Snapshots: Hofer, Boeser, Puljujarvi, Seney

Some have speculated that Blues goaltender Joel Hofer could be an offer sheet candidate this summer.  Speaking with reporters today including Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic (subscription link), GM Doug Armstrong tried his best to dissuade any potential suitors away:

We’ve taken the Boston-Detroit approach last year when they had RFAs. They made sure they left enough cap space that any offer could be matched. I’m very comfortable we can match any offer if we choose to match it. It won’t be we didn’t match it because we couldn’t afford it. It will be we didn’t match it because we thought the value we were getting back was better, and that value would have to start with a first-round pick or else we’ll just match it.

I’m not saying we wouldn’t match it with a first either, but I guess this is my shot across the bow. You can go after him. You’re not going to get him.

Hofer put up a 2.65 GAA and a .909 SV% in 65 games while playing on his two-year bridge contract, putting him in line for a significant raise on the league-minimum salary of $775K that he was making during that time.  It wouldn’t be surprising to see a short-term deal come in around $3MM, especially since he’s arbitration-eligible this summer.  Hofer could be a candidate for a second bridge contract as he’s still three years away from UFA eligibility while lining up the expiration of his deal at the same time that Blues starter Jordan Binnington’s contract will be up.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • The Senators are expected to show interest in pending UFA winger Brock Boeser if he gets to the open market, reports Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch. Ottawa was 30th in the NHL in goals scored at five-on-five and Boeser, who has notched roughly 26 goals per year over the last five seasons, would certainly help in that regard.  However, affording him could be a challenge.  The Sens have around $10.75MM in cap space, per PuckPedia, but have made it known that they don’t plan to be a cap-spending team in 2025-26.  Considering that Boeser could command more than $8MM per season in free agency, he might be out of their price range unless they can open up money elsewhere first.
  • While Jesse Puljujarvi was one of only a few players still playing in the Calder Cup Finals (until recently when Abbotsford won the series in six), it appears he’s already looking ahead to his next deal. Blick, a Swiss newspaper, reports that the 27-year-old is likely to sign in the Swiss NL next season, likely with HC Lugano.  Puljujarvi started the year with Pittsburgh, getting into 26 games but asked for his contract to be terminated after he cleared waivers and was sent to the minors in February.  He quickly signed with Florida’s AHL team and was eventually converted to an NHL contract, getting into five games with the Panthers.  But while Puljujarvi has nearly 400 games at the top level under his belt, he has been more of an NHL-AHL ‘tweener’ lately so heading overseas where he can play a bigger role might make the most sense for him.
  • Pending Blackhawks UFA winger Brett Seney has decided not to test the open market after all and will remain with the organization. But after playing on an NHL deal in recent years, that won’t be the case anymore as their affiliate, AHL Rockford, announced that they’ve signed the 29-year-old to a two-year contract.  Seney has 66 career NHL appearances under his belt, including four in 2023-24, but spent all of this season in the minors where he notched 10 goals and 19 assists in 58 games.

Blackhawks Assign Brett Seney To Canadian National Team

According to the AHL transactions page, the Chicago Blackhawks have reassigned Brett Seney, the captain of their AHL affiliate, to the Canadian National Team for the upcoming Spengler Cup. It will be the first time Seney has suited up for Team Canada in international play throughout his professional career.

Seney is in his eighth professional season and third with the Blackhawks organization. The New Jersey Devils drafted him with the 157th overall pick of the 2015 NHL Draft. He made his professional debut with the team’s AHL affiliate, the Binghampton Devils, toward the end of the 2017-18 season.

Before turning to the professional ranks, Seney amassed a solid career with the NCAA’s Merrimack College scoring 42 goals and 115 points in 139 games. That level of offensive consistency has translated well to the AHL where Seney has collected 97 goals and 274 points in 345 games.

Unfortunately for Seney, his talent hasn’t translated well to the NHL. He scored five goals and 13 points in 51 games for the Devils in his rookie campaign during the 2018-19 season while averaging 10:20 of ice time per game. He saw his role significantly reduced during the Covid-shortened 2019-20 season as Seney only suited up in two games for the rebuilding New Jersey franchise.

He spent one more year in the Devils organization before signing a one-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2021. Seney led the team’s AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies in scoring that year leading to three straight one-year contracts with the Blackhawks.

Blackhawks Sign Brett Seney To Two-Way Extension

The Blackhawks are bringing depth forward Brett Seney back next season on a two-way extension, the team announced Monday. The deal carries the league-minimum salary of $775K at the NHL level, while his AHL salary will be $500K with a $525K guarantee, PuckPedia reports.

Seney, 28, signs his third straight one-year deal with Chicago. He first joined the organization ahead of the 2022-23 season, inking a two-way deal with a $475K guarantee after posting a career-high 59 points in 62 games with AHL Toronto the year prior.

