Minor Transactions: Last Day Of The Regular Season

The Washington Capitals, who have long since clinched the President’s Trophy for the best record in the NHL this season, have next to nothing to play for in their 2016-17 regular season finale. What better use for such a game than to reward a time-tested contributor to the organization. The Capitals announced today that they have recalled Garrett Mitchell, as well as Chandler Stephenson, from the AHL’s Hershey Bears for the last game of the season. Mitchell, the Hersey captain, will make his NHL debut at 25 after being a sixth-round selection of the Capitals back in 2009. Far from an offensive juggernaut, Mitchell is instead a physical two-way forward who makes up for his lack of points by sticking up for the Bears’ younger players and leading by example in his own end. It is a classy move by Washington to give a player who has worked hard for the organization a brief glimpse at NHL life, even though his ceiling appears to be a nothing more than a fourth-line player at this time.

Around the league, the transactions are coming in fast:

  • Washington’s opponent tonight is the Florida Panthers and newly-recalled young goalie Sam Brittain. It remains to be seen if Brittain will make his NHL debut tonight, but he’ll at least be on the bench as Florida announced that the 24-year-old had been promoted from the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds for the game. Brittain has played mostly in the ECHL this season and is far from being a regular NHLer any time soon, but will at least get a look at big league action in the season finale.
  • Another goalie getting a rare look at the highest level is the New York Rangers’ Magnus Hellberg. Buried behind all-world keeper Henrik Lundqvist and one of the more reliable backups in the league, Antti Raanta, Hellberg was surely excited to hear that he had been called up from the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. Hellberg, 26, has never started an NHL game and that won’t change tonight as Raanta gets the call for the Rangers. However, Hellberg has seen the ice three times in his career and has strung together several strong AHL seasons in a row, so gaining some more experience tonight, even from the bench, brings him closer to an NHL future.
  • A goalie headed the other way today is the Montreal Canadiens’ Charlie Lindgren. Despite nothing but success in his few NHL appearances early in his young career, the Habs are set in net with Carey Price and Al Montoya. Lindgren will have to wait for opportunity to strike for a longer stint with the Canadiens, as he’ll head back down to the AHL and the St. John’s Ice Caps alongside defenseman Brett Lernout, the team announced.
  • Another pair headed back to the minors are Winnipeg Jets’ prospects Kyle Connor and Nelson Nogier. Following their season finale yesterday, the Jets decided today to return the duo to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose to get some final play time in this season. While the Jets expected more than five points in 20 games from Connor in his rookie season, after being a Hobey Baker finalist for the University of Michigan last year, expect him to play a major role for Winnipeg in 2017-18.
  • Another player set to take on a major role next year is Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Robert Hagg. Fans can get a preview of the prospect-studded blue line that Philly is likely to roll out in 2017-18 when Hagg makes his NHL debut today. The team announced his recall this morning from the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms, and he will skate alongside the likes of Shayne Gostisbehere and Ivan Provorov tonight and Travis Sanheim and Samuel Morin as well next year in a truly impressive collection of young talent.
  • Across the state, the Pittsburgh Penguins are planning on resting some of their players today – those that aren’t already injured anyway – and have called up a trio of players from the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to help fill the voids. Oskar Sundqvist and Derrick Pouliot, two names familiar to Penguins fans, will return to the lineup, while Jean-Sebastien Dea will make his NHL debut. A longtime WBS contributor, Dea’s work ethic and consistency has finally earned him his first shot at the pros for a team that is in desperate need of depth that can step up their play.
  • Pittsburgh’s Round One opponent, the Columbus Blue Jackets, are adding some promising young talent of their own in forward Sonny Milano. The team announced that they had promoted the 2014 first-rounder from the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters and that he will get the call today against the Toronto Maple Leafs as the Jackets look to reverse their recent luck before the postseason gets underway. Milano has only skated in three games with Columbus this season, but leads the Monsters in scoring with 46 points in 61 games.
  • The St. Louis Blues announced that they have recalled defenseman Chris Butler from the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. However, Butler’s return to the NHL lineup may be overshadowed by the possibility that Vladimir Sobotka could also make his season debut after a long hiatus from the team while playing in the KHL.
  • With an extremely disappointing season finally over in Dallas, the Stars have moved a slew of players back down to the AHL’s Texas Stars to give them some play time before the end of the season. Forwards Jason Dickinson, Mark McNeill, Gemel Smith, Denis Gurianov, and Remi Elie and defenseman Julius Honka will all head back to Texas, a team that, like its affiliate, has no chance at the playoffs either.

