Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire Riley Nash

April 9, 2021 at 5:21 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

Riley Nash may not play again during the regular season, but he’s now in a situation where the playoffs could be a possibility. The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Riley Nash from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a conditional seventh-round selection in 2022. Nash is expected to miss four to six weeks with a sprained knee, meaning he essentially is a playoff pickup for the Maple Leafs. If he plays in 25% of the Maple Leafs’ playoff games this season, the seventh-round selection will become a sixth-rounder.

The veteran forward will likely be put on long-term injured reserve through the end of the season, meaning his cap hit is basically irrelevant to the Maple Leafs. Toronto had placed Frederik Andersen on LTIR earlier today as well, meaning the team can go further into the extra room with Nash placed there. Once the playoffs begin, the salary cap isn’t used, meaning Toronto could activate both players without penalty.

It may seem complicated, but at the end of the day, this is the Maple Leafs exercising their financial power to grab some added playoff depth at a very low cost. Nash may not even be ready to contribute this season, but for just a seventh-round pick it’s a worthwhile gamble. The 31-year-old center isn’t much of an offensive presence, with just two goals and seven points through 37 games this season, but has long been lauded for his checking abilities and defensive prowess.

For Columbus, getting anything back for an expiring contract that wasn’t going to play again this season is a win, though obviously, they would have rather moved him without the injury involved. The Blue Jackets aren’t technically out of the playoff race in the Central Division, but after losing Nash, Boone Jenner, and Zach Werenski over the last few days, things aren’t looking good.

This move does not take Toronto out of the running for another forward, in fact, it could give them even more cap flexibility depending on Andersen’s injury situation. GM Kyle Dubas has been open about his desire to improve the club with rentals, pushing some chips to the middle in this unique season.

COVID Protocol Related Absences: 04/09/21

April 9, 2021 at 4:08 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 Protocol. Here is the list for today:

Boston – Jaroslav Halak
Colorado – Bowen Byram*
Los Angeles – Matt Roy
Montreal – Joel Armia
Ottawa – Jacob Bernard-Docker, Shane Pinto
Toronto – William Nylander
Vancouver – Travis Boyd, Jalen Chatfield, Thatcher Demko, Alexander Edler, Adam Gaudette, Travis Hamonic, Jayce Hawryluk, Nils Hoglander, Braden Holtby, Bo Horvat, Quinn Hughes, Zack MacEwen, Marc Michaelis, Tyler Motte, Tyler Myers, Antoine Roussel, Nate Schmidt, Brandon Sutter, Jake Virtanen
Winnipeg – TBA

As a reminder, inclusion on this list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

Players removed today: None

Earlier today the Avalanche canceled morning skate because of a positive test result. Their game tonight against the Ducks is still currently scheduled to continue, though obviously, Byram won’t be part of it.

Otherwise, another good day for the NHL as the Canucks have not added anyone to the protocol. Vancouver GM Jim Benning and team physician Jim Bovard spoke with the media today and explained that the team is “moving away from the new infection phase” and starting recovery. The Canucks remain optimistic that their season can continue at some point in the near future.

Oilers GM Holland: “I’m Not Going To Trade A First For A Rental”

April 9, 2021 at 3:27 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 22 Comments

When the Edmonton Oilers put Kyle Turris on waivers today, speculation immediately sparked up that the team was preparing to go after one of the bigger names available at the trade deadline. The Oilers can bury part of Turris’ cap hit by moving him to the taxi squad and with Oscar Klefbom on long-term injured reserve, they have a bit of flexibility. Immediately, the thought of Taylor Hall returning to Edmonton popped into many minds, but if the Buffalo Sabres are holding out for a first-round pick, the struggling forward won’t be coming to the Oilers.

Edmonton GM Ken Holland spoke with reporters today and was clear about his limits:

I’m not going to trade a first for a rental. Maybe if the player had some term, I’d be open to it.

By a first, Holland is referring to a first-round draft pick, something he isn’t willing to move for a player on an expiring contract. That would include Hall, who signed a one-year $8MM deal with the Sabres in a unique offseason. According to previous reports, Buffalo GM Kevyn Adams has been looking for a first in any discussions on the enigmatic winger, but that is certainly not guaranteed at this point.

