Lightning Recall Conor Geekie, Brandon Halverson
10:30 a.m.: The Lightning activated James off of injured reserve, per Diandra Loux of The Hockey News. The move will allow James to play in tonight’s game against Montreal.
9:15 a.m.: The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled Conor Geekie and Brandon Halverson from their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. They also announced that forwards Mitchell Chaffee, Jakob Pelletier, and defenseman Steven Santini have been reassigned to Syracuse.
The move organizes Tampa Bay’s roster in advance of the start of their first-round playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens, which is set to happen later today. Recalling Geekie and Halverson removes two key contributors from Syracuse’s roster in advance of the start of their own first-round playoff series. Syracuse’s regular season ended yesterday with a shutout win over the Belleville Senators.
Geekie was No. 2 in scoring on the Crunch with 17 goals and 59 points in 57 games this season, while Halverson was the team’s No. 1 goalie, posting a .905 save percentage in 43 games played.
Both Geekie and Halverson have NHL experience over the last two years – Geekie played in 14 NHL contests this season, scoring three points, and had 14 points in 52 NHL games last year.
Halverson, a 30-year-old veteran, has played in three NHL contests in that same time frame.
It is significantly more likely that Geekie, the No. 10 overall pick at the 2022 NHL draft, ends up skating in playoff games for the Lightning compared to Halverson. Halverson will be Tampa’s spare third goalie, behind starter Andrei Vasilevskiy and backup Jonas Johansson, who are both entrenched in their roles.
If Halverson ends up staying on the Lightning roster for the team’s postseason run, Syracuse will likely turn to 26-year-old Ryan Fanti, a former ECHL No. 1 who posted a .905 save percentage in 27 games this season as Halverson’s backup.
Geekie’s path to NHL playing time likely depends upon the health of rookie forward Dominic James. The 23-year-old has been out since February, but was beginning to make his mark in the NHL with a goal in each of his two most recent games. James suffered a leg injury in February and underwent surgery, but appears to be nearing a return to the ice.
Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times reported Friday that James skated in practice as Tampa’s fourth-line center, Geekie could get a look in that role. Veteran Pontus Holmberg could also be a contender for the No. 4 center job occupied by James in practice, but he has been out since April 6 with an upper-body injury that head coach Jon Cooper called “not good.”
The trio of reassignments return three players who play key roles in Syracuse back to the AHL. Pelletier is the Crunch’s top scorer with 77 points in 63 games this season. As an offense-first 5’10” winger with zero games of playoff experience at the NHL level, it’s likely Tampa Bay stand to benefit more with Pelletier in Syracuse rather than on their playoff roster.
Chaffee, 28, scored 57 points in 54 AHL games for the Crunch this season but had just one point in 11 games with the Lightning. He does have nine games of NHL postseason experience and could be at the top of the priority order when it comes to potential recalls should Tampa Bay run into injury trouble up front.
Santini, 31, got into 12 NHL games this season, the most he’s gotten into in a single year since 2018-19. He’s an established AHL top-four defensive defenseman and is likely to play a significant role in what the Crunch hope is a deep postseason run.

Lightning Activate Maxwell Crozier From LTIR, Place Steven Santini On Waivers
Lightning defenseman Maxwell Crozier told reporters this morning that he’s stepping back into the lineup for tonight’s regular-season finale against the Rangers (including the team’s Benjamin Pierce). He had been on long-term injured reserve since mid-February after undergoing core muscle surgery. They’ve placed defender Steven Santini on waivers in a corresponding move with the intent to send him back to AHL Syracuse tomorrow, per Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times. They’ve also recalled forwards Jakob Pelletier and Mitchell Chaffee from Syracuse to allow some forwards to get some extra rest tonight, according to Erik Erlendsson of Lightning Insider.
Crozier’s return gives the Bolts another option on defense for the first round that they weren’t expecting to have several weeks ago. When he underwent the procedure in February, the team gave him a 10-week timeline that appeared to rule him out for the regular season and at least a good chunk of the first round. Instead, he’ll come back in a little under two months’ time to essentially get a conditioning stint in a meaningless game tonight before potentially dressing for Game 1 against the Canadiens this weekend, likely contingent on the statuses of Victor Hedman (personal leave, indefinite) and Darren Raddysh (undisclosed, day-to-day).
Crozier, a 2019 fourth-round pick, also missed several games earlier in the year with an undisclosed issue. Between absences, he was well on his way to establishing himself as an everyday depth option. Turning 26 next weekend, Crozier put up a 1-9–10 scoring line in 34 games after making just 18 appearances over the previous two seasons combined. He averaged 16 minutes per night, and Tampa won his minutes handily, controlling 53.0% of shot attempts and 52.8% of expected goals at 5-on-5.
