Oilers Claim Alec Regula Off Waivers From Bruins

Dec. 11: It turns out Regula may get an NHL opportunity sooner than he thought. The Oilers announced that they’ve claimed him off waivers from Boston, opening the door for him to play his first NHL action in well over a year in the coming days. Edmonton had a pair of open roster spots, so no corresponding move is necessary. For now, he’ll slot in as the eighth defenseman on Edmonton’s roster and will compete for depth minutes with players like Ty Emberson, Travis Dermott and Troy Stecher.

Dec. 10: The Bruins activated depth defenseman Alec Regula from season-opening injured reserve on Tuesday and subsequently placed him on waivers for the purpose of assignment to AHL Providence, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Regula, 24, has yet to play this season after sustaining a knee injury over the offseason. It held him out of the entirety of Boston’s training camp and preseason schedule and earned him a non-roster designation when the regular season began.

It was an inauspicious start to the 2024-25 campaign for Regula, who spent all of last season in the minors after seeing NHL ice in his previous three professional seasons. Acquired from the Blackhawks in the 2023 Taylor Hall/Nick Foligno trade, Regula led the AHL last season with a +36 rating and added four goals and 26 points in 55 games for Providence, tying his previous career highs.

When Regula can expect to touch NHL ice next is anybody’s guess. The 6’4″, 211-lb righty made 22 NHL appearances while with Chicago, scoring one goal and logging a -5 rating while averaging 16:54 per game. Initially a 2018 third-round pick of the Red Wings, he’s firmly established himself as a top two-way threat at the AHL level, but has yet to demonstrate marginally positive possession impacts in his NHL minutes.

There are likely a few names ahead of Regula that are in line for a recall, namely Ian Mitchell, who leads Providence defenders in scoring with 13 points in 22 games. Whether or not he ends up seeing NHL action during the one-year, two-way deal he inked last summer remains to be seen, although a strong showing in his delayed start to the season should help him at least earn a qualifying offer at season’s end.

Evening Notes: Arvidsson, Allen, Whitecloud, Sasson

Edmonton Oilers winger Viktor Arvidsson has resumed skating for the first time since exiting the lineup last month with an undisclosed injury, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch shared with Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic. Knoblauch added that the hope is that Arvidsson will return to team practices next week. Little about the veteran winger’s injury has been revealed. He played through 14 minutes of ice time in his most recent game – an overtime win over the Islanders on November 12th. The Oilers announced Arvidsson as banged up shortly after that game, designating him as day-to-day. He was placed on injured reserve nine days later, and has since missed Edmonton’s last 11 games.

Arvidsson signed a two-year, $8MM contract with Edmonton this summer, but hasn’t found his footing in the new setting just yet. He’s played in 16 games and scored five points this season, though the bulk of that scoring came from a three-assist night against Pittsburgh on October 25th. Arvidsson has scored two goals in eight games since then, but still sits far away from the 31-goal season he managed in 2016-17. Repeated lower-body injuries held Arvidsson out of all but 18 games with the Los Angeles Kings last season, though he still managed an impressive 15 points. He’ll look to return to the lineup, and quickly rediscover his scoring kick, before the calendar turns over.

Other notes around the league:

  • New Jersey Devils goaltender Jake Allen is questionable for the team’s Tuesday game against Toronto per a team announcement. No specifics were provided as to what may limit the veteran backup. Allen was on the wrong side of a shutout on Sunday, allowing three goals on 22 shots in the Devils’ 4-0 loss to Colorado. Despite the losing efforts, Allen’s season-long stat line has been more encouraging – with a 5-4-1 record and .904 save percentage through 10 games. New Jersey would need to recall a backup for Jacob Markstrom should Allen miss Tuesday’s game. Utica Comets starter Nico Daws would likely stand as the next man up. Daws has three wins and a .897 in 13 AHL games this season.
  • Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Zach Whitecloud returned to full practices on Monday shares Jesse Granger of The Athletic. It’s the next step towards a return after Whitecloud returned to practices with a no-contact jersey on Friday. Head coach Bruce Cassidy told Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review-Journal that Whitecloud is expected to play at some point on Vegas’ upcoming three-game road trip. The 28-year-old defender has two points, 14 penalty minutes, and a +5 through 21 games this season; while operating out of a bottom-four role. He’ll be quickly slotted back into the lineup when back to full health, likely bumping Kaedan Korczak to the press box.
  • The Vancouver Canucks are taking advantage of their off-days, assigning waiver-exempt forward Max Sasson to the minor leagues to help accrue cap space ahead of their Tuesday night game. Sasson made his NHL debut earlier this season and has since recorded two assists and a +2 in seven games. The 24-year-old has operated from Vancouver’s fourth-line, and is likely to return with a call-up before the Canucks’ next game. If he does stay in the minors, he’ll be returning to an AHL stat line featuring four goals, nine points, and six penalty minutes through nine games.

