Coyotes’ Niklas Hjalmarsson To Retire

July 25, 2021 at 3:03 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 15 Comments

The career of one of the best defensive defensemen of the modern era is coming to an end. Craig Morgan of AZ Coyotes Insider reports that Arizona unrestricted free agent Niklas Hjalmarsson is set to retire after 14 NHL seasons. Morgan notes that the humble veteran is unlikely to make a formal announcement, but multiple sources have confirmed that Hjalmarsson’s NHL career has ended.

While Hjalmarsson is still a capable pro, this move should not come as much of a surprise. The 34-year-old has been in decline over the last few years, more or less since leaving the Chicago Blackhawks in 2017. This season, he refused to waive his No-Movement Clause ahead of the trade deadline, preferring to stay with his family in Arizona rather than compete for a Stanley Cup. It seems that his three titles with Chicago were enough for the respected veteran, and when that drive is gone the career doesn’t last much longer. Recently, rumors emerged that his family would be moving back to his native Sweden, again a sign that Hjalmarsson was ready to move on as well.

While Hjalmarsson never received the accolades of other top defenseman or even his other championship teammates with the Blackhawks, he was quietly one of the best defensive players in the NHL over much of his career. A player whose numbers don’t do him justice, Hjalmarsson played with elite hockey IQ and vision, rarely getting caught out of position. Hjalmarsson could single-handedly shut down an offensive rush or stymie a power play. An incredibly effective shot blocker, Hjalmarsson’s defensive zone presence was the stuff of nightmares for the opposition in his prime. While only ever contributing modest offense, not much of puck-mover, and not a noticeable physical presence, it didn’t matter – Hjalmarsson was an effective top-four defenseman all the same. A dependable player who ate minutes and took on difficult match-ups throughout his career, including 137 career playoff games, Hjalmarsson was a key piece of every team he played for.

While not unexpected, Hjalmarsson’s departure from Arizona is yet another confirmed absence from the Coyotes’ 2021-22 blue line, which is set to look very different. Arizona had seven defensemen play 40+ games this past season. Heading into the off-season, four of those were unrestricted free agents: Hjalmarsson, Alex Goligoski, Jason Demers, and Jordan Oesterle. A fifth, captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson, has since been traded. Hjalmarsson is now confirmed not to return and veterans Goligoski and Demers are not expected to return either. Depth defensemen Aaron Ness and Jordan Gross are also UFA’s and may not re-sign. Jakob Chychrun will lead a new unit that looks to include Shayne Gostisbehere, Ilya Lyubushkin, Kyle Capobianco, and rookie Victor Soderstrom. Chychrun will need to channel Hjalmarrson and other former teammates if he want to play the well-rounded game needed to become a bona fide No. 1  and leader of a young defense corps.

Carolina Hurricanes Re-Sign Spencer Smallman

July 25, 2021 at 1:14 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

The Carolina Hurricanes have taken care of business with a would-be restricted free agent. The team has announced that they have come to terms on a one-year contract extension with forward Spencer Smallman. Smallman has signed a two-way contract that pays him the minimum $750K in the NHL and $75$K in the AHL. The deal comes in slightly below Smallman’s $772K qualifying offer.

Smallman, 24, is still a ways away from seeing any of his NHL salary. Smallman is a gritty, hand-working forward with character, but it will take more than that to advance his career. Smallman was able to produce on talented QMJHL Champion Saint John Sea Dogs team in his final year of junior hockey in 2016-17, but has failed to make an impact at the pro level. The 2015 fifth-round pick has played in only 90 games total over four pro seasons, 65 in the AHL and 25 in the ECHL. Smallman has failed to assert himself as an AHL regular to this point, due in no small part to just three goals and 21 points in his AHL experience (compared to 27 points in 40 fewer ECHL games).

Yet, the Hurricanes like his work ethic enough to re-sign him to an NHL contact, believing that he can still work his way into becoming a potential depth option. With two other important RFA forwards in Andrei Svechnikov and Warren Foegele and just ten players total on one-way contracts heading into next year, Smallman was the least of Carolina’s worries this off-season. They can now move on and focus on what should be a busy summer.

