Blackhawks Assign Brett Seney To Canadian National Team

According to the AHL transactions page, the Chicago Blackhawks have reassigned Brett Seney, the captain of their AHL affiliate, to the Canadian National Team for the upcoming Spengler Cup. It will be the first time Seney has suited up for Team Canada in international play throughout his professional career.

Seney is in his eighth professional season and third with the Blackhawks organization. The New Jersey Devils drafted him with the 157th overall pick of the 2015 NHL Draft. He made his professional debut with the team’s AHL affiliate, the Binghampton Devils, toward the end of the 2017-18 season.

Before turning to the professional ranks, Seney amassed a solid career with the NCAA’s Merrimack College scoring 42 goals and 115 points in 139 games. That level of offensive consistency has translated well to the AHL where Seney has collected 97 goals and 274 points in 345 games.

Unfortunately for Seney, his talent hasn’t translated well to the NHL. He scored five goals and 13 points in 51 games for the Devils in his rookie campaign during the 2018-19 season while averaging 10:20 of ice time per game. He saw his role significantly reduced during the Covid-shortened 2019-20 season as Seney only suited up in two games for the rebuilding New Jersey franchise.

He spent one more year in the Devils organization before signing a one-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2021. Seney led the team’s AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies in scoring that year leading to three straight one-year contracts with the Blackhawks.

New Jersey Devils Reassign Colton White

Colton White’s time with the New Jersey Devils is on pause after 10 days on the active roster. The organization announced the reassignment of White to their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets. New Jersey also added that White will join Team Canada for the upcoming Spengler Cup instead of joining the Comets roster.

The 2024-25 season is his eighth professional season and his sixth with the Devils organization. New Jersey drafted White with the 97th overall pick of the 2015 NHL Draft and he’s been with the organization since aside from two years with the Anaheim Ducks organization.

Most of White’s value centers around his physicality. He’s tallied 10 assists in 84 games at the NHL level since the 2018-19 season with 57 blocked shots and 65 hits. He’s understandably scored more at the AHL level with 17 goals and 78 points in 274 games but has a dismal -69 rating throughout his career.

His inclusion on Team Canada’s roster for this year’s Spengler Cup will be the first international competition of White’s career. He’ll assist the Canadians in pursuing their first Spengler Cup victory since the 2019 tournament. The tournament will take place from December 26th to December 31st in Davos, Switzerland.

The Devils will likely make a corresponding roster move on defense after the Christmas break. They have one more game tomorrow night against the New York Rangers but will want more than six healthy defensemen on the active roster by the weekend.

The hockey world is fulling pulling into the second half of the 2023-24 season, with the 100th anniversary of the Spengler Cup being awarded to the tourney’s host team, HC Davos, and the semi-finals of the World Juniors Championship set to begin soon. This means plenty of exciting time for international hockey, as well as plenty of roster moves, as players return from their national team back to their league play. As always, we’ll cover notable transactions here.

  • Philadelphia Flyers prospect Alexis Gendron has seen his QMJHL rights traded from the Gatineau Olympiques to the Drummondville Voltigeurs, with Gatineau receiving three draft picks in return. This must have been what Philadelphia wanted to see, as they’ve assigned Gendron back to the QMJHL for the rest of the season. The 20-year-old, former seventh-round draft pick was previously playing in his first professional season, recording five goals and seven points in 17 AHL games. Gendron has previously played four seasons in the QMJHL – including three with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada – totaling 141 points in 160 games in the league.
  • Team Canada’s Spengler Cup team has returned a quartet of players to their AHL squad. This includes the Laval Rockets’ Nicolas Beaudin, the Belleville Senators’ Dillon Heatherington, the Manitoba Moose’s Thomas Milic, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins’ Ty Smith. Milic appeared in one game between the pipes for Team Canada, while Smith led the team’s defensemen with five points. Heatherington and Beaudin only combined for one assist through the tournament’s four games.

Minor Transactions: Spengler Cup Edition

The World Junior Hockey Championship isn’t the only tournament that takes place at this time of year.  The Spengler Cup, the oldest invitational hockey tournament in the world, also gets underway on December 26th, running through the 31st.  While most of the participants are club teams across various international leagues, Canada gets to send a team as well.  Most of their players also play overseas but a handful of NHL teams have loaned players out for this event.  We’ve already covered Aaron Dell (Carolina) and Nicolas Beaudin (Montreal) but here are the other NHL-affiliated players who have been loaned; the full roster (which features several former NHL players) can be found here.

