Morning Notes: Reinhart, Palmieri, Jagr

The Buffalo Sabres have struggled mightily through the first few games of the 2017-18 season, and head coach Phil Housley has already decided to shake things up. The team had a distinctly different look at practice today, with Zemgus Girgensons moving up to the first line with Jack Eichel, and Sam Reinhart moving back to the wing.

The team had hoped Reinhart would take the center position and run with it this year, now entering his third full season in the league. The 21-year old has won just seven of twenty faceoffs in the first three games, and finds himself a -6 on the year already. For now, he’ll skate beside Johan Larsson and try to prove that he can be relied upon at both ends of the rink.

  • The New Jersey Devils will have Kyle Palmieri back in the lineup tonight when they take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, lengthening out their already impressive lineup. The Devils have been much better than anticipated to start the year, with players like Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt making immediate impacts. Palmieri will jump back on the top line with Pavel Zacha and Taylor Hall, pushing everyone else down a peg. The Devils are 2-0 in the young season, but will have to contend with Toronto’s firepower tonight in a battle of unbeaten teams.
  • Last, but certainly not least, Jaromir Jagr is set to make his Calgary Flames debut according to John Shannon of Sportsnet. Jagr took some time to get accustomed to the Flames system after signing just before the season began, but will now jump into game action against the Los Angeles Kings. The Flames, considered contenders in the Western Conference, are off to a 2-1 start but have scored just eight goals in three games. Jagr’s addition should spark the offense some, and make the Flames a tough team to matchup against.

Pacific Notes: McDavid, Sutter, Boeser, Kempe

Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid rejected the idea outright. Without blinking, the young superstar made it very clear that scoring 100 goals is impossible. Just days ago, Jaromir Jagr predicted that McDavid could score 100 goals someday, but McDavid would have none of that., according to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal.

“It’s not possible at all … no one’s ever done it,” said the 20-year-old McDavid, who scored 30 goals a year ago. “Not going to happen.”

The closest anyone has ever come was by Wayne Gretzky, who scored 92 goals in the 1981-82 season. Gretzky also had 87 goals in 1983-84. Alex Ovechkin, who has seven goals in the Capitals first two games might have a better shot at it than McDavid. However, the 32-year-old’s best season was 65 goals in 2007-08.

  • In the same article, Matheson pointed out that McDavid played his first game without taking a faceoff in Saturday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks. The center yielded to linemate Leon Draisaitl, who is a better faceoff specialist, having won 49 percent of his faceoffs (out of 972 attempts) in the 2016-17 season, while McDavid won just 43 percent (806 attempts). “People know that I’m not that good on faceoffs,” McDavid said. “It’s one of the perks of having Leon on the line.”
  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Sun writes that a lot of the credit that goes towards the Canucks 3-2 victory Saturday was the play of Brandon Sutter. The 28-year-old center and his line of Markus Granlund and Derek Dorsett shutdown McDavid, who didn’t register a point in the game and finished with a plus/minus of -1 in 24:38 of ice time.
  • In the same article, Botchford writes that the public outcry that top prospect Brock Boeser was scratched due to the team focusing more on shutting down Edmonton’s offense. “I know it’s a hot topic,” Vancouver head coach Travis Green said. “He’s going to play. He’s going to get his chance. We set our lineup against a very strong Edmonton team. He’s not going to sit here for a month.”
  • Curtis Zupke of the Los Angeles Times writes that Los Angeles Kings’ Adrian Kempe’s role on the forward line is already beginning to diminish. The former 2014 first-round pick only played two shifts in the third period for the second straight game and it looks like Alex Iafallo has taken his place on the second line of the power play. Kempe has struggled to break through as a wing on the professional level. He scored 12 goals in 46 games for the Ontario Reign of the AHL last year and scored just two goals for the Kings in 25 games.

 

Snapshots: Canucks, Flyers, Jagr, Hornqvist

In an appearance on Sportsnet 650 (audio link), Canucks president Trevor Linden acknowledged that GM Jim Benning has already been in contact with the agents for all of their pending free agents although the discussions were more of the preliminary variety.  The Sedin twins highlight the list of looming UFAs while the likes of winger Sven Baertschi and defenseman Troy Stecher are among those that will be eligible for restricted free agency.  Linden added that center Brendan Gaunce is expected to be cleared for contact next week and the team is hopeful that he could be ready to rejoin the team by the beginning of November.