A smooth-skating option, he’ll be a natural fit as the #3 righty heading into training camp in the fall behind Raddysh and Erik Černák – if Tampa can work out an extension with the former. If not, given the dearth of high-impact options on this summer’s free agent market, Crozier might be tasked with a higher-leverage role than anticipated next season.
As for Santini, the 31-year-old has been called up as an injury replacement several times throughout the season. He hadn’t needed to clear waivers since training camp, but after playing his 10th game of the season on his most recent recall, he needs them now to head back down. In 11 appearances, his highest NHL workload since 2018-19, Santini has produced an assist and a +1 rating. He’d been a healthy scratch since March 28 and will now return to Syracuse, where he serves as team captain in his second season with the organization, to aid in their chase for a Calder Cup championship.
Pelletier and Chaffee have both been up with the Bolts relatively recently as they’ve opted to get their injury-plagued roster as much rest as possible before the postseason. Pelletier appeared in a pair of games last week before heading back to Syracuse over the weekend, while Chaffee skated in a trio of contests earlier this month. Neither recorded a point on their most recent recalls and have gone pointless across 14 combined NHL games this year.
For Pelletier, it’s one final reward for an electric minor-league performance before the former Flames first-rounder ideally snatches an NHL roster spot out of camp next fall. The 25-year-old leads the AHL with 77 points (28 goals, 49 assists) in 63 games, while Chaffee has also put up over a point per game with a 24-33–57 line in 54 outings. But while Pelletier is signed through 2027-28, Chaffee is an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Lightning Recall Mitchell Chaffee
The Lightning have recalled right winger Mitchell Chaffee from AHL Syracuse, per a team announcement Thursday.
Chaffee, who has been in Syracuse since clearing waivers in late October, will make his first NHL appearance in over five months tonight against the Penguins. He and Oliver Bjorkstrand are entering the lineup in place of Scott Sabourin and Brandon Hagel, who both sustained undisclosed injuries in Tuesday’s loss to the Canadiens but aren’t expected to miss more than a couple of games at most.
It wasn’t too long ago that Chaffee had made himself a bottom-six regular in Tampa. The 28-year-old made a career-high 66 appearances last season, notching 12 goals and six assists along the way. He was a welcome physical presence, ranking third on the team with 133 hits, and the 6’1″ righty was one of their most efficient scorers with a 17.6% shooting percentage.
Chaffee slipped down the Bolts’ depth chart after they acquired Bjorkstrand and Yanni Gourde from the Kraken at last year’s trade deadline and signed Pontus Holmberg in free agency last summer, though. Through seven games in October, he went without a point and was averaging only 9:29 of ice time per game. The Bolts opted to waive him, in part due to wanting to give Dominic James an extended look.
Since returning to a high-leverage AHL role in Syracuse, Chaffee has been spectacular. He ranks fourth on the Crunch in scoring with 24 goals and 31 assists for 55 points in 52 games.
He now projects to get another look in a fourth-line role with Nick Paul and Corey Perry while Sabourin, Hagel, and the IR-bound James all remain unavailable. He should stick around until the day-to-day Hagel and Sabourin can get back into the rotation.
These could be Chaffee’s final games for the Lightning. He’s a pending unrestricted free agent wrapping up a two-year, $1.6MM extension he signed in 2024.
Lightning Reassign Mitchell Chaffee, Scott Sabourin
Oct. 29: The Lightning announced Wednesday that they’ve reassigned Sabourin to Syracuse. With his suspension now served, he’s unlikely to see another stint on the NHL roster in the near future.
Oct. 28: The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled forward Scott Sabourin and assigned forward Mitchell Chaffee to the AHL. Chaffee cleared waivers earlier on Tuesday. Sabourin will serve the final game of a four-game suspension picked up during the preseason, making him eligible to return to the NHL lineup as soon as Thursday.
Tampa Bay has been strategic with its call-ups of Sabourin. He served his suspension gradually, over multiple call-ups, while also appearing in five games for the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch. He’s racked up two points, seven penalty minutes, and a plus-two in those appearances. It’s a relatively meager stat line for the usually-chippy Sabourin, who ranked second on the San Jose Barracuda with 111 penalty minutes in 65 games last season. He led the Barracuda with 192 PIMs in 2024 and led the Belleville Senators with 177 PIMs in 2023.
