Mark Borowiecki Suspended Two Games

Ottawa Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki has been suspended for two games for boarding Kings winger Tyler Toffoli on Saturday. He received a major penalty for the hit, which incited a scrum. Toffoli left the game, but later returned.

Borowiecki will miss Sunday’s game in Anaheim and Wednesday’s home game against San Jose. Borowiecki is eligible to return to the lineup on Saturday when New Jersey visits the Senators.

As Director of Player Safety Patrick Burke explains in the suspension video, “Toffoli comes back into his defensive zone to retrieve the puck. Toffoli sees Borowiecki coming, and turns his back to protect the puck. With sufficient time to avoid or minimize the hit, Borowiecki instead forcefully hits through Toffoli’s numbers, driving him dangerously into the glass.”

Borowiecki has one assist and is -1 in 28 games this season, while averaging 13:42 per game.

The Edmonton Oilers’ Backup Situation

Following the Oilers spectacular 6-5 loss on Thursday night, much digital ink has been spilled about their backup goaltending. Jonas Gustavsson allowed six goals on 31 shots as the Oilers blew a pair of two-goal leads.

GM Peter Chiarelli signed Gustavsson on July 1 to a one-year, $800K contract to serve as backup to Cam Talbot. While Gustavsson is thought to be a good guy on the bench, his career numbers (0.902 SV%, 2.87 GAA) are well below league-average. His numbers through six appearances this season are even worse: his 0.893 SV% and 2.90 GAA rank fifth-last among goaltenders who have played at least six games. Gustavsson has just one win this year, back in early November in his first start with the club.

OilersNation writer Jonathan Willis wrote that the Oilers should quickly move on from Gustavsson, pointing out that “if he’d made one extra save last night—and given the number of bad goals he surrendered, it’s easy to imagine that… That would work out to [his career] save percentage of 0.902.”

Based on his usage of Talbot and Gustavsson, it’s clear that coach Todd McLellan has little faith in his backup. Talbot has played two more games than any other goalie in the NHL at 26. He’s on pace to start 71 games, which would be the highest since Braden Holtby started 73 back in 2014-15. Meanwhile Gustavsson has only started four games, all of which were part of back-to-back situations.

Willis wrote that the best defense of the signing was that the Oilers have faith in their minor league starter, Laurent Brossoit. Brossoit has progressed very well in his three seasons as their AHL starter. His save percentage has risen from 0.918 to 0.920 to a sparkling 0.927 this season. The only concern that the Oilers may have about Brossoit is the expansion draft. Because Brossoit is eligible to be selected, bringing him to the NHL and showing him off may prompt Vegas to pick him. However, this would mean the Oilers would be able to keep Brandon Davidson, the most likely player to be taken by the Golden Knights. As well, the Oilers have another AHL goalie, Nick Ellis, who has played very well in his eight games with a 0.931 SV% to take over the mantle in Bakersfield.

If not Brossoit, the Oilers could possibly take a look at Reto Berra, who’s buried behind Roberto Luongo and James Reimer in Florida, or even swap struggling backups with Leafs and see if a change of scenery helps Jhonas Enroth.

Josh Jooris Claimed By Arizona

Just two days after trading for Peter Holland, the Arizona Coyotes have made another cheap addition at center, claiming Josh Jooris on waivers from the New York Rangers, according to Chris Johnston.

The 26-year-old center has just two points (1-1-2) in 12 games with the Rangers this season. He signed a one-year contract worth $600K back in July after not receiving a qualifying offer from the Calgary Flames. Jooris was an undrafted free agent signing by the Flames back in 2013. He played two seasons at the NHL level, scoring 37 points in 119 games. Unfortunately for the Rangers, Jooris has been unable to find success in New York. He’s averaging less than 10 minutes per game in his last five appearances.

With the Coyotes missing Brad Richardson for the foreseeable future, and Martin Hanzal on the trade block, GM John Chayka will need Holland and Jooris to be solid NHLers as Dylan Strome and Christian Dvorak develop into dependable contributors.

Snapshots: Raanta, Blackhawks, Player Safety Meetings

New York Rangers backup Antti Raanta will make his third straight start in favor or Henrik Lundqvist on Sunday afternoon.

Raanta has won two straight, allowing just one goal. He beat the Jets 2-1 before shutting out his former team, the Chicago Blackhawks 1-0 on Friday. He’s made 43 saves in those two games.