The diminutive yet versatile forward has just one goal in 11 NHL games with Chicago over the past two years but has remained exceptional in the minors. In 127 games with AHL Rockford, he’s posted 46 goals and 117 points and led the club in scoring this season while serving as an alternate captain.

He’ll remain a short-term call-up option if injuries strike, but his value to the organization is felt much more as a capable offensive threat to play with their younger, developing talents in Rockford. He was slated to become a UFA this summer after completing a two-way extension with a $500K guarantee that he signed in March of last year.

Seney will again be eligible for unrestricted free agency when his new extension expires in 2025. After signing as an undrafted free agent with the Devils in 2018, the 5’9″ forward has accumulated six goals, 14 points and a -17 rating in 66 appearances with Chicago, New Jersey and Toronto.

Blackhawks Assign Brett Seney To Rockford

Charlie Roumeliotis of NBC Sports Chicago is reporting that the Chicago Blackhawks have sent forward Brett Seney back to the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. Seney has been with the Blackhawks since January 1st and played four games during his NHL recall. Seney struggled during that time tallying no points in the four games as the club spent more of the time being dramatically out-chanced while his line was on the ice.

The 27-year-old is in his second season with the Blackhawks organization after he was originally signed as a free agent back in July of 2022. Last year he had a much better NHL audition in Chicago, dressing in seven games and registering one assist. In 66 NHL games spread across five seasons, Seney has six goals and eight assists and has played for three different organizations.

The London, Ontario native stands just 5-9 and only weighs 156 pounds. He seemed to have a hard time staying strong on the puck during his recall, however in the AHL he has been a consistent offensive threat for the past three seasons including this year where he has eight goals and 13 assists in 29 games.

With so many injuries throughout the Blackhawks forward ranks, it does seem likely that Seney will receive another recall before the end of the year. Particularly if he can continue his strong play in the AHL.

Blackhawks Recall Brett Seney, Place Tyler Johnson On IR

The Blackhawks recalled forward Brett Seney from the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs on Monday, according to a team announcement. In a corresponding transaction, the team moved veteran Tyler Johnson to injured reserve.

This is the first recall of the season for the 27-year-old Seney. The 5-foot-9 natural center has been a bona fide top-six scorer in the minors since turning pro in 2018, but has never been able to truly lock down a full-time NHL role.

After spending the first five seasons of his pro career with the Devils and Maple Leafs, Seney joined the Blackhawks on a one-year, two-way deal with a salary guarantee of $475K prior to last season. He responded with a career-high 23 goals and 31 assists for 54 points in 59 games with AHL Rockford, which resulted in two call-ups in the second half of the season. Skating in seven NHL games with Chicago last year, his most since logging 51 in his rookie season with the Devils in 2018-19, Seney recorded a goal and a -2 rating while averaging 13:08 per game.

In late March, Seney’s strong AHL production earned him a one-year extension with a small pay bump, increasing his salary guarantee to $500K for 2023-24. He’s responded with a slower start in Rockford after clearing waivers during training camp, posting eight goals and 21 points in 29 games, good enough for second in points behind Dave Gust on the struggling IceHogs. However, his -17 rating is the worst on the team, and he’s the only player with more than one point on the season with a rating worse than -10.

Still, he’s one of the better options left in the Blackhawks system to provide a punch to an already-weak offense that’s been destroyed by injuries. Major offseason acquisition Taylor Hall remains out for the season with a knee injury, while Joey Anderson, Andreas Athanasiou and Taylor Raddysh are all also on injured reserve.

Johnson, 33, now becomes the fifth Blackhawks forward on IR. He sustained a right foot injury in yesterday’s game against the Stars, and there is no timeline for his return. The aging Johnson had seen top-six minutes on multiple occasions this season thanks to the team’s rash of injuries and has nine goals and 13 points in 35 games, including a two-goal effort against Dallas last Friday.

He will miss at least the next seven days due to his IR placement, during which period the Blackhawks have four games. He’ll be eligible to return on January 9 against the Oilers.

Chicago Blackhawks Extend Brett Seney

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed forward Brett Seney to a one-year, two-way contract extension, per a team tweet Wednesday.

Seney’s two-way deal will pay him the league-minimum $775,000 at the NHL level. The team did not disclose his AHL salary.

Seney, 27, was acquired by the Blackhawks when free agency opened last July. He’s appeared in seven games for Chicago this season, recording one goal.

The 5-foot-9, 157-pound forward has played in 62 career NHL games, registering six goals and eight assists. He’s a much more seasoned veteran in the AHL, where he’s recorded 188 points in 241 games across six seasons. He sits second in scoring on the Rockford IceHogs this season with 48 points in 50 games.

Born in London, Ontario, Seney is a skilled puck handler who’s had back-to-back elite seasons in the minors after a rough COVID-laced 2020-21 season. While the rebuilding Blackhawks will likely give most of their roster spots to younger talent next season for development purposes, Seney could easily challenge for a roster spot and immediately become one of the more seasoned pros among Chicago’s forward core. He will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024 upon the expiration of his contract extension.
