Daniel Brickley, Mikey Eyssimont Sign With Los Angeles Kings

March 30, 2018 at 1:35 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

Friday: The Kings have officially announced the Brickley contract. The two-year entry-level contract will start this season.

Thursday: Daniel Brickley might be the most sought after college free agent on the market this year, and we’d recently heard he had visited the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks in an attempt to make a decision. That decision didn’t take long, as the defenseman has agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Kings. The deal will be a two-year entry-level contract when it is finally signed, and Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that it will start in 2017-18.

Brickley, 22, just finished his junior season with Minnesota State-Mankato, where he recorded 35 points in 40 games and was a considerable two-way force. After playing in the World Championships for Team USA last spring, it is expected that Brickley will be able to step right into the NHL and play a role on any defense corps, making him a desirable asset for nearly every club.

The left-handed shot defenseman stands 6’3″ 205-lbs and has quick feet to skate himself out of trouble in his own end. Though there are sometimes lapses in his own end like many young defenders, his ability to push the play through a solid first pass and ability to carry the puck is perfectly suited to the new NHL.

It is important to note though that Brickley will not be eligible to play in the playoffs this season, since he was not on any team’s reserve list at the trade deadline. The free agent will have to wait until 2018-19 to really make an impact, though the actual contract will still come into effect right away and make him eligible to play in the last few regular season games.

The team has also signed Mikey Eyssimont out of St. Cloud State, their fifth-round pick form 2016. Eyssimont was a point-per-game player this season, recording 39 on the year and leading the club in goals with 17. The 21-year old was also entitled to a two-year deal, but actually would be eligible for the playoffs if it takes effect in 2017-18.

Jordan Szwarz Signs One-Year Extension With Boston Bruins

March 30, 2018 at 1:29 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Though the team sent him down to the minor leagues earlier today, it’s not all bad news for Jordan Szwarz. The Boston Bruins forward has signed a one-year two-way contract extension which will keep him in the organization through 2018-19. Szwarz will earn $650K at the NHL level, while securing $350K while in the AHL. Szwarz was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Now 26, Szwarz has really flourished as an offensive player since joining the Providence Bruins in 2016. Last season, he led the club in scoring with 54 points before being a key part of a deep playoff run. This season has been much of the same, with 44 points in 46 games for the AHL club. Though he won’t lead the team this year—that honor is held by Austin Czarnik and his 61 points in 56 games—he is still one of the leaders for the minor league squad and a useful player to keep around for Boston.

In 12 NHL games this season, Szwarz has just three points and is still looking for his first goal, but has been used in various roles including some time (albeit limited) on the powerplay. Useful depth pieces are important for every organization, and especially one that is expecting to challenge for the Stanley Cup this year and in the immediate future. Long playoff runs almost always result in several injuries, and with the Bruins already dealing with various ailments throughout the lineup Szwarz could be just a shift or two away from being needed in the postseason.

Poll: Who Is The More Valuable Vegas Free Agent Forward?

March 30, 2018 at 11:42 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Vegas Golden Knights had a clear mantra in the expansion draft. They would select players that didn’t have much term left on their contracts, and use cap space and flexibility to build a strong organization over the next few years. Then the season began, and they suddenly went from an fun expansion team to an NHL powerhouse.

Among those that they selected, were a pair of free agent forwards that had bounced around the league but found success nearly everywhere they’d been. David Perron and James Neal both had six seasons with 40+ points heading into 2017-18, and were accepted as good (but not great) NHL scoring threats. Neal came with a bit more shine on him after his long playoff run with the Nashville Predators, but perhaps Perron should’ve been the top name all along.

This season, despite Neal being the team’s lone All-Star representative up front, Perron hasn’t stopped scoring. The 29-year old winger has 66 points in 70 games, including a team-leading 50 assists. An underrated player establishing a career high in points isn’t a rare occurrence for the Golden Knights, but NHL teams around the league are sure to be watching closely to Perron’s season.

As unrestricted free agents this summer, Neal and Perron both could fetch big money contracts from a team looking for an offensive upgrade. Both have playoff experience, and are about to get even more with Vegas in the coming weeks. We at PHR may have underestimated Perron, ranking him #11 in our Midseason UFA Power Rankings. Neal came in at #5, but it’s not as clear now who will be the better option on the open market.

So what do you think? Which Golden Knights forward will garner more interest in free agency? Will they both secure long-term deals? Will they even get there? Make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Minor Transactions: 03/30/18

March 30, 2018 at 10:27 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

A busy night in the NHL brought several exciting finishes, but nothing quite like the drama that occurred in Chicago. Scott Foster, a 36-year old recreational goalie entered the game when Collin Delia was injured, and stopped all seven shots he faced en route to a first star selection and perfect NHL debut.

