Snapshots: Blues, Gritsyuk, Watson

The St. Louis Blues have filled out the rest of next season’s coaching staff, hiring Mike Weber as an assistant coach and Michael Babcock as a skills coach today. Late last week, we covered how the Blues were looking to replace their two coaching vacancies soon, in which the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Matthew DeFranks hinted at the possibility of a skills coach hire.

Weber, 35, played 351 NHL games across an eight-season career with the Buffalo Sabres and Washington Capitals. He’d since returned to the Sabres organization, spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach with the AHL’s Rochester Americans. Michael Babcock is the son of soon-to-be Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Mike Babcock, and despite being just 28 years old, this isn’t his first NHL job. He spent the 2022-23 campaign with the Ottawa Senators, doing work with pre-scouting and on-ice skill development, the Blues said.

The two incoming hires replace Mike Van Ryn and Craig MacTavish on the Blues bench, who the team let go of two months ago to the day.

  • New Jersey Devils winger prospect Arseni Gritsyuk won’t be heading to North America until 2025, his agent told NJ.com’s Ryan Novozinsky. Selected in the fifth round of the 2019 NHL Draft, Gritsyuk, now 22, broke out for 15 goals and 40 points in 66 KHL games this season with Avangard Omsk. The 5-foot-11, 192-pound Russian’s speed is his defining factor, and the Devils certainly hope that production transfers over in two seasons when Gritsyuk joins the team.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have named Dan Watson the head coach of their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, the team said today. Watson had spent the past six years in the organization as the head coach of their ECHL affiliate, the Toledo Walleye, so he’ll have familiarity with a spattering of players already on the Griffins’ roster. Before that, he was an associate coach in Toledo alongside then-head coach Derek Lalonde, now behind Detroit’s NHL bench.

St. Louis Blues Make Changes To Coaching Staff

St. Louis Blues assistant coaches Craig MacTavish and Mike Van Ryn will not be returning to the team for the 2023-24 season, the Blues said in a release Friday. Head coach Craig Berube’s position has not been affected.

Assistant coach Steve Ott and goaltending coach David Alexander will remain on the team’s coaching staff, along with video coach Darryl Seward and video coordinator Elliott Mondou.

MacTavish had joined the Blues coaching staff for the 2022-23 season. Before that, he had finished a 17-year playing career with the Blues in 1997 before going on to become an assistant coach with the New York Rangers and head coach of the Edmonton Oilers between 2000 and 2009.

Van Ryn, on the other hand, had spent five seasons as an assistant coach with the Blues after the team hired him in May 2018. He played for the Blues for the first three of his eight seasons as a defenseman in the NHL. He then coached for eight years between the OHL and AHL before joining the Blues ahead of their Stanley Cup-winning season in 2018-19.

The Blues finished their disappointing 2022-23 season with a record of 37-38-7 and 81 points, missing the playoffs for the second time since 2012.

It remains to be seen who will fill the vacant positions left by MacTavish and Van Ryn. With the team looking to retool quickly in the offseason after selling off major assets at the trade deadline, the coaching staff will play a crucial role in ensuring the Blues can be competitive next season.

Blues Hire Craig MacTavish

The Blues have made an addition to their coaching staff as the team announced that they’ve hired long-time NHL coach and executive Craig MacTavish as an assistant coach on Craig Berube’s staff.  GM Doug Armstrong released the following statement about the hire:

Craig has spent 30 years in our League, serving as a player, coach and general manager. He played in over 1,000 games, has coached in almost 700 and is a four-time Stanley Cup Champion. We are excited to add his experience to our staff.

MacTavish takes the place of Jim Montgomery behind the bench in St. Louis after it was made official earlier today that Montgomery has joined the Bruins as their new head coach.

This will be the 63-year-old’s second stint with the Blues having finished his playing career with St. Louis, playing for them in 1995-96 and 1996-97.  While MacTavish has extensive experience as an NHL coach (including eight years as the head coach in Edmonton), he hasn’t worked behind an NHL bench since covering as Edmonton’s interim coach for five games back in the 2014-15 campaign.  Since then, MacTavish’s only coaching experience came in the KHL with Yaroslavl where he didn’t make it through the season.  MacTavish joins Mike Van Ryn and Steve Ott as assistants on Berube’s staff.

Craig MacTavish Hired In Switzerland

After trying and failing as a head coach in the KHL, Craig MacTavish is trying out a new league. The long-time Edmonton Oiler has been hired by Lausanne HC of the Swiss NLA to serve as head coach for the rest of the year.

