Injury Updates: Canucks, Zibanejad, Capitals

December 15, 2017 at 5:21 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Vancouver hasn’t had much luck with the injury bug as of late with Bo Horvat and Sven Baertschi, two-thirds of their top line, going down recently.  The bad news continued Friday as the Canucks announced (Twitter link) that defenseman Chris Tanev will be out two-to-three weeks as a result of a groin strain.  That is undoubtedly a big blow to their back end as he logs nearly 21 minutes per game of ice time while playing a shutdown role.  Alex Biega will likely draw into the lineup as his replacement but he hasn’t seen any action in more than three weeks.

Canucks head coach Travis Green also provided further updates on a couple of players.  Center Brandon Sutter is still seven-to-ten days away from returning from his upper-body injury while blueliner Erik Gudbranson is the closest to returning; he has been out with an upper-body issue of his own since November 22nd.

Other injury notes from around the NHL:

  • Mika Zibanejad’s return to the lineup will have to wait a little while longer. The Rangers have ruled him out of their next two games, reports NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman via Twitter.  The plan is for the center to practice on Monday and then the team will re-evaluate his status from there.  Zibanejad last played on November 26th and has been dealing with concussion-like symptoms since then but he still sits third in team scoring with 22 points in 24 games.
  • Capitals winger T.J. Oshie took part in a partial practice today but will not suit up tomorrow night against Anaheim, reports Callie Caplan of the Washington Post. As a result, he’ll miss his sixth straight game.  From the same report, defenseman Brooks Orpik is dealing with an upper-body issue.  He’s set to be re-evaluated tomorrow but it seems likely that he will also miss Saturday’s contest.  Washington doesn’t have enough salary cap space to call anyone up but they have one extra defender on their roster so they still should be able to ice a full lineup.

New York Islanders Loan Josh Ho-Sang To AHL

December 15, 2017 at 4:15 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

4:15pm: Steve Bernier is the call-up for the Islanders, giving the journeyman forward another crack at the NHL. Bernier has played for six different NHL teams since being drafted 16th-overall by San Jose in 2003. Once a promising young power forward with goal scoring upside, Bernier hasn’t made an NHL appearance since the 2015-16 season.

10:38am: After another loss at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets last night, the New York Islanders have sent Josh Ho-Sang back to the minor leagues. While there is no guarantee this is for more than just the day, Ho-Sang is mired in a five-game pointless streak and the team doesn’t necessarily need the cap space. More likely it is an attempt to shake up the team after going 4-5-1 in their last ten and allowing 11 goals over the last two.

Ho-Sang has been the focus of displeasure from Islanders’ fans recently, as his high-risk style has resulted in more chances against than for of late. Still, he has 12 points in 21 games this season and is a dynamic offensive player. The Islanders—filled with offense suddenly, and trailing only Tampa Bay in goals for—need to find a way to keep the puck out of their own net with more regularity. Shane Prince, who is on a conditioning loan with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers could potentially be recalled in Ho-Sang’s place.

The Islanders currently sit in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but can’t afford to keep losing. In a season that must impress their star player John Tavares enough to warrant a long-term extension, missing the playoffs would be a huge problem. After acquiring Jordan Eberle and Andrew Ladd the last two offseasons to help their offense, the loss of Travis Hamonic seems to have really weakened them defensively. When combined with a terrible penalty kill and poor performances from both Thomas Greiss and Jaroslav Halak in net, the team has allowed 111 goals against this season—the most in the East and only trailing Arizona league-wide.

Ryan Callahan Out Indefinitely With Upper-Body Injury

December 15, 2017 at 4:11 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Ryan Callahan played just 8:37 in last night’s game for the Tampa Bay Lightning after crashing into the boards hard, and today has been given a disappointing diagnosis. Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Callahan is out indefinitely with an upper-body injury, and won’t even be evaluated again for at least three weeks.

Callahan was caught up with Coyotes’ defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson in the third period, and suffered an apparent shoulder or arm injury on the play. It’s a tough break for Callahan, who has seen his career derailed by injuries the past few seasons. Once the captain of the New York Rangers, Callahan was a perennial 20-goal scorer who reached a (since matched) career-high of 54 points in 2011-12.