Canadiens, Oilers Complete Minor Swap

Two of the league’s storied Canadian franchises have gotten together on a minor-league deal. According to a press release from the Montreal Canadiens, the former is sending forward Jacob Perreault to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Noel Hoefenmayer.

Hoefenmayer is an older prospect being drafted with the 108th overall pick of the 2017 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes. He transitioned to professional hockey for the 2020-21 season but spent much of his first two years in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ ECHL affiliates.

The last three years have given Hoefenmayer more consistent playing in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies and Bakersfield Condors. He scored 11 goals and 38 points in 65 games for the Marlies in 2022-23 while adding 114 PIMs. His move to Bakersfield has been far less productive scoring only eight goals and 25 points in 58 games with the Condors.

Perreault is the only player in the swap to make his NHL debut. He was originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks organization and selected 27th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. He fell out of favor rather quickly in Anaheim, largely due to his defensive inefficiencies, and was traded to the Canadiens this past March for fellow 2020 draftee, Jan Mysak.

The deal is between two teams heading in different directions in the AHL standings. The Laval Rocket are fourth overall in the league standings with a 14-6-1 record through 21 games while the Condors sit in 25th with a 7-8-2-1 record through 18.

Oilers Notes: Hyman, Arvidsson, Stecher

Oilers goal-scorer Zach Hyman will return to the lineup tonight against the Blue Jackets after missing five games with an undisclosed injury, Tony Brar of Oilers TV reports.

Hyman will return to his usual top-line role alongside Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and take first power-play unit reps, Brar adds. The 32-year-old was having an incredibly tough time before the injury, limited to three goals and eight points in 20 games after scoring a career-high 54 goals last season.

He was shooting at just 5.9%, a trend that will surely reverse as the season progresses, given his 13.4% career average. The Oilers went 3-2-0 without Hyman in the lineup and sit fifth in the Pacific Division with a 13-10-2 record, although they could leapfrog the Flames for fourth place tonight if they win against Columbus and Calgary drops its game against the Blues.

Here’s more out of Edmonton:

  • Viktor Arvidsson has already missed nearly a month with a similarly undisclosed injury. After being listed as day-to-day for weeks, head coach Kris Knoblauch said today that he’s been downgraded to indefinite (via Brar). Knoblauch said Arvidsson’s injury “hasn’t been healing as we hoped,” not a promising proclamation for a player who only had five points in 16 games prior to getting hurt. He’s on regular injured reserve, but after missing tonight’s game, he’ll be eligible for a retroactive LTIR placement if Edmonton needs some additional short-term salary cap flexibility.
  • Defenseman Troy Stecher will be on hand against Columbus after leaving Tuesday’s loss to the Golden Knights after taking a Tomáš Hertl shot to the ear, reports Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic. The 30-year-old depth piece has three points in his last four games and has slowly become more of a regular fixture for Edmonton, last serving as a healthy scratch on Nov. 3. In 21 appearances this season, he has three assists with a -3 rating. He’s averaging 14:46 per game, and the Oilers are controlling 50% of shot attempts with him on the ice at even strength.

Oilers Reassign Drake Caggiula

The Oilers announced early Wednesday that they reassigned left-winger Drake Caggiula to AHL Bakersfield.

