Edmonton Oilers Recall Jack Campbell And Philip Broberg

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled goaltender Jack Campbell and defenseman Philip Broberg from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL after the affiliate was eliminated from the AHL playoffs last night. The Condors were swept in the first round, losing in two games to the Ontario Reign.

Campbell hasn’t dressed in an NHL since giving up five goals on 34 shots back on November 4th. The 32-year-old played in just five NHL games this season going 1-4 with a 4.50 goals-against average and a .873 save percentage. After being demoted to the AHL, Campbell put up respectable numbers in 33 games, going 18-13-1 with three shutouts, and a .918 save percentage. He has struggled in two seasons since joining the Oilers as a free agent after signing a five-year $25MM contract.

Broberg returns to the NHL after recording two assists in 12 games with the Oilers this season. The 22-year-old spent the bulk of the year in the AHL, dressing in 49 games and tallying five goals and 33 assists. The former eighth-overall pick has been recalled three times in the past three weeks and will likely serve as depth for the Oilers going forward unless injuries force him into the lineup.

Broberg does have NHL playoff experience having dressed in nine games last spring for the Oilers and one game during the 2021-22 post-season. While he’s never registered an NHL playoff point, he does remain a strong depth option for the Oilers as many pundits feel he’s an NHL defenseman who has been stuck in the AHL for much of this season.

Penguins Will Not Bring Back AHL Coach And Assistant

The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that they’re not renewing the contracts of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head coach J.D. Forrest as well as assistant coach Kevin Porter after they led Wilkes-Barre Scranton to its highest win total in six seasons.

The AHL Penguins finished third in the AHL’s Atlantic Division and had numerous Penguins prospects getting their first taste of professional playoff hockey, however, the team lasted just two games as they were eliminated by a lower-seeded team in the Lehigh Valley Phantoms this past Friday.

Forrest was promoted to head coach of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton back in 2020 after he’d been an assistant coach with the team since 2016. He coached the baby Penguins in each of the last four years, missing the playoffs twice while getting eliminated in the first round in their only two playoff appearances under his leadership. While Forrest won just 113 out of the 252 games he coached, he didn’t exactly have a strong lineup as the Penguins’ minor-league system has been one of the worst in the NHL for quite some time.

Assistant coach Porter was a previous Penguins player, having dressed in 43 regular-season games with the team during their back-to-back Stanley Cup seasons in 2016 and 2017. Porter tallied just three assists during that time and eventually wrapped up his playing career as the captain of the AHL’s Rochester Americans in 2019-20. The 38-year-old has been Forrest’s assistant for his entire run as head coach of the team.

West Notes: DeSmith, Namestnikov, Kiviranta, Hague

Casey DeSmith isn’t on the game roster for Canucks in today’s Game 4 against the Predators, forcing Vancouver to turn to third-string Arturs Silovs for his first playoff start with Thatcher Demko already hurt. It doesn’t appear the Canucks expect DeSmith out for long, however, as he was only termed day-to-day with a lower-body injury. There was further evidence to the fact shortly after the game started, as The Athletic’s Thomas Drance reports DeSmith was still the Canucks’ designated emergency backup for today’s game.

The 32-year-old would only be eligible to play if Silovs and backup Nikita Tolopilo suffered in-game injuries. Otherwise, holding DeSmith out of game action points to his absence as being more precautionary than anything else, hoping to avoid aggravating whatever he’s dealing with. Assumedly, he’ll be back in action for elimination games later in the series after putting up a .911 SV% in two postseason games thus far.

Elsewhere in the Western Conference:

  • Jets forward Vladislav Namestnikov left today’s Game 4 loss to the Avalanche after a Nate Schmidt slapshot hit him in the side of the head in the middle of the third period. He remained on the ice for nearly a minute and was able to skate off with the assistance of trainers, not requiring a stretcher. He’s still been transported to a Denver hospital for evaluation, reports Guerilla Sports’ Jesse Montano. Winnipeg head coach Rick Bowness had no update on Namestnikov’s health postgame other than confirming he was taken to a hospital. The 31-year-old had a goal and a -2 rating in the first three games of the series, which the Jets now trail 3-1.
  • The Avalanche were without winger Joel Kiviranta in today’s win, paving the way for 24-year-old Nikolai Kovalenko to make his NHL debut after being recalled from the AHL less than an hour prior to puck drop. Speaking with reporters postgame, Avs head coach Jared Bednar confirmed Kiviranta’s absence was injury-related, calling him day-to-day with a lower-body issue (via NHL.com’s Ryan Boulding). The 28-year-old had worked his way into a third-line role, a domino effect due to Jonathan Drouin being out for the series. He started the season on a PTO and subsequent AHL contract but inked a major-league deal with Colorado in November. He has one assist and a +2 rating in three games against the Jets this postseason.
  • The Golden Knights expect to be without defenseman Nicolas Hague again in tomorrow’s Game 4 against the Stars, head coach Bruce Cassidy said (via the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Danny Webster). He sustained a lower-body injury in the third period of Vegas’ Game 1 win and has yet to return to practice. The 25-year-old’s third-pairing duties have been assumed by veteran Alec Martinez, who began the postseason on the outside looking in after the Golden Knights’ trade deadline acquisition of Noah Hanifin pushed him down the depth chart. Hague made 73 appearances in the regular season, accumulating two goals and 12 points.