Sabourin has played in only 12 NHL games since his rookie season ended in 2020. He has two points and 25 PIMs in his limited appearances. He’s otherwise been a core piece of lineups across the AHL, offering imposing size and an old-school enforcer style. Tampa Bay could lean on that hard-nosed presence to turn around its 3-4-2 start to the season, though Sabourin would need to leapfrog Yanni Gourde or Dominic James to crack into the Lightning lineup.
Meanwhile, Chaffee will head to the minor leagues after appearing in the first seven games of Tampa Bay’s season. He recorded no scoring and 19 hits in those appearances. This move will push Chaffee towards his first AHL games since the 2023-24 season, when he posted 26 points in 36 AHL games and seven points in 30 NHL games. That scoring was enough to earn the Michigan-native a full season with the Lightning last year. He marked it with 12 goals and 18 points in 66 games, though he couldn’t keep that scoring up through this season. Chaffee has 25 points in 105 career NHL games and 89 points in 123 career AHL appearances.
Lightning Place Mitchell Chaffee On Waivers
Oct. 28: Chaffee has cleared waivers and can now be assigned to Syracuse, per Friedman.
Oct. 27: According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Tampa Bay Lightning have placed forward Mitchell Chaffee on waivers. If he clears by tomorrow, the Lightning will have more flexibility with Chaffee since he’ll be waiver exempt for the next 10 days or 30 games, or they’ll gain the ability to reassign him to the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch.
It marks the second time in Chaffee’s young career that he’s been placed on the waiver wire. Before the start of the 2023-24 campaign, the Lightning placed Chaffee on waivers after he failed to make the roster out of training camp, and he cleared without any issue.
Unlike the 2023-24 campaign, there were higher expectations for the Rockford, MI native this year. Despite being relegated to Tampa Bay’s bottom-six for most of his playing time, he finished eighth on the team in goal-scoring last year with 12 in 66 games. He was additionally one of the Lightning’s most physical forwards, finishing second up front with 133 hits.
Again in a bottom-six role, Chaffee has gone scoreless through seven contests this season, averaging 9:29 of ice time per game. He leads the team in hits by a healthy margin, but has been benched for the team’s two most recent games.
Given his play to begin the 2025-26 campaign, it’s unlikely another team will put a claim on Chaffee over the next 24 hours. Still, for teams looking for some additional scoring punch in their bottom-six (looking at you, Calgary Flames), his 15-goal pace from last season may be enticing.
Islanders Notes: Romanov, Injuries, Waivers
Stefen Rosner, New York Islanders beat reporter, shared several items on the team today. First, Rosner noted this morning that defenseman Alexander Romanov was seen in a red non-contact jersey in practice. Rosner went on to provide an update on several injuries affecting the club: Romanov will be out tomorrow but is expected to play at some point on the team’s road trip, perhaps Thursday in Carolina. Fellow defenseman Scott Mayfield, however, is expected to play tomorrow in Boston despite missing practice.
Finally, per Rosner, the team will make a gameday decision on 24-year-old rookie defenseman Marshall Warren, who was a great story over the weekend, as the Long Island native made his debut for his hometown team, posting two helpers in what was eventually a shootout loss. Although Adam Boqvist could draw back into the lineup, given Warren’s impressive debut, it will be interesting to see which way Head Coach Patrick Roy goes.
Elsewhere on the Islanders:
- The Bridgeport Islanders shared this morning that top prospect Calum Ritchie is day-to-day with a lower body injury. The 20-year-old, acquired from Colorado in the Brock Nelson deal, has scored a goal and an assist in his first two AHL games in Bridgeport. The Islanders will hope Ritchie’s ailment is not serious, as he is a contender for a call-up at some point, and could especially push pending free agent Jean-Gabriel Pageau, as the team looks to the future.
- Rosner went on to make another interesting point this afternoon, that the Islanders could be interested in claiming forward Mitchell Chaffee, who was waived earlier today by Tampa Bay. Rosner mentioned that as the club is currently down to 12 forwards, Chaffee, who has connections from the Lightning with new GM Mathieu Darche, could bring some needed depth. At 27, Chaffee is not necessarily in the mold of younger, more intriguing reclamation projects that sometimes hit the waiver wire. However, he posted 12 goals as a regular on the Lightning’s bottom six in 2024-25, and possibly, New York could have interest.
