KHL Stars Generating NHL Interest

November 7, 2019 at 7:19 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

Teams around the NHL are always looking for an opportunity to add talent through means other than the draft, especially those that consistently pick in the back half of the round. In that way the KHL has always been a mysterious proving ground, where some players that find great success then can’t translate it to North America.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been very active in Russia over the last few years, with Ilya Mikheyev being their latest find. The 25-year old rookie has 11 points through his first 16 games and looks like he could have a long career in the NHL. Getting an asset like Mikheyev that costs nothing but time and money is obviously a strategy for success and more teams are following suit by scouting the KHL. It was recently reported that the Ottawa Senators now have a presence there, and today Darren Dreger of TSN spoke about the top names drawing interest overseas:

There are five guys that seem to be drawing attention. Nikita Nesterov, the captain of CSKA Moscow is among them, Alexander Barabanov is another one. Konstantin Okulov of Moscow, Alexey Marchenko and most will remember this name, Mikhail Grigorenko formerly of the Buffalo Sabres, again high on the radar.

Three of those names—Nesterov, Marchenko and Grigorenko—will be very familiar to NHL fans, and not necessarily in a good way. All three failed to really have a huge impact when they were playing in North America, though Grigorenko did have two decent seasons with the Colorado Avalanche. He has been a force since returning to the KHL however and is still just 25, making the former Sabres prospect an interesting name to keep an eye on.

Barabanov and Okulov have also been mentioned previously, with the former linked to the Arizona Coyotes and the latter to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens. Both are undrafted forwards that have found plenty of success in the KHL.

It’s unlikely that any of these players will sign before the end of the KHL season, and not a guarantee that any of them will even decide to come to North America at all.

Overseas Notes: Puljujarvi, Okulov, Postma

November 6, 2019 at 6:27 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 2 Comments

There has certainly been no lack of attention paid to the ongoing saga between Jesse Puljujarvi and the Edmonton Oilers. The young forward is a restricted free agent playing in his native Finland this season rather than with his NHL club and both sides seem open to a trade. If Puljujarvi does not sign by December 1st, he cannot play in the NHL this season, so the timeline for a deal to be made is down to less than a month. However, there have been recent rumors that perhaps Puljujarvi could in fact return to Edmonton. After all, the Oilers are off to a hot start and Puljujarvi himself is playing well for Karpat in the Liiga and the two sides may be more amenable to an agreement. That is at least what Oilers GM Ken Holland hopes, as he heads overseas for the Karjala Cup, in part to negotiate with Puljujarvi. However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the player side is not as keen on a reunion. Agent Markus Lehto reiterated that, despite the performance of the Oilers so far this season, Puljujarvi’s focus remains on finding a fresh start in the NHL:

Jesse’s unwillingness to return has nothing to do with current coaches, management, the team, fans or the city. Like I have said multiple times, Jesse has just asked for a change of scenery and to get a fresh start somewhere else. Nothing wrong with that considering the past three seasons. It is very difficult for me to see that he would return there all of a sudden now…. If things don’t work out now with the right team and best possible fit, there is nothing wrong (with playing) the whole season in Europe.

  • Another big name taking part in the Karjala Cup is CSKA Moscow forward Konstantin Okulov. Okulov’s name has already been a fixture in the rumor mill this year as a player being eyed by a number of team’s as a free agent addition this off-season. The 24-year-old Russian has 14 points in 23 games thus far and recorded 31 points in 48 games in the KHL last year. While Okulov has been most frequently linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team that has become known for poaching Russian talent, Friedman states that the rival Montreal Canadiens are actually considered the front-runners for the talented forward. He adds that with Holland in attendance at the tournament, the Oilers will likely take a run at Okulov as well.
  • Paul Postma has finally found a new job in Europe. The veteran defenseman began the year with the KHL’s Metallurg Magnitogorsk, but left the club early last month. The NLA’s HC Lugano has announced that they have now inked Postma to a contract for the remainder of the season. The capable two-way defenseman brings over 200 games of NHL experience to the Swiss club after showing last season with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL that he is even more of an asset in Europe. Lugano, typically a top contender in the NLA, is in the midst of a second straight underwhelming campaign and could use the help. Postma will face high expectations when he debuts for a team in great need of a game-breaking talent.