Pittsburgh Penguins Re-Assign Pouliot; Recall Corrado, Sundqvist

Despite winning 4-0 on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Penguins have decided to make a change prior to their game against the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Struggling young defender Derrick Pouliot has been sent back down, while Frank Corrado and Oskar Sundqvist have been called up from the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. The team will still be without stars Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Olli Maattaa and several others for tonight’s game.

Pouliot, 23, continues to squander chances with the NHL club with lax defensive play and positioning errors. There is no doubt he has the talent to play at the highest level with the puck on his stick, but his coverage in front of the net and battle along the boards is still not good enough for a team looking for another championship. The former eighth-overall pick will go back down and try to find another gear in his game before the next opportunity presents itself.

Meanwhile, Corrado will get his first chance with the NHL team since coming over in a deadline deal with Toronto that saw Eric Fehr go the other way. Corrado’s lack of opportunity was well documented in Toronto, as he floundered somewhere between leagues for months at a time. The 23-year old has played seven games for the WBS Penguins since the deal, registering just one point. Pittsburgh will see if he can bring some level of defensive responsibility as they look to find a partner for Mark Streit until someone returns from injury.

Sundqvist has dominated the AHL while he’s been there this season, scoring 40 points in 55 games. The big forward has bounced up and down this season and gotten into four games with Pittsburgh, held pointless throughout. The 22-year old third-round pick looks like he’s developing nicely into a bottom-six player capable of some secondary scoring and adding a physical element to the game.

As reported yesterday, the Ottawa Senators will host an outdoor game next year. The “NHL 100 Classic” will be held on December 16th, 2017 to honor the first NHL game played in Ottawa 100 years prior (actually December 17th, 1917). The Senators will welcome the Montreal Canadiens to TD Place, the football stadium right along the Rideau Canal.

Just a few weeks after the Canadian Football League’s Grey Cup, TD Place will have extra seating installed to accommodate the extra crowd. The Stadium currently seats 24,000 for football, but expect that to grow substantially. BMO Place in Toronto added more than 10,000 seats for this year’s Centennial Classic, after hosting it’s own Grey Cup earlier in the winter. This will be the Senators’ first hosted outdoor game.

Pittsburgh Penguins Recall Derrick Pouliot From AHL

With a game tonight against the New Jersey Devils, the Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled prospect Derrick Pouliot from Wilkes-Barre Scranton of the AHL. This likely means that Ron Hainsey, injured in Wednesday’s loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, won’t be able to go tonight.

Pouliot has spent time up with Pittsburgh in each of the last three seasons, playing a total of just eight games this year. The 23-year old was the eighth-overall pick in the 2012 draft, but has yet to establish himself as a consistent NHL player. The hopes are still sky-high for Pouliot, who was drafted one spot ahead of Jacob Trouba, the Winnipeg Jets star defender.

Pittsburgh will hope Pouliot can contribute a bit more this time around, as he has been held scoreless this year. A good puck moving defenseman in the AHL, he just hasn’t found that level of play yet in the NHL. He’ll have to do it quick though, as the Penguins are in a fight for the top of the Metropolitan Division, and need all hands on deck.

When Justin Schultz came out of the University of Wisconsin to sign with the Edmonton Oilers, it started out well. With 48 points in 34 AHL contests during the lockout, it did look like he had Norris-trophy potential, as then-GM Craig MacTavish said later. As Mark Spector of Sportsnet writes, it started to erode for Schultz soon after. The defenseman now sits among the leaders in points in the league from defensemen, and has been a perfect fit in Pittsburgh this season.

While Spector goes through the history of his demise in Edmonton, it will be interesting to follow his contract negotiation this summer. At just $1.4MM this season, Schultz is due for a huge raise as he becomes a restricted free agent on July 1st. At 26 years old, the Penguins will be buying out almost entirely UFA years if they extend him long-term, meaning the AAV will be substantial. Pittsburgh will have an interesting off season, with Schultz, Conor Sheary, Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot all RFAs, and several key players set to hit the open market. While Schultz will likely be priority #1, it will be a tough negotiation.