  • Penguins defenseman Ty Smith has been loaned by AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. It has been a disappointing year for the 23-year-old in the sense that he passed through waivers unclaimed.  However, he has been quite productive in the minors so far, collecting 22 points in 27 games.
  • The Senators have loaned out blueliner Dillon Heatherington from AHL Belleville. The 28-year-old has played in 24 games so far in the minors, picking up two goals and two assists.  Heatherington, a pending unrestricted free agent, got into three games with Ottawa last season.
  • Jets goalie Thomas Milic has been added to the roster from ECHL Norfolk. The first-year pro had a standout performance at the World Juniors and with WHL Seattle last season, resulting in him being drafted in his final year of eligibility.  While he has four games with AHL Manitoba this season, he has spent most of the year with the Admirals, posting a 2.44 GAA and .910 SV% in 14 games.
  • While not a direct loan from an NHL affiliate, the Flyers will also have a prospect in this event as forward Massimo Rizzo will be suiting up. The 22-year-old is in his junior year at the University of Denver and leads all Division I players with 31 points in 18 games.  He’s the only NCAA player suiting up for Canada in the event.

Diamond Sports Group has reached a deal with the 11 NHL teams it has regional broadcast rights for to televise their games through the end of this season, sports business reporter Daniel Kaplan reports (Twitter link).  With that agreement being made through bankruptcy court, it stands to reason that those affected will not be receiving the full value of their contracts, some of which lasted until 2030.  After this season, the broadcast rights for those teams will revert to the league with future plans uncertain at this point.  However, Amazon has held discussions with some MLB teams that are in similar situations (regional rights with Diamond for this season and reverting to the league after) so it’s possible that they could look to hold talks about NHL rights as well.  Detroit, Columbus, St. Louis, Anaheim, Carolina, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay, Florida, Nashville, Dallas, and Minnesota are the teams that will be impacted by this news.

  • After missing last night’s game, Sharks defensemen Jan Rutta (illness) and Calen Addison (lower-body injury) were both feeling better today and could suit up Thursday versus Arizona, relays Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now (Twitter link). Rutta has five assists and 43 blocked shots in 26 games so far this season, his first with San Jose after being acquired from Pittsburgh.  Addison, meanwhile, has picked a goal and five helpers in 19 games since being picked up last month in a trade with Minnesota.
  • Before tonight’s game against the Islanders, the Capitals announced (Twitter link) that forward Connor McMichael was a late scratch due to an illness. Matthew Phillips took his place.  McMichael is off to his best start, notching six goals and seven assists through his first 28 games; last season, he was limited to just six NHL contests, being held off the scoresheet.
  • Veteran forward Jaromir Jagr has officially started his 36th professional season, playing in his first game of the year with Kladno in his native Czechia, the team he owns. The 51-year-old played nearly 14 minutes, picking up an assist.  Jagr’s participation in that game will delay his Hockey Hall of Fame eligibility by another season.
  • The Canadiens will loan defenseman Nicolas Beaudin to Team Canada for the upcoming Spengler Cup, reports BPM Sports Radio’s Anthony Marcotte (Twitter link). The 24-year-old played in the event on a loan last year as well.  Beaudin, a 2018 first-round pick by Chicago, has been in and out of the lineup with AHL Laval this season, recording six assists in 13 games so far.
  • The Golden Knights announced (Twitter link) that goaltender Logan Thompson is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.  To get a second netminder on the roster for Thursday’s game against Carolina, Isaiah Saville was recalled from AHL Henderson.  Thompson has posted a .904 SV% in his first 19 games this season for Vegas while Saville, who was just activated from SOIR recently, has a .950 mark in three games with the Silver Knights.

Canada’s Spengler Cup Roster Announced

The annual Spengler Cup tournament begins on Monday, kicking off a competition that will see some of Europe’s top professional clubs do battle with each other and a delegation of Canadian players in order to win the tournament’s historic trophy. Today, the roster for Team Canada was announced, containing the following players from the following clubs:

Assembled by general manager Shane Doan and a collection of other members of a management team, Team Canada boasts an impressive list of players with significant, recent NHL experience. While the defense is more AHL-heavy than the other two groups, it still boasts a 360-game veteran in Connauton. In net, the cup could be a quality opportunity for DiPietro to put some solid play on tape after a rocky few seasons and be a chance for Hutchinson to solidify his resume as a quality third or fourth goalie.

The forward corps is where Canada is at its most impressive, including relatively well-known names such as Connolly, Ennis, Desharnais, Winnik, Eakin, Nash, and Sceviour. It’s a collection of talent that may be of a higher quality than some of the clubs they are competing against, although their relative lack of chemistry could pose a challenge.

With this lineup in hand, the Spengler Cup can be viewed as a quality opportunity for some players. Whether it’s a former prospect who headed to Europe after receiving little North American interest or a former NHL regular whose skills have declined to a point that made an exit to Europe inevitable, the Spengler Cup will afford a chance to any participant to show their talent on a major stage.