Overseas Notes: Scherbak, Shore, Prince, Sulak

November 5, 2019 at 6:51 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

A short and tumultuous tenure with the KHL’s Avangard Omsk came to end on Thursday for Nikita Scherbak. The former top prospect of the Montreal Canadiens made his return to Russia this off-season, but his KHL debut was met with criticism and he managed to record just six points in his first 16 games with Avangard, not including some healthy scratches. The two sides agreed that a termination of the contract and a fresh start was the best course of action. Less than a week later, Scherbak has found a new home in the KHL. Traktor Chelyabinsk has announced the signing of Scherbak to a contract for the remainder of the season. Given Scherbak’s struggles to begin the season, as well as with the Los Angeles Kings last year, it seems his name value continues to be enough to find employment. The 2014 first-round pick was once a scoring dynamo in the WHL and showed glimpses of that ability in the minors, but was unable to put it all together in the NHL or with Avangard. Perhaps things will go differently with Traktor, where Scherbak may very well be the best player on the roster.

  • While Scherbak found a new job, the story out of the KHL today has been former NHLers losing their jobs. The league announced today that Dinamo Minsk has parted ways with Drew Shore and are preparing to do the same with Shane Prince, who has been placed on waivers. Sadly for the Belarus-based club, the moves are likely financially-driven. Shore was the team’s scoring leader with 17 points in 24 games, while Prince was third with 13 points in 17 games. The two were fixtures on the scoreboard, but unfortunately didn’t do enough to make an impact in the standings. Minsk has the second-worst record in the KHL, which likely prompted the team’s recent addition of Ryan Spooner. However, the team likely has to shed salary as a result, and Shore and Prince are both established import players. Neither will have any trouble finding another job soon.
  • Severstal Cherepovets is another team cutting ties with a former NHLer, as they have terminated the contract of defenseman Libor Sulak. Sulak, who played in the Detroit Red Wings organization last year, returned to Europe this summer, but has struggled greatly. He has just two points and a -10 rating in 19 games and his release is far more warranted on a performance basis than his counterparts in Minsk. The future is unclear for Sulak, who may have trouble finding another job in the KHL and has likely lost his opportunity to play in North America.

Snapshots: Clifford, Senators, Tavares

November 5, 2019 at 4:19 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The Los Angeles Kings have made it clear over the last few seasons that they’re willing to part with some of their veteran names and Tyler Toffoli is the latest to be involved in trade rumors as he nears the end of his current contract. Not so fast for another pending free agent however, as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet writes in his latest 31 Thoughts column. The Kings will make teams “work” to convince them to trade Kyle Clifford, who has become an integral part of the leadership group in Los Angeles.

Clifford, 28, has never been relied upon to put the puck in the net much, but did record his best offensive season in 2018-19 with 11 goals and 21 points. He carries a $1.6MM cap hit through the end of this season and will be an unrestricted free agent without a new deal. Over 621 regular season games, Clifford has recorded 1,375 hits.

  • The Ottawa Senators haven’t really used the KHL as an avenue of acquiring organizational talent in the past, but Friedman notes that is changing. Notably, the team now has a substantial Russian contingent on the NHL team with Artem Anisimov, Vladislav Namestnikov and Nikita Zaitsev, a group that could potentially help a KHL player get acclimated to life in North America.
  • After seven games without their new captain, the Toronto Maple Leafs will have John Tavares back in the lineup tonight when they take on the Los Angeles Kings. The $11MM center will be reunited with linemate Mitch Marner, though Zach Hyman remains out for now as he continues to recover from major knee surgery.

Arizona Coyotes Pursuing Alexander Barabanov

November 5, 2019 at 1:01 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It was reported last month that there were several NHL executives set to scout KHL forward Alexander Barabanov in person, and now Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet has identified one of them. John Chayka, general manager of the Arizona Coyotes, was recently in Russia meeting Dan Milstein of Gold Star Hockey who represents Barabanov. Friedman notes that the Coyotes are the “most ardent pursuers” of the 25-year old who currently plays for SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL.