  • The NHL has handed down $2000 embellishment fines to both Jake Muzzin and Johnny Gaudreau for separate incidents. The league gives out a warning on the first instance, meaning that Muzzin and Gaudreau have been told already to stop diving. Muzzin in particular was given his warning after an October 14th game against Philadelphia, and this fine comes from an incident against Vancouver last weekend. Subsequent fines will increase to a maximum of $5000, but will also carry a financial penalty for the head coach should the player receive five citations.
  • Travis Zajac will miss the New Jersey Devils next game as he left the team today to return home. His wife is expecting their third child any day now. With the Devils out of a playoff race and stuck at the bottom of the standings, Zajac likely won’t be rushed back into the lineup. Their quest now for the best draft pick available is more important than winning games.

Morning Notes: Concussion Protocol, Tynan, AHL

The GM Meetings will wrap up today without much to say. The tagline of the three days in Boca Raton might as well have been “status quo”, as nothing seems to be changing. That includes the concussion protocol for goaltenders, as Ken Campbell of The Hockey News writes.

Goalies across the league have complained about the process, saying that taking a netminder off the ice and out of his rhythm is hurting the game. It’s worth it though, if it prevents even a single concussion from happening. For now, the GMs and league will leave the protocol the same and treat goaltenders like any other player who suffers a head shot on the ice.

  • The Blue Jackets have sent T.J. Tynan back down after making his NHL debut last night. In a 2-0 win over the New Jersey Devils, Tynan played just over seven minutes and had a single shot on goal. The 25-year old playmaker will return to the Cleveland Monsters for the time being and wait for his next opportunity.
  • Today is the AHL trade deadline where, like its NHL counterpart, teams can move players to contenders and preserve their playoff eligibility. Patrick Williams of NHL.com put together a nice summary of all the moves made in the AHL up to this point, including names like Tom Gilbert and Teemu Pulkkinen. There will likely be several moves made as teams load up for a Calder Cup run, though very few (if any) will include real prospects.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled both Tom Sestito and Cameron Gaunce today, as they face off against the big Winnipeg Jets tonight. In a corresponding move, they sent Derrick Pouliot back to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. Sestito especially gives the Penguins another big body to avoid being pushed around by the Jets, though he doesn’t offer much in the way off offense.

Deadline Primer: Pittsburgh Penguins

With the trade deadline now just weeks away, we’re going to start taking a closer look at each team.  Where do they stand, what do they need to do, and what assets do they have to fill those needs?

The defending Stanley Cup champions are aiming to be the first team to win two in a row since the Red Wings did so in the late 1990s. However, their quest to repeat will be hampered by injuries and a severe lack of cap space. Captain Sidney Crosby is dominating, leading the NHL in goals with 34 and second only to Connor McDavid in points, despite playing in eight fewer games. GM Jim Rutherford has a goaltending controversy on his hands, but appears comfortable waiting until the summer to deal with it.

Trade Chips

The Penguins have already traded their second round pick to acquire Ron Hainsey from the Hurricanes. They could also be willing to move their first round pick in a weak draft to bolster their lineup, but they would need to send money out in almost any deal made. In addition to draft picks, the Penguins could trade someone like Derrick Pouliot. The young defenseman has struggled to earn a permanent slot in the Penguins lineup, and would be of interest to building teams.

Of course, Rutherford could take the nuclear option and trade Marc-Andre Fleury. It would clear $5.75MM off their cap, in addition to the player(s) coming back. While Rutherford has said he would prefer to wait until the summer to make a goaltending move, he has also said what he does will depend on how Fleury feels.

Team Needs

1) Goaltending clarity – The Penguins will need to make some kind of move in the blue paint before the expansion draft. Because Fleury has a no-move clause (NMC), he must be protected; that would leave Murray vulnerable, and Vegas would need to be heavily bribed not to select him. Instead, expect the Penguins to either convince Fleury to agree to a trade now or before the expansion draft, or at worst to waive his NMC and head to Vegas. The Penguins could make a move now and acquire a goaltender in return for Fleury to maintain their depth, but improve their roster elsewhere. Despite below-average numbers this season, Fleury still has value. What Rutherford needs to determine is whether Fleury has more value on the bench during the playoffs or in a trade.

