Los Angeles Kings Recall Six Black Aces

April 30, 2025 at 5:00 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 7 Comments

As they look to stave off elimination in Game 6, the Los Angeles Kings announced several recalls. According to the announcement, forwards Andre Lee, Francesco Pinelli, Jack Studnicka, Taylor Ward, defenseman Caleb Jones, and netminder Pheonix Copley have been recalled as black aces.

Pinelli is the only player of the group who hasn’t debuted in the NHL yet. Although he has mild NHL experience, Studnicka did not play with the Kings during the regular season.

The remaining four all enjoyed limited playing time with Los Angeles this year. Lee appeared in the most contests, scoring one goal and two assists in 19 games while averaging 9:10 of ice time per game.

Los Angeles likely recalled players solely based on their past NHL experience. They did not promote any of the Reign’s top four point scorers (although Jeff Malott is already on the team) or the top five players with the best +/- ratings.

Still, it’s unlikely any of the six call-ups will play in Game 6 for the Kings. Entering their first elimination game of the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs, Tanner Jeannot remains the only injured member on the roster. Without any meaningful injury updates after Game 5, it’s unlikely any of today’s recalls will suit up for the Kings.

Kings Sign Andre Lee To Two-Year Extension

March 8, 2025 at 12:29 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Kings have taken care of one of their pending restricted free agents up front early.  The team announced that they’ve signed winger Andre Lee to a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2026-27 season.  The deal will carry an AAV of $775K, the league minimum salary.

The 24-year-old was a seventh-round pick of the Kings back in 2019, going 188th overall.  He has seen his first taste of NHL action this season, getting into 19 games with Los Angeles in five different stints with the big club, making him the sixth Los Angeles pick from that draft class to reach the top level.  Over that stretch, he has a goal and two assists along with 36 hits in 9:10 per night of playing time.

Lee has spent the bulk of his professional career in the minors with Ontario, one that spans parts of four seasons.  In 29 games this season, the 6’5 winger has three goals and six assists, bringing his career totals to 17 and 16 respectively across 134 contests.

This is Lee’s final season of waiver exemption so he will have to either stick with the Kings in the fall after training camp or be placed on waivers to return to the Reign in 2025-26.  He’s playing on a one-year, two-way contract this year and while the team release doesn’t specify the terms, it wouldn’t be surprising if this extension carries a one-way salary, giving Los Angeles some capable back-of-roster depth at the lowest price possible.

Kings Announce Four Roster Moves

January 4, 2025 at 3:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Kings were busy leading into their game against Tampa Bay today.  The team announced that they’ve activated winger Trevor Moore and center Trevor Lewis off injured reserve.  To make room on the roster, winger Andre Lee was assigned to AHL Ontario while defenseman Kyle Burroughs was moved to non-roster status.

Moore was moved to IR last weekend but last played on December 12th and had been sidelined with an upper-body injury since then.  The 29-year-old had a career year last season with 31 goals and 26 assists in 82 games and while he hasn’t produced at quite the same level this year, he’s still doing well with six goals and a dozen helpers in 28 outings while logging a little over 17 minutes a night.

As for Lewis, he sustained a lower-body injury on the final day of November and has been out since then.  He’s being activated for his 1,000th career game tonight.  Lewis has seven points in 25 games so far this season while chipping in with 46 hits and a 51% success rate at the faceoff dot, continuing to have success in the fourth-line role he has held for the bulk of his career.

Lee is the roster casualty up front to bring Moore and Lewis back onto the roster.  The 24-year-old has split the season between the Kings and Reign, getting his first taste of NHL playing time along the way.  Lee has played in 19 games with Los Angeles, primarily on the fourth line.  In those outings, he has a goal and two assists along with 36 hits in just over nine minutes a night.  In Ontario, he has suited up four time, collecting a goal and an assist.

Burroughs, meanwhile, is in his first season with the Kings after signing a two-year, $2.2MM deal with them last summer.  Playing time hasn’t been the easiest to come by, however, as he has been limited to just 20 games thus far out of 37.  The 29-year-old has a pair of assists, 31 hits, and 24 penalty minutes but is playing just 8:39 per game, well below his career average of 15:57 per game.  He is away from the team following the birth of his child.

Kings Recall Andre Lee From AHL

December 28, 2024 at 9:01 am CDT | by Josh Cybulski Leave a Comment

The Los Angeles Kings have recalled forward Andre Lee from the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League. Lee was sent to the AHL on December 24th, after making his first NHL appearance in December last Sunday. The 24-year-old Lee has spent the bulk of this season playing in the NHL for Los Angeles, dressing in 17 games and registering two points.

Before this year, Lee had spent his entire professional career in the AHL with the Reign. His AHL appearances have been limited this season, dressing in just four games and registering a goal and an assist. Over the course of his four-year AHL career, Lee has dressed in 109 games and tallied 15 goals and 11 assists.