Marc Staal Re-Signs With Detroit Red Wings

July 25, 2021 at 11:18 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The Detroit Red Wings are bringing back an experienced veteran, re-signing Marc Staal to a one-year contract. Staal was scheduled for unrestricted free agency on Wednesday. Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports that the deal is worth $2MM and includes a full no-movement clause.

Staal, 34, ended up in Detroit as part of a camp dump by the New York Rangers last fall, arriving along with a second-round pick for nothing more than future considerations. While the veteran defenseman wasn’t worth his full $5.7MM cap hit, he had a quietly strong season for the Red Wings. Now at 948 games played for his career, Staal should get over the 1,000-game mark next season, joining older brother Eric Staal and younger brother Jordan Staal. There have been a few more injuries along the way for the 6’4″ defenseman, and he may not get quite as many accolades as his brothers, but it’s still been a remarkable career.

Perhaps his most memorable moments came in New York during the 2012 and 2014 playoffs, when he reached the Conference and then Stanley Cup Finals with the Rangers. Part of an incredibly tough trio of defensemen with Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi, Staal was relied on for heavy minutes every night. Over his career, that’s been his calling card, as the offensive side never did really materialize. In 948 career games, Staal has recorded 198 points.

For the Red Wings, he can provide a steady hand to put in the lineup every night, insulating the young options that will still be developing. The team now has three veteran options in Staal, Nick Leddy and Danny DeKeyser, each signed only through the 2021-22 season. Should they want to, the Red Wings could likely find a contender for each of them at the deadline, and recoup even more future assets for the rebuild.

Bob McKenzie of TSN came out of retirement to break the news on Twitter.

Free Agent Focus: Tampa Bay Lightning

July 25, 2021 at 10:35 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

Free agency is now just a few days away and many teams are already looking ahead to when it opens up.  There will be several prominent players set to hit the open market in late July while many teams have key restricted free agents to re-sign as well. The Lightning have cleared a little bit of money through expansion, but still don’t have much to retain their pending free agents.

Key Restricted Free Agents

F Ross Colton – At the bottom of every Stanley Cup roster, there are always a few homegrown players that provide depth for a bargain bin cost. The Lightning have proven their development system can create NHL players out of almost anyone, and they did it again for fourth-round pick Ross Colton. The 24-year-old forward had 13 goals in 53 combined games, but none bigger than the one on July 7, tapping home a David Savard pass to put the Lightning ahead of the Montreal Canadiens. It would end up being the only goal they needed, meaning whatever happens from here, Colton has a Cup-winning goal on his resume. As an arbitration-eligible restricted free agent he may deserve a slight raise, but the Lightning simply don’t have the budget for one. It will be interesting to see if they can fit him in for really anything more than the $750K league minimum at this point.

D Cal Foote – Many were surprised last week when the Seattle Kraken decided to take Yanni Gourde in expansion instead of Foote. The 22-year-old defenseman was the 14th overall pick in 2017 and made his NHL debut this year, playing 35 games during the regular season. After some deadline additions, he failed to suit up for any playoff games, but will be in the running for the third pairing again next season. In fact, with Savard and Luke Schenn both pending free agents, the Lightning have only five defensemen under contract for the 2021-22 campaign. Foote’s opportunity is right in front of him, by accepting a short-term, low-salary deal (even potentially his qualifying offer) he stands the best chance of being in the NHL lineup every day.

Other RFAs: F Alex Barre-Boulet, F Taylor Raddysh, F Otto Somppi, F Boris Katchouk, F Ryan Lohin, D Sean Day

Key Unrestricted Free Agents:

F Blake Coleman – The value of a quality bottom-sixer is already in full view when linemate Barclay Goodrow signed a six-year, $21.85MM deal with the New York Rangers, and many would say Coleman is the better player. In fact, he might prove to be more than just a bottom-six free agent this summer, he might be the bottom-six free agent. A swiss army knife that can basically play any position on any line, Coleman has scored 13, 22, 21 and 14 goals in his four full NHL seasons, this year’s total coming in just 55 games. He can play in a scoring role, he’s one of the best penalty killers in the league, can create offense by himself thanks to blazing speed, and is physical enough to excel in the playoffs. It’s hard to not see Coleman getting a huge contract in the open market, given the term and money committed to Goodrow already. Zach Hyman–who may have some better offensive numbers thanks to his role in Toronto–is a relatively good comparison for Coleman and is on the verge of signing a seven-year deal in Edmonton.