2) Good health – The Penguins have a solid defensive core and three of the best offensive players in the game. While they can’t acquire “health” at the deadline, they can improve their overall depth to fight back against injuries. Look for a few minor additions from Rutherford to boost the depth of their roster as they prepare for another long playoff run.

Olli Maatta Out Six Weeks After Hand Surgery

Give the Pittsburgh Penguins credit for moving quickly on this one. After injuring his left hand in last night’s win over the Winnipeg Jets, defenseman Olli Maatta underwent successful surgery this morning, according to GM Jim Rutherford. Maatta is expected to be out six weeks while he recovers, and should return just in time for the playoffs.

Maatta was hit by Adam Lowry in the second period last night, and left the ice cradling his left hand. Not long after, Justin Schultz was also the recipient of a big hit, this one from Dustin Byfuglien, and left with an apparent head or neck injury. Neither defenseman returned to action, leaving Kris Letang, Brian Dumoulin, Ian Cole, and Trevor Daley to each log over 23 minutes on the blue line and, amazingly, help to erase a third period deficit and escape with a win. There is no word yet on Schultz’ condition, but it is clear now that the Penguins will need to find a solution other than playing down a defenseman to make up for the long-term loss of Maata.

The 22-year-old Finnish defender is about as solid in his own end as one can be at his age. Though he doesn’t bring much in the way of offense, with just one goal and six assists this season, Maatta is relied on to play big minutes in Pittsburgh and is a top shot-blocker and short-handed specialist. The Penguins can always find offense from their blue line, but they face a harder task in replacing Maatta’s defense as they jockey for postseason positioning down the stretch. First and foremost, expect Cole to see a much greater role over the next two months. Chad Ruhwedel and Steve Oleksy would then be the next men up as in-house options to replace Maatta, but don’t inspire much confidence. Derrick Pouliot and David Warsofsky may be better options, but are more offensively-inclined and wouldn’t make up for Maataa’s loss in the defensive zone. Instead, the Penguins, who had already been rumored to be looking for a veteran depth defenseman, may increase the vigor of their search. A smart, physical, two-way blue liner could be a key addition by Rutherford to keep Pittsburgh afloat in the competitive Metropolitan Division, at least until Maatta is ready to return.

With more and more teams getting tighter to the salary cap, draft picks have become quite an important commodity.  In recent years, most teams have been unwilling to part with their first rounders as those picks are expected to serve as cheap talent before too long.  As a result of what’s expected to be a weaker draft class, that may not be the case this season, suggests ESPN’s Craig Custance (Insider required).

A pair of executives suggested to Custance that they’d be willing to part with their first round pick this year but only if they’re getting someone under contract or team control beyond this season.

Last year, only one first rounder was dealt at the trade deadline when Chicago dealt theirs to Winnipeg as part of the return for rental forward Andrew Ladd, a move that didn’t exactly pan out well for them.  If some players with term left on their deal get moved by the deadline, we could see more first rounders changing hands over the next month or so.

Other tidbits from around the league:

  • In a reader chat, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette notes that the Penguins would be willing to move young blueliner Derrick Pouliot in a trade, something that wasn’t the case earlier. The former first round pick has not yet progressed to the point where he can be called a regular NHL defender and is in the final year of his entry level contract.  He has eight points in 18 AHL games this season and has been held off the scoresheet in seven NHL contests.
  • Although center Jarret Stoll is currently working in a player development capacity with the Kings, he emphasized to Puck Daddy’s Josh Cooper that he has not retired. The 34 year old split last season between the Rangers and Wild and attended training camp with the Blue Jackets on a PTO but was unable to secure a deal.  However, given his prowess on the penalty kill and at the faceoff dot, he could be a serviceable replacement forward should a team get hit with some injuries up front.
  • The Flyers have not made any decisions regarding their pending unrestricted free agents, GM Ron Hextall told Wayne Fish of the Burlington County Times. If Philadelphia falls out of the playoff race between now and the trade deadline, a potential rental option would be blueliner Mark Streit.  While he agrees there’s not much point in opening extension talks at the moment, he indicated that he’s hoping to remain with the team: “At this point, I just want to play and I want to make it into the playoffs with the Flyers.  That’s on my mind. I love it here, love playing for the Flyers.”  Streit carries a cap hit of $5.25MM and has a list of ten teams that he would accept a trade to as part of his modified no-trade clause.

