Brian Pinho Re-Signs With Washington Capitals

May 20, 2019 at 1:16 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After inking Shane Gersich earlier today, the Washington Capitals have now re-signed another restricted free agent. Brian Pinho has signed a one-year two-way contract for 2019-20, which will pay him $700K in the NHL and $100K in the AHL.

Pinho, 24, was originally selected in the sixth round in 2013 but wouldn’t join the Capitals organization for another five years. After playing one year in the USHL and four years at Providence College, Pinho signed his two-year entry-level contract with Washington last April and burned the first year without even suiting up. This season then was his first taste of professional hockey, and he found out it’s a little more difficult to produce at this level. In 81 total games for the Hershey Bears, Pinho recorded just 14 points.

Still, there was a reason why the Capitals allowed him to burn a year without actually playing. Pinho could have waited until August 2018 to become an unrestricted free agent, something the Capitals front office obviously wanted to avoid. Even as a late-round pick, Pinho had built himself into a legitimate NHL prospect after recording 72 points in 79 games over his last two college seasons.

Though his totals at the minor league were less than impressive, it’s not time to give up on Pinho just yet. He’ll be given another chance to adjust to the pace of the professional game, and hopefully find his footing in the AHL. Like with Gersich, the Capitals have to be hoping they can squeeze some inexpensive NHL contributions out of players like this as they navigate a tricky salary cap situation.

Shane Gersich Re-Signs With Washington Capitals

May 20, 2019 at 11:19 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Washington Capitals have inked one of their restricted free agents, re-signing Shane Gersich to a one-year, two-way contract. Gersich will earn $700K at the NHL level and $115K in the AHL.

The 22-year old forward was a fifth-round selection of the Capitals in 2014, and signed his entry-level deal last spring after three years at the University of North Dakota. He made his NHL debut down the stretch for the Capitals and even got into two playoff contests during their Stanley Cup run. This season Gersich spent the entire year in the minor leagues with the Hershey Bears, but struggled at times to find much consistency. He finished with 24 points in 66 games, but still has a bright future.

Washington has a dozen other restricted free agents to deal with this offseason, including some high profile names like Jakub Vrana and Andre Burakovsky. Getting deals done for minor league players like Gersich relieves some of the work load, but certainly doesn’t make things easier on GM Brian MacLellan and his team. The salary cap has made life difficult for the Capitals front office in recent years, and they may need to start getting some NHL contributions from young players like Gersich in the near future.

Gersich will be a restricted free agent once again next summer.

Andre Burakovsky Hopes To Stay In Washington

May 19, 2019 at 7:54 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Over the last several seasons the Washington Capitals have been navigating a tricky cap situation, regularly sitting right at the upper limit with very little flexibility. As the 2019 offseason gets underway they have some tough decisions about how to keep their group competitive without overspending. Players like Brett Connolly may end up as cap casualties after earning raises, while others may find themselves on the trade block to free up some room. One of the examples of the latter is Andre Burakovsky, whose restricted free agent situation was examined today by Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post.

Khurshudyan breaks down how the Capitals in the past have decided not to issue qualifying offers only to continue negotiations anyway, even using Connolly himself as an example from a few years ago. That’s the tactic she expects the team to use in Burakovsky’s case, given the expensive $3.25MM offer the team would need to extend. Still, it’s not like the young forward wants to go anywhere else:

I love Washington, I love my teammates, I love everyone around — everything, the organization. My goal is to stay, and hopefully I will be able to.

Burakovsky, 24, recorded just 25 points in 76 games this season, the worst scoring rate of his career so far. Originally selected 23rd overall in 2013, he has never seemed to find the offensive production that he experienced in junior. In fact, with a career high of just 38 points through five seasons there is reason to doubt he’ll ever really fully reach his potential.