Central Notes: Chisholm, Marchment, Faksa, Fabbro

The Wild picked up one of the more interesting young players who hit waivers this season – defenseman Declan Chisholm. A Jets 2018 fifth-round pick who played just two games for Winnipeg in the first few months of the season, Chisholm immediately became an everyday player in Minnesota, posting three goals and eight points in 29 games while averaging 16:52 per game, 1:53 of which came on the power play.

He’s had a strong enough showing to earn him more runway in Minnesota as the club is expected to extend or issue a qualifying offer to the pending RFA, notes The Athletic’s Michael Russo. Chisholm was an RFA last summer, too. Without being eligible for arbitration and hoping for a one-way deal, he was one of the last remaining holdouts league-wide when he signed a one-year, two-way pact with Winnipeg in September. He’s arbitration-eligible this time around, though, putting a yet-to-be-disclosed firm end date on negotiations if he ends up in another lengthy dispute.

All indications point to Chisholm earning the first one-way contract of his career, and he should slot in as a cheap, puck-moving option near the bottom of the lineup for the cap-strapped Wild. Minnesota owes him a qualifying offer of $813,750, a cap hit he’s likely to eclipse when all is said and done.

Canucks Without Casey DeSmith For Game 4, Arturs Silovs Starts

Just one week into the postseason, the Canucks are down to their third-string goalie. Latvian rookie Arturs Silovs is expected to start Game 4 against the Predators this afternoon after Casey DeSmith sustained an undisclosed injury in Friday’s Game 3 win, reports Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.

DeSmith’s injury occurred late in Game 3 and is unrelated to the hit he took from Predators center Michael McCarron in the first period that resulted in a minor penalty and a fine for the latter. He’s listed as day-to-day and remains an option for Game 5 on Tuesday, per Seravalli. Vancouver will dress 24-year-old Belarusian netminder Nikita Tolopilo from AHL Abbotsford to backup Silovs today – he was rostered under emergency conditions earlier in the week.

Vancouver is already without starter and likely Vezina Trophy nominee Thatcher Demko, thanks to a suspected knee injury in Game 1. He’s listed as week-to-week, and there’s no consensus on when he may become available.

DeSmith did well under unexpected pressure, stopping 41 of the 45 shots he faced for a .911 SV% and 2.02 GAA. He made 29 saves on 30 shots to buoy the Canucks in Game 3, who won 2-1 despite only getting 12 shots through to Preds netminder Juuse Saros. The 32-year-old had only one playoff start entering Game 2 of this series, coming in 2022 with the Penguins in Game 1 of their first-round loss to the Rangers. He stopped 48 of 51 shots faced before leaving due to injury in the first overtime – Pittsburgh eventually won 4-3 in 3OT with backup Louis Domingue stopping all 17 Rangers shots he faced.

The Canucks now turn to Silovs, who spent most of the year with Abbotsford but made four starts down the stretch while Demko missed multiple weeks with an unrelated knee injury. Vancouver went 3-0-1 in games Silovs started, but the 23-year-old didn’t post the prettiest numbers, logging a .881 SV%. Shot quality data points to that being an artificially low number, though, as the Canucks didn’t give him much help defensively – Silovs saved exactly as many goals as expected, per MoneyPuck. The 2019 sixth-round pick had a .907 SV%, 2.74 GAA and four shutouts in 34 showings for Abbotsford this year, compiling a 16-11-6 record.

While inexperienced at the NHL level, Silovs is no stranger to performing well in big moments. He had a strong .914 SV% in two postseason games for Abbotsford last year and has been exceptional on the international stage, logging a .929 SV% and 1.96 GAA in 14 appearances for Latvia at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships. He was named the MVP of last year’s tournament, backstopping his country to a bronze medal – their first ever at the event.

Backing up Silovs is Tolopilo, an undrafted free-agent pickup last summer out of the second tier of Swedish pro hockey. He’s had similar numbers to Silovs with Abbotsford this year, earning a .905 SV% and 2.83 GAA in 35 appearances.

Bruins Activate Derek Forbort From LTIR

The Bruins removed defenseman Derek Forbort from long-term injured reserve yesterday, per CapFriendly. He didn’t suit up in Boston’s Game 4 win but is now officially an option for the rest of the series.