Other notes from around the league:

  • Although they’re currently carrying eight defensemen, Flyers GM Ron Hextall told Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer that doing so is not their long-term plan. They’re still evaluating which of their young defensemen to keep up with the team (including Robert Hagg, Samuel Morin, and Travis Sanheim) but they also don’t want to keep whoever isn’t in the lineup sitting for very long as a healthy scratch, especially with all of them being waiver exempt.  Accordingly, it wouldn’t be surprising if someone is sent down shortly after Philadelphia returns from their Western road trip to start the season.
  • Jaromir Jagr’s debut in Calgary has still yet to be determined as the team announced via Twitter that he will not suit up against the Jets tonight. Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun adds that Jagr told head coach Glen Gulutzan that he needs a couple more skates with the team before he figures he’ll be ready to suit up.
  • Penguins winger Patric Hornqvist returned to practice for the first time for the first time since participating in an informal skate a month ago, notes Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Hornqvist underwent hand surgery a little more than two weeks ago to remove some screws.  He has yet to be cleared for contact and won’t play tonight but there’s a chance he could return for the following game on Wednesday versus the Capitals.

With the NHL season now underway, we continue our look at what each team has done this summer and what to watch for in the year to come.  Today, we focus on the Calgary Flames.

"<strongPlayer To Watch: F Sam Bennett – With all the exceptional young players in today’s game jumping straight from the entry draft to the All-Star game, it’s easy forget about those who take a bit longer to develop. That’s what has happened so far for the 2014 fourth-overall pick Sam Bennett, who has been a solid if disappointing NHL player thus far in his short career.

After being selected in 2014, Bennett would be returned to the Kingston Frontenac’s of the OHL for another year of junior, only to undergo shoulder surgery and miss most of the season. After doing his rehab in Calgary, and seeing a quick exit from the OHL playoffs, Bennett was dropped right into the NHL for the Flames’ playoff run. His first NHL game came in March of 2015, before jumping into the playoffs for eleven more contests.

He was impressive in those playoffs, and would secure a full-time NHL job the following training camp. It seemed he was on the fast track to NHL stardom just like his 2014 draft mates. Unfortunately, his second season didn’t go as well. Last year saw just 26 points from Bennett and not much improvement from his defense and faceoffs. He was questioned as a true center, and doubted as an elite prospect.

This year, Bennett will have a secret weapon up his right sleeve. Though the Flames have already started their season with a disappointing loss to their rival Edmonton Oilers, sooner than later they’ll insert the ageless Jaromir Jagr into the lineup. He’ll likely skate alongside Bennett to start, giving the still just 21-year old center all the experience and hockey knowledge he could ever want sitting right beside him on the bench. Though Jagr isn’t exactly a coach, he has experience playing with young forwards before.

In Florida, he and Aleksander Barkov turned into a dynamic duo and the latter into a star in the league and Calgary will hope some of that magic will rub off on Bennett. Though the young forward hasn’t ever been criticized for his work ethic, he’ll get to see one of the hardest workers in NHL history—one who has already been spotted bag skating himself at Flames practice—on a daily basis. It will be interesting to see how their games mesh, and how Kris Versteeg fits into the plans on the other side. If Bennett can turn into the star that he was drafted as, Calgary will have a huge advantage they were missing last year.

Key Storyline: The Flames are going for it. This summer they’ve made move after move to bring in players to help them compete right now, and they believe they’re ready to take that next step. Jagr, Smith, Hamonic and others are all answers to questions that were asked last year when they fell at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks once again. Calgary hasn’t had an answer for the Ducks for a while now, and it’s only getting tighter in the Pacific Division.

The Edmonton Oilers, once the punching bag in the Battle of Alberta, are now one of the premiere clubs in the Western Conference, led by a captain who can’t seem to be slowed down by anyone. If the Flames are to position themselves as equals, they’ll need more from their own dynamic young forwards.

Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan are some of the most exciting players to watch in the NHL, but they’ve lacked consistency at times and need to be a nightly source of offense. While the team’s second line impressed last season, buoyed by the debut of Matthew Tkachuk, it’s Gaudreau and Monahan that really drive this train. If they remain in the 50-60 point range, the team will do well enough to make the playoffs and even compete for a few rounds. But they need to be difference makers and return to the 60-goal, 140-point duo they once were. They have the talent. Now is the time to break through.

Minor Transactions: 10/05/17

We’ll keep track of all the assignments around the league right here, as teams fine tune their rosters.