D David Savard – Acquired at the deadline in a savvy salary cap move, Savard was exactly what the Lightning expected down the stretch and through the playoffs. Steady, quiet, play from the right side, Savard is the kind of second-pairing rock that every team could use. He doesn’t post incredible possession statistics, scored just six points this season and turns 31 in October, but you can bet there is a multi-year deal waiting for Savard that will price him out of Tampa Bay’s range. The four-year, $16MM contract that Adam Larsson signed in Seattle should be a good comparable, though the Kraken had the added benefit of negotiating against no one but Edmonton. It certainly wouldn’t be surprising to see Savard pass that number or even secure a longer deal after playing a key role en route to a Stanley Cup championship.

Other UFAs: F Luke Witkowski, F Boo Nieves, D Luke Schenn, D Brian Lashoff, D Ben Thomas, D Andreas Borgman, G Christopher Gibson, G Curtis McElhinney, G Anders Nilsson (retired),

Projected Cap Space

At least the Lightning are technically under the cap again after losing Gourde and seeing so many others scheduled for free agency. The team has over $80.7MM committed to just 17 players, meaning there will be more moves coming at some point. At least one and maybe two of the team’s expensive forwards will need to go, while the restricted free agents will have to sign for cheap or pack their bags. That’s the cost of putting together a two-time Stanley Cup roster, and there are drastic changes coming in Tampa Bay before the start of next season.

The Los Angeles Kings announced today that they re-signed forward Trevor Moore to a two-year contract extension. The deal is one-way and pays him $1.88MM per season, per CapFriendly.

Moore’s developed nicely for Los Angeles after being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2020. He’s posted 28 points in 71 games across two seasons with the Kings, scoring 13 goals. Now 26 years old, Moore likely doesn’t have anything more than third-line upside, but that’s where Moore likely slots in next season with Los Angeles’ young core. He’s an adequate two-way forward, and will likely focus on continuing the improvement of his defensive game.

Moore will be 28 at the expiration of the deal. He’ll be hitting unrestricted free agency, and Moore could definitely see a pay raise if he impresses with Los Angeles in the near future. Across 123 total NHL games, Moore’s scored 18 goals and 41 points. Moore’s only playoff experience came in 2019 with the Maple Leafs, playing in all seven games against the Boston Bruins in their First Round series that year. Moore scored one goal in those seven games.

Washington Capitals Goalie Craig Anderson Expected To Retire

July 24, 2021 at 6:57 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 4 Comments

Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said today that goalie Craig Anderson is expected to retire this offseason. 40 years old, Anderson retires after just one season in the nation’s capital.

Anderson leaves the NHL after one of the more underrated careers put together by a netminder in recent history. Playing in the league for 18 seasons, Anderson played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, and Washington, but will be most remembered for his 10-year stint with the Ottawa Senators. Anderson, drafted 73rd overall by Chicago in 2001 after re-entering the draft, bounced up and down between the NHL and minor leagues before securing a full-time job as the Panthers’ backup in 2007-08. After an impressive three total seasons in Florida (24-14-7, .928 SV%), Anderson found himself in a breakout situation with Colorado in 2009-10, starting 71 games, posting a .917 save percentage and finishing top-10 in both Hart Trophy and Vezina Trophy voting.

He put up another solid season the following year but got off to a shaky start in 2010-11, leading to Anderson being traded to Ottawa. Anderson’s best years came there, including a 2012-13 campaign in which he started 24 games and posted a .941 save percentage to lead the league, leading to him receiving more Vezina Trophy votes. Anderson’s career, however, fell sharply after helping the Sens to a surprise Eastern Conference Final appearance in 2017. Anderson won his only NHL award that season, the Masterton Trophy, after taking a hiatus from the game earlier that year to support his wife Nicholle, who was dealing with and has since recovered from a rare form of throat cancer.

