Snapshots: Penguins, Lapointe, WHL

The vacant general manager position in Pittsburgh is a tricky but appealing role for many executives around the hockey world, and Pierre LeBrun rattled off an early list of candidates on the latest edition of TSN’s Insider Trading. Jason Botterill, Chris Drury, Mark Hunter, Tom Fitzgerald, Ron Hextall, Peter Chiarelli, Scott Mellanby, Mike Gillis, Laurence Gilman, John Ferguson, and Mike Futa are all on Pittsburgh’s radar and LeBrun believes the team wants to have the next GM in place over the next few weeks.

In the same segment, Darren Dreger speculates on the future of Pittsburgh’s star players and believes whoever comes in would owe it to Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang to have a conversation about the direction of the franchise. Don’t jump to conclusions and think that Crosby is all of a sudden on the trading block, given CEO David Morehouse’s claim that the team is still in “win-now” mode, but if Pittsburgh misses the playoffs this season they will be a fascinating situation to keep an eye on.

  • One front office member likely not on that list of candidates? Martin Lapointe, who has signed a three-year extension with the Montreal Canadiens to continue as director of player personnel through the 2023-24 season. Lapointe will also take on the role of director of amateur scouting, making him even more integral to the operation in Montreal. The former NHL forward was first hired as director of player development in 2012 and has worked his way up the front office ladder. He is on track to be a GM of his own down the road if he wants to be.
  • The WHL has been granted approval to return to play in the province of Alberta, starting their season on February 26. The five WHL clubs based in Alberta—the Red Deer Rebels, Edmonton Oil Kings, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Medicine Hat Tigers, and Calgary Hitmen—will form the Central Division and play a 24-game regular season entirely within the province. The league continues to work with the health officials in the other provinces and states to try and establish a start date for East, B.C., and U.S. divisions this season. There are WHL teams based in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Washington, and Oregon.

USHL Gaining Top Players With Canadian Junior Leagues Out Of Action

The United States Hockey League, USHL, is the top junior league in the U.S. and has been growing as a top developmental destination in recent years. Yet, they have never seen an influx of talent as they have this season. Early on, it was NCAA players whose teams (mostly Ivy League programs) canceled play this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, as the CHL leagues – OHL, WHL, and QMJHL – and other Junior-A Canadian leagues remain out of action, the flow of top players has continued. The USHL season is ongoing and has thus far operated without much delay, making it the greatest beneficiary on the other side of the border from the stalled Canadian leagues. This past week has shown that talented players throughout Canada are running low on patience with their current leagues and are now making the move south.

On Tuesday, the trend really began to pick up steam when the BCHL announced nine departures, four to the USHL including two top players from the powerhouse Penticton Vees. Buffalo Sabres forward prospect Matteo Costantini, who had joined Penticton this season before heading to the University of North Dakota next year, has now joined the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers. Well-regarded 2021-eligible defenseman Owen Murray is also headed to the NCAA next season as a University of Massachusetts commit, but instead of staying with the Vees this year, he has now joined the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers.

On Wednesday, Penticton lost another top defenseman, as projected 2021 second/third-round pick Jack Bar left for the USHL’s Chicago Steel and will not return to the Vees next season with Harvard University in his sights. However, the bigger story was the exodus from the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks. Detroit Red Wings 2020 second-round pick Cross Hanas and potential 2021 first-round forward Jack O’Brien, along with two other teammates, all left for the USL’s Lincoln Stars. Lincoln also picked up 2021 defenseman and Boston University commit Charles-Alexis Legault from the BCHL’s West Kelowna Warriors.

The biggest move to date is a major addition for the Sioux Falls Stampede. Forward Cole Sillinger, a consensus 2021 first-round pick, left the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers to head to the U.S. Sillinger recorded 53 points in 48 games with the Tigers last year and may just be one of the best players in the USHL now that he has arrived in Sioux Falls.

The question of course with all of these transfers is whether any of these players will leave if their Canadian teams are able to play this season. These USHL clubs undoubtedly hope they can retain their newfound talent throughout their season and postseason and they almost certainly will if junior play in Canada is unable to return. However, the WHL is already taking steps toward a possible return and other leagues will try to follow. Regardless, this influx of talent is great for the competition level of the USHL this year and its reputation moving forward as it looks to compete for top players with the CHL elite in the future.