Traded for Martin St. Louis, Callahan had a solid start with the Lightning but played just 18 games last year due to chronic hip issues. He’d worked hard to get back on the ice this year, but had just six points in 29 games playing fewer than 13 minutes a night. At $5.8MM, his cap hit is one of the worst in the league for a player of his production, and after this latest injury you have to start wondering about a potential long-term injury stint once again.

Poll: Which Team Will Be First To Sell?

December 15, 2017 at 3:13 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

On Tuesday, the NHL will enter its holiday roster freeze. For all players on the active roster, they’ll be given a week’s reprieve from trade speculation, or reassignment anxiety. No one will be traded, waived or loaned between the 19th and 27th of December.

But after the rosters thaw and the holiday season starts to drift into the past, which NHL team will be first to pick up the phone and decide enough is enough? Which general manager will send out messages explaining he’s open for business and start selling off assets to the highest bidder?

The Arizona Coyotes are currently in last place, even after several offseason moves designed to make them more competitive this year. Will they decide that the Derek Stepan experiment was a mistake, or even take a shot at a big return by moving Oliver Ekman-Larsson?

What about the Buffalo Sabres, currently in 30th and with a league-low 68 goals for? Will Evander Kane be celebrating New Year’s Eve in another district? Jack Eichel is surely safe, but the rest of the roster should be looking over their shoulders come 2018.

The Oilers and Senators both believed they could compete for the Stanley Cup this season, but nothing has seemed to go right. With high-end players still on the roster, do they decide to sell off for a season and try to bounce-back next October?

Who will be the first to start selling this season? Cast your vote below, and make sure to explain who you think will move first. We’ve included the bottom 10 teams in the standings, but make sure to comment with whoever you think should have been included.

Snapshots: Mrazek, Mete, Nylander

December 15, 2017 at 1:32 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Petr Mrazek has been in the news recently since we found out that the Edmonton Oilers had a passing interest in the Detroit Red Wings goaltender, but Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet now says it may have been more than just that. Friedman joined Sportsnet 960 radio out of Calgary this morning, and explained that one source told him it was even closer than he had originally thought.

I heard they were looking at Mrazek last week, and somebody told me after we mentioned it that it was a lot closer than I had kinda thought. I think they’d worked out that Detroit was going to keep about half the money, and they were trying to figure out the draft pick.

That would mesh with what we learned from Craig Custance of The Athletic recently, that a proposed asking price for Mrazek would be a second or third-round pick depending on whether Detroit was retaining salary. It might not matter anymore, as Edmonton seems to have cooled on Mrazek after watching him more closely and the team has just welcomed Cam Talbot back off injured reserve.

  • Victor Mete is busy trying to make the Canadian World Junior team after spending the early portion of the season with the Montreal Canadiens, but may have an even bigger international tournament in his future. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports that Mete is very much on the radar of the Canadian Olympic team, but still has some hurdles if he ever were to be invited. The Canadiens could bring Mete back to the NHL squad after the World Junior tournament, and the CHL still doesn’t have an agreement with Hockey Canada on if it will lend players to the Olympic squad. Those decisions won’t be made until after the World Juniors are over, which end on January 5th.
  • Speaking of World Junior decisions, the Buffalo Sabres still haven’t made a choice on Alexander Nylander according to Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News. Sabres GM Jason Botterill wants to see Nylander play more at the AHL level before making that decision, after an injury has taken away much of the young forward’s season so far. Nylander has been disappointing so far in his professional career, scoring just 32 points in 77 AHL games. The eighth-overall pick in 2016 has huge upside, but needs to get back on track this season.

Edmonton Oilers Activate Cam Talbot

December 15, 2017 at 11:20 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The Edmonton Oilers are in danger of dropping out of the playoff race completely, but they’ll get some help a little sooner than expected. Goaltender Cam Talbot has been activated from injured reserve, and could be back in the lineup tomorrow afternoon. Nick Ellis, who’d been backing up Laurent Brossoit in Talbot’s absence, was sent back to the minor leagues.