The Capitals are still in a window of Stanley Cup contention while the core is in tact, but need to find a way to surround Alex Ovechkin and company with a better supporting cast. Connolly, Carl Hagelin, Devante Smith-Pelly and Brooks Orpik are all scheduled to become unrestricted free agents, leaving some relatively substantial holes on the depth chart. With a new contract for Jakub Vrana the biggest priority of the offseason—except perhaps extensions for Nicklas Backstrom and Braden Holtby—the team has plenty of work to do over the next few weeks.

Still, if Burakovsky could be retained on a more inexpensive contract he would be a very valuable asset. Leaving him without a qualifying offer is obviously a risk, given that it would make him an unrestricted free agent, but if he is committed to the organization it may be the savvy move by GM Brian MacLellan. Teams have until June 25th to submit qualifying offers.

Eastern Notes: Canadiens, Armia, Capitals’ Defense, Kadri

May 18, 2019 at 4:35 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 8 Comments

After a couple of down years, the Montreal Canadiens had a much more respectable season last year and with things looking up, general manager Marc Bergevin is going to want to add to his team. With close to $10MM to spend this year, the team could consider going after big-name free agents.

However, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette writes that a second option would be for the Canadiens to go after Toronto Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner. While offer sheets in the NHL are quite rare, that could change this offseason with so many intriguing restricted free agents out there. The team could conceivably sign Marner to an offer sheet and if the Canadiens offer a deal between $8.54MM to $10.56MM, and successfully pry him away from Toronto, the compensation would be reasonable in two first-round picks, a second-rounder and a third-rounder.

Even if Toronto matches any offer sheet, the Canadiens will have still accomplished quite a bit as the rival franchise is currently struggling with salary cap issues and a big offer would only hamper general manager Kyle Dubas’ long-term plans.

  • Sticking with the Canadiens, while one of the main reasons that the Montreal Canadiens took Joel Armia in the Steve Mason deal was that Armia was from the same hometown in Finland as last year’s top pick Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Armia has been significant in helping Kotkaniemi to transition to North America. However, while Armia’s numbers have been solid when playing next to Kotkaniemi on the ice, his numbers when playing without him haven’t been that good. The Athletic’s Marc Dupont (subscription required) writes the team needs to be cautious about signing Armia, who hits restricted free agency this summer, to a long-term contract. Armia, who tallied 13 goals as a third-liner, and probably should be signed to a short-term deal to assess for now.
  • The Washington Capitals didn’t get back to the Stanley Cup Finals liked they hoped and with continuous salary cap issues to deal with, there is a good chance the Capitals’ blueline will have to be reconstructed, according to the Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan. The scribe writes that the team might be ready to move on from veteran defenseman Matt Niskanen, after the team acquired Nick Jensen at the trade deadline. Jensen is four years younger than Niskanen and has the same skillset. The team is also expected to move on from Brooks Orpik, giving more opportunity to the team’s young defensive prospects it has been amassing over the last couple of years, including Jonas Siegenthaler, Lucas Johansen, Alex Alexeyev, Connor Hobbs, Colby Williams and Tyler Lewington.
  • Sam Carchidi of Philly.com writes that the Philadelphia Flyers are going to want to make some type of splash to add a big-name player either through free agency or via trade. While throwing out names like Matt Duchene and Kevin Hayes are one option, the scribe suggests that the Flyers should consider trading for Toronto Maple Leafs’ Nazem Kadri, who is coming off a career-low 16 goals. With Toronto management down on him somewhat, the Flyers could get a steal of a deal as the center has three years on his deal at a reasonable $4.5MM AAV. Kadri would make an excellent second-line center, who could slide back to the third line once Nolan Patrick is ready to move up.

Juuso Ikonen Clears Unconditional Waivers

May 18, 2019 at 11:11 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Saturday: Ikonen has cleared waivers, Kuc reports.

Friday: The Washington Capitals have placed Juuso Ikonen on unconditional waivers according to Chris Kuc of The Athletic, likely for the purpose of a contract termination. Ikonen had one year remaining on his entry-level deal, but didn’t find much success at the AHL level this season.