The New Jersey Devils did recently secure a first-round pick in trade, but that was for both Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac. They had to retain salary on both players as well, making them cost a combined $5.2MM against the cap for the New York Islanders. Even if the Sabres were to retain half of Hall’s deal, he’d still come in at $4MM for the Oilers or whoever acquires him before Monday’s deadline.

There are other rentals potentially out there as well, but it’s not clear exactly how many of them would fetch a first in a normal year, let alone this one that seems to have a heavy buyers’ market. Mike Hoffman, Nick Foligno and Scott Laughton are all good players, but it would be hard to justify handing over a first-round pick—especially when they would have to quarantine for at least a week before joining the Oilers north of the border.

The interesting thought is whether Holland—who also said the art of the deadline is just like poker—is speaking truthfully or attempting to bluff his way into a lower asking price in some negotiation. Giving that information publicly wasn’t needed and should draw even more eyeballs to the Oilers as a team to watch over the next 72 hours.

Nashville Predators Issue Injury Updates

April 9, 2021 at 2:25 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

A few weeks ago the Nashville Predators were being written off as deadline sellers with no chance at the postseason. Now, after an incredible 11-2 run since the middle of March, the team holds the final playoff spot in the Central Division. GM David Poile’s confidence in his group has paid off, but his resolve to hold onto his deadline chips will be tested once again.

The Predators have issued several injury updates today. Eeli Tolvanen and Dante Fabbro are now both considered week-to-week with their respective injuries, while Mathieu Olivier will be out four to six weeks with a lower-body injury. The team has placed Filip Forsberg on injured reserve after also being listed as week-to-week recently.

As Adam Vingan of The Athletic points out, the list of injured for the Predators has grown quite long. Forsberg, Fabbro, Tolvanen, Matt Duchene, Mark Borowiecki, Brad Richardson, Ryan Ellis, and Luca Sbisa are all week-to-week, while Alexandre Carrier (3-5 weeks) and Olivier are out even longer. That’s an incredible amount of talent watching from the trainer’s table while the team tries to hold onto this newly found playoff position.

Things won’t get easier down the stretch for Nashville either. The team will take on the Tampa Bay Lightning tomorrow and still have seven games after that against the top three teams in the division. With the Chicago Blackhawks still close on their heels and the Dallas Stars starting to show signs of life, the Predators can’t afford any type of stumble down the stretch.

Zach Werenski To Miss Rest Of Season

April 9, 2021 at 2:04 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Columbus Blue Jackets are losing key players daily. This time it is Zach Werenski who will miss the rest of the regular season. The star defenseman will undergo surgery next week to repair a sports hernia that he has been playing through much of the season. GM Jarmo Kekalainen explained that the decision to have surgery now will allow Werenski to be at full strength in time for training camp in the fall.

Werenski joins Boone Jenner and Riley Nash on the sidelines as the deadline approaches, with all three players likely done for the rest of the regular season. Given the team is also holding David Savard out in anticipation of a trade, the Blue Jackets season is all but over. The team now sits just six points ahead of the Detroit Red Wings for last place in the Central Division, though technically are also just seven points out of a playoff spot.

This will go down as a lost season for Werenski despite his strong production of late. The 23-year-old defenseman will end the year with seven goals and 20 points in 35 games, averaging more than 24 minutes a night for the first time in his career.

Notably, Werenski is under contract with the Blue Jackets for just one more season and will reach restricted free agency in the summer of 2022. At that point, he will be coming off a $7MM salary and since his contract was signed before the new CBA rules came into effect, just his qualifying offer will match that $7MM. Of course, he will also be eligible for arbitration, a place where his outstanding counting stats will provide plenty of leverage. Since entering the league in 2016-17 as a teenager, Werenski ranks third among all defenders in goals with 65, behind only Brent Burns and Dougie Hamilton.