Forbort, 32, missed much of the season with a lower-body injury that had lingered since October. The Bruins shut him down semi-permanently at the trade deadline, announcing he’d be out for the rest of the regular season and was moved to LTIR to give them some additional cap space, used to acquire Pat Maroon from the Wild and Andrew Peeke from the Blue Jackets. His last NHL game was a 5-1 loss to the Islanders on March 2.

He made only 35 appearances in the regular season, his fewest since 2019-20. He also failed to score a goal for the first time since that season but contributed four assists and a +8 rating while averaging 17:48 per game.

Boston brought Forbort in on a three-year, $9MM contract in free agency in 2021 that’s expiring this offseason. He started his tenure in Boston as an above-average shutdown defender, controlling 53.1% of expected goals when on the ice in 2021-22, per Hockey Reference. He remained one of their top penalty killers throughout, but his even-strength role slowly dwindled over the life of the deal, as did his possession metrics.

If Forbort is called upon for playoff action, he won’t come in completely cold. He posted a -1 rating in two appearances with AHL Providence on a recent conditioning stint that ended last week. The 2010 first-round pick of the Kings has played in all 14 Boston playoff games in 2022 and 2023, posting two assists and a -2 rating while averaging 16:54 per game.

Avalanche Recall Nikolai Kovalenko

The Avalanche have added winger Nikolai Kovalenko to their playoff roster ahead of this afternoon’s Game 4 against the Jets, Colorado Hockey Now’s Evan Rawal reports. Colorado is carrying only one healthy extra skater, defenseman Caleb Jones, so Kovalenko has a decent chance to make his NHL debut today if there’s an injury or other lineup change to the Avs’ forward group. Pregame line rushes indicate he’s replacing Joel Kiviranta, who has one assist and a +2 rating in the series while averaging 10:14 per game.

Kovalenko, 24, only arrived in North America last month. The Russian winger has shot up the prospect ranks recently, breaking out as a first-line caliber player with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod of the Kontinental Hockey League. The 2018 sixth-round pick signed his entry-level contract last summer but was returned to Torpedo for 2023-24 with the expectation that he’d join the Avs when his season ended overseas.

That didn’t quite come to fruition, at least immediately. Kovalenko played through an injury during his brief playoff run with Torpedo that required some rehabilitation upon arriving in Denver, so the Avs assigned him to AHL Colorado to get into some practice and brief game action. The son of longtime NHL winger Andrei Kovalenko ended up making his AHL debut a couple of weeks ago, posting two goals and two assists in six combined regular-season and playoff games thus far.

Kovalenko’s good skating and playmaking skills have made him one of the top point producers in the KHL over the past two years, totaling 32 goals, 57 assists, and 89 points in 98 appearances for Torpedo since 2022. He’s expected to make a strong push to crack the Avs’ opening night roster next season. His ELC still covers the 2024-25 campaign, costing $896,250 against the cap.

Red Wings Sign Andrew Gibson To Entry-Level Contract

2023 second-round pick Andrew Gibson has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Red Wings beginning in 2024-25, per a team announcement. The 19-year-old defenseman will immediately report to AHL Grand Rapids, which leads Rockford 1-0 in their best-of-five Central Division Semifinal series.

Gibson will get his first taste of professional hockey for now, but the right-shot blue-liner will likely return to major junior play next season. He doesn’t turn 20 until February 2025, making him ineligible for a full-time assignment to the AHL. As he’s not expected to compete for an NHL roster spot just yet, the Red Wings will return him to the Ontario Hockey League’s Soo Greyhounds next season and slide the first year of his ELC to 2025-26.

The Ontario native is coming off a decent post-draft season. In 68 games with the Greyhounds, he finished seventh on the club in points with 44 (12 goals, 32 assists) and led them with a +36 rating. He added two assists and a +5 rating in 11 playoff games as the Greyhounds were eliminated in the second round by the Saginaw Spirit.

Gibson was taken 42nd overall by Detroit last year, slightly higher than the consensus heading into the draft. Elite Prospects gave him a “C” grade in their 2023 draft guide, praising his physical play, zone exit and passing abilities, and overall hockey sense. Offensive execution remained an issue for him this season, and he likely won’t be close to a top point-producer in the pros, but has the skill sets as a solid two-way man near the bottom of a lineup. He was one of three second-round picks Detroit had last year – the 42nd overall pick was acquired from the Blues in 2022 as part of the return for defenseman Nick Leddy.

If Gibson plays less than 10 NHL games next season as expected, his lone entry-level slide will take effect and delay his expiration until 2028.

