Predators Place Cole Smith On Injured Reserve

November 7, 2025 at 3:20 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Predators announced they’ve placed winger Cole Smith on injured reserve. The placement is retroactive to Nov. 1, his most recent appearance.

Smith left that night’s game against the Flames with an upper-body injury early and didn’t return. The next day, the team announced he’d be out for three to six weeks. That renders the minimum absence of the IR placement ineffective, as he’s technically eligible to return on Nov. 10 against the Rangers but won’t be available until later in the month at the earliest.

As such, today’s move has less to do with Smith’s injury and is more about opening up a roster spot. After recalling Zachary L’Heureux from AHL Milwaukee earlier in the week, the Preds didn’t have an open one. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Nashville use Smith’s spot to recall a defenseman. Adam Wilsby has missed the last five games due to a lower-body injury and is close to returning, according to Alex Daugherty of The Tennessean. However, with Wilsby still on the active roster and unavailable, the Predators don’t have an extra rearguard available.

Before his injury, Smith was having a good start in a fourth-line role alongside Michael McCarron and Ozzy Wiesblatt. The 30-year-old had three goals through 13 games while averaging 13:26 of ice time per game, including a spot on their top penalty killing unit. Despite a -2 rating, his underlying numbers with McCarron and Wiesblatt at 5-on-5 were excellent. The trio has controlled 64.3% of expected goals and 57.6% of shot attempts, which are spectacular numbers given their role as defensive specialists.

Cole Smith Out Three-To-Six Weeks With Upper-Body Injury

November 2, 2025 at 10:35 am CDT | by Ethan Hetu Leave a Comment

The Nashville Predators announced today that forward Cole Smith has suffered an upper-body injury and will be out with a three-to-six week recovery timeline. The Predators also announced that captain Roman Josi, who remains out on a week-to-week timeline with his own upper-body injury, has been placed on injured reserve.

Smith was limited to just 1:55 time-on-ice during the Predators’ victory over the Calgary Flames yesterday, leaving the game after he was on the receiving end of a hit from Flames grinder Ryan Lomberg. It’s an unfortunate development for Smith, who had started off the season well, scoring three goals in 13 games. Smith scored just four goals in all of 2024-25.

The 30-year-old winger is a player who has worked his way into a steady fourth-line NHL job as an undrafted former college free agent. While he’s never been much of an offensive producer, Smith brings valuable physicality and penalty-killing ability to the table. Smith has played a role Nashville’s the penalty kill dating back to 2022-23, his first full-time NHL campaign, and he took on a more central role there after the departures of Tanner Jeannot and later Yakov Trenin. Smith led all Predators forwards in short-handed ice time each of the last two seasons, and ranks second behind Michael McCarron through 13 games this season.

As a result, the loss of Smith for the next few weeks will be felt most prominently on the Predators’ penalty kill. Despite a poor all-around season, Nashville’s shorthanded operation ranked as the seventh-best in the NHL in 2024-25 and ranks sixth so far this season. This injury therefore costs one of the league’s top penalty kills one of its most important contributors.

Veteran Ryan O’Reilly ranks fifth among Predators forwards in short-handed ice time per game this season and could end up seeing his usage on that unit rise as a result of Smith’s injury. It’s also possible that a younger player such as Fedor Svechkov or Ozzy Wiesblatt, who have each seen sporadic use on the penalty kill, could get a longer look on the unit in Smith’s absence.

Looking at yesterday’s game as a clue, Wiesblatt took Smith’s spot alongside McCarron on the Predators’ top shorthanded unit after Smith left the game. He finished with just over two minutes of ice time on the penalty kill. That’s the most shorthanded ice time he’s played in a single NHL game so far in his young career, and it could indicate that Wiesblatt will get a chance to play that role moving forward while Smith recovers.

Predators Activate Cole Smith Off IR

January 21, 2025 at 5:30 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley Leave a Comment

The Nashville Predators have activated centerman Cole Smith off of injured reserve, per Nick Kieser of Nashville’s 102.5 The Game. Smith has missed the team’s last 11 games with a lower-body injury suffered in the team’s December 21st game against Los Angeles. He appeared to be laboring through pain but managed to play through the final seconds of regulation time in that matchup – before not skating for the team’s eventual overtime win. Smith was placed on injured reserve three days later, with a prognosis of four to six weeks. He returns right on time with this activation – exactly one month later.

Like many of his teammates, Smith has been ice-cold this season. He appeared in all 34 of Nashville’s games prior to his injury, routinely serving as the team’s third-line center. But a routine role hasn’t meant routine production – with Smith posting just five points, 20 penalty minutes, and a -9 on the year. That includes no scoring, and just one fighting major, through his last eight games. Smith won out a third-line role last season with responsible and often consistent hockey. He played in 80 games and posted 23 points – the third-most of any Predators forward to average below 14 minutes of ice time. Smith was also the most utilized forward on Nashville’s penalty kill during the 2023-24 campaign, recording 168 minutes of shorthanded ice time. He’s returned to that high-trust role this season and should once again stand as one of the team’s go-to defensive forwards now that he’s back from injury.