Snapshots: Three Stars, Niedermayer, Senators

The NHL released its Three Stars for last week, with Jason Robertson leading the way. The outstanding Dallas Stars forward racked up six goals and eight points in four games and is now just one point behind Connor McDavid for the league scoring lead. His 18 goals are first, and he continues to show that he’s ready to take over as the face of the Stars. With every goal he scores, the 2017 draft class from Dallas continues to look like the stuff of legends, with Robertson, Miro Heiskanen, and Jake Oettinger picked with the team’s first three selections.

Second and third place went to Josh Morrissey and Ilya Sorokin, respectively, who had their own incredible performances. The Winnipeg Jets Morrisey is tied for third in scoring among defensemen with 23 points on the year, and continues to put his name into the Norris Trophy conversation in his seventh NHL season. Sorokin meanwhile is well on his way to some more Vezina votes as he currently holds a .933 save percentage through 16 appearances.

  • Team Canada’s Spengler Cup squad will have some extra experience on hand this year, as Darren Dreger of TSN reports Scott Niedermayer will join the staff. The Hall of Famer will help the team’s defensemen, another signal that he may be considering a more serious career in hockey management. Earlier this year, Niedermayer was named special advisor to hockey operations for the Anaheim Ducks, where he was given an “advanced role” on Pat Verbeek’s staff. The 49-year-old retired in 2010 after 1,263 regular season games.
  • The Ottawa Senators have sent Lassi Thomson and Kevin Mandolese back to the AHL, given they don’t play again until Wednesday. They could be recalled again in the next few days, though Thomson did play just 9:18 in his appearance on Friday. Mandolese was recalled while Anton Forsberg dealt with a minor injury, meaning he likely won’t be back up unless another issue emerges.

Snapshots: Memorial Cup, Spengler Cup, Hanus

The CHL has officially announced the four clubs that have submitted applications to host the 2024 Memorial Cup. The Kingston Frontenacs, Niagara IceDogs, Saginaw Spirit, and Soo Greyhounds will send in bids before the deadline in January, with the winning club announced in March.

The tournament is moved through the leagues each year, meaning it was only open to OHL bids for 2024. The 2023 tournament will be held in Kamloops, British Columbia.

  • Team Canada has its leadership for the Spengler Cup decided, with Shane Doan managing the roster and Travis Green taking head coaching duties, according to Darren Dreger of TSN. Green is still under contract with the Vancouver Canucks, though he hasn’t coached since being fired in the middle of 2021-22.
  • The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have parted ways with Clay Hanus, as the undrafted defenseman has decided to leave pro hockey and accept the education package given by his former junior club. Hanus had only played two games – both at the ECHL level – since signing an AHL deal in the summer.

2021 Spengler Cup Cancelled Due To COVID-19

The 2021 Spengler Cup won’t be taking place due to COVID-19 cases affecting teams within the tournament, per The Hockey News’ Steven Ellis.

The tournament was set to begin tomorrow, December 26th. A severe number of cases today within the NL’s HC Davos organization, the hosts of the tournament, forced the cancellation after the Canadian national squad and HC Ambri-Piotta (NL) also backed out.

The Spengler Cup is the world’s oldest invitational hockey tournament, including six teams every year including Team Canada and HC Davos. This year, Frolunda HC (SHL), HC Slovan Bratislava (Slovak Extraliga), KalPa (Liiga), HC Sparta Praha (Czech Extraliga), and the Bern Selects were also scheduled to participate.

It’s the second straight year that the tournament has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

Bobby Ryan Headed To Spengler Cup

When Canada pulled out of the upcoming Spengler Cup, the tournament added a sixth team which would be known as the Bern Selects. The team that was chosen is made up of players from across the Swiss league mostly, but also has a familiar face to many NHL fans.

Bobby Ryan will participate in the tournament, listed as a free agent on the new squad. There are others who will also spark memories of the NHL, including Phil Varone, Lauri Korpikoski, and Cory Conacher, but Ryan is the biggest name in the group.

The 34-year-old scored 569 points in an 866-game NHL career, including 14 in 33 games for the Detroit Red Wings in 2020-21. He signed a professional tryout with the Red Wings again this year, but failed to receive an NHL contract by the end of camp.

That doesn’t mean his playing career is over though, as participation in the Spengler could actually hint at some further plans for Ryan. A member of the 2010 U.S. Olympic team that took home a silver medal in Vancouver, perhaps Ryan will get another chance to represent his country 12 years later. With the NHL expected to officially pull out of Olympic participation in the coming days, there will be a scramble for players at the minor league, European, and college levels. A strong showing at the Spengler would certainly make a case for Ryan to be on the team.
