- The COVID situation for the Islanders is bad enough at the moment but they got some bad news on the injury front as well as blueliner Noah Dobson is dealing with a lower-body injury, mentions Mollie Walker of the New York Post. It has been a disappointing start for the 21-year-old who has been quiet offensively with just four assists in 14 games while being on the fringes of the top four on their back end. Dobson is a pending restricted free agent and any extended absence – there’s no timeline for a return just yet – would certainly hurt his chances of a long-term deal this summer.

Chara Placed In COVID Protocol; Nelson Out 2-4 Weeks
The New York Islanders have had another player enter this COVID protocol, as general manager Lou Lamoriello told reporters including Arthur Staple of The Athletic that Zdeno Chara tested positive. The rest of the team has tested negative so far, and they are preparing to play tomorrow night.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of the bad news for the Islanders. Lamoriello also explained that Brock Nelson will be out two to four weeks with a lower-body injury. To fill out the roster, Thomas Hickey and Anatolii Golyshev have been recalled from the AHL.
Chara joins Adam Pelech, Andy Greene, Anders Lee, Josh Bailey, Kieffer Bellows, and Ross Johnston in the protocol, all of whom are not expected back in time for tomorrow. That means the Islanders will continue to play extremely short-handed unless the league steps in to postpone some games. The team is scheduled to take on the New York Rangers tomorrow night and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday.
It’s not even just COVID-related absences hurting the team though, as Ryan Pulock is also out long-term with an injury and now Nelson also finds himself on the shelf. The team has now lost six games in a row and finds themselves slipping completely out of the playoff picture in the Metropolitan Division.
Anthony Beauvillier Removed; Kieffer Bellows Added To COVID Protocol
According to New York Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello, forward Kieffer Bellows has entered the league’s COVID protocol. However, forward Anthony Beauvillier, who was placed on the list Saturday prior to their game against the Calgary Flames, has been deemed a false positive and is eligible to play in their Sunday night game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Islanders still have six players in COVID protocol, including Josh Bailey, who still remains quarantined in Florida where he originally tested positive.
Getting Beauvillier back into the fold is huge for this Islanders team, who dropped their first-ever game at UBS Arena 5-2 to Calgary. Beauvillier returns to the team’s top-six forward group and has three goals and four assists in 13 games this season. In his absence, Andy Andreoff rode shotgun on the second line with Brock Nelson and Oliver Wahlstrom.
Bellows was in the lineup against Calgary, playing first-line duties with Zach Parise and Mathew Barzal. Through five games this season, the 23-year-old Bellows has just one assist and has been limited to just 11:37 per game.
In addition to Bailey, the team remains without captain Anders Lee, Adam Pelech, Ross Johnston, and Andy Greene.
Three New York Islanders Added To COVID Protocol
Just under two hours ahead of the New York Islanders’ home opener against the Calgary Flames, Anthony Beauvillier, Adam Pelech, and Andy Greene were added to the NHL’s COVID protocol, per Newsday’s Andrew Gross.
It’s an extremely tough situation for the team, which now has six total players in COVID protocol. Josh Bailey, Anders Lee, and Ross Johnston were added over the past week. Their number one defenseman, Ryan Pulock, is on injured reserve.
The Islanders recalled forwards Richard Panik and Andy Andreoff as well as defensemen Grant Hutton and Paul LaDue today from the AHL’s Bridgeport Islanders. Hutton, along with Robin Salo, who the Islanders recalled earlier, could make his NHL debut.
Losing Beauvillier and Pelech, in particular, is tough to swallow for the Islanders, who sit third-last in the Eastern Conference with a 5-6-2 record after their season-opening 13-game road trip. Beauvillier is one of the team’s top point producers with three goals and seven points through 13 games this season. While Pelech has just two assists, he’s counted on for his defense, not his scoring ability. He’s averaged 21:07 per game and with a +4 rating, his minutes will be tough to replace.
Islanders Recall Richard Panik, Grant Hutton, And Paul LaDue
- The Islanders have recalled winger Richard Panik plus defensemen Grant Hutton and Paul LaDue, reports Newsday’s Andrew Gross (Twitter link). Forward Andy Andreoff has also been recalled. Those promotions were needed with the recent injury to Ryan Pulock plus the placements of Anders Lee and Ross Johnston in COVID protocol. New York will finally play their first home game of the season following a whopping 13-game road trip to start while the finishing touches on UBS Arena were put in place.
Anders Lee, Ross Johnston Placed In COVID Protocol
The New York Islanders are supposed to open their brand new arena tomorrow night, but they may be without their captain for the festivities. The team announced today that Anders Lee and Ross Johnston have been placed in the COVID protocol.
To be clear, the team has not confirmed that either one has tested positive for coronavirus. Entering the protocol does not necessarily mean they will miss tomorrow’s game, as we have recently seen in the case of Dylan Larkin. Larkin was removed from a game earlier this week, only for the positive test to be confirmed false.
Should Lee and Johnston be confirmed positives, however, with any symptoms, they would be unavailable to the team for a minimum of ten days. That would mean the full five-game homestand would be without their captain, not exactly an ideal situation given the circumstances around the new rink.