Penguins Notes: Fleury, Pouliot, Jarry

With the news that Matt Murray is out again and considered “week-to-week” with a lower body injury, Marc-Andre Fleury will again resume the duties of starting goaltender for the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, the question of the net share for the Penguins now needs to expand beyond just the next few weeks. With yet another injury this season, Murray is beginning to get a reputation of being “fragile”. Still technically a rookie, it’s too early for any definitive judgement on Murray, but his injury tendencies need to be considered when planning for the near future. As was discussed earlier this season, the Penguins face one of the more difficult Expansion Draft scenarios this season, as they would be forced to protect Fleury, due to his no-movement clause, and leave Murray exposed to selection should both remain on the roster into June. Many have thus presumed that Pittsburgh will trade Fleury at all costs this season. With growing concerns about Murray’s reliability, that may no longer be the plan. Even though Murray has been vastly superior to his veteran teammate in 2016-17, Fleury still represents a far better option than most potential replacements on the market right now. If the Penguins, surely a Stanley Cup contender again this season, trade Fleury and Murray goes down again, it would cripple their title chances. Same goes for next season as well. Although teams like the Dallas Stars or St. Louis Blues will likely make plays for Fleury in the coming months, Pittsburgh will likely now look at options that include keeping both keepers through the end of this season. More confusion being added to one of the most intriguing stories of the season.

  • With Murray out again, the Penguins have recalled goalie Tristan Jarry from the AHL. The player headed back to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is defenseman Derrick Pouliot. Once thought to be the future on the blue line in Pittsburgh, Pouliot is struggling again this year and has seen limited play time, prompting his move to the minors for the second time this season. Although he is an analytics darling, Pouliot’s possession ability has not translated into meaningful production at the NHL level. The eighth overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, Pouliot was a superstar with the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks as a junior player. He was expected to contribute right away at the highest level, and did play in 34 games in Pittsburgh in his first pro season. However, that dropped to just 22 regular season games and 2 postseason games for the eventual Stanley Cup champions last season and just seven game thus far in 2016-17. Over that time, Pouliot has just two goals and 12 assists (zero points this season) in 63 games while posting a career rating of -10.  He also has no points and is a -4 in seven AHL games this year. In a normal season, this could simply be written off as a promising 22-year-old defenseman developing slowly and any premature judgement would be unwarranted. However, this is not a normal season, with the Expansion Draft looming this off-season, and the Penguins need to make a decision on Pouliot. If, as expected, Pittsburgh chooses to protect seven forwards and three defenseman rather than protecting eight skaters overall and risking losing a Patric Hornqvist or Carl Hagelin, then Pouliot appears to be the odd-man-out on the back end. Kris Letang, Olli Maatta, and Brian Dumoulin are the obvious choices to be protected by the Penguins. With good defensive depth on the roster and even more NHL experience down at the AHL level, Pittsburgh is not desperate for blue line help right now. While that may change down the line with injuries, the Penguins may still need to look at trading Pouliot while they can. If he fails to move the young defenseman, GM Jim Rutherford will likely lose him for nothing to the Las Vegas Golden Knights, who will certainly be intrigued by a recent top ten pick. On the other hand, if Pouliot continues to play this poorly, the Penguins may not lose him after all.
  • Meanwhile, Jarry will get his first real NHL experience with Murray out of the lineup. Although Jarry has spent time on the Pittsburgh roster both this season and last, he has yet to make his debut. The Penguins claimed Mike Condon off of waivers earlier this season when Murray was first injured, and he performed well as the backup to Fleury before being traded to the Ottawa Senators. With no such option this time around, expect Jarry to get his first start in the next week or two in relief of Fleury, who has adjusted to part-time work in 2016-17. A 2013 second-round pick of the Penguins, Jarry was a standout prospect from the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings and has played well in his first two pro seasons with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