Last season Barabanov was one of the most productive offensive players in the entire KHL, scoring 46 points in 58 games. It hasn’t been so rosy this year after his ice time was reduced, but the Coyotes obviously still believe he could be an asset to their organization.

Barabanov will become a free agent at the end of the KHL season and should have several interested NHL parties, though it is obviously unclear what kind of impact he could have on North American ice. He had very similar production last season to Ilya Mikheyev, who is finding success with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but was also outscored significantly by Vadim Shipachyov who failed to make an impact for the Vegas Golden Knights and Nikita Gusev who has struggled with the New Jersey Devils.

The 5’10” forward has represented Russia several times on the international stage, even winning a gold medal at the 2018 Olympics and two bronze medals at the World Championships.

Morning Notes: Puljujarvi, Scherbak, McGinn

October 31, 2019 at 11:30 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland will travel to Helsinki, Finland for the Karjala Cup (an international tournament) this week according to Mark Spector of Sportsnet, to check in on restricted free agent Jesse Puljujarvi. The young forward is having a ton of success in his home country and away from the bright lights of the NHL, scoring 11 goals so far for Karpat in just 17 games.

As the calendar flips into November, the Oilers (or any acquiring team) now have just a month to get Puljujarvi under contract if they want him to play in the NHL this season. As an RFA, he has to be signed by December 1st in order to be eligible to play at all. As Spector writes however, leaving him in Finland all season may be the best option for the Oilers at this point.

  • Nikita Scherbak’s contract with Avangard of the KHL has been terminated, making the former Montreal Canadiens prospect a free agent once again. Scherbak had just six points in 16 games with the team this season, another disappointing outcome for a first-round pick that had such high expectations a few years ago.
  • After just two games with the Charlotte Checkers, Jamie McGinn has decided to pursue other opportunities. The veteran forward has been released from his professional tryout at his request, though it is unclear where he may land next. The 31-year old missed most of last season due to back surgery and was trying to work his way back to the NHL. In the two AHL games, he had zero points and 15 penalty minutes.

Devante Smith-Pelly Signs In KHL

October 28, 2019 at 8:30 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Monday: Official now, the Stanley Cup hero will be heading overseas to join Kunlun.

Friday: After failing to land an NHL contract this summer, Devante Smith-Pelly may be taking his talents overseas. A report out of Russia has Smith-Pelly signing with Kunlun Red Star of the KHL, though the team has not confirmed it yet. It wouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as Kunlun already has plenty of former NHL talent with names like Wojtek Wolski, Gilbert Brule, Adam Cracknell, Ryan Sproul and Griffin Reinhart on the roster among others.

Smith-Pelly was released from his professional tryout with the Calgary Flames before the start of the season and wasn’t able to find work elsewhere around the league. The 27-year old played 54 games with the Capitals last season after his 2018 playoff heroics.

Never much of an offensive player in the NHL, Smith-Pelly recorded seven goals during the Capitals Stanley Cup run and earned himself a place in Washington sport lore. Should this signing go through, he’ll try to continue his hockey career in a new country and league, a difficult challenge to be sure.

Overseas Notes: Olympics, Rattie, Brickley

October 27, 2019 at 10:53 am CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

As collective bargaining continues to progress between the NHL and NHLPA, one of the major issues still in discussions is the league’s participation in the Olympics. The NHL notably sat out the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, as the owners’ complaints included the extended break in the league season, the injury risk to star players, and the lack of value in the locale. With the first two arguments unchanging and the next two Games being held in Beijing, China and Milan, Italy, it is unlikely that the NHL Board has changed their stance on Olympic participation. However, there is a reason why “bargaining” is a key word in the CBA. If Olympic participation is a sticking point for the players, the NHL could use it as leverage in another area of negotiations. Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reports that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr, and IIHF President Rene Fasel plan to meet in Sweden in two weeks during the NHL Global Series between the Buffalo Sabres and Tampa Bay Lightning in Stockholm. The trio of leaders will discuss the issues and options regarding the league’s Olympic participation, but there is unlikely to be a resolution from just the one meeting. Johnston calls the Olympic issue a “major hurdle” in CBA talks, so it could be that the upcoming summit is just the beginning of working toward an answer.