Caggiula, 30, had played in Edmonton’s last five games after being recalled for the second time this season in mid-November. The veteran depth piece did not record a point during that span and averaged 7:11 per game with a -1 rating, 5 PIMs, and four shots.

The former Oilers undrafted free agent signing out of North Dakota has an assist in seven NHL games this season between call-ups, his first in two years after spending all last season on assignment to Bakersfield. He’s in year two of his second stint in the Oilers organization after achieving journeyman status around the turn of the decade, recording stints with the Blackhawks, Coyotes, Sabres, and Penguins after spending the first two-and-a-half seasons of his professional career in Edmonton.

Caggiula has filled in for the past couple of weeks as wingers Viktor Arvidsson and Zach Hyman remain out with undisclosed injuries. Since they haven’t implicated him in paper transactions as of late, his demotion could be a sign that one or both could return tomorrow against the Blue Jackets, or that they plan on dressing 11 forwards and seven defensemen.

A high-energy presence, Caggiula has continued performing as a legitimate offensive impact piece in the minors. He has five goals and nine points in 12 games for Bakersfield this season after recording 37 points in 43 games last year.

After clearing waivers at the beginning of the regular season, Caggiula is nearing the end of his temporary exemption. He can play three more games or remain on the active roster for nine more days until he needs waivers again to return to Bakersfield.

Zach Hyman Won't Return Tonight

  • Zach Hyman’s absence from the Edmonton Oilers will reportedly enter its fifth game tonight (X Link). Edmonton is lucky it’s only been five games for Hyman but the team had a five-game break at the end of November to lean on. Still, on the opposite side of a 50-goal campaign, the Oilers could use Hyman’s goal-scoring touch back in the lineup if they hope to stay competitive in a tough Pacific Division.

Jeff Skinner Fined For Embellishment

  • The NHL announced that Oilers winger Jeff Skinner has been fined $2K for embellishment. It’s the second time he has been flagged for that this season with the first only drawing a warning.  The 32-year-old has struggled in his first year with Edmonton, notching just four goals and four assists in 24 games while averaging just 13:38 per game, a career-low ATOI.

Arvidsson To Miss At Least Three More Games

  • Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch told reporters including Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic (Twitter link) that winger Viktor Arvidsson won’t suit up on their current road trip, meaning he’ll miss the next three games. The 31-year-old has missed the last six games due to an undisclosed injury and is currently on injured reserve.  Arvidsson is in his first season with Edmonton after signing a two-year, $8MM contract over the summer.  However, he’s off to a quiet start with just two goals and three assists in 16 games.

Oilers Recall Drake Caggiula

As expected, Drake Caggiula’s stint in the minors was short-lived.  The team announced today (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled the veteran forward from AHL Bakersfield.

Edmonton re-assigned the 30-year-old back to the minors on Monday alongside defenseman Josh Brown (who notably wasn’t brought back up this time around).  With the Oilers off until Friday, the demotions allowed them to exit LTIR for a few days and bank a bit of cap space.  While Caggiula is on a contract for the league minimum of $775K, his remaining money is still more than the $382K they can afford per PuckPedia which means they’ll be back into using LTIR once the recall officially hits their books on Friday.

Caggiula has played in four games with Edmonton so far this season, all within the last four weeks.  He has one assist in those outings while averaging a little over eight minutes a night of playing time while also spending time in a reserve role.  He’s likely to still have a limited role on this stint with the Oilers as well.  While he was held off the scoresheet on Wednesday, Caggiula has been much more productive with the Condors, recording five goals and four helpers so far.

With the recall, Edmonton’s roster now stands at 22 players, one below the limit.  With them now back in LTIR, it wouldn’t be surprising to see that spot get filled in the near future.

Caggiula And Brown Assigned To Bakersfield

  • The Oilers have reassigned defenseman Josh Brown and forward Drake Caggiula to AHL Bakersfield. Brown has been shuffled back and forth in recent days while Caggiula was recalled back on Thursday.  Edmonton is off until Friday and the moves allow them to dip out of using LTIR and bank a small amount of cap space for the next few days.  At least one of them, if not both, will likely be recalled later in the week.