Ikonen, 24, was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the SHL in 2018 after several years of solid play in Europe. The Finnish forward had suited up twice at the World Juniors and shown enough offensive upside to make the Capitals believe he could contribute in North America, but after registering just 14 points in 54 games for the Hershey Bears he’ll be allowed to return home.

International signings like these are often lottery tickets for teams dealing with cap trouble like Washington, hoping they can get a depth player at bargain bin rates. They haven’t worked out for the Capitals of late though, with Ikonen joining Maximillian Kammerer as terminated players this spring.

Nathan Walker Open To Remaining With Washington

May 11, 2019 at 10:52 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

  • Despite not seeing much NHL action this season, Capitals winger Nathan Walker is open to re-signing with the team this offseason, reports NBC Sports Washington’s J.J. Regan. He got into just three games with Washington in 2018-19 but posted a career high in points per game with AHL Hershey.  The Caps are likely going to be looking for several players at or near the league minimum salary for next season to round out their roster, something that Walker is certainly aware of.  However, as he’s 25 with more than three years of pro experience and just 13 NHL games under his belt, he is eligible for Group VI free agency this summer.

Snapshots: Blue Jackets, Barber, Davidsson

May 7, 2019 at 1:41 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Columbus Blue Jackets went all-in at the trade deadline this season by adding several pending unrestricted free agents in Matt Duchene, Ryan Dzingel, Adam McQuaid and Keith Kinkaid. The reasoning was likely in part due to the fact that Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky, two of the team’s best players, are also heading to free agency and had already turned down extension talks. GM Jarmo Kekalainen knew this was his last shot with those two on the roster and took it, but now faces an offseason where he will watch several top names depart. If Panarin, Bobrovsky, Duchene and others do leave, he’s not losing sleep over it. In conversation with Tom Reed of The Athletic (subscription required) Kekalainen explained what he’s looking for out of his players:

I think it’s important moving forward that we have guys who are proud to be Blue Jackets, proud to be living in Columbus and loving it here. It’s really important that they bleed blue or whatever you want to call it.  … Guys who want to be here are going to be here and the guys who don’t want to be here — good luck.

Kekalainen admitted that he would “do it in a second again” but the Blue Jackets now face the reality that their team will look very different come September. That might not be the end of them though, as there are several bright spots still on the roster. Seth Jones and Zach Werenski still represent two of the game’s top young defensemen, and players like Pierre-Luc Dubois and Alexandre Texier have proven they are capable of providing real contributions at the NHL level. Not to mention the likes of Boone Jenner, Josh Anderson and Oliver Bjorkstrand who are still in their mid-twenties and under contract for reasonable amounts. As always, Kekalainen and the Blue Jackets will be one of the most interesting teams in the league to watch this offseason as they try to move on from this chapter of their history.

  • Speaking of moving on, Washington Capitals forward Riley Barber appears to be ready to do just that. Barber spoke to J.J. Regan of NBC Sports Washington, and explained that given his lack of opportunity in Washington he isn’t likely to return to the organization next season. The 25-year old is set to become a Group VI unrestricted free agent this summer after playing just three NHL games since signing with the team in 2015, but is coming off an impressive 60-point season in the AHL.
  • Marcus Davidsson was selected 37th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 2017 but they have been happy so far to let him continue to develop in Sweden. That doesn’t appear to be changing, as Davidsson has signed a two-year deal to remain in the SHL, this time with the Vaxjo Lakers. The 20-year old center could actually become an unrestricted free agent if the Sabres don’t sign him by June 1st, 2021.

Snapshots: Jonsson-Fjallby, Ferschweiler, Penguins

May 6, 2019 at 1:29 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Washington Capitals have assigned Axel Jonsson-Fjallby to the Hershey Bears, after his Swedish club recently failed to capture the SHL title. Jonsson-Fjallby continued his development in Sweden this season despite having already signed his entry-level contract with Washington, but will now join Hershey as they try to climb out of their 0-2 hole in the second round of the Calder Cup playoffs.