Raanta’s two game streak comes just as Lundqvist is hitting a dry streak. He’s lost two of his last three appearances, which included an ugly goal from center ice against the Sabres; he’s allowed 10 goals in those three games.

While there’s no danger of Raanta permanently displacing Lundqvist in the Rangers net, he’s certainly picked a good time to get hot. The Rangers brought in Raanta to replace current Oilers starting goalie Cam Talbot in 2015. After a disappointing early playoff exit in which he was torched for 15 goals in five games, the Rangers appear to be giving Lundqvist more rest throughout the regular season to keep the 34-year-old fresh for the playoffs.

  • Despite being ruled out of tonight’s game against the Dallas Stars, Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews returned to the ice 0n Sunday morning, according to Tracey Meyers of CSN Chicago. Toews hadn’t skated in a week before this morning’s optional skate, and has missed the previous eight games. NHL.com writer Brian Hedger reported that Toews was first on the ice and last man off.
  • Another couple injured Blackhawks are inching closer to their returns as well. Defenseman Brent Seabrook missed Friday’s 1-0 overtime loss against the Rangers, and will also be out of the lineup tonight. However, Seabrook told Chris Hine of the Chicago Tribune that he plans on going on the Blackhawks upcoming road trip.
  • Goaltender Corey Crawford, who has been out since an appendectomy on December 2, is also making progress in his recovery. Coach Joel Quenneville told Meyers that Crawford is “doing all right,” but that it will take some time to “get him back to square one.” The initial diagnosis was around three weeks, which would mean Crawford will be out until just after Christmas.
  • Meanwhile, Mark Stepneski reports that Dallas Stars defenseman Jamie Oleksiak will be meeting with NHL Player Safety later today to discuss his high hit on the Flyers’ Chris Vande Velde during Saturday afternoon’s game. Oleksiak was not penalized on the play. Fellow defenseman Mark Borowiecki will also have a hearing today after the Senators defenseman boarded Kings winger Tyler Toffoli. Borowiecki received a major penalty for the hit.

Toronto Wins Jared Cowen Arbitration Case

The Toronto Maple Leafs have won their arbitration case with defenseman Jared Cowen, according to multiple hockey insiders including Elliotte Friedman and Bob McKenzie.

Cowen will remain an unrestricted free agent, as Toronto’s buyout of his contract was deemed legal. Back in January, Frank Seravalli of TSN reported that a buyout of Cowen’s contract would give a team a $650K cap credit for 2016-17, and count for $750K against the cap in 2017-18.

Shortly thereafter, the Maple Leafs acquired Cowen in the Dion Phaneuf trade. Cowen did not play a single game for Toronto as GM Lou Lamorellio sent him home to home await a buyout in March; Cowen’s agent was given permission to speak with other teams about signing as a UFA. Cowen was sent home because the CBA  stipulates that an injured player cannot be bought out, so the Maple Leafs did not want to risk him re-injuring his hip and being unable to be bought out. However, Cowen and his agent grieved the eventual buyout for that exact reason: they believed he was hurt and therefore ineligible to be bought out.

The two sides met with the arbitrator on October 19, and ultimately the arbitrator ruled that there was no evidence that Cowen was unfit to play when the Maple Leafs bought him out in July.

Prior to this decision, Cowen was a free agent in the eyes of the NHL. He remains free to sign with any team, and the Maple Leafs remain at 48 contracts with the cap credit for this season.

 

Friedman’s Latest: Cap, Islanders, Purcell, Cowen

In the latest edition of his wonderful 30 Thoughts column, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman touched on a wide variety of topics of interest to hockey fans, including where the salary cap is expected to land for the 2017-18 season.

