The Richest Contracts In NHL History

July 16, 2016 at 9:55 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

Friday was a very busy day for Jamie Benn.  First, he underwent surgery to repair an injured core muscle that leaves his availability for Team Canada at the World Cup in question.  Then the good news for him came in the form of an eight year, $76MM extension that makes him the highest paid player in team history.  It’s one of the richest deals in league history but falls just short of the top-10 of all time, at least in part.  Here’s a closer look at the priciest NHL deals ever.

1) Alex Ovechkin (13 years, $124MM) – Following his entry-level deal, Ovechkin essentially signed a two-pronged extension, one for six years at $9MM per season and then another at seven years and $10MM per year.  While you can’t call his contract a bargain, he has been one of the NHL’s top players for many years and is expected to continue to do so for a long time to come.

2) Shea Weber (14 years, $110MM) – Offer sheets have been few and far between in recent years but Weber was the most prominent to receive one as the Flyers inked him to a heavily frontloaded one in the summer of 2012.  Interestingly enough, offer sheets cannot contain any trade restrictions which likely played a role in Weber’s trade to the Canadiens last month.

3) Sidney Crosby (12 years, $104.4MM) – Prior to the current CBA which set a term limit of eight years on any contract, Crosby inked a highly frontloaded deal to stay with the Penguins until he’s 38.  The extra money up front was enough to keep Crosby at an $8.7MM cap hit, matching his sweater number.

4) Ilya Kovalchuk (15 years, $100MM) – New Jersey’s second attempt at a Kovalchuk deal in the summer in 2010 was enough to avoid another cap circumvention penalty.  That’s really the only good news that came from it as just three years later, Kovalchuk ‘retired’ to return to play in the KHL.  The Devils are dealing with a salary cap recapture penalty of $250K until 2024-25.

5) Alexei Yashin (10 years, $87.5MM) – This was an outright disaster for the Islanders, who inked Yashin to this deal back in 2001. He failed to come close to expectations and wound up being bought out with four years left on the deal at a cost of over $17.6MM.  On top of that, the Isles traded Zdeno Chara and the draft pick that yielded Jason Spezza as part of the package to land Yashin.

6) Vincent Lecavalier (11 years, $85MM) – Tampa Bay was hoping they had a fair deal with their franchise player at the time when they signed him to this deal back in 2009.  However, like Yashin, he struggled under the weight of the new deal while injuries took a toll as well.  The Lightning bought him out in 2013 and are in the midst of paying him over $32.6MM not to play for them through 2026-27.  Lecavalier retired earlier this offseason.

7/8) Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews (8 years, $84MM) – Chicago inked their two superstars to identical contracts two years ago, a year before each were eligible for unrestricted free agency.  The Blackhawks continue to find ways to stay under the cap for now but that could become more of a challenge if the salary cap continues to stay close to where it is now as the years progress.

9) Anze Kopitar (8 years, $80MM) – Back in January, the Kings reached this deal with their new captain to avoid the risk of losing him to free agency this summer.  Kopitar has been Los Angeles’ most consistent forward for many years now and should remain their franchise forward for many years to come.

10) Jaromir Jagr (7 years, $77MM) – Washington signed Jagr back in 2001 to what was the richest deal in league history at that time.  However, the lockout in 2004-05 introduced a 24% rollback just two years into the contract which cost Jagr over $21.5MM in salary.  Jagr, now 44, is still going strong in the NHL and signed a one year, $4MM guaranteed deal with Florida in May.  He could also earn another $1.515M in games played and award bonuses.

If you take Jagr’s deal off because of the subsequent rollback, Benn’s new $76MM contract as well as Evgeni Malkin’s current identical pact with the Penguins become tenth on the all-time list.

Stars Re-Sign Jamie Benn To Eight-Year Deal

July 15, 2016 at 7:45 pm CDT | by natebrown Leave a Comment

As reported by the team, the Dallas Stars have re-signed Jamie Benn to an eight-year deal worth approximately $9.5MM AAV. Mark Stepneski confirmed the dollar amount via Twitter. Stephen Whyno tweets that the total amount of the deal is $76MM. This was confirmed in the Stars’ press release.

The Stars captain will be paid handsomely after posting back to back 30+goal seasons. In 2014-15, Benn registered 87 points (35-52) and then followed it up in 2015-16 with an 89 point season (41-48). In 13 playoff games, Benn had 15 points (5-10).

The 26-year-old winger will get a $4.25MM raise from the $5.25MM he was making per season through 2015-16. This also makes him the highest paid player on the team, and one of the highest in the league. Only four other players make more per season–Patrick Kane ($10.4MM), Jonathan Toews ($10.4MM) Anze Kopitar ($10MM) and Alex Ovechkin ($9.54MM). Evgeni Malkin also makes $9.5MM AAV.

Earlier today, it was reported that Benn would miss six weeks to repair an injured core muscle.

Sabres Sign Alexander Nylander To Entry-Level Deal

July 15, 2016 at 6:10 pm CDT | by natebrown Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Sabres have signed their 2016 first round pick (eighth overall) Alexander Nylander to a three-year, entry-level deal. Cap Friendly has the deal at $925K AAV.

Nylander spent last season with the Mississauga Steelheads and led the team in goals, assists, and points (28-47-75). He notched 12 points (6-6) in the six playoff games.

General manager Tim Murray said in the team release that he expects Nylander to compete for a job in training camp. Nylander, who had a strong showing in the World Junior Championships, and IIHF Under 18 World Championship, joins a Buffalo organization oozing with young talent.

Should he break camp as a member of the Sabres, he would join the likes of Sam Reinhart, and Jack Eichel, both rising stars under 21. The Sabres also added Kyle Okposo through free agency.