The former seventh-round pick doesn’t provide much offense but is a good forechecker and can make space for his linemates. However, he isn’t overly physical given his 6’4” 205-pound frame and may need to find other ways to produce if he hopes to stick around in the NHL.

Lee spent the first month of the season in Los Angeles, but since then he has bounced back and forth between the NHL and AHL and will likely continue to do so for the remainder of this season unless he can start to produce a bit of offense in a bottom six role.

Kings Reassign Andre Lee

December 24, 2024 at 2:43 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

Dec. 24: Lee has been returned to Ontario, per a club announcement. He won’t count against the cap during their holiday break. His appearance on Sunday against the Capitals was his first during this recall, recording a shot on goal in 9:13 of ice time.

Dec. 13: The Kings made a roster move on Friday to add a bit more depth up front.  The team announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled winger Andre Lee from AHL Ontario on an emergency basis.  Mayor’s Manor reports that winger Trevor Moore’s availability for tomorrow’s game against the Rangers is in question, necessitating this move.

The 24-year-old has gotten into 16 games so far this season with Los Angeles in his first taste of NHL action.  That said, his playing time has largely been limited as he’s logging just 9:26 per game.  Offensively, Lee has been limited to recording two assists although he’s also averaging just over two hits per contest.

After spending more than a month on an NHL roster to start the season, Lee was sent down in mid-November but he has been recalled multiple times since then.  As a result, he has only played in four games with the Reign, picking up a goal and an assist after picking up 13 points in 36 games with them last season.

With the recall, the Kings are now at the maximum of 23 players on their active roster.

Evening Notes: O’Connor, Iginla, Guhle, Lee

December 5, 2024 at 8:01 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 6 Comments

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman published today’s rendition of ’32 Thoughts’ in the written medium. One of the noteworthy items is that the Pittsburgh Penguins are getting interest from around the league in forward Drew O’Connor.

O’Connor is seemingly an ideal trade candidate for the Penguins this season. He’s on a relatively cheap expiring contract with a $925K salary. His offensive production is down this season with three goals and nine points in 27 games but he can play up-and-down the lineup at all three forward positions.

The Colorado Avalanche seems like a perfect landing spot for O’Connor should Pittsburgh trade him. It’s tough to find a team dealing with more injuries this season and O’Connor’s versatility and low cost should make for a decent transition. Colorado doesn’t have much draft capital to work with so the Penguins may have to scout heavily into the Avalanche’s minor league systems.

Other notes from tonight:

  • It’ll be a short year of development for Tij Iginla. The WHL’s Kelowna Rockets announced Iginla has undergone successful hip surgery but will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 WHL season. Iginla has already skated in 21 games for the Rockets this season scoring 14 goals and 32 points with a +18 rating. Still, the Utah Hockey Club can’t be pleased that the organization’s first-ever draft pick will go most of the season without playing.
  • The Montreal Canadiens announced that defenseman Kaiden Guhle wouldn’t play tonight due to illness shortly before the team’s matchup against the Nashville Predators. Justin Barron who’s scored one goal in 12 games for Montreal this season is filling in for Guhle on the blue line. Barron has two shots, one blocked shot, and one hit through 10 minutes in tonight’s game against Nashville.
  • Per a team release from the Los Angeles Kings, Andre Lee has been papered down to the AHL’s Ontario Reign. The move is strictly to capture more salary cap space for a Kings organization with limited space. Los Angeles doesn’t play against until Saturday when they take on the Minnesota Wild and the expectation is that Lee will re-join the team for that contest.

Los Angeles Kings Recall Three Players

December 3, 2024 at 3:45 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

12/3: According to a team announcement, the Kings organization has recalled all three players back to Los Angeles as expected.

12/2: The Los Angeles Kings are trimming their roster to open up cap space with a three-day break before their next game. The organization announced they’ve reassigned Samuel Helenius, Andre Lee, and Jacob Moverare to their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign.

Lee has the most playing time of the trio with 16 games already under his belt for this season. The 188th overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft has tallied two assists on the year while operating in a fourth-line role in Los Angeles. He’s known more for his physicality than his offensive production as Lee ranks sixth on the team in hitting with 34 body checks handed out to opposing teams.

Moverare is the longest-tenured of the group as he’s entered his fifth professional season with the Kings organization. He’s suited up in 52 games for Los Angeles since the start of the 2021-22 NHL season but only has one goal and two assists to show for. The Ostersund, Sweden native has understandably performed much better in the AHL for the Reign scoring 10 goals and 71 points in 163 contests and an assist in three postseason contests.

The final member of the group heading back to the AHL is Helenius who was drafted 59th overall by the Kings in the 2021 NHL Draft and likely has the highest ceiling of the three reassignees. He’s collected two assists in nine games in Los Angeles this season while also scoring two goals and three points in eight games for AHL Ontario.

