Despite the Canucks getting down to just three names, the team will not resume play tomorrow as originally scheduled. Instead, the league is giving the team some extra time to recover and prepare for action.
Good news is that the Avalanche did not have any new names after Grubauer’s recent positive test. Hopefully, that will continue to be true over the next several days.

Grubauer is about the worst player to test positive for the Avalanche, but at least the team did add to their goaltending depth at the deadline. The team canceled morning skate today but are still expected to play tonight against the Blues. The 29-year-old has been one of the best goaltenders in the league this season with a 25-8-1 record, posting a .920 save percentage in his 34 appearances. Without him, the recently acquired Devan Dubnyk will likely be forced into an increased role.
Also added to the list is Robertson, who was recently recalled from the Toronto Marlies. The Marlies have now been shut down due to COVID-19 protocols, and as Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports, Robertson has been added to the list under precautionary measures. Still, the young forward has been around the Maple Leafs for the last several days and has played each of the last two nights.
For the Canucks, seeing a swathe of players come out of the protocol is excellent news as they prepare for action Friday night. The team hasn’t played since March 24 and will be forced to jump right back into the fray against the Oilers. Their list is down to just seven, with more players expected to be removed tomorrow.

The number of names included on the list today was always expected to increase thanks to the trade deadline yesterday, as players travel all over the continent to their new homes. We will likely see several more added in the next few days, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will be held out more than a few days.
The important thing is that players continue to be removed from the Canucks’ list as the team approaches a return to the ice. Beagle was only added over the weekend, but Hughes was one of the first names to be added, appearing for the first time on April 2. Hopefully, the trend continues and the Canucks have a clean board later this week.

Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire Ben Hutton
The Toronto Maple Leafs had already acquired some depth at forward and in net, but there was still a need to shore up the defensive group. They’ve done that now, as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that the Maple Leafs have acquired Ben Hutton from the Anaheim Ducks. Frank Seravalli of TSN tweets that it will be a 2022 fifth-round pick going back to Anaheim.
Hutton, 27, has been connected to Toronto in the past but signed a one-year $950K contract with the Ducks this season where there was a much easier path to playing time. He has suited up in 34 games this season, but will likely be facing a fight for playing time in Toronto. He should put some pressure on Travis Dermott for that bottom-pairing role next to Zach Bogosian, but more importantly gives the Maple Leafs some insurance in case of injury.
There’s a lot of things Hutton can do, as he has contributed on both the powerplay and penalty kill throughout his career, but he doesn’t have a standout skill that helps him force his way into the lineup. He’s big but not overly physical, a good skater but not an excellent one, and a capable puck-mover but not a dynamic offensive presence. The Maple Leafs will certainly take that kind of depth, but it’s hard to say their group really improved with the deal.
For the Ducks, cashing in Hutton was a no-brainer, even if he only landed a fifth-round pick. The team has plenty of young defense coming and is still collecting draft picks for the rebuild.

All four players that were added recently for the Ducks have found their way off, though Volkov has been added as he moves from one team to another. After being acquired late last night, the young forward will need to face a short quarantine period before he can join Anaheim.
For the Rangers, Di Giuseppe has exited the protocol along with assistant coaches Jacques Martin and Greg Brown. They have joined the team in Philadelphia and can take over their regular duties once again.
Unfortunately, they aren’t the only coaches facing an issue like this. The Buffalo Sabres have announced that interim head coach Don Granato and assistant Matt Ellis are self-isolating and will be unavailable for tonight’s game against the Penguins. Sabres GM Kevyn Adams will be being the bench as head coach instead.

Minnesota had actually announced Andrew Hammond entered the protocol yesterday, but his name did not appear on the report. Now only Parise is present, with the team recalling Joseph Cramarossa under emergency conditions for tonight’s game. It’s unclear what has happened to Hammond, but perhaps the team is not including him on the list while he remains on the taxi squad.
The Bruins will practice this evening after three names came off the list, the same day that the NHL had hoped they would return to normal when things were first shut down. Still, DeBrusk and Kuraly remain in the protocol for now and will be unavailable until they exit.
It’s great news that it remains just two names for the Canadiens, who had four games postponed out of an abundance of caution. Hopefully, things will stay contained for the team and they can get back to normal next week.
After briefly appearing when the list was released, Dobson has also been removed. The Islanders defenseman will not be traveling with the team for their next three games but is eligible to return whenever ready to play.

West Notes: Zuccarello, Scandella, Hutton, Raanta
Although Wild winger Mats Zuccarello has been skating on his own for a while as he works his way back from arm surgery back in November, head coach Dean Evason told Dane Mizutani of the Pioneer Press that he’s unsure when the veteran will be able to return. The 33-year-old had a quiet first season with Minnesota by his standards but still managed to pick up 15 goals and 22 assists. His eventual return will be a welcome addition for a team that is typically in the middle of the pack offensively but considering he has yet to take part in a practice with the team yet, he is likely out for at least another week.
Elsewhere in the West:
- Blues defenseman Marco Scandella is expected to be back in the lineup on Saturday against Los Angeles after missing Wednesday’s game to an upper-body injury, relays Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The veteran has logged more than 19 minutes in each of his three games so far this season and will likely reclaim his spot which was filled by Niko Mikkola against San Jose.
- Ducks defenseman Ben Hutton has not yet received immigration clearance to suit up for Anaheim, notes Elliott Teaford of the Orange County Register. He was okay to participate in camp on a tryout deal but that situation changed once he signed his one-year, $950K contract. In the meantime, while waiting for that to be resolved, Jani Hakanpaa will continue to fill in for the injured Josh Manson.
- Coyotes goaltender Antti Raanta is dealing with a “minor thing”, head coach Rick Tocchet told Jose M. Romero of the Arizona Republic (Twitter link). While declining to go into any further details about what that is, he noted that the netminder is expected to be available on Tuesday against Anaheim.
Ben Hutton Signs With Anaheim Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks have officially signed Ben Hutton to a one-year contract for the rest of the season. The deal is worth $950K according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. It was clear that a deal was coming when Hutton appeared on the COVID Protocol Related Absences list yesterday. It’s not clear when he will be removed from that list so that he’s available to play, but the Ducks have finally announced the deal.
Hutton, 27, was one of the players that felt an offseason squeeze, forced to sign a professional tryout despite a relatively impressive NHL resume. While he likely shouldn’t be deployed on a top pairing, Hutton has nearly 350 games of experience and has averaged just under 20 minutes a night over his five-year career. In 2019-20 he played in 65 games for the Los Angeles Kings and registered 16 points, while putting up strong possession numbers once again.
The Ducks relied heavily on their top two pairs last night to open the season, with Cam Fowler, Kevin Shattenkirk, Josh Manson, and Hampus Lindholm all logging at least 20 minutes. If Hutton can add a little depth to the bottom-pair rotation perhaps they won’t have to put so much responsibility on those top names, at least not every game.
One other thing to remember with Hutton in Anaheim is that he could be another trade deadline piece for them to flip. The one-year, low-money deal will be attractive to contenders partway through the year, especially if he’s able to prove he can still play at a high level.