The Oilers are a frustrating team to watch at the moment, dominating possession but still unable to string many wins together. The team sits second-last in the Western Conference, and nine points out of a playoff spot after 32 games.

Unfortunately, even before his injury Talbot hadn’t been playing quite up to his standards. The Oilers need him to get back to his career .920 save percentage if they’re to get on any kind of a roll, not the .903 mark he posted through 22 games this season. With Connor McDavid back to dominating the league after dealing with flu-like symptoms earlier in the year, the team is at a crossroads. Get back to the Stanley Cup contender many believed you to be, or fall into the pit of mediocrity once again.

Boston Bruins Place Matt Beleskey On Waivers

December 15, 2017 at 11:02 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 9 Comments

Friday: Beleskey has cleared waivers and can now be assigned to the AHL. As CapFriendly points out, since the team activated Ryan Spooner yesterday in Beleskey’s roster spot, and moved the waived forward to “Waiver Non-Roster” to clear space, he must immediately report to the Providence Bruins. That doesn’t mean he can’t be traded, much the opposite. Any acquiring team could put Beleskey in the minor leagues right away, without him having to clear again.

Thursday: The Boston Bruins have decided that they’ve waited long enough for Matt Beleskey to make an impact, and have placed the forward on waivers today according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Beleskey has played just 14 games for the Bruins this season, but has been held without a single point.

"<strongBeleskey was signed to a five-year, $19MM contract in the summer of 2015 and has two more seasons after this one at a $3.8MM cap hit. His deal has become one of the very worst contracts in the entire league, as even last season saw him register just eight points in 49 games. Friedman reports that he’ll be heading to Providence to play in the AHL if he goes unclaimed.

By burying Beleskey in the minors, the Bruins would save a prorated $1.025MM in cap space. It seems very unlikely that he would be claimed by a team, meaning if the Bruins want to get rid of his contract they’ll have to find a trade partner or buy him out this summer. Beleskey does have a partial no-trade clause, but can be traded to 23 teams around the league. If the Bruins retained salary, perhaps there is someone who believes the 29-year old can still provide some value.

By winning again last night, the Bruins now hold a healthy four point lead over the Montreal Canadiens for third place in the Atlantic Division, with three additional games in hand. It’s clear the team believes they are a playoff contender this season, and is making sure they can put the best team forward every night. By burying Beleskey, the team opens up some more cap flexibility and the ability to make an addition at some point.

Aaron Dell: “The Next Scott Darling”

December 15, 2017 at 10:25 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Much was said yesterday about San Jose Sharks goaltender Aaron Dell, after Pierre LeBrun profiled him on the latest edition of Insider Trading on TSN. LeBrun compared him to a certain former Chicago Blackhawks netminder:

Aaron DellGenerating some interest I think, or at least people are taking notice. Could he be this year’s Scott Darling? The guy that goes from backup to number one. A year ago Darling was entering his UFA year getting a lot of interest. Aaron Dell, also, UFA on July 1st. Now, do the Sharks use him as trade bait closer to the February 26th trade deadline, or do they think about re-signing him as insurance to Martin Jones. We don’t know that yet.

At one point in the offseason, being labeled as this year’s Darling would have been a compliment. After all, Darling hit a big payday in Carolina when he signed a four-year, $16.6MM contract to become their new starter. It was a huge raise for a player who’d only been on a one-way contract for a single season, and had never made more than $600K in a year.

The comparison isn’t even fair on its face. Darling had been the backup in Chicago for three seasons, playing in 75 regular season games with the Blackhawks and posting a superb .923 save percentage. That also came with a five-game stint in the playoffs during Chicago’s 2015 Stanley Cup run where he admirably held the fort and went 4-1 with a .936. Darling had basically never shown anything but an exceptional ability at the NHL level, even if he did come by it later in his professional career.

Dell on the other hand has just 31 appearances under his belt in San Jose, and though so far they’ve been incredible—including a league-leading .939 save percentage this season—it’s hard to crown him a starting goaltender with such little experience.