Anderson signed a one-year deal with Washington this past season and served mainly as the team’s taxi squad netminder, posting a 2-1-0 record with a .915 save percentage.

East Notes: Leafs, Hamilton, Ovechkin

July 24, 2021 at 5:46 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 2 Comments

After the conclusion of today’s 2021 NHL Draft, there’s a variety of news and notes from post-draft press conferences emerging quickly. NHL.com’s Mike Zeisberger reports from general manager Kyle Dubas’ presser today that the Toronto Maple Leafs are still interested in retaining both Alex Galchenyuk and Frederik Andersen. Now 27, it’s been a long road for Galchenyuk, who was drafted third overall in 2012. After playing for five teams over the past three seasons, Galchenyuk caught what seemed like a new wind after his mid-season acquisition from the Ottawa Senators, scoring 12 points in 26 games with the Leafs. Consistently playing among the Leafs’ top-six forward core, Galchenyuk displayed solid complementary ability when surrounded by better talent. The Leafs will likely hope that he can bring affordable depth scoring again to the team in a middle-six role this time around, hopefully adding another top-end talent in the offseason. And while the team has interest in retaining Andersen in goal, it may not be mutual. Andersen, in any scenario in which he returns, takes a significant cut in both pay and games played, serving behind Jack Campbell. But if Andersen is willing to accept a backup role, the offseason could allow him to return to full health and be a crucial contributor to next year’s Toronto roster.

  • Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the Carolina Hurricanes are still trying to re-sign defenseman Dougie Hamilton, but that they’ll need an answer on a deal by the start of free agency on July 28th. TSN’s Darren Dreger follows up, saying that Hamilton is looking at an average annual value between $8MM and $9MM on his next deal. It’s interesting to note here that Hamilton isn’t looking for more money, especially considering the eight-year, $9.5MM AAV extension handed out yesterday to Seth Jones. Hamilton is on a five-year run of receiving Norris Trophy votes, including a career-high fourth-place finish this season. That’s in stark contrast to Jones, who’s coming off a weak season on both sides of the puck. Hamilton’s consistently posted better play-driving and defensive numbers throughout his career, as well. Regardless, Hamilton, who’s part of an elite class of defenders to hit unrestricted free agency in recent years, shouldn’t have any trouble getting his desired compensation, whether it be from Carolina or somewhere else.
  • The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir reports that Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan hopes to have a contract extension with captain Alex Ovechkin finalized by the opening of free agency on Wednesday. It’s once in a blue moon that we see a new contract for one of the best players in NHL history, but this offseason will surely see one for the 35-year-old Ovechkin. What’s not for certain is that Ovechkin sees a raise on his previous deal, one that was paying him $9.5MM per season. Despite still being one of the best goal-scorers in the league, Ovechkin’s now finished under a point-per-game pace in two straight seasons and missed significant time with injury this season for the first time since 2009-10. A decent comparable could be the contract handed out to teammate Nicklas Backstrom, who makes $9.2MM per season. While it likely won’t be as long of a term as Backstrom’s five years, a similar cap hit could be in line for ’Ovi’ this offseason.

2021 NHL Draft Results

July 24, 2021 at 5:05 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 74 Comments

It may not be a Tuesday in October, but it isn’t the fourth Friday in June either. The 2021 NHL Entry Draft will again be a unique event and it is about far more than just the date. With the COVID-19 pandemic restricting many draft-eligible prospects from competing in full seasons and in some cases at all, as well as limiting NHL scouts from live viewings, this is set to be a very unpredictable draft. While the class is not especially strong at the top, it is deep and teams could have very different opinions on top players based on their incomplete profiles. Some players expected to go early could fall, even by a round or two, while others taken with top picks could come as complete surprises. On top of that, the draft class has also expanded by seven picks, one per round for the NHL’s newest addition, the Seattle Kraken expansion franchise. Beginning on Friday night and through Saturday afternoon, 223 NHL hopefuls will hear their names called. Perhaps more than ever though, it is hard to predict where each of those 223 may fall.