Snapshots: Merzlikins, Nurse, Atkinson, Puljujarvi
The Columbus Blue Jackets will have to stick with alternative options in net as starter Elvis Merzlikins is not expected to be healthy for the team’s season finale on Thursday per NHL.com’s Jeff Svoboda. Merzlikins has missed the last four games with an upper-body injury. He’s not far off from a return and has already returned to practice, should Columbus find a way to extend their season. To make the playoffs, the Blue Jackets will need to win their final game, and hope the Montreal Canadiens lose their finale against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Columbus has utilized red-hot goaltender Jet Greaves in the wake of Merzlikins’ injury. The 24-year-old fill-in has been stellar over his recent stretch, winning each of his last four games and recording two shutouts. In total, Greaves has posted a .975 save percentage over his last stretch. The performance has been a continuation of Greaves’ dominant season in the minor leagues, where he’s recorded a .920 save percentage in 40 appearances – sixth-highest in the NHL.
The Blue Jackets will face a tough decision should they break into the postseason. Merzlikins has a quaint .892 save percentage and 26-21-5 record on the season. That’s been enough to perform above backup Daniil Tarasov‘s .881 save percentage, but it’s hardly been enough to boost the squad’s playoff odds. With Greaves having one of the hottest gloves in the hockey world over his last four games, Columbus could opt for the youngster as they pursue their first playoff bid since 2020.

- Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse has been suspended for one game for cross-checking Los Angeles Kings forward Quinton Byfield, per an announcement from the Department of Player Safety. No details on if Byfield is injured have been released, though he was a scratch in Los Angeles’ final game of the season. Nurse will miss Edmonton’s season finale – an ultimately inconsequential game with the squad already locked into a First Round matchup with the Kings. As things stand, both Nurse and Byfield are expected to return for Game 1 of the postseason. Nurse will look to find a spark after netting 33 points in 76 games this season, while Byfield will continue his lead of the Kings’ lineup, after scoring 23 goals and 54 points in 80 games. Byfield ranks fourth on the Kings in scoring.
- The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled veteran depth forward Cam Atkinson. The move comes after fourth-line forward Mitchell Chaffee was banged up in the team’s Tuesday win over the Florida Panthers. Atkinson has been assigned to the minors on multiple occasions but hasn’t played in any AHL contests. His only hockey this season has come from 38 games in the Tampa Bay lineup, where he’s recorded nine points, eleven penalty minutes, and a minus-four. Atkinson may need to fill Chaffee’s depth role in Tampa Bay’s Thursday finale against the New York Rangers. Chaffee has 12 goals and 18 points in 66 games this season.
- Speaking of Chaffee, Florida Panthers winger Jesse Puljujarvi is set to have a DoPS hearing for an illegal check to the Lightning forward’s head on Tuesday. Puljujarvi hasn’t yet received any discipline from DoPS in his eight-year NHL career. He’s playing with his fourth NHL club in the last three years in Florida, and has one goal and 15 penalty minutes in five games. Puljujarvi earned his call-up to the Panthers lineup after recording 12 points in 20 games with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. He’ll be one of many options the team has as they enter the postseason, though any lineup role would be minimal.
Lightning Notes: Paul, Kucherov, Chaffee
Lightning center Nick Paul will be available for tonight’s home game against the Sharks after missing the last six games with an undisclosed injury, head coach Jon Cooper told Gabby Shirley of FanDuel Sports Network Florida & Sun.
Paul was listed as week-to-week late last month but never landed on injured reserve. The 29-year-old is expected to shift to the wing on a line with Brandon Hagel and Anthony Cirelli in his return to the lineup while the Bolts dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen, barring any last-minute recalls.
It was a banner start to the season for Paul, now in his third full campaign with Tampa after they acquired him from the Senators before the 2022 trade deadline. He had five goals and eight assists for 13 points through 17 games, so far shattering his previous career-best points per game rate of 0.56 set last season.
Paul has, however, been less involved physically, with 0.29 blocks per game and 1.12 hits per game compared to 0.51 and 1.27 last season. He’s now in the third year of the seven-year, $22.05MM extension he signed in 2022.

- Paul draws into the top six in part due to an undisclosed injury to star winger Nikita Kucherov, who Cooper said won’t play versus San Jose but could return against the Canucks this weekend. It’s the second game in a row that the 31-year-old will miss with the injury, which he sustained last Friday against the Predators. The five-time All-Star has 34 points in 22 contests this season, ranking fourth in the league with 1.55 points per game. The injury marks his first multi-game absence since missing three games with COVID-19 in the 2021-22 campaign.
- Cooper said the Bolts would also be without Mitchell Chaffee‘s services up front. The 26-year-old winger will miss his fourth straight game with an undisclosed injury but remains day-to-day. He’d been a quality depth piece in the early going, already recording career-highs in goals (five) and points (nine) in 20 games while averaging 13:04 per game. The Michigan native is also tied for sixth on the team with 25 hits.