The 21-year old forward actually played 16 games with the Bears this season before exercising his European Assignment Clause to force a loan back to Sweden. His regular season with Djurgardens wasn’t exceptional, but the fifth-round pick exploded in the playoffs with seven goals and 12 points in 19 games and should be returning to North America with quite a bit of confidence in his offensive game.

  • Frank Seravalli of TSN reports that the Detroit Red Wings have not renewed the contract of assistant coach Pat Ferschweiler, meaning head coach Jeff Blashill will have a new face on the bench this season. Ferschweiler had been with Detroit since 2015-16 when Blashill was promoted to the NHL job, but with Steve Yzerman now in as GM there was always likely to be some changes to the organization.
  • The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have announced a principle agreement on a 10-year arena lease extension, meaning to keep the franchise in Northeast Pennsylvania for the next decade. The team has been the primary AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins since they debuted in 1999 and have experienced nearly unparalleled regular season success. When the team missed the Calder Cup playoffs this season it marked the end of a 16-year run of qualifying for the postseason, and just the third time in team history that they had missed. Despite all of that success, the team is still looking for their first league title.

Washington Capitals Not Likely To Bring Back Devante Smith-Pelly

May 5, 2019 at 11:01 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

Although the Washington Capitals have their affairs in order with most of their impact players after an early-round exit in the playoffs this year, the franchise still has a number of smaller contracts that it will have to deal with in the coming months. The contracts of restricted free agents Jakub Vrana and Andre Burakovsky and unrestricted free agents Carl Hagelin and Brett Connolly need to be dealt with, among others.

One contract the Capitals aren’t likely to deal with this summer is unrestricted free agent Devante Smith-Pelly, who likely will not be returning to Washington next season, according to NBC Sports J.J. Regan. While there was speculation that the team might consider bringing back one of the team’s key players in their Stanley Cup Championship run last season under the right conditions, Regan notes that changed after comments from general manager Brian MacLellan. “Internally we had a couple of issues we had to work through,” MacLellan said of Smith-Pelly, which was not exactly a vote of confidence.

Many have claimed that those “issues” stemmed from conditioning issues and they are likely the reason that the Capitals intend to move on from Smith-Pelly. The big winger struggled this season after scoring seven playoff goals last spring, including several timely ones. Even though Smith-Pelly had more lucrative offers last summer, he opted to sign a one-year, $1MM deal to remain with the Capitals. However, the season didn’t go as planned as he tallied just eight points in 54 games before the team placed him on waivers, sending him to the AHL. He was recalled after T.J. Oshie was injured in the playoffs, but played sparingly. Regan asked Smith-Pelly about his conditioning, which he flatly denied, but did admit he was forced to change his off-season workout plans due to the shortened break:

The summer was different for a lot of guys. I mean, very short. Guys are hurt going into the summer so obviously you don’t have the same routine as you’ve had in years past to get ready. I guess that just affected me more than some other guys. You try to get your footing and stuff happens.

With the team right up against the salary cap and key decisions to make about Burakovsky, Vrana, Hagelin, and Connolly, as well as defensive veteran Brooks Orpik, the team does need several cheap contracts on the book, but it looks like they might be ready to look elsewhere for that talent.

Nicklas Backstrom And Braden Holtby Open To Signing Extensions This Summer

May 4, 2019 at 9:50 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

  • The Capitals have a pair of players that will be entering the final season of their contracts in July in center Nicklas Backstrom and Braden Holtby. Both players indicated to J.J. Regan of NBC Sports Washington that they’re open to signing an extension this summer to forego testing the open market.  The pair have only ever played for Washington but will be owed raises on their current deals.  Backstrom’s $6.7MM AAV is well below market value for someone that has spent considerable time on the front line while Holtby ($6.1MM) is also fairly cheap for an established starter.