Winnipeg Jets Sign Simon Lundmark

April 9, 2021 at 12:57 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Winnipeg Jets have signed one of their 2019 draft picks, inking Simon Lundmark to a three-year entry-level contract. Lundmark has spent the last several seasons with Linkopings HC in the Swedish Hockey League. The contract will carry an average annual value of $925K.

Selected 51st overall by the Jets two years ago, the 20-year-old defenseman has continued his development overseas, scoring 10 points in 47 games with Linkopings this season. Scott Wheeler of The Athletic ranked him 15th in the Jets system as recently as January, saying that though he doesn’t have a “dynamic quality,” is still above average in most areas.

Obviously given his age there is still room for growth, but Lundmark has never really been among the top prospects in Sweden. Still, the Jets obviously see enough to hand him an entry-level deal and bring him into the organization.

Bobby Ryan Expected To Miss Rest Of Season

April 9, 2021 at 11:24 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The Detroit Red Wings have one fewer trade chip for Monday’s deadline. The team announced today that Bobby Ryan is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with an upper-body injury. Ryan is a pending unrestricted free agent.

It’s a brutal end to the year for Ryan, who was on something of a comeback tour this season after going through difficult times in Ottawa. The 34-year-old forward had seven goals and 14 points in 33 games for the Red Wings and could have ended up on a contender at the deadline. Instead, he’ll now have to head into an uncertain offseason once again without a contract.

Hopefully, Ryan is able to recover and return to the NHL next season, but for players of his age season-ending ailments are never a positive sign. Over a long successful career, the veteran forward has suited up in 866 regular season games, scored 569 points, and won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2020.

For Detroit, losing Ryan isn’t ideal, but he wasn’t expected to bring back a premium asset anyway. The team is perhaps missing out on a mid-round pick, but GM Steve Yzerman has plenty of other trade chips to use—not to mention already owns six selections in the first three rounds this year.

Buffalo Sabres Claim Drake Caggiula

April 9, 2021 at 11:04 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, the Buffalo Sabres have claimed Drake Caggiula off waivers, seeing the obvious value in an experienced forward that makes the league minimum.

Caggiula, 26, scored 41 goals and 76 points through the first 222 games of his career, playing an energy role in the bottom-six for Edmonton and Chicago. Unfortunately, that production didn’t follow him to Arizona, where he had just one goal and seven points in 27 games this season.

Though he could never really find a fit in the desert, Caggiula comes to a Buffalo team that is desperate for some work ethic and fresh energy. Not only will he likely receive more responsibility and ice time, but this will be a great way for Caggiula to audition for his next contract. He settled for a one-year deal at the league minimum of $700K in late December and hasn’t had a great showing so far. A good few weeks with the struggling Sabres could change all that and send him to unrestricted free agency with something to build on.

There is also potentially a chance that Buffalo flips him by the deadline, especially if they know that another team was going to claim him. Being in last place, the Sabres would have had waiver priority over every other team in the league, meaning Caggiula never even had a chance to go anywhere else.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 04/09/21

April 9, 2021 at 10:00 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day:

West Division

  • The Los Angeles Kings have recalled Austin Strand and Christian Wolanin from the taxi squad, adding them to the active roster in time for tonight’s game against San Jose. Wolanin would be making his Kings debut if he gets into the lineup this evening.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have made their typical gameday recalls.  Per CapFriendly, David Backes, Chase De Leo, and Sam Carrick have all been recalled from the taxi squad.  Carrick has a point (one goal, one assist) in his two games since being promoted earlier this month.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have recalled Michael Bunting from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The 25-year-old had a hat trick on Monday and has four goals and an assist in five games this season.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have promoted Kyle Burroughs, Keaton Middleton, and Liam O’Brien from the taxi squad on an emergency basis, per CapFriendly.  Middleton is expected to make his NHL debut tonight.
  • The Minnesota Wild have recalled Luke Johnson and Kyle Rau from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The two have been shuffled back and forth routinely in recent days to save some cap room.
  • The San Jose Sharks have recalled Antti Suomela and Jeffrey Viel from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Viel has ten penalty minutes in five games this season while Suomela has suited up in four NHL contests thus far.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights have recalled Nicolas Hague from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The 22-year-old has picked up 14 points in 32 games this season while logging just over 16 minutes per contest.