Minor Transactions: 01/11/21

On a day that featured a record number of waiver placements, a long list of training camp cuts, and several NHL signings, anything else may seem especially “minor”. However, other transactions are still being made both at the NHL level and elsewhere. As the AHL eyes its return early next month, those roster have begun to get some extra attention, while action (and inaction) at the junior level continues to result in moves regarding NHL prospects. Here are the notable moves made today:

  • The Florida Panthers have finally recalled first-year pro prospect Alec Rauhauser from his overseas loan. The Bowling Green product signed with Florida back in March, but made his pro debut this season in Hungary of all places with DVTK Jegesmedvek of the Slovakian Extraliga. The Panthers opted not to invite Rauhauser to NHL training camp and to instead leave him in Europe. However, after 22 games with DVTK, Rauhauser is headed home. The club announced that the big defenseman has been assigned to the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch, the affiliate that the Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning will share this season.
  • Rauhauser’s DVTK teammate Haralds Egle is also on the move to the AHL, per the same announcement. The former Clarkson standout scorer had signed with the Manitoba Moose in April and was also on loan in Hungary. The parent club of the Moose, the Winnipeg Jets, will certainly be keeping a close eye on Egle in his first pro season, as the skilled winger was one of the top-scoring players in the NCAA over the past two seasons.
  • Chad Yetman will get a shot with the Chicago Blackhawks organization this season just months after being drafted. A sixth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, the overage forward has signed an AHL contract with the Rockford Ice Hogs for the coming campaign, the team announced. A prolific scorer with the OHL’s Erie Otters in 2019-20, Yetman is coming off a 43-goal, 74-point season to wrap up his junior career and hoping that ability translates to the pro game.
  • Another 2020 draft pick, Minnesota Wild fifth-rounder Pavel Novak, is also on the move. Only this is somewhat of a promotion within a loan, rather than something simple like a signing. Novak’s junior club, the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets, have announced that he has been loaned to Motor Ceske Budejovice of the Czech Extraliga. The Czech native had already been playing with HC Stadion Litomerice on loan from Kelowna, but has been promoted from the second-tier team to the top club, technically necessitating a second loan. With the WHL looking to return for a shortened season later next month, Novak may still be on the move yet again this season.

WHL Commits To 24-Game Season

With the WHL pushing their start back on multiple occasions, it was fair to wonder if the league, which is part of the top junior circuit in Canada, was actually going to get their season underway.  The league has indeed announced a commitment to play the 2020-21 campaign, a season that will last 24 games.  The start date remains to be determined (it had already been pushed back into February) and will be worked on in consultation with the various health authorities.  The WHL has teams in four provinces and two states so that process will certainly take some time.

Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek reports (Twitter link) that the target is a late-February start with games being played exclusively on weekends with some teams potentially sharing arenas and US-based teams potentially being relocated to Canadian cities.  That’s a lot to try to pull off over the next seven weeks.

This will certainly have an effect on NHL teams and their plans for their prospects in that league.  Players from a CHL team (WHL, OHL, or QMJHL) are ineligible to play in the AHL until they’re 20 or have four years of major junior experience but with those leagues not playing or even scheduled at the moment, they can attend AHL training camps which are expected to begin later this month.  Knowing that the WHL will eventually get underway means that those players won’t be able to be in the minors for long.

As things stand, plans for the other two major junior leagues remain uncertain although it wouldn’t be surprising to see the OHL try something similar.  The QMJHL got their season underway back in October with teams playing anywhere between five and 16 games before the plug was pulled indefinitely.

Minor Transactions: 01/08/21

In a few days, the list of daily minor transactions is going to explode, with teams shuffling players up and down to create cap flexibility. For now, things are generally limited to minor league signings and European transactions. Still, these can be important in the right situation, so we’ll continue to highlight the notable ones right here.