Snapshots: Islanders, Norlinder, Fix-Wolansky
The New York Islanders were dealt a tough hand to start the season with a 13-game road trip, but things aren’t exactly looking up with the news that defenseman Ryan Pulock will miss the next four to six weeks with a lower-body injury. The Islanders sit with a 5-6-2 record, and while it’s certainly recoverable, especially considering their track record, they find themselves in an extremely competitive division with seven teams ahead of them. With a defense core that’s looked troubling at times, the team could look to get outside help via the form of a trade. The Athletic’s Arthur Staple says that while the team could put faith into their staff in AHL Bridgeport to help bridge the gap until Pulock’s return, there’s a variety of trade targets they could examine. While D-men who have experience playing on the right side aren’t usually available for trade, he lists Seattle’s Vince Dunn as a potential option who could still prove to pay dividends on the power play once Pulock returns, a role that hasn’t been filled properly since the departure of Devon Toews.

Ryan Pulock Out 4-6 Weeks With Lower-Body Injury
When it was revealed just before puck drop that the New York Islanders would be without two key players, alarm bells went up over the health of Ryan Pulock. He was ruled out with a lower-body injury, with the team explaining that he would be re-evaluated upon their return to New York. That evaluation appears to have occurred, as the team announced that Pulock is out for four to six weeks with a lower-body injury.
Pulock played just 16:45 on Monday but exited early after blocking a shot while shorthanded. It’s a huge blow for an Islanders team already reeling, embarrassed 6-1 last night by the Florida Panthers without him in the lineup. The normally stingy defensive unit has now allowed 19 goals over their last four games, losing all of them. Taking one of the team’s most important defensive players out of the lineup isn’t going to help those own-end issues, meaning the group will have to find another way to fill those minutes effectively.
If he returns four weeks from today, Pulock would still miss a total of 14 games. Six weeks would take him over the Christmas break, and take his total absences closer to 20.
The team does have some depth in the minor leagues, but one of the players that could have been an option–Bode Wilde–was loaned overseas when he declined the COVID-19 vaccination. Paul Ladue, one of the few other right-shot options, has just two NHL games under his belt since the 2018-19 season. Whoever they do recall likely won’t have to play right away, but the Islanders’ defensive depth is going to be tested with Pulock out for a while.
Islanders’ Ryan Pulock, Josh Bailey Sidelined
Just before puck drop of their Tuesday night match-up with the red hot Florida Panthers, the New York Islanders announced that they will be without two key contributors. The team revealed that defenseman Ryan Pulock has suffered a lower-body injury and forward Josh Bailey has been placed in the NHL’s COVID Protocol. It is unclear if either player will be available for the Isles’ next game on Saturday against the Calgary Flames.
Both Pulock and Bailey skated just last night against the Tampa Bay Lightning, implying that Pulock was injured in the game and Bailey likely entered the protocol on account of a positive test, without much opportunity for a close contact outside the locker room. Pulock did record only 16:45 of ice time on Monday, fifth among Islanders defenders and well below his norm, so it should not be a surprise that he is not at full strength. The team did not disclose any details about Pulock’s injury and only noted that he will be re-evaluated once the team returns to New York. Bailey too is on an indeterminate timeline as he goes through the COVID Protocol.
With the Islanders sitting at .500, sharing last place in the Metropolitan Division, the team can ill afford to be without two of their top play-makers. The team is off to a slow start this season and Pulock (2 points, -2 rating in 12 games) and Bailey (6 points, -5 rating in 12 games) are no exception. However, both are still invaluable members of the team. Pulock leads all Islanders in time on ice, while Bailey is logging top line minutes himself. They may not be at the their best right now, but righting the ship will be much more difficult for New York without their stalwart defender and long-time veteran scorer. The Islanders have to hope that Bailey’s stint in the Protocol is little more than a formality and that Pulock’s injury is only minor.
Riley Sheahan And Leo Komarov Placed On Waivers
November 14: Komarov made his move to the KHL’s SKA St. Petersburg today, announcing it via an Instagram post. Komarov expects to join SKA “soon.”
November 13: A pair of veterans are on the waiver wire today as James Mirtle of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that the Kraken have placed center Riley Sheahan on waivers while the Islanders have done the same with Leo Komarov.
Sheahan signed with Seattle at the beginning of September to give them some extra depth down the middle, inking a one-year, $850K contract. However, he has had a limited role this season, logging just 11:28 per game, the lowest average of his career, while tallying just a goal and two assists in 14 games this season. With Colin Blackwell set to make his Kraken debut tonight – per The Athletic’s Ryan S. Clark (Twitter link) – it will be Sheahan that loses his roster spot. With center depth typically being something that teams covet, there is a reasonable chance that the 29-year-old could be claimed.
The same can’t be said for Komarov, who has cleared waivers several times including last month. A report surfaced earlier this week that Komarov was expected to head back overseas and join SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL and today’s placement on unconditional waivers paves the way for that move to be made official on Saturday. Assuming this is indeed the end of Komarov’s time in North America, he’ll leave with 170 points in 491 career NHL contests to go along with a whopping 1,572 hits. Once his deal is terminated, the Islanders will free up $1.875MM in cap room.