MacTavish started the year as the head coach of Yaroslavl in the KHL, but was fired after just eight games. He then took over coaching duties for the Canadian Spengler Cup team, which won the annual tournament, and will now head to Switzerland to continue what has been an interesting calendar year.

Ousted from the Oilers after the team went in a different direction with Ken Holland taking over, it ended a long relationship that saw MacTavish serve as head coach, general manager and senior vice president of hockey operations at various times. We’ll now have to wait and see if he can catch on in Switzerland.

If the club name rings a bell for Philadelphia Flyers fans, it should. Before the 2019-20 season the Flyers took on Lausanne in an exhibition game, which the Swiss club won 4-3.

Craig MacTavish’s tenure with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the KHL was certainly short-lived as he was let go after eight games with the team.  However, he’ll be back behind the bench next month as TSN’s Darren Dreger reports (Twitter link) that he will be Canada’s head coach at next month’s Spengler Cup.  The position had initially been offered to Wayne Gretzky but was declined.  Among those that are expected to be named to MacTavish’s staff is Misha Donskov, the Director of Hockey Operations for the Golden Knights.

  • While Troy Brouwer has been with the Blues for more than a week and recently signed a one-year deal, he hasn’t been given clearance to play just yet. Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that the winger is still awaiting his work visa and he can’t suit up until he gets that.  Brouwer was expected to play on Thursday and is hopeful that the issue will be resolved in time for their next game on Saturday.
  • Kings defenseman Derek Forbort recently took part in a full skate with AHL Ontario, mentions Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider. He has missed the entire season as he continues to work his way back from a back injury.  It’s a contract year for the 27-year-old who will enter unrestricted free agency for the first time in July so getting back is of particular importance for him.  As for Los Angeles, if Forbort returns to form, he could be one of the more intriguing trade candidates closer to the trade deadline.
  • It appears the Avalanche are getting close to getting at least one of their top forwards back. Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that winger Mikko Rantanen could rejoin the team soon as he continues to ramp up his skating while working his way back from a lower-body injury.  The news isn’t as good for Gabriel Landeskog though.  He has yet to start skating after suffering a foot injury last month and will be going to be re-evaluated later this week.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Sidney Crosby are weighing a decision of whether or not the superstar should get surgery to fix a sport hernia, according to Rob Rossi of The Athletic. Crosby has dealing with it since training camp and aggravated it on Saturday night.

Surgery would take the Penguins’ captain out for at least a month, but that’s a tough proposition given the injuries that the team has already fought through to even keep their head above water. Without Crosby, Pittsburgh certainly wouldn’t have a 10-6-2 through the first part of the season.

  • Wayne Gretzky was offered the head coaching position for Canada at the upcoming Spengler Cup, but has turned it down according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. Team Canada, led by Sean Burke, will look at other options that include Craig MacTavish according to Darren Dreger of TSN.
  • Ilya Kovalchuk was at Los Angeles Kings practice today but things remain “fluid” as several reporters have termed the situation. The Kings have looked at trading him in the past, as Jon Rosen points out, but there are several complications including his bonus money due on December 15th.

Craig MacTavish Fired In KHL

After just eight games as the head coach of Yaroslavl Lokomotiv in the KHL, Craig MacTavish has been fired. The former Edmonton Oilers executive left the NHL to pursue a new opportunity overseas this year, but will be looking for a new job after just a few games. MacTavish ends his KHL career with a 3-5 record.

When Ken Holland was brought in to steer the ship in Edmonton earlier this offseason, MacTavish was one of the first of the old front office to go. After two decades with the organization serving at various times as assistant coach, head coach, general manager and senior vice president of hockey operations, much of the good will he built as a player had gone among Edmonton fans. MacTavish of course was a three-time Stanley Cup winner with the team in the late-80s.

With such an extensive resume it seems likely that MacTavish will land on his feet somewhere, though he may not be given the kind of power he had for years in Edmonton. It is unfortunate that his stint in Russia didn’t work out, but there have been many other coaches chewed up by the KHL system before and he won’t be the last.

Reporters including Michael Chambers of the Denver Post caught up with Colorado Avalanche GM Joe Sakic today at his celebrity golf tournament, and asked him about the ongoing contract negotiations with Mikko Rantanen. There were recently reports that things had barely started between the two sides, but Sakic confirmed he had personally agreed with Rantanen that a long-term deal is the way to go.

With both sides on the same page regarding term, there is one less thing to worry about in negotiations. Obviously salary is now the biggest question and you have to wonder if Rantanen’s side (and maybe the Avalanche too) want to wait and see where some of the other high-priced restricted free agents come in. At the very least, the fact that Rantanen wants to sign long-term in Colorado is a positive sign and one that should excite Avalanche fans.