Because of the injuries to Anton Forsberg and Delia—who was also making his NHL debut—the Blackhawks made Jean-Francois Berube an emergency call-up, recalling the goaltender after just seeing him clear waivers this week.

Like always, we’ll keep track of all the other moves around the league:

  • Also facing goaltending problems, the Buffalo Sabres have recalled Adam Wilcox from the minor leagues. Wilcox has bounced around the minor leagues for the last few seasons, but is still waiting for his NHL debut. The 25-year old has a .903 save percentage in 28 games with the Rochester Americans this season.
  • The Dallas Stars have sent Curtis McKenzie back to the minor leagues, according to Mark Stepneski of NHL.com. McKenzie has played in just seven games for the Stars this year, and is still looking for his first goal of the season.
  • The Boston Bruins have returned Jordan Szwarz to the minor leagues, according to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal. Szwarz is having another excellent season in the AHL, recording 44 points in 46 games. His time in the NHL hasn’t been as fruitful, with just three points in 12 contests.
  • Kerby Rychel has been recalled by the Montreal Canadiens, after playing some of the best hockey of his career for the Laval Rocket of late. Rychel has registered 12 points in the 14 games since being traded from the Toronto Marlies, and could get his first taste of NHL action in more than two years. The 23-year old was a first-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets and debuted at age 20 to high expectations, but couldn’t find his footing in the NHL and was passed over by other prospects. He’ll try for a fresh start in Montreal, where they are dying for an offensive spark of any kind.

Snapshots: Sedins, Jets, Rempal, Pinho

March 29, 2018 at 7:48 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Canucks GM Jim Benning plans to meet with pending unrestricted free agents Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin in the coming days to gauge their interest in returning for their 18th season with Vancouver, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports on TSN’s Insider Trading (video link).  The twins have had good seasons, ranking second and third in team scoring despite seeing their ice time drop by more than three minutes per game.

While Benning may be hoping for a quick decision, that may not actually happen.  Speaking with Postmedia’s Ben Kuzma Daniel noted that they plan to take their time with the decision and, perhaps most notably, see where the team is at and how it shapes up over the offseason.  Even if they take a pay cut from their current $7MM contracts, it will still likely cost a considerable amount to keep both around and the Canucks will certainly want to know heading into free agency if they will have to allocate that money elsewhere.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • The Jets appear to be closer to getting some good news on the injury front, something they haven’t had a lot of this year. Postmedia’s Ken Wiebe notes that defenseman Jacob Trouba (concussion) could be back this weekend while goaltender Steve Mason is expected to get into at least one game next week which should have him ready to go for the postseason as well.
  • The Kings may not be done signing college players just yet. After they signed defenseman Daniel Brickley and forward Mikey Eyssimont earlier today, Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider reports that free agent winger Sheldon Rempal also visited with the team.  The 21-year-old sophomore posted 23 goals and 23 assists in just 39 games with Clarkson and is garnering considerable interest around the league although he could return for another season at the NCAA level as well.
  • The Capitals are in contract negotiations with the agent for college center Brian Pinho, reports Mark Divver of the Providence Journal (Twitter link). The 22-year-old recently wrapped up his college career with the Friars, posting 12 goals and 20 assists in his senior year.  Pinho was Washington’s sixth-round pick (174th overall) back in 2013 and could test the free agent waters if he doesn’t sign a contract by mid-August.

Capitals Notes: Carlson, Trotz, Gersich

March 29, 2018 at 6:23 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

If the Capitals intend to re-sign defenseman John Carlson, they are going to be hard-pressed to do so while staying under the salary cap.  In an appearance on NBCSN (transcribed by FanRag’s Chris Nichols), TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that the expectation around the league is that the 28-year-old will land a contract between $7MM and $8MM per year and a term between six and eight years.  (Only Washington can sign him for the maximum term of eight seasons.)

The Capitals have more than $63MM tied up in contracts to 15 players for 2018-19 which doesn’t leave them a lot of wiggle room to fit a contract like that for Carlson, even with the Upper Limit increasing a little bit as it is expected to do.  Accordingly, Washington is going to be a team to watch for this summer to see if they make a move to create room (similar to what they did with Marcus Johansson back in July) or whether the leading point getter among NHL blueliners goes elsewhere in the coming months.

More from Washington:

  • Although the Caps are getting closer to locking down another division title, owner Ted Leonsis told reporters, including Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post, that there is still no decision on the future of head coach Barry Trotz. Trotz is in the final year of his contract and while GM Brian MacLellan inked a new deal earlier this season, it doesn’t appear as if any extension has been offered to the bench boss.  It has been speculated previously that Washington’s postseason performance might dictate his future and Leonsis didn’t exactly quash that as he declined to comment on that suggestion, merely saying that it’s “inappropriate” to comment on contracts right now.
  • Rookie winger Shane Gersich made his NHL debut on Wednesday night and Trotz acknowledged to Khurshudyan that he is still undecided on his bottom six group of forwards for the playoffs and that the 21-year-old could work his way into the mix. Unlike a lot of the NCAA signings we’ve seen in recent days, Gersich would be postseason-eligible as he has been on Washington’s reserve list all season long, something that isn’t the case with the undrafted free agents that are signing contracts.