  • One of the more notable NHL players to sign in Europe this off-season is already out of a job. The KHL announced that Lokomotiv Yaroslavl has terminated the contract of forward Ty Rattie. It’s unclear if this was a mutual termination or if Rattie was cut from the team, but either way the 26-year-old winger will be looking for a new place to play. The news comes as a surprise, as Rattie has recorded nine points in 16 games for Lokomotiv and was part of a strong core group of former NHLers alongside Stephane Da Costa, Anton Lander, and Jakub Nakladal. The KHL is no stranger to payroll problems, which may have led to Rattie’s release, but one would think that the team could have traded him instead. Thus, it is more likely that Rattie requested his contract be terminated to go play elsewhere. After a career-high 50 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers last season, it very well could be that Rattie feels he belongs in North America and has been waiting for an opportunity. Stay tuned to this story to see what comes next for the former second-round pick.
  • Going the other way is big, two-way forward Connor Brickley. Brickley had a difficult summer, failing to find an NHL contract despite a full season with the Florida Panthers in 2017-18 and a nice stretch run with the New York Rangers last year. On top of that, he failed to turn PTO’s with both the Rangers and their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, into a contract. As a result, Brickley has decided to take his talents to Germany. EC Salzburg of the Austrian-based EBEL has announced a one-year contract with Brickley. A high-scoring AHLer and a veteran of 81 NHL games, Brickley immediately becomes the most decorated player on the Red Bulls’ roster and should provide a major boost to the team this year. Brickley likely hopes that a dominant performance in the EBEL will be enough to garner more attention in North America next off-season.

Vitali Kravtsov Headed To KHL

October 25, 2019 at 11:44 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

New York Rangers prospect Vitali Kravtsov won’t be playing in the minor leagues much longer, but that doesn’t mean he’s on his way to the NHL. The young forward will exercise his European Assignment Clause to return to the KHL and sign with Traktor Chelyabinsk, according to Larry Brooks of the New York Post.

It is important to note that this does not void his entry-level contract and the Rangers will retain control of Kravtsov. In fact, they could actually recall him from the KHL at any point this season if they want to bring him to the NHL. It does not mean that they will have to fight to convince him to come back over next season.

For the player, the reasoning for this move is obvious. Kravtsov had played just five games for the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL this season, sitting as a healthy scratch for one game and being benched for long stretches of several others. In the KHL he will likely be given a bigger opportunity, though the Rangers will not have as much control over his development.

Selected ninth overall in 2018, there are few prospects in the league that posses as much upside as Kravtsov. The 19-year old winger has a long reach and staggering puck skills, but can fall into the habit of staying to the outside and not contributing when he is away from the puck.

Andrei Markov Signs In KHL

October 24, 2019 at 9:29 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

After a NHL return attempt failed to produce a contract this summer, Andrei Markov has returned to the KHL. Lokomotiv Yaroslavl announced today that Markov has signed a trial contract with them, keeping him overseas for the time being. The 40-year old defenseman had expressed a desire to return to the NHL, but never did land a new contract.

The long time Montreal Canadiens star left for the KHL in 2017 after 990 regular season NHL games, and actually won a Gagarin Cup with Kazan Ak-Bars in his first year back in Russia. One of the most successful and decorated Russian defensemen of all-time, Markov has three championships in his home country, three World Championship medals, a World Junior silver and took part in multiple NHL All-Star games.

Selected in the sixth round of the 1998 draft, Markov quickly became a household name after making the move to the NHL, and was one of the most consistent two-way defenders in the league for some time. Racking up 572 points over his career, he is tied with Guy Lapointe for second among all Montreal defensemen, only trailing the great Larry Robinson.