  • At this month’s GM meetings, managers are expecting to receive a preliminary number for the salary cap. Friedman reported that a couple GMs are “hoping for $75MM.”
    That would be an increase of $2MM over the current $73MM ceiling. Last summer, the cap went up by just $1.6MM, which was a smaller increase than what most teams were expecting, and also one of the smaller increases in cap history. The cap has risen by more than $3MM six times since it was implemented in 2005-06.
  • After discussing the New York Islanders management situation, Friedman joked that “one day I’m going to ply GM Garth Snow with enough truth serum to find out how hard he planned to go after Steven Stamkos, what he was going to offer, and how that affected his July 1, 2016 decisions.”
    The off-season did not go as planned for the Islanders, who lost Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen to free agency and replaced them with Andrew Ladd and Jason Chimera. Ladd has just three goals and six points this season, and is signed for seven years. He’s a prominent member of Pro Hockey Rumors’ 2016 UFA All-Bust Team.
  • As we speculated when he was placed on waivers, the Los Angeles Kings had tried to trade Teddy Purcell before placing him on waivers. However, they were not willing to take a contract back, as we suggested most teams would offer. Friedman suggested Ottawa could have interest, as Purcell previously played for Senators head coach Guy Boucher when the pair were in Tampa Bay, but it doesn’t work at the moment for budget reasons. Friedman says he “wouldn’t be surprised if someone takes a chance” later in the season
  • Finally, with Jared Cowen’s arbitration result due to come later today, Friedman pointed out that a Cowen win would “wreak havoc” on next year’s cap for the Maple Leafs because of rookie bonus overages. Currently Cowen’s buyout is a $650K cap credit for Toronto, but that could change to a $3.1MM cap hit depending on whether or not the arbitrator deems Cowen was healthy enough to buy-out in the summer (numbers via Cap Friendly).

Red Wings Activate Jimmy Howard

The Detroit Red Wings have taken goaltender Jimmy Howard off Injured Reserve, the team announced Wednesday.

To make room on the roster, Detroit re-assigned goaltender Jared Coreau and forward Tomas Nosek to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.

Howard’s return should help the Red Wings as they try to climb back into a Wildcard position. While Petr Mrazek was expected to be the starter this season, he’s struggled with a 7-5-3 record and a below-average SV% of 0.907. Howard, initially thought to be relegated to the backup role, has a 0.940 SV% and a 1.82 GAA. Howard’s 5-5-0 record is much more indicative of the Red Wings’ scoring troubles than his play.

His return to form comes as Detroit must decide which goaltender to protect in the expansion draft. Because teams can only protect one goalie, common sense dictates that Detroit protects the younger and cheaper Mrazek. Howard, who makes $5.29MM, may have played his way onto the Vegas Golden Knights.

Coreau played his first NHL game during this recall, allowing four goals on 36 shots against the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins. His numbers are much better with the Griffins, and that’s where he headed. He’s trending towards becoming an NHL backup option, perhaps as soon as next season if Howard or Mrazek end up in Vegas.

Nosek, an undrafted free agent signing in 2014, did not make appear in any NHL games during this latest recall. He is around a point-per-game this season in the AHL after back-to-back seasons with 30-plus points. He’s been held pointless in six NHL games so far in his career, all played last season.

Jhonas Enroth Clears Waivers, Toronto Signs Karri Ramo To AHL Tryout

December 6: Enroth has cleared waivers, reports Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston (Twitter link).  He will be sent down to their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies; Antoine Bibeau has been recalled to take his place.

Unrestricted free agent goalie Karri Ramo, who has been skating with the Leafs over the last month as he recovers from ACL surgery, has inked a tryout deal with the Marlies, TSN’s Kristen Shilton adds (via Twitter).  This will only further fuel the speculation that Ramo’s eventual destination will be with the Maple Leafs as the new backup to Frederik Andersen once he’s back in playing shape.

December 5: The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed Jhonas Enroth on waivers, according to Elliotte Friedman.

Enroth has not won this year, with an 0-3-1 record in four starts and two relief appearances. He was expected to be a dependable backup who could play 20 games with good numbers. He’s signed for this season at $750K.

Enroth’s career numbers before this season were respectable for a backup, with a 0.911 SV% and a 2.80 GAA in seven years in the NHL. In his six appearances this season, he has a 0.872 SV% and goals-against average of just under four.

Coach Mike Babcock said Enroth “wasn’t playing well enough,” according to Mark Masters.

James Mirtle, Editor-in-chief of The Athletic Toronto, tweeted that the Maple Leafs only gave Enroth four starts, which Mirtle called “rough.” He expects the Leafs to go after Karri Ramo, who practiced with the team last month. Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reported Ramo is nearing medical clearance from his knee injury. Ramo’s career numbers in his current NHL stint are extremely similar to Enroth’s: they have the same SV% and a nearly identical GAAs.

In our ranking of the Top 50 UFAs last summer, Pro Hockey Rumors ranked Enroth 50th. We called him one of the best backup goalies in the NHL. Enroth signed with the Maple Leafs in late August.

Snapshots: NHL Three Stars, Grabner, Koivu

The NHL has named Steve Mason, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Martin Jones as the three stars of the week.