  • The Belleville Senators have signed Colby Williams to a one-year AHL contract, ending his run with the Hershey Bears after four seasons. Williams, 25, became a Group VI unrestricted free agent this offseason after spending his entire professional career in the minor leagues to this point. Last season he recorded six points in 31 games for Hershey. Williams was linked to the KHL’s Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk earlier this off-season but has opted to stay in North America. The team has also signed Ottawa prospect Cole Reinhardt to an amateur tryout contract. The 20-year-old forward was an overage selection by the Senators in the sixth round of the 2020 NHL Draft and will look to make the jump from the WHL to the pros with a strong showing in camp.
  • Dean Stewart, a seventh-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes, has signed with the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL after finishing his college career at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Stewart served as captain of the team last season and recorded 12 points in 34 games, but failed to sign an entry-level contract with Arizona in the summer. That made him an unrestricted free agent, but he’ll have to start the grind in the low minors for now.
  • Danny Kristo, who was originally selected in the second round by the Montreal Canadiens, will continue his European adventure in Germany after signing with the Augsburger Panther of the DEL. Kristo last played in North America during the 2016-17 season and has now suited up in the KHL, SHL, NLA, and DEL over the last three seasons. Even his KHL stops have taken him abroad, as instead of playing for the Russian-based teams he was with Dinamo Riga (Latvia) and Kunlun Red Star (China). Quite the traveler.
  • Los Angeles Kings standout prospect Jordan Spence has been traded in the QMJHL. The 19-year-old defenseman, a fourth-round pick in 2019, has been dealt to the Val-d’Or Foreurs by the Moncton Wildcats in exchange for young goaltender Vincent Filion, a 2023 first-round pick, and a 2022 third-round pick. The undersized defenseman is no small get for the Foreurs; Spence won the QMJHL’s Defenseman of the Year honors last season with 52 points in 60 games. The offensive blue liner is back at it this season with 16 points through 13 games and will be a major asset for league-leading Foreurs.

Vancouver Canucks Sign Carson Focht

The Vancouver Canucks have signed Carson Focht to a three-year, entry-level contract. The fifth-round pick has played parts of the last two seasons with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL and before that suited up for the Tri-City Americans.

Focht, 20, scored 56 points in 61 games for the Hitmen last season and was a sort of utility knife for the team, used in all situations. Though his offensive numbers aren’t as impressive as some other forward prospects, his versatility and polish suggest he may find success at the professional level. That should start this season with the Utica Comets, as he is of age to play in the AHL regardless of whether the WHL starts up or not.

The Canucks are up to 44 contracts for the year, meaning they still have some extra room to add should they feel more depth is required. Focht’s deal will kick in this season but he will be waiver-exempt.

Snapshots: Savoie, Perron, Ritchie

The Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL made big news today, announcing that Matthew Savoie has decided to leave the AJHL and will join the team shortly. Savoie, 17, is one of the top prospects for the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, even though he was denied exceptional status by the WHL in 2019. Selected first overall in the WHL bantam draft that year, he played 22 games with the Winnipeg Ice in 2019-20 when he became eligible and had suited up four times for the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the AJHL this season.

Blazing speed and elite hockey sense are Savoie’s calling cards and they likely will get him selected in the first few picks come 2022. For now, he just needs to get back on the ice and continue his development as he prepares for a career in professional hockey. Meanwhile, his brother Carter Savoie, a fourth-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 2020, is lighting it up as a freshman at the University of Denver, scoring 13 points in his first 12 games and earning NCHC Rookie of the Month honors.

  • David Perron was available to the media today after the St. Louis Blues hit the ice for the second time and explained to reporters including Lou Korac of NHL.com that he underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the offseason. The 32-year-old forward had one of the best seasons of his career last year for the Blues, scoring 25 goals and registering 60 points in just 71 games. In the early part of training camp, he’s been lining up beside Ryan O’Reilly and Brayden Schenn on the top line, with no expectation he’ll be anything other than full strength when the season begins.
  • Though it hasn’t been announced by the team, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet writes that Brett Ritchie “is the mystery PTO possibility” for the Calgary Flames. Ritchie, 27, played in 27 games for the Boston Bruins last season, eventually clearing waivers to go to the minor leagues. He was not given a qualifying offer by the Bruins, meaning he’s an unrestricted free agent looking for work just like so many other fringe NHL players.

San Jose Sharks Sign Tristen Robins To ELC

Jan 1: The Sharks have officially announced the contract for Robins. GM Doug Wilson released a short statement on his young forward:

Tristen came off an impressive performance at the end of last season, scoring 16 points in the final nine games. His game has improved since he made the move to center, and his puck possession, pursuit and skating ability fit in our system of how we want to play moving forward. We are excited to have him a part of our organization.