  • The Golden Knights assigned Brandon Pirri to the Chicago Wolves after clearing waivers. The 26-year old forward was just signed to a contract yesterday, after failing to earn on in Florida’s training camp. For the Golden Knights, there is no risk to signing a former 20+ goal scorer to see if he can still compete at this level. The team may be weak on offense all year, and could look to Pirri to infuse some scoring touch on the powerplay at some point.
  • The Boston Bruins sent Emil Johansson back to Providence, and will go with the more veteran Paul Postma as their extra defenseman. Johansson joined the organization last year after his European season was over, and played in six games for the P-Bruins down the stretch. A seventh-round pick, Johansson is highly regarded by the Bruins staff and could get his shot at the NHL at some point this year.
  • The Calgary Flames made another move, sending Garnet Hathaway to the minor leagues in order to clear room for Jaromir Jagr. Jagr was introduced yesterday at a press conference but likely won’t suit up for the team until he gets a few practices under his belt. The Flames could have used his offense last night as they were shutout by the Edmonton Oilers, in a game where Hathaway played just 11 minutes.
  • The Washington Capitals have loaned Chandler Stephenson to Hershey after clearing waivers, meaning the 23-year old will have to wait patiently for his next NHL opportunity. Since being drafted in the third round, Stephenson has only been given short chances at a job with the Capitals, playing in 13 games over the past two years. Still looking for his first NHL point, he’ll have to prove it at the AHL level once again.
  • Grand Rapids will be getting some help, as the Detroit Red Wings have assigned Matt Lorito and Eric Tangradi to the AHL. Tangradi cleared waivers today, and will return to the team he helped take to the Calder Cup championship a year ago. In the playoffs for Grand Rapids, Tangradi scored 19 points in 19 games, and will try to do the same this year. The Griffins have also signed Matt Carey to a professional tryout, and sent Matej Machovsky to the ECHL.
  • According to Adrian Dater of BSN Denver, the Avalanche have indeed sent Joe Colborne to San Antonio to begin the season. Colborne was among those who cleared waivers today, and will have to work his way up from the minor leagues if he wants to return to the NHL. It’s a far fall for Colborne, who was a 19-goal scorer in the league just two seasons ago with Calgary, but suffered the same fate as many Avalanche players and posted a career-low in points last season. Scoring just eight all year, his $2.5MM salary looks like a dreadful overpay.
  • The Blue Jackets have assigned defenseman Markus Nutivaara to the AHL (via the Cleveland Monsters website). For the former seventh-round pick appeared in 66 games during his rookie campaign, collecting two goals and five assists. He also made his way into a pair of playoff games, compiling one goal and one assist.

Jaromir Jagr Signs With Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames have officially signed Jaromir Jagr to a one-year contract worth $1MM, with potential bonuses up to an additional $1MM for games played. Not only will suiting up for the entire season earn him extra cash, but the 45-year old legend is just 56 games shy of Gordie Howe’s all-time record of 1,767 NHL games. If healthy, he’s expected to break that this season."<strong

$1+1MM is a relatively small amount for a player who is still capable of contributing offensively. Jagr has always been a possession monster, able to protect the puck incredibly well with his big frame and distribute pucks from behind the net. His goal total of 16 last year, though disappointing, was due in large part to a career-worst shooting percentage that is almost sure to rebound.

Signing Jagr likely means a reduction of minutes for Troy Brouwer, who was largely disappointing after signing a big contract in free agency. Brouwer came over from the St. Louis Blues on a four-year, $18MM contract but registered the lowest point total of his career. With Micheal Ferland expected to take on a much bigger role with the top unit, and Jagr likely being slotted in on the right side of the third line, Brouwer will be relegated to fourth-line duties most nights.

The Flames have had an impressive offseason, addressing goaltending and defensive issues by bringing in Mike Smith, Eddie Lack and Travis Hamonic. Beyond that, the team can still expect some progression for young forwards Sean Monahan, Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk. If they continue to play to their potential, Jagr could be a piece that helps them get over the top. His value both five on five and with the man advantage will be a big upgrade for Calgary, though there are still downsides to his play.

The biggest knock against Jagr is the speed at which he plays the game. No longer able to beat defenders with his skating ability, he nonetheless can create chances off the rush with skill alone. The apparent lack of defensive ability is usually counteracted by the down-low possession style he and linemates play, keeping the puck nearly 200 feet from their own net on most shifts. The Flames currently have more than $3.6MM in cap space, which would leave them able to make a move in-season should they find themselves in competition for the Stanley Cup.

Evening Notes: Stamkos, Jagr, Price, Khudobin

The Tampa Bay Lightning’s preseason is over and Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times writes about where the Lightning look to be as the new season gets under way. The key positive to the preseason is that both Steven Stamkos and Ryan Callahan look healthy and ready to go for the regular season.

