Tory Dello

International Notes: Brennan, Cerny, Dello

July 21, 2025 at 8:15 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

Former NHL defenseman T.J. Brennan has played in Europe ever since the pandemic hit in 2020. While he’s spent most of that time in Switzerland, he’s now making the jump to HK Olimpija Ljubljana, the lone Slovenian club in Austria’s ICEHL, the team announced on Facebook.

Brennan, 36, was the first pick of the second round in the 2007 draft by the Sabres. While he’s long been a high-end point producer from the blue line at the minor league and European levels, his all-around game never translated into a full-time NHL career. He only made 53 big-league appearances with the Sabres, Panthers, and Maple Leafs between the 2011-12 and 2016-17 campaigns, scoring 13 points with a -22 rating.

The New Jersey native has spent the last three seasons with Switzerland’s HC Ajoie in the National League, the country’s top flight. The team isn’t very good, fighting to stay in the league in a relegation series in two of the last three years, but Brennan still managed 63 points in 109 games for the club.

He now returns to the ICEHL, still among Europe’s better leagues, where he spent the 2021-22 season with EC Salzburg. He was named a league All-Star and won a title with Salzburg, leading the league in scoring by a defenseman with 47 points in 48 games. While he’s now four years older, he’ll look to recapture some of that success with his new Slovenian side.

A few more recent international signings of note:

  • After going undrafted this year, 2007-born defenseman Stepan Cerny is continuing his development in North America after his European team, Czechia’s Mountfield HK, announced he’s departing the club to join the USHL’s Fargo Force. Cerny won a silver medal with Czechia’s under-18 squad at last year’s Hlinka Gretzky Cup and put up great numbers with Mountfield’s under-20 club, putting up a 6-27–33 scoring line in 36 regular-season games. However, the lefty clocks in at just 5’9″ and 139 lbs, making it hard to imagine him as anything more than a late-round pick. He’ll look to grow both physically and in his on-ice progression with Fargo in hopes of being selected in 2026 as an overage pick. He was selected No. 13 overall in the 2024 CHL Import Draft by the QMJHL’s Gatineau Olympiques, but he opted to remain at home for his draft year.
  • There’s more news out of Czechia: longtime AHL defenseman Tory Dello has joined Extraliga club HC Energie Karlovy Vary, the club announced over the weekend. Dello, 28, was a two-time Big 10 champion with Notre Dame and has recorded a 13-43–56 scoring line with 134 PIMs and a +37 rating in 229 AHL games since turning pro in 2020. He spent last season on a two-way deal with the Red Wings and was traded to the Devils in the league’s lone post-deadline trade, posting eight points in 39 games split between Detroit’s and New Jersey’s affiliates in Grand Rapids and Utica.

Snapshots: Kopitar, Silovs, Dello, Emilio Pettersen

Kings center Anze Kopitar is in the final season of his contract and is eligible to sign an extension.  However, while the team is hoping to get a new deal in place for Adrian Kempe, that won’t be the case for the captain.  In an appearance on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio earlier this week (Twitter link), GM Ken Holland indicated that Kopitar’s camp has indicated that he isn’t looking to sign a new deal at this time and intends to take a year-by-year approach moving forward.  The 37-year-old has played 1,454 games over his career in Los Angeles but is at the stage where it makes sense to assess things one year at a time.  Last season, Kopitar was still quite productive, tallying 21 goals and 46 assists in 81 games along with nine points in seven playoff contests.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • Before he was traded to Pittsburgh, the Oilers showed interest in goaltender Arturs Silovs, relays Postmedia’s Kurt Leavins. However, the Canucks indicated that they would not move him to Edmonton, their division rival.  Knowing that Silovs was likely to be claimed on waivers in training camp, Vancouver elected to send him to the Penguins for a fourth-round pick and prospect Chase Stillman.  But the fact that Edmonton was discussing Silovs suggests that GM Stan Bowman is keeping an eye on the goaltending market heading into training camp.
  • UFA defenseman Tory Dello has inked a one-year deal with Karlovy Vary in Czechia, per a team release. The 28-year-old started the season in Detroit’s system but was traded to New Jersey just after the NHL trade deadline (but before the AHL one, keeping him eligible to play down the stretch).  Between the two teams, Dello had eight points in 41 games; this will be his first stint overseas after spending the last five years in the AHL.
  • UFA winger Mathias Emilio Pettersen is expected to sign with SHL Djurgarden, reports Hockey News SE’s Mattias Persson. The 25-year-old spent last season with AHL Texas, collecting nine goals and 20 assists in 70 regular season games while adding three points in 14 playoff contests.  However, Emilio Pettersen wasn’t eligible to be tendered a qualifying offer last month as he qualified for Group Six unrestricted free agency and it appears he’ll be using that to take a chance at playing in a new league.

Devils Acquire Tory Dello

March 15, 2025 at 12:33 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Friday’s AHL trade deadline came with less fanfare than usual but there was one swap of a player on an NHL contract.  The Red Wings announced that they traded defenseman Tory Dello to the Devils in exchange for future considerations.

The 28-year-old is playing on his first NHL contract after inking a one-year, two-way deal with Detroit last summer.  Dello had been an AHL regular on the back end for the previous three seasons, two coming with Laval and one with Chicago.  The signing was a homecoming of sorts as Dello began his professional career with the Griffins after wrapping up his college career at the University of Notre Dame in 2020.

But playing time has been harder to come by for Dello this year as he has been limited to just 27 outings with Grand Rapids where he had a goal and three assists.  He’ll now hope to get more of a regular look with New Jersey’s affiliate in Utica.

Because this trade came after the NHL trade deadline, Dello is not eligible to be recalled to New Jersey for the rest of the season.  It’s worth noting that this move puts the Devils at 49 contracts out of the maximum of 50 which could come into play if they’re looking to be active in college free agency.  Meanwhile, Detroit’s contract count drops to 45 with the swap.

Detroit Red Wings Sign Tory Dello

July 4, 2024 at 5:15 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

The Detroit Red Wings organization has made an addition to their AHL affiliate as the team announced a one-year, two-way contract with defenseman Tory Dello. It will mark the first time in Dello’s short career that he has signed with an NHL franchise.

After a lengthy stay with the Tri-City Storm of the USHL, the Lakewood, IL native committed to the University of Notre Dame where he would spend the next four years. During his time in South Bend, Dello scored seven goals and 40 points in 154 games for the Fighting Irish and amassed 133 PIMs in the process. Dello signed an AHL contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins once his playing days in Notre Dame ended.

Dello’s time in the AHL has been very similar to his time in the NCAA as he’s rarely seen on the scoresheet outside his time in the penalty box. Going into his sixth professional season, Dello has played 188 games split between the Griffins, Laval Rocket, and Chicago Wolves while collecting 12 goals, 38 points, and 112 PIMs overall.

With the Red Wings looking to graduate some defensive prospects to the NHL level this season, Dello may find a home on the Griffins as the team’s sixth or seventh defenseman. Grand Rapids recently qualified for the Calder Cup playoffs for the first time since the 2018-19 season and will be looking to return in this upcoming season. Keeping this in mind, and factoring in the glut of prospects in Detroit’s system, Dello’s playing time may be considerably limited on the life of this contract.