Dec 30: The San Jose Sharks appear happy with their early 2020 draft picks. After signing first-round pick Ozzy Weisblatt in October and watching their first second-round pick Thomas Bordeleau lead the University of Michigan in scoring thus far, the Sharks have now signed their other second-rounder to an entry-level contract as well. CapFriendly reports that Tristen Robins has signed his three-year ELC with the standard $925K AAV.

Robins, 19, was a polarizing prospect in the 2020 NHL Draft. Seen by many as a second-round pick and others as a third- or fourth-round talent, with others not having Robins on their board at all, Robins’ early selection was at least a slight surprise to some. However, those who watched Robins in the WHL last season as he recorded 33 goals and 73 points in 62 games will understand the Sharks’ excitement. Robins’ deft stickhandling and offensive instincts were apparent with the Saskatoon Blades last season and and sent him moving up draft boards.

With that said, don’t mistake Robins’ contract with San Jose looking to rush him to the pros. While the team does have a need for right-shot forwards, they have depth, youth, and talent up front in the NHL and AHL and can allow Robins (and Wiesblatt) time to develop. However, the contract is a testament to their faith in Robins as a prospect and he could be challenging for a roster spot in a year or two.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Seth Jarvis

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed their top draft choice, inking Seth Jarvis to a three-year entry-level contract. Jarvis was recently one of the final cuts from Team Canada for the World Juniors and is awaiting the start of the WHL season. Hurricanes GM Don Waddell released a short statement:

Seth is an extremely talented player with elite puck skills and scoring ability. He has a very bright future, and we are excited to watch him continue his development into an NHL player.

Jarvis, 18, was the 13th overall selection in this year’s draft after his outstanding 2019-20 season with the Portland Winterhawks. The Winnipeg-born center had 42 goals and 98 points in 58 games, finishing second in WHL scoring behind only Minnesota Wild prospect Adam Beckman. Unfortunately, he’s one of the top prospects that now hasn’t played a competitive game in nearly ten months, unless you count the intra-squad games at Canada’s WJC selection camp.

That long wait is important to remember when considering this contract. Though most top picks are quickly inked to their entry-level deals, it may be even more important for a player like Jarvis. Should the WHL cancel the season at any point, he would likely be eligible to join the AHL. Even before that he could potentially stick around with the Hurricanes on their taxi squad, learning from the NHL players that will one day be his teammates. Of course, his deal will only actually kick in if he plays in seven games with Carolina. It will likely slide forward as he continues his development.

Schedule Notes: NHL, QMJHL, WHL

Teams around the NHL have started to receive potential 2021 schedules according to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, and they include some very interesting oddities. For one, Johnston tweets that games have been grouped in two-game series against the same opponent but he has heard of three or even four-game segments as well. Several other reports including from Mark Spector of Sportsnet have indicated that the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks will play each other ten times, hitting the ice against the other Canadian teams just nine times. The All-Canadian division of course has one fewer team in it, leading to the different schedules.

Some other scheduling notes:

  • Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic wondered about the trade deadline in his recent column, noting that though it is scheduled for April 12, Canada-U.S. border restrictions could complicate things this year. Players acquired from a team based in the U.S. would likely face at least a two-week quarantine if joining a Canadian team for instance, making him quite a bit less valuable in a deadline deal.
  • Carolina Hurricanes GM Don Waddell told reporters including Dan Rosen of NHL.com that players recalled from the AHL will have to go through the “taxi squad” period and quarantine for at least seven days before joining the NHL club, meaning there will be no day-of recalls this season. That too will complicate things this season and make teams think hard about who they want to include with their extra roster spots.
  • The QMJHL has announced that their season will not resume until January 21 at the earliest, with the Quebec-based teams starting the next day. There hasn’t been a game played since the end of November due to COVID-19 concerns and restrictions, meaning it will be nearly two months between competitive action for many prospects.
  • The WHL draft meanwhile, which is normally scheduled for May, has now been moved to December for the upcoming year. As the league explained today, the decision was to give 2006-born players more time to be evaluated in competitive situations. The 2021 WHL Cup, which is a showcase for WHL draft-eligible players (not NHL draft-eligible) will be held in October.
