely played in Colorado since the team acquired him in the trade that brought Mackenzie Blackwood to Denver. He’ll finish his tenure in Colorado with zero points in seven games and one assist in six AHL contests.

Meanwhile, Andrae has earned the right to play for the Flyers after a second promising season with AHL Lehigh Valley. Since transitioning to North American hockey in 2022-23, Andrae has scored 10 goals and 54 points in 96 games for the Phantoms.

He’s gotten an extended look with the Flyers, too. Due to multiple injuries on the team’s blue line, Andrae was allowed the opportunity to play in 24 games this year with Philadelphia, scoring one goal and six points, averaging 18:59 of ice time with a +2 rating. His possession and defensive metrics have been solid in limited action, giving the Flyers confidence to give him a full-time role in the NHL for the remainder of the season.

Flyers Recall Emil Andrae And Jacob Gaucher

With their newest players unavailable due to visa issues, the Flyers have brought in some extra reinforcements.  The team announced (Twitter link) that they have recalled defenseman Emil Andrae and center Jacob Gaucher from AHL Lehigh Valley.  To make room on the roster, Egor Zamula was placed on injured reserve while newcomer Andrei Kuzmenko has a non-roster designation.

Andrae has split the season between the Flyers and Phantoms.  With Philadelphia, the 22-year-old has suited up in 20 games, picking up five points along with 28 blocks and 22 hits while averaging 19:18 of playing time.  He has been a bit more productive with Lehigh Valley with nine points in 15 outings with them.  With Erik Johnson absent from practice today, it’s possible that Andrae could be counted on for Sunday’s game in Colorado.

As for Gaucher, it’s his first recall after his minor league deal was converted to an entry-level pact in December.  The 23-year-old has done well this season with the Phantoms, notching 14 goals and 13 assists in 44 games, well surpassing his rookie-year numbers in fewer games.  Gaucher’s 27 points put him in a tie for second on Lehigh Valley in scoring, two behind leader Samu Tuomaala.

As for making roster room, Kuzmenko and winger Jakob Pelletier were acquired from Calgary on Thursday.  However, both players are dealing with visa-related concerns and are not yet available to the team.  Their debuts may have to wait until Tuesday in Utah.  Zamula, meanwhile, has missed the last week with an upper-body injury.  His retroactive IR placement came on Friday, meaning he’s eligible to be activated at any time.