Stamkos, who had knee surgery in mid-November and missed all but 17 games last year, is healthy and played in four preseason games. Smith referred to Stamkos as looking like he never missed any time, although he is still working on his timing, but looks ready to put up big numbers this year. Callahan has also been healthy, after having surgery on his hip and missing all but 18 games a year ago.

Smith writes that the lines will be totally up in the air as the season begins as the only two players who seem to be definitely together will be Stamkos with Nikita Kucherov, who have been together all preseason. The depth on the team is solid as they still have cuts to make, but top talent like 2017 second-round pick Alexander Volkov are right on the horizon. On defense, the team is expecting Jake Dotchin to have a solid season, despite breaking a team rule that kept him out of all, but one preseason game. He has been paired consistently with Victor Hedman in practice.

  • The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford tweets that he believes the St. Louis Blues are still interested in free agent Jaromir Jagr, but it would have to be at less than $2MM, which he doubts would happen. He adds in a later tweet that Jagr would also have to accept a third-line role and second-line power play spot.
  • The Athletic’s Paul Campbell (subscription required) breaks down what makes Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price so great, citing his tracking skills, his edgework, puckhandling and his unwillingness to give up on a play. Price, who just signed an eight-year, $84MM extension that kicks in next season, dominated the NHL last season with a 2.23 GAA in 62 games.
  • Cam Tucker of NBC Sports writes that Boston Bruins’ backup goaltender Anton Khudobin had an excellent preseason and is forcing the Bruins to make a tough decision at that position. Khudobin, who struggled in limited backup minutes last year, was thought to be in heavy competition with Malcolm Subban as Tuukka Rask’s backup. Subban, who has also played well in camp, would have to go through waivers if they send him back to the AHL and there is fear a team in need of a backup goaltender might grab the 23-year-old netminder. Khudobin’s solid preseason of allowing just three goals in two games could keep the 31-year-old in Boston another  year.

Jaromir Jagr Talking With Three NHL Teams

According to Andy Strickland of FOX Sports, Jaromir Jagr is currently in talks with three NHL teams. There had been rumors that Jagr would suit up for Kladno, his Czech team this weekend, but those were dispelled by the man himself saying that he was still talking to NHL teams that wouldn’t want him to risk injury. Whether that means a deal is on the table or not is unclear, but teams like St. Louis—who recently admitted they had discussed Jagr previously—could be getting closer to a contract.

The 45-year old winger has been the story of the offseason, unsigned despite another successful season in 2016-17. Though he’s not the 100-point powerhouse he once was, 46 points in the face of the lowest shooting percentage of his career is still good enough for most teams. He’s always been an elite possession player, able to protect the puck down-low better than almost anyone in the history of the sport. His game is slow and methodical, and though that’s clearly not where the NHL is headed it still works for him and the right kind of linemates.

It’s clear that Jagr wouldn’t settle for a professional tryout, but it also isn’t out of the question to get him for a reasonable amount. In 2013 he signed a one-year deal with only $2MM in salary and $2MM in performance bonuses, an easy number to insert into nearly any cap structure. He rewarded the New Jersey Devils with a 67-point season and some Hart Trophy votes. That is extremely unlikely to happen again, but a performance-based contract still represents little risk.

Poll: How Should The Blues Deal With Their Injury Woes?

The St. Louis Blues have been ravaged by injury already this preseason, with no fewer than five key players out long term. Robby Fabbri, Patrik Berglund, Zachary Sanford, Alex Steen and Jay Bouwmeester are all out somewhere between weeks and months, and each was supposed to play a big role on the team this year. So, while discussing Fabbri’s season-ending knee injury at a press conference earlier today, GM Doug Armstrong was asked about the possibility of signing free agent Jaromir Jagr.

He’s a great player, certainly someone we’ve talked about internally as with a number of players. We’re going to have to really dig deep into how our style of play is, and what type of players can come in and compliment that style.

Armstrong was clear he wouldn’t rush to a conclusion, but did reiterate that since the plan he set forth on July 1st, he’s lost nearly a third of his penciled-in roster. That would suggest that a move will have to come to get better, even if it is simply bringing in a young player from inside their own organization.

Jaromir Jagr “Discussed Internally” By St. Louis

At a press conference to discuss Robby Fabbri’s season-ending knee injury, St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong was asked about the potential of Jaromir Jagr being signed to help the team up front. The Blues now have several forwards out long-term, and will have to put a lot of pressure on their young players at this point.

In response to the Jagr question, Armstrong said that management had discussed that possibility internally, and that they’d need to take a look at their style of play and see if there could be a fit.