Morning Snapshots: Matthews, Team Canada, Capitals

The Toronto Maple Leafs pulled star Auston Matthews ahead of Game Four’s third period last night. When asked about it postgame, head coach Sheldon Keefe said it was the team doctor’s that made the decision, pulling Matthews because of illness. Toronto went on to lose the game 3-1, a scorecard that also matches Boston’s lead on the series. Matthews has played through the illness for the last two games, taking maintenance days at Toronto’s practices in between to try and regain energy. No indication has been made about his availability for Game Five, though it could be dependent on how he’s feeling each day moving forward.

Matthews, like the rest of the Maple Leafs lineup, hasn’t had a particularly strong first round – managing one goal and three points in four games and adding one penalty. It’s a tremendous step down from a historic regular-season that saw Matthews become the first player to score 69 goals since Mario Lemieux, who pulled off the feat in just 70 games in 1996. Matthews wasn’t able to crack the illustrious 70-goal mark, but still managed unprecedented scoring in this day-and-age. Unfortunately, something about that scoring hasn’t translated to the playoffs, and Matthews now finds his Leafs on the brink of elimination. While his illness has clearly not improved much, it’s hard to imagine Matthews will sit out of a chance to save Toronto’s season.

Other notes from around the hockey world:

  • Top 2025 NHL Draft prospect Roger McQueen will miss the remaining U18 World Championship with an injury suffered in the first period of  Canada’s latest game against Team Czechia, shares FloHockey’s Chris Peters (Twitter link). McQueen managed one point across three games this tournament, including his early exit against Czechia. Canada has added fellow 2025 prospect Caleb Desnoyers to the roster in McQueen’s absences. Desnoyers is one of the draft’s top names out of the eastern Canada and posted 20 goals and 56 points in 60 games as a QMJHL rookie this season. He also scored three goals and five points in eight games during the World U-17 Hockey Challenge. Desnoyers will now get to run with the big dogs in U18s, and is expected to draw in right away, with Canadian forward Carson Wetsch receiving a one-game suspension for a hit-from-behind. Wetsch, a 2024 Draft prospect, has scored two goals in two tournament games.
  • The Washington Capitals saw three defensemen progress from injury at Sunday morning’s practice. Most notably, defenders Rasmus Sandin and Nick Jensen both returned to full contact, with Sandin even taking reps on the team’s power-play, shares The Hockey News (Twitter link). At least one of them is expected to return to the lineup ahead of Game Four, with Trevor van Riemsdyk ruled out with an upper-body injury, per Ben Raby of Capitals Radio (Twitter link). Lucas Johansen also skated as a healthy scratch, opening up room should both Sandin and Jensen be ready. Rookie defender Vincent Iorio also returned to the team’s practice in a no-contact jersey after suffering an upper-body injury in Game One. These moves should give Washington a new-look on defense, after they’ve allowed the New York Rangers to average 3.67 goals through Round One’s first three games.

Evening Notes: Russian Showcase, Hague, Karlsson, Raymond

Due to regulations that have been put in place by the National Hockey League, a limited number of teams have been able to travel to Russia in an attempt to scout upcoming overseas talent for the 2024 NHL Draft. However, it appears a solution has been developed, as Kevin Weekes of ESPN reports that a Russian showcase will take place from June 18th to 23rd.

Being the most high-profile Russian prospect available at this year’s draft, it is unlikely that forward Ivan Demidov will usurp Macklin Celebrini as the top player in this year’s class due to the showcase. However, after Celebrini, there is no singular player who is a surefire pick for second overall, meaning Demidov could use this showcase to his advantage.

Of the other Russian prospects projected to go in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft, Anton Silayev and Igor Chernyshov could also use the showcase to their advantage. However, even though he is projected as the second-best international skater, it is hard to imagine a scenario where Silayev is selected any higher than the third defensemen off the board.

Other notes:

  • Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague has been ruled out of tonight’s third game against Dallas and remains listed as day-to-day notes Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.  He missed the second game of the series due to a lower-body injury which will cost him now at least a second contest.  The 25-year-old led all Vegas blueliners in hits this season with 155 while chipping in with a dozen points in 73 games. Alec Martinez played in place of Hague last game and should do so again.
  • Staying in Vegas, even though he was not on the ice for the team’s practice this morning, forward William Karlsson is expected to suit up for the Golden Knights tonight reports Jesse Granger of The Athletic. After another quality regular season in Vegas, Karlsson has been able to suit up in the first two games of the series but has failed to find the scoresheet so far. Nevertheless, with Karlsson confirmed in the lineup, the third line of Karlsson, Tomas Hertl, and Anthony Mantha still represents one of the premier third lines in this year’s playoffs.
  • Joining many of his teammates and coaches for this summer’s 2024 IIHF World Championship, Chris Johnston of TSN reports that Detroit Red Wings’ forward Lucas Raymond will join Team Sweden for the international tournament. Raymond represents one of the best offensive options for Team Sweden after experiencing a breakout year during the 2023-24 campaign. In 82 games, Raymond scored 31 goals and 72 points, leading all Red Wings in scoring.