  • Former NHL defenseman Denis Grebeshkov will join his old coach behind the bench in the KHL this season. He has been hired as an assistant to Craig MacTavish, who was the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers when the Russian experienced the most NHL success. Originally selected 18th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 2002, the left-handed defenseman played several seasons for Edmonton and recorded 39 points in 2008-09. MacTavish left the Oilers this offseason to pursue an opportunity coaching Yaroslavl in the KHL.
  • The Kings have confirmed to Jon Rosen that prospect Johan Sodergran will play in North America for the 2019-20 season, coming over from the SHL. Sodergran signed his entry-level contract in June after the Kings selected him in the sixth round in 2018 and comes with a fair amount of buzz after a successful season with Linkoping HC. Though he finished the year with just 13 points in 42 games, competing at all in that league at such a young age is an impressive feat. Sodergran also suited up for Sweden at the World Juniors last year and is expected to play for the Ontario Reign of the AHL despite not turning 20 until November.

Ty Rattie Signs In KHL

After his first season playing more than half the year in the NHL, Ty Rattie is saying farewell to North America. The free agent forward has signed a one-year deal with Lokomotiv in the KHL according to Igor Eronko of Sport-Express, reuniting him with former Edmonton Oilers executive Craig MacTavish, who is now the head coach there. Rattie was not issued a qualifying offer by the Oilers last month, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Rattie, 26, played 50 games last season for the Oilers but recorded just 11 points, never establishing himself as a real offensive presence despite plenty of opportunity. Originally selected 32nd-overall in 2011, he bounced up and down in the St. Louis Blues organization for years before a short stint in Carolina and the last two seasons with Edmonton. In 99 career NHL games he has 30 points, but can’t seem to carve out a good number of minutes anywhere he goes.

A two-time 100-point player in the WHL, Rattie has found plenty of success in the AHL as well. He’ll head overseas to a team with a familiar face behind the bench to try and prove he can contribute with a bigger role, but it’s going to be tough to convince NHL front offices of his worth at this point.

After a forgettable performance in their first home Stanley Cup Finals game since 1970 on Saturday, the St. Louis Blues might get back a key player for Monday’s Game Four. Defenseman Vince Dunn was seen as a full participant in their optional practice on Sunday, according to NHL.com’s Lou Korac. While he’s still day-to-day, it’s extremely possible he may be ready to go on Monday.

The injury news may not be as promising for forward Robert Thomas, who has now missed two games with an undisclosed injury, although it is now believed it’s a wrist injury that the 19-year-old has suffered. Thomas practiced at Sunday’s optional skate, but NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti reports that he didn’t handle any pucks and was following Robby Fabbri in drills, suggesting he’s not ready to return to the lineup.

  • With continued rumors surrounding Toronto Maple Leafs forward Patrick Marleau and his interest in moving to a west coast team, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the Maple Leafs have already had discussions with the Arizona Coyotes, one of the three teams that Marleau is reportedly interested in playing for next season. LeBrun reports that Arizona didn’t show significant interest and he senses that the Coyotes would require a premium prospect sent along with Marleau if the team is willing to take Marleau’s contract off of Toronto’s hands.
  • After walking away in December from millions of dollars, former Buffalo Sabres forward Patrik Berglund said on the Hockey Sense Podcast with Andy Strickland that he doesn’t regret leaving the Sabres and now that he’s had a chance to recuperate, intends to return to the ice next season. Berglund, who would have had three years remaining on the contract he signed back in 2017, choose not to report to the team in December and was suspended and then given his unconditional release and had his contract terminated. “I’m doing really well, back home in Sweden and just kind of hanging out right now, getting back to work through working out and doing all that and I’m looking forward to playing hockey next year somewhere, so it’s all good,” Berglund said. No word on whether he intends to return to the NHL or play overseas.
  • The Edmonton Journal’s Kurt Leavins writes that while there has been no official word, it looks like Edmonton Oilers former interim general manager Keith Gretzky is likely to stay within the organization and could fill a dual role. He is expected to return to his old role of assistant general manager with an emphasis on the amateur side, while also having a bigger role with Edmonton’s AHL franchise, the Bakersfield Condors, which was the same role that Craig MacTavish held before he left the organization.
  • In agent news, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the player agency Quartexx is merging with Darren Ferris and DHG Sports Agency to form an even bigger agency. Among the players that DHG brings over to Quartexx are Toronto’s Mitch Marner, New Jersey’s Taylor Hall, and Detroit’s Andreas Athanasiou and Filip Zadina. Friedman adds that the merger shouldn’t have any effect on any negotiations.