Snapshots: Ho-Sang, Price, Mitchell

March 29, 2018 at 4:45 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 18 Comments

Joshua Ho-Sang hasn’t had the season many were hoping for this year, and he doesn’t really think it’s all his fault. Ho-Sang has played in just 22 games at the NHL level, scoring 12 points but spending most of the season in the AHL once again. He spoke to Arthur Staple of The Athletic (subscription required) about it, and was quite candid in his approach.

I love those guys, I want to make that clear,” Ho-Sang said of his former Islanders teammates. “I know they’re working hard. But I got sent down for defense and what are they in goals against in the NHL? I only played (22) games up there this year. I don’t think it’s my fault. They really painted it like it was my fault at the beginning of the year and I didn’t like that.

Obviously there is more than just defense in the critique of Ho-Sang’s game, and Staple does a wonderful job breaking down what has happened between the two sides, including quotes from GM Garth Snow. It’s a very interesting situation to keep an eye on, as Ho-Sang has all the offensive talent in the world and is still an important part of the Islanders’ future.

  • Carey Price won’t play in the upcoming World Championships, instead focusing on his health and being ready for the 2018-19 season with the Montreal Canadiens. Price has had a tough season battling through injuries, and putting up the lowest save percentage of his career at just .902. About to start an eight-year, $84MM contract, he’s the key to any potential Canadiens bounce back next season and down the road. Brendan Gallagher also won’t suit up at the Worlds, while Alex Galchenyuk is still weighing a decision.
  • Also from the staff at The Athletic, Scott Powers reports (subscription required) that Ian Mitchell will not turn pro this summer and instead is expected to return to the University of Denver for his sophomore year. Mitchell, 19, was selected in the second round by the Chicago Blackhawks last June and excelled in his first year for DU. 30 points in 41 games easily led the club’s defensemen in scoring, and he should take another step forward next year to be one of the nation’s most dangerous offensive blueliners.

Colorado Avalanche Sign Josh Anderson, Travis Barron

March 29, 2018 at 3:53 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

If you thought having two Sebastian Aho’s was confusing, get ready for Josh Anderson. That’s one of the newest members of the Colorado Avalanche organization, as the defenseman signed his entry-level contract today, along with Travis Barron. Both players inked three-year entry-level deals, signing before the deadline of June 1st.

Anderson, 19, is finishing up his fourth full season in the WHL, playing for the Swift Current Broncos in the playoffs. He was traded during the year, and ended up with just 14 points on the year. That doesn’t inspire much confidence in his offensive abilities, but that’s not what the Avalanche are hoping to get.

Selected in the third round of the 2016 draft, he has been used as a reliable shutdown defender for his entire junior career, and looks like he’ll have a chance to continue that in professional hockey. That means there isn’t a lot of top-4 upside to his game, but could be a useful penalty killer and third-pairing option down the road.

Barron on the other hand, put together the best season of his junior career this year with 57 points in 67 games and has started to unlock the potential that made him the third-overall pick in the OHL midget draft. He’s always been noted as a two-way player that can do everything for your club, but hasn’t shown much that made him stand out offensively. Only 19-years old still, there is still a lot of time for him to round out his game as a professional and make an impact for the Avalanche down the road.

Erik Foley Signs Three-Year Entry-Level Contract With St. Louis Blues

March 29, 2018 at 1:55 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

As expected, the St. Louis Blues have signed Erik Foley to a three-year entry-level contract that will begin in the 2018-19 season. Foley will sign an amateur tryout with the San Antonio Rampage to get into some minor league action before the end of the season. The Providence College standout was acquired earlier this year as part of the package for Paul Stastny.

Getting Foley under contract means that the Jets will not have to give the Blues a 2020 fourth-round pick, which was one of the conditions of the trade. Instead, the talented winger will jump right into the Blues system and give them another interesting forward prospect.

With players like Tage Thompson, Klim Kostin, Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas already in the system, the Blues are stocked with forward talent even before bringing Foley in, meaning he will have to fight for his opportunities in the organization. With 35 points in 38 games for Providence this season, he certainly looks ready to do just that.

Selected in the third round in 2015, Foley is an interesting blend of skill and physicality. Though he isn’t very big, he plays a power game and loves to get in on the forecheck and punish defenders who underestimate him. That bang-and-crash game is supported by some nice hands around the net and an ability to score in different ways, though his projection at the NHL level is not as a top-line player.

St. Louis Blues Erik Foley| Paul Stastny