Scott DarlingAnyone looking to place the mantle of “starter” on him should do so with caution, and you don’t have to look much further than the comparison LeBrun makes. Darling has been one of the biggest disappointments in Carolina this season, posting an .899 save percentage and allowing some unfortunate goals in the process. If he can’t get his game back together, that contract could look awfully bad.

The thing is, these aren’t improving goaltenders. Darling will turn 29 in a week’s time, and Dell isn’t far behind with a birthday in March. They’ve put on solid work as backup goaltenders, but starting in the NHL on a nightly basis is a different game entirely.

It’s true, that San Jose could use Dell as solid trade bait as the season progresses. We’ve examined recently how bad the goaltending market is right now, and that shiny save percentage should entice just about anyone looking for depth at the position. But come July 1st, signing him to a starter-type contract will be a risk. It’s not clear anyone will be willing to take it.

Prospect Updates: Kyrou, Cholowski

December 14, 2017 at 8:55 pm CDT | by natebrown Leave a Comment

The St. Louis Blues are already having a great year. Adding to those good feelings is the performance of 2016 second round pick Jordan Kyrou, who is already approaching his goal totals from last year in nearly half the games. Kyrou notched 94 points last season (30-64) and already has 58 (19-41) this season in just 30 games. Should he play a full slate of 66 games, he’s on pace for 112 points and looks to be trekking in a similar trajectory of Chicago Blackhawks’ winger Alex DeBrincat, who has been scoring as the Hawks had hoped at the NHL level. Kyrou has a slightly bigger frame, the 19-year-0ld has hardly been a secret to the Blues. The St. Louis Dispatch’s Jim Thomas wrote back in November that both Kyrou and fellow Blues prospect and current London Knights center Robert Thomas are “tearing up” the OHL. Kyrou is also one cut away from making the Team Canada roster, where it’s expected he’ll showcase his scoring flair on the world stage in a few weeks.

  • The Detroit Red Wings, on the other hand, need all the help they can get and defenseman Dennis Cholowski, a controversial pick after Detroit passed on grabbing Jakob Chychrun, has seen his stock rise quite a bit since going to the Prince George Cougars of the WHL from St. Cloud State last season. Through 28 games, the speedy d-man has been nearly a point-per-game player with 25 points (8-17). The Red Wings are desperate for a speedy, puck moving defenseman who can contribute at both ends of the ice and anchor the blue line. It was the intent for Cholowski, who certainly had an upside but was viewed as a project. The Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James believes that Cholowski could be traded to a playoff bound WHL team, which would give him a better competitive opportunity before heading to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins by the end of their season. Though he was just cut by Team Canada (an expected move), the Red Wings brass are certainly crossing their fingers that their gamble to bet on a project instead of a sure-thing in Chychrun will pay off.

Team Canada’s First Cuts Include Cody Glass

December 14, 2017 at 8:07 pm CDT | by natebrown 1 Comment

TSN’s Bob McKenzie tweets that Vegas Golden Knights center Cody Glass has been cut from Canada’s World Junior team, along with Detroit Red Wings prospect Dennis Cholowski and Vancouver’s Kole Lind. Glass’ departure is somewhat of a surprise, if social media reactions are any indication. While they weren’t the only cuts today, they were two that certainly caught a lot of analysts off guard.

TSN projected Glass to be on the final roster back in August so the move is worthy of a double take. The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler tweets that Glass and Lind are second and third respectively in scoring for the WHL. Though the talent is hardly lacking for Canada, cutting two prominent scorers will get some attention. In addition to the aforementioned players, forward Jonathan Ang, and defenseman Logan Stanley were both cut loose.

To recap:

Canada Cuts:

F Cody Glass (Vegas Golden Knights)
F Kole Lind (Vancouver Canucks)
F Jonathan Ang (Florida Panthers)
D Dennis Cholowski (Detroit Red Wings)
D Logan Stanley (Winnipeg Jets)
G Samuel Harvey (2018 Draft Eligible)