North Division

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have added Joseph Duszak to the taxi squad, filling the sixth available spot with the young defenseman. Duszak, 23, was an undrafted free agent signing by the Maple Leafs in 2019 and split last season between the ECHL and AHL. This season he has eight points in 19 games for the Toronto Marlies.
  • The Ottawa Senators have re-assigned Alex Formenton to the taxi squad, a normal off-day move as they prepare for action tomorrow night. Formenton has two goals in seven games for the Senators this season.
  • The Montreal Canadiens have sent Cayden Primeau and Jake Evans back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Both were up on emergency recalls the last two days and will likely be promoted again tomorrow.
  • The Winnipeg Jets have sent Kristian Vesalainen back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The 2017 first-rounder has just an assist in eight games this season while averaging just 7:35 per outing.

Central Division

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have assigned Zac Dalpe to the taxi squad, moving Liam Foudy to the AHL in the process. Foudy, one of the team’s top prospects, has just three points in 18 games this season and is still looking for his first NHL goal. The 21-year-old still has a very high offensive ceiling but hasn’t been able to find much consistency at the highest level so far.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have brought Mathias Brome and Taro Hirose straight up from the AHL to the active roster, moving Evgeny Svechnikov to the taxi squad in the process. Gustav Lindstrom has also been re-assigned to the taxi squad from the AHL.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes are off today which means Jake Bean is once again back on the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Bean has 11 points in 29 games this season and will almost certainly be recalled for tomorrow’s game against Detroit.
  • The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled Brandon Pirri from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  It’s his fourth recall in just over three weeks although he only has played once in the NHL this season.  Alec Regula was also sent to AHL Rockford.
  • The Nashville Predators have sent David Farrance and Tyler Lewington to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Farrance logged nearly 14 minutes in his NHL debut yesterday while Lewington had an assist in his Nashville debut in that game as well.

East Division

  • The Buffalo Sabres have recalled Arttu Ruotsalainen from the taxi squad, moving Steven Fogarty back in his place. Ruotsalainen is expected to make his NHL debut tonight after playing 13 games for the Rochester Americans in his first year of North American pro hockey.
  • The Boston Bruins have sent Anton Blidh to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The winger has a goal in six games this season, four of which have come over the past two weeks.
  • The New Jersey Devils have promoted Ben Street from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The veteran has 14 points in as many games with AHL Binghamton but hasn’t suited up in the NHL this year.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers have sent Shayne Gostisbehere to the taxi squad while recalling Derrick Pouliot, per CapFriendly, a move that frees up a bit of extra cap space for the day.  Tanner Laczynski was also sent to AHL Lehigh Valley.

Trade Deadline Primer: Vancouver Canucks

April 8, 2021 at 9:27 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 3 Comments

We are now just a few days away from the NHL Trade Deadline and talks are heating up. Where does each team stand and what moves should they be looking to make?  We continue our look around the league with the Vancouver Canucks.

The Vancouver Canucks’ season was over well before this ongoing team-wide battle with the Coronavirus. Their current extended stoppage is just the final nail in the coffin of a disappointing campaign. At least the team can move some expiring contracts, add some futures, and get ready for next year, right? Well, there are a few different factors working against the Cancuks making much of an impact as a seller at the trade deadline.

The first is that they lack any of the top available rentals and the seconds is that their best trade assets are not really available. The Canucks opted to re-sign Tanner Pearson rather than trade him, removing arguably their top rental from the market. Additionally, veteran defensemen Alexander Edler and Travis Hamonic have No-Movement Clauses and have expressed no inclination to waive them. If Vancouver had any chance of landing a substantial return at the deadline, it would have been by dealing these three players.

Beyond that, the COVID status of nearly the entire roster also does not help. While there is no rule against trading a player on the NHL’s COVID Protocol list, it isn’t exactly an attractive attribute for buyers. While there has been recent progress in Vancouver that suggests the team could be healthy, perhaps even by the deadline, their current status is not encouraging.