Los Angeles has four players (Arthur Kaliyev, Akil Thomas, Caleb Jones, and Darcy Kuemper), and an additional player (Drew Doughty) on the team’s long-term injured reserve. There is no indication any of the injured players will be activated before the Kings’ contest against the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night so a few if not all of the trio should be back in Los Angeles in a couple of days.

Kings Recall Andre Lee, Place Akil Thomas On IR

November 29, 2024 at 12:28 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Kings called up forward Andre Lee from AHL Ontario under emergency conditions on Friday, per a team announcement. Center Akil Thomas landed on injured reserve in a corresponding transaction to open a roster spot.

Lee, 24, returns to the NHL roster after spending most of the season with the big club. He didn’t quite crack the opening night roster but was recalled just a couple of days later, making his NHL debut and skating in 15 out of 18 contests after his recall.

The 6’5″, 206-lb winger didn’t make much of an impact offensively with two assists, but he did make his mark physically with 32 hits without being a significant drag on the Kings’ possession numbers. L.A. controlled 49.6% of shot attempts and 53.8% of expected goals with Lee on the ice at 5-on-5, perfectly serviceable stats for a fourth-line piece.

Selected in the seventh round in 2019, Lee had one assist and a +1 rating in a pair of appearances for Ontario over the past week and a half, his first pair of the season. The Karlstad, Sweden, native had a career-high eight goals and 13 points in 36 AHL games last season and signed a fresh two-way extension in June to avoid restricted free agency.

Meanwhile, Thomas lands on IR with an undisclosed ailment despite being listed as a healthy scratch for their last outing, a 4-1 win over the Jets. If he was banged up, they could make his placement retroactive to his last appearance on Nov. 25 against the Sharks, which means he’d be eligible to return next Wednesday against the Stars. He’ll miss at least two more games with the injury.

Thomas, 24, has been a frequent healthy scratch this season, only appearing in 10 of the Kings’ 23 games. He has a goal and an assist while averaging 11:07 per game. The 2018 second-round pick is fourth-worst on the team with a 50.0 CF% and has managed 14 shots on goal.

Kings Activate Alex Turcotte, Assign Andre Lee To AHL

November 16, 2024 at 1:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Kings have made a pair of roster moves in advance of their game today against Detroit.  The team announced that they’ve activated forward Alex Turcotte off injured reserve.  To make room for him on the roster, winger Andre Lee was assigned to AHL Ontario.

Turcotte was placed on IR a week ago today after sustaining an upper-body injury early in the month.  The 23-year-old is in his first full NHL season and has held his own in a limited role.  Turcotte has played in 13 games so far this season, picking up a goal and four assists while averaging just under 12 minutes a night in their bottom six.  For his career, he’s up to 45 appearances at the top level, tallying two goals and seven helpers.

As for Lee, he was an early-season recall and had been up with Los Angeles since then, spanning more than five weeks in total.  Along the way, he played a regular role in the lineup, collecting two assists and 32 hits in 15 games in 9:26 of playing time per game.  Those games were the 24-year-old’s first taste of NHL action.  Lee had eight goals and five assists in 38 games with the Reign last season, resulting in a one-year, two-way contract worth the league minimum of $775K with the Kings and $100K in the minors.

Notably, Lee’s assignment means that Samuel Helenius will remain with Los Angeles for now, at least.  He was brought up when Turcotte landed on injured reserve and it would have made sense for him to be the one who lost his spot with Turcotte returning.  Helenius has an assist, nine hits, and a 60% faceoff success rate in his first three games, earning himself a longer look in the process.

Kings Recall Andre Lee, Place Drew Doughty On LTIR

October 9, 2024 at 11:41 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Kings have recalled forward Andre Lee from the AHL’s Ontario Reign, per a team release. Los Angeles had an open roster spot but didn’t have the cap space to execute the transaction, so they’ve moved Drew Doughty to long-term injured reserve in a corresponding move. He remains month-to-month after undergoing ankle surgery last month.

Lee, 24, had a strong camp by all accounts. He’s looking to make his NHL debut tomorrow in the Kings’ season-opener against the Sabres, potentially in a fourth-line role alongside youngsters Akil Thomas and Alex Turcotte while veteran Trevor Lewis sits in the press box.

A seventh-round pick back in 2019, Lee is entering his third professional season. The 6’4″ Swede signed his entry-level contract in 2022 after three years at UMass-Lowell, where he totaled 64 points (31 G, 33 A) in 87 games. The voracious checker can play both left wing and center. While he hasn’t put up big numbers on the scoresheet since turning pro, he’s shown he can be a strong enough complementary physical player to log NHL minutes (or at least earn a brief look). He posted a career-high eight goals and five assists for 13 points in 38 games with the Reign last year, adding 23 PIMs and a +2 rating.

Lee signed a two-way extension ($775K/$100K) to remain in the Kings organization in June. He’s set to be an arbitration-eligible RFA next summer.

Meanwhile, Doughty’s LTIR placement doesn’t affect his timeline for a return. He was already expected to miss the 10 games and 24 days required for an LTIR stint.