Atlantic Notes: Lalonde, Matheson, Lundell, Chaffee, Gregor
Analyst Darren Dreger shared worrying news for the head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, Derek Lalonde, in yesterday’s edition of TSN’s ‘Insider Trading‘. Dreger highlighted Detroit’s three-game homestand, which begins tonight, as the last chance for Lalonde to continue in his role behind the Red Wings bench.
Lalonde is in the final year of his contract originally signed before the 2022-23 NHL season. He’s compiled an 85-79-21 record as head coach of the Red Wings and has missed the playoffs in his two full seasons behind the bench. General manager Steve Yzerman has typically stayed patient with his head coaches since his time with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Still, it’s seemingly growing thin with Detroit’s lack of competitiveness.
The firing of Lalonde would mark a significant shift in how the Red Wings have approached coaching in the recent past. Detroit has not fired a coach in-season since the late Mike Illitch purchased the organization in 1982.

- The Montreal Canadiens announced that defenseman Mike Matheson will miss his second straight game with a lower-body injury. It’s concerning that Matheson has missed two games in a row but the Canadiens won’t play again until Saturday which should give Matheson plenty of time to recover if it’s a minor injury. He’s been an effective puck mover again this season with 12 assists in 20 games.
- Chances are Anton Lundell‘s availability for tonight won’t be decided until warm-ups. According to Colby Guy of the Associated Press, Lundell’s status is still in the air depending on his ability to see through a bubble shield after suffering a facial injury in the Florida Panthers’ last game against the Washington Capitals. The Panthers are expected to change their lines should Lundell not feel ready to go.
- According to Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times, forward Mitchell Chaffee won’t be in tonight’s lineup for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Chaffee only skated in 9:55 of Tampa Bay’s dominant win against the Colorado Avalanche Monday night after skating on the team’s second line next to Brandon Hagel and Anthony Cirelli. In his three recent games on the second line, Chaffee recorded one goal and three points.
- Depth forward Noah Gregor will be a game-time decision for the Ottawa Senators tonight (X Link). Gregor has missed five straight games for the Senators after scoring two goals and three points in his first 16 contests.
Lightning Sign Mitchell Chaffee To Two-Year Extension
The Lightning have re-signed winger Mitchell Chaffee to a two-year contract, per a team announcement Thursday. The deal, his first one-way pact, carries a cap hit of $800K and a total value of $1.6MM.
Chaffee, 26, landed with the Lightning last summer on a one-year, two-way contract with a $350K guarantee after reaching Group 6 unrestricted free agency. An undrafted free agent signing by the Wild in 2020, Chaffee made his NHL debut in Minnesota in 2021-22 but played just two games with the club, instead spending most of his time on assignment to AHL Iowa.
The Michigan native had set himself up as a top-six minor-league contributor early on, totaling 23 goals and 39 points in 49 games by his second professional season. But a torn ACL in his right knee ended his 2022-23 campaign after seven points in 10 games, after which the Wild opted not to bring him back and let him walk to free agency.
Healthy once again, Chaffee began the season on assignment to AHL Syracuse after clearing waivers and was solid on a middling offensive club, recording 12 goals and 26 points in 36 contests. He was recalled twice on brief stints in December and January but remained on the NHL roster for the rest of the regular season and playoffs after a Feb. 5 recall. In 30 games with the Bolts, primarily stepping in for the injured Tanner Jeannot, the 6’1″ winger had four goals in seven points while averaging 11:17 per contest. He struggled to get the puck on net, averaging less than one shot on goal per game but was a skilled finisher and shot nearly 15%.
Possession numbers weren’t particularly kind to Chaffee, who posted a below-average 47.4 CF% and 41.1 xGF% at even strength, per Hockey Reference. He did manage to stay out of the box, though, taking just two minor penalties
He’ll be in consideration for an opening-night roster spot next season, but ideally, he serves as their 12th or 13th forward option. He didn’t display enough offensive talent to elevate into a top-nine role long-term, and his poor relative possession numbers, despite seeing even offensive and defensive usage at even strength, don’t paint the best picture of him as a third-line checking threat.
After re-upping Chaffee, the Lightning have $11.79MM in projected cap space next season with a roster size of 17, per CapFriendly. A good chunk of that will go toward attempting to re-sign captain Steven Stamkos and avoiding losing him after 16 years and nearly 1,100 games with the club. Chaffee was set to become a Group 6 UFA yet again this summer if not extended.