So what is there to expect from the Canucks in the coming days? The team still has a few pieces that they may be able to move for moderate returns, but don’t be surprised if it is a relatively quiet deadline in Vancouver.

Trade Chips

With Pearson, Edler, and Hamonic off the table, veteran two-way center Brandon Sutter is the Canucks’ top trade chip. The impending UFA is a shadow of his former self, but is still a valuable depth piece due to his experience, versatility, and defensive ability. An ideal fit for a contender as a bottom-six forward, face-off asset, and penalty kill specialist, Sutter is the type of player who ends up being an invaluable acquisition to a team that makes a Cup run. His value isn’t what it used to be, but Sutter could still net a nice return, especially if he has a clean bill of health. The Canucks could boost his value by retaining part of his $4.375MM cap hit as well.

Another intriguing rental will be defensemen Jordie Benn. The veteran has plenty of experience, plays a sound defensive game, and is quietly enjoying the best per-game scoring season of his NHL career despite playing career-low minutes. Benn, who is also one of the few Canucks not currently sidelined by COVID, should be healthy and fresh and ready for a new challenge with a contender. An affordable addition at just $2MM, many buyers could do far worse than adding Benn as blue line depth.

While waiver claims are not usually considered trade assets, the Canucks were pretty high in the waiver order when they snagged forward Jimmy Vesey and Travis Boyd recently and they could shop their pair around to see if they can turn a claim into a draft pick. Could the buried Sven Baertschi also draw interest as a depth piece?

While there are not expected to be many term players dealt at the deadline, the Brett Connolly trade has already shattered the perception that they won’t happen at all. The Canucks stand out as a team that could trade away some players under contract next season and beyond. They have already been shopping forward Jake Virtanen for much of the season and there is no reason to believe that they will not still field offers, if any interest exists. A more interesting move would be if Vancouver decided to make underrated forward Tyler Motte available. Motte has been steadily improving over the past few years, but truly broke out in the playoffs last season and continued to perform at a high level this season, though he has missed time due to injury. At a minimal cap hit through next season, Motte is solid, two-way forward who could provide bottom-six value to a contender beyond just this year. Motte could be this season’s Barclay Goodrow if the Canucks make him available.

One major trade that wouldn’t be much of a surprise if it wasn’t for the fact that his name has not even been whispered on the rumor mill: the Canucks moving Braden Holtby. The veteran goaltender has one season remaining on his contract, but his future is not in Vancouver given the strong play and subsequent long-term extension of Thatcher Demko. Holtby has not performed this season, but was a top goalie in the NHL not long ago and could still draw interest, especially with numerous teams seeking help in net this season and beyond. Holtby might be an attractive pick for the Seattle Kraken in the Expansion Draft, but if Vancouver can instead get something in exchange for the capable keeper, they should do so. As long as they can figure out the expansion ramifications of the move, a Holtby trade would make sense for the Canucks if interest exists.

Others to watch for: D Jalen Chatfield ($700K, Group 6 UFA), D Ashton Sautner ($700K, UFA), D Brogan Rafferty ($700K, UFA), F Tyler Graovac ($700K, UFA), F Zack MacEwen ($825K, 2022 RFA)

Team Needs

1) Picks and Prospects – The Canucks are not your typical seller. The team made a playoff run just last year, have a number of talented young pieces, and are looking to reset for next year rather than rebuild for the future. With that said, Vancouver is not exactly boasting an elite pipeline either. They have some truly great young players on the NHL rosters and several players in the AHL and overseas who will be pushing for NHL roles as early as next year. However, their lack of first- and second-round picks last season and no mid- or late-round surprises in recent years have thinned the pipeline among younger prospects. Especially at center, the Canucks have a major need for some future talent. Adding picks or targeting young prospects is the best way for Vancouver to maximize their rentals.

2) Term Defenseman – The Canucks are looking to reload for next year though and with a whopping seven defensemen in the organization headed for unrestricted free agency this summer, it wouldn’t hurt to look for a blue liner with term on his contract. The addition would also solve an Expansion Draft exposure issue that the team currently has no obvious solution for.