Mason went 4-0-0 with a 0.945 SV% and a 1.71 GAA. He made 120 saves in those four games. Mason’s great week has boosted the Flyers back into a wildcard spot. He’s one win away from tying his career-best winning streak. Mason now has a 9-8-3 record with a 0.908 SV% and a 2.76 GAA for the season. Prior to his hot week, he had a save percentage of 0.892, which is not good for a starting goalie.

Tarasenko had four goals and five points in four games as the Blues earned five of six possible points. He scored the overtime winner against Dallas on November 28th, and then potted a hat-trick on December 1 against the Lightning. His four points against Tampa Bay matched his career high. Tarasenko now has 27 points in 25 games, good for third in the NHL behind only Connor McDavid (34 points) and Nikita Kucherov (29 points).

Jones had a 3-0-0 record with a 0.962 SV% and a goals-against of 1.01. He allowed just one goal in each appearance, as the Sharks passed Edmonton for first in the Pacific Division. Jones is tied for second among goalies with 13 wins, and has a sparkling 0.924 SV% and 1.99 GAA with two shutouts.

  • The New York Rangers will be without Michael Grabner on Tuesday night. After the speedy winger practiced on the fourth defense pair with Adam Clendening, NHL Live host Jim Cerny tweeted that Grabner had a death in his family and will be a scratch against the Islanders. Grabner has been lights-out this year, with 13 goals in 26 games so far.
  • Wild captain Mikko Koivu had a tremendous game on Sunday night. He scored the overtime winner, dangling around Oilers goalie Jonas Gustavsson, but also won an astounding 91.3% of his face-offs (21/23). In a league where a face-off percentage higher than 50% is considered good, Koivu had an unreal night. He’s currently sitting at 55% on the season.

Alberta Notes: Gaudreau, McDavid

Johnny Gaudreau’s surprising return from a broken finger boosted the Calgary Flames in a big way.

Initially expected to be out until after Christmas, Gaudreau returned three weeks early in time for last night’s game against the Anaheim Ducks. He played on a line with Sam Bennett and Alex Chiasson. Wearing a newly-reinforced glove, Gaudreau scored on his first shot on his first shift, on his way to a two-point night in an 8-3 beatdown of the Ducks.

He also assisted on Chiasson’s second period goal, which was the second of three goals the Flames scored in just 1:27 to go up 4-1. Gaudreau played just thirty seconds less than his season-average, so there doesn’t appear to be much rust on him, despite missing just under three weeks.

The Ducks were playing their second game in two nights, having lost to the Oilers in overtime the night before. After John Gibson allowed three goals in the overtime loss to the Oilers, Jonathan Bernier was left in for all eight goals against the Flames. Post-game, Ducks coach Randy Carlyle was very specific when explaining decision by saying Gibson had a very specific flu-symptom and couldn’t go in the game.

Speaking of the Oilers, there was some minor controversy in their Sunday night OT loss to the Minnesota Wild. During the second period, Connor McDavid was tripped by Jared Spurgeon and hit his mouth on the ice. He briefly held his mouth, checking for blood, and then got back up and played the next shift. The Wild took another penalty, and McDavid jumped over the boards for the five-on-three, but was pulled from the game by the league’s concussion spotters. He missed the last six minutes of the second period and then returned for the third with no ill effects.

The normally reserved McDavid was vocal about his disappointment after the game. “I was pretty shocked, to be honest. I hit my mouth on the ice. You reach up and grab your mouth when you get hit in the mouth; it’s a pretty normal thing.”

“Obviously the spotter thought he knew how I was feeling. He pulled me off. A s**tty time of the game too. We had a bit of a partial five-on-three and then a power play late in the second game that if we had capitalized on that, it could have changed the game.”

The Oilers as a whole were upset about the decision, with Patrick Maroon and Milan Lucic being upset about it because it was clear that there were no averse symptoms. Lucic told Spector that he understands the liability issue, but was still upset that the Oilers “best player [wasn’t] out there… because he got hit in the mouth.”

Oilers fans were frustrated by the decision, because the previous night’s win over the Ducks saw shutdown center Ryan Kesler hit his head and stay down until a whistle was blown while he was penalty-killing. However, he got up and stayed out there for the rest of the penalty kill. Kesler does have a reputation for diving, but there still appears to be a disconnect between different spotters and what level of impact is required to pull a player.

Spector raises one last question about the incident, asking why neither 6’3, 217 lb Zack Kassian nor 6’4, 211 lb Kurtis Gabriel were pulled out for testing after spending a minute punching each other in the head. Spector believes if the NHL is serious about checking on its players’ brains, they should start checking players after fights.