Predators Place Cole Smith On IR

December 23, 2024 at 7:30 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski Leave a Comment

The Nashville Predators have placed forward Cole Smith on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. The 29-year-old is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks. Although no specifics about his injury were given, it is likely related to the hard shot he took off the ankle in Saturday night’s contest against the Los Angeles Kings.

Smith is in his third full NHL season with Nashville after a four-year NCAA career and a couple of seasons in the AHL. The native of Brainerd, Minnesota has never been a prolific scorer but has been difficult to play against in his brief NHL career, playing the role of a disruptive forechecker as well as displaying a keen ability to get to the front of the net. He has also been a good penalty killer, utilizing his 6’3” frame to force turnovers.

Smith had a career year last season, tallying nine goals and 14 assists in 80 games, but has seen his offensive output dry up this year with just two goals and three assists in 34 games. Although that is a dramatic drop-off in production, it is likely due to his deployment which has seen him start just 20.7% of his even-strength shifts in the offensive zone compared to 35.1% last season.

Deployment aside, Smith has also seen his PDO (shooting percentage + save percentage) drop a full five points and his CF% has also dipped from 48% down to 45.8%.

Snapshots: Smith, Schenn, Second Round, DiPietro

May 3, 2024 at 8:39 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley 1 Comment

Forward Cole Smith was held out of Friday night’s Game 6 lineup due to a lower-body injury, per the team (Twitter link). Smith was replaced by Juuso Parssinen making his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut. Parssinen took on a larger role than Smith’s received, stepping into the team’s second line and bumping Mark Jankowski down the lineup. Only three Predators forwards, including Smith, have failed to record at least one point through their first five playoff games. Parssinen will need to quickly join that list, with Nashville down 3-2 in the series.

The Predators also welcomed Luke Schenn back to the lineup, after he missed Game 5 with illness, shares The Athletic’s Thomas Drance (Twitter link). Schenn’s absence made way for Tyson Barrie to return to the lineup. Barrie brought speed and tempo to the lineup, even recording an assist in Nashville’s eventual 2-1 win. But with elimination so close, the Predators opted for the more physical and defensive presence of Schenn.

Other notes from around the league:

  • The NHL has announced the start times for the Second Round’s Eastern Conference matchups. The round will begin with Game 1 between the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers on Sunday, while the Florida Panthers will take on the winner of Toronto versus Boston on Monday. Start times for each of these games haven’t yet been announced. This schedule marks a quick turnaround for Boston or Toronto, while each of Carolina, New York, and Florida will have at least five days off.
  • The Boston Bruins have returned goaltender Michael DiPietro to the minor leagues, per NHL.com’s Mark Divver (Twitter link). DiPietro has served as Boston’s emergency third-string goalie for a handful of playoff games, though he’s yet to play his first game as a Boston Bruin. He instead spent all season with the AHL’s Providence Bruins, where he recorded 18 wins and a .918 save percentage in 30 appearances. He’ll now return to a prime role for Providence, as they prepare to take on one of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Charlotte, or Hartford in the Atlantic Division’s Semifinals.

Predators Sign Cole Smith To Extension

January 24, 2024 at 10:21 am CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

The Predators signed forward Cole Smith to a two-year, $2MM ($1MM AAV) contract extension on Wednesday, per a team announcement. The deal begins next season and keeps Smith under contract through 2026.

Smith, 28, is playing the 2023-24 season on a one-year, league-minimum contract that was set to make him a UFA this summer. This is his first multi-year contract with Nashville after signing four consecutive one-year deals since turning pro in 2020.

The Predators’ undrafted pickup out of the University of North Dakota is transforming into a solid bottom-six presence, pacing himself for career highs with five goals and 16 points in 46 games while averaging a career-high 13:30 per game. His individual possession numbers are underwhelming (a 47.2% Corsi share at even strength), though, and his line with Colton Sissons and Yakov Trenin is near the bottom of the league in terms of generating quality scoring chances, per MoneyPuck.

That being said, Smith’s $1MM cap hit is fully buriable in the minors and would not count against the team’s salary cap if they opted to waive him. If he can round out his game, it’s a solid bet on the part of Predators GM Barry Trotz to get a 25-to-35-point scorer locked in at an affordable rate for the next pair of seasons.

Since signing with the Predators in 2020, Smith has nine goals, 24 assists, 33 points, and averages 12:43 per game through 124 contests. The extension will make him a UFA for the second time in his career at age 30 in 2026.