Canucks Sign Michael Carcone To Entry-Level Deal

July 15, 2016 at 5:40 pm CDT | by natebrown Leave a Comment

The Vancouver Canucks announced the signing of forward Michael Carcone to a three-year, entry-level deal. Carcone spent last season with the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the QMJHL where his scoring prowess was on full display.

Carcone was tied for the team leader in points with 89 (47-42), and led the team in goals. He also spent the 2014-15 season with Drummondville.

In a recent article from the Vancouver Courier, Daniel Wagner wrote about how the 2o-year-old forward’s skillset has made him a Youtube darling. The Canucks even included a clip via Twitter of Carcone’s skills in camp.

Though his goals come pretty and in large quantities, Wagner reports that Carcone’s undrafted status was affected by a couple of things. First, his size (5-10) scared some teams off. Second, playing in Junior A during a draft eligible year hurt him as he only produced 37 points in 49 games.

However, his ability to score goals makes him a desired quantity for the Canucks–who ranked 29th in goals for–only ahead of New Jersey.

Nolan Pratt Hired By Colorado Avalanche

July 15, 2016 at 4:13 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Colorado Avalanche have added to their coaching staff today, hiring former Av Nolan Pratt as an assistant coach. Pratt had been coaching as an assistant with the Blue Jackets’ affiliate, and was part of the Calder Cup winning staff last season.

A former NHL defenseman, Pratt was part of the 2000-01 Stanley Cup Champion Avalanche, though he didn’t suit up in the playoffs. He also won a Cup in 2003-04 as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning.  Pratt played in 592 games in the NHL, logging just 65 points but spending 537 minutes in the penalty box. A hard-nosed player, he’ll return to the Avalanche organization looking to instill some toughness in their defense corps.

He’ll join a staff that includes former teammate Patrick Roy, along with fellow assistants Tim Army and Dave Farrish.  Colorado had a disappointing year in 2015-16, finishing an even 39-39-4, five points out of a playoff spot.

Senators Sign Matt Puempel To Two-Way Deal

July 15, 2016 at 3:07 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After splitting the last two seasons between the Ottawa Senators and their AHL affiliate Bighamton Senators, Matt Puempel has re-signed with the team for another year.  The left winger and former first-round pick will earn $900K at the NHL level, and just $75K if he stays in the AHL.

Puempel has played 39 games in the NHL over the past two seasons, scoring four goals and six points during that time. The 2011 draft choice has performed well at the AHL level however, including 30 points in just 34 games last season.

The Senators will now turn their attention to their two remaining RFAs, Mike Hoffman and Cody Ceci, both important players to get under contract.  The team has almost $16MM left under the cap, but will assuredly not spend right to the ceiling.

Jaden Schwartz Signs Five-Year Deal

July 15, 2016 at 2:56 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The St. Louis Blues have continued to lock up their young stars long-term, as according to Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, they have signed restricted free agent forward Jaden Schwartz to a five-year deal worth just under $27MM.

The 24-year old Schwartz is coming off a season in which he missed a huge chunk of the season due to a broken ankle suffered in October.  He finished with 22 points in 33 games, but really made his presence felt in the playoffs, where he tallied another 14 points in 20 games, trailing the team leaders – Vladimir Tarasenko and Robby Fabbri – by just one point.

Before the broken ankle, Schwartz had put up back-to-back seasons of 25+ goals and 55+ points, making him one of the best young offensive forwards in the league. Now, the Blues have locked him up for $5.35MM (per Cap Friendly), a steal for a player of his performance. Cap Friendly also reports that he will receive a limited no-trade clause in years four and five, allowing him to submit a list of up to 15 teams that he will not accept a move to.

With the deals to Schwartz, Pheonix Copley and Jordan Binnington, St. Louis has now re-signed all of their restricted free agents from this year, and will not have to go to arbitration this summer. With what looks like a completed roster, it would be surprising to see St. Louis involved in any of the remaining free agents. If anything else happens with the Blues’ roster, it may still revolve around the departure of Kevin Shattenkirk, long rumored to be on the block this summer.

Snapshots: White, KHL, Nugent-Hopkins

July 15, 2016 at 2:16 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Arizona Coyotes have been a determined franchise since bringing in 27-year old GM John Chayka to captain the ship. The league’s youngest GM in history has already put his fingerprints all over the roster and, according to Sarah McLellan of AZCentral, seems to have targeted Ryan White in free agency due to an attribute many may have overlooked: versatility.

The 28-year old forward has never been much of a scoring threat in his career (though he is coming off a career-best 11 goals), but it’s that versatility that drew Chayka to him.  White can play both center and wing equally, and will provide a right-handed faceoff option in the defensive zone.  Here are some more notes from around the league:

  • The KHL has been aggressively pursuing expansion options across Europe and Asia, as seen from their recent move into China, and they may be headed towards the UK soon. In a couple of tweets this morning from separate sources, the league has reportedly reached some sort of an agreement to eventually put an expansion team in London.
  • The Sabres have hired Tom Ward and Adam Nightengale to join their coaching staff, as an assistant and video coach respectively. Ward was last seen coaching the Shattuck St. Mary’s Boys Prep team in Minnesota, where he won nine national championships. Nightengale was previously the director of hockey operations at Michigan State University.
  • Amid swirling trade rumors, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins admits that it sometimes gets into his head.  On Edmonton’s 630 CHED today (via Chris Nichols), he said “There’s just a lot of talk and really, it’s just guys kind of putting their own opinions out there. It kind of gets carried away, I think, a little bit. But yeah, it’s still in the back of your mind a little bit.”  The former first-overall pick hasn’t lived up to his high expectations (or contract) as of yet, scoring only 222 points in 313 career games, including just 34 last season (55 GP).
