Minor Transactions: 02/23/20

Yesterday was one of those days that can only be explained by a glitch in the matrix. The Bruins, Lightning, and Penguins – the NHL’s top three teams – were all blown out, while the Capitals lost to the lowly Devils and, if that wasn’t bad enough, Alex Ovechkin’s 700th career goal was overshadowed by another story line, which was a 42-year-old zamboni driver named David Ayres manning the net for the Hurricanes as an emergency backup and getting the win over his employer, the Maple Leafs. Will some of these teams overreact to these shocking results, especially on the eve of the trade deadline? It’s quite possible. One thing is for certain, roster tweaks could be in store for all involved. Many teams around the NHL could be making minor moves ahead of Monday’s big day, so keep up with all of the action here:

  • The Ottawa Senators have reassigned forwards Drake Batherson and Josh Norris to AHL Belleville, the team announced. While Batherson has been part of this up-and-down shuffle all year, playing in 23 games with Ottawa and 37 games with Belleville, Norris made his NHL debut on this recall. The Unvisersity of Michigan standout leads the AHL Senators with 58 points in 51 games this season.
  • The Minnesota Wild have recalled a pair of players as they deal with potential long-term injury absences. The team announced the promotion of forward Gerald Mayhew and defenseman Louis Belpedio, both of whom have seen NHL action before but could be in for a larger role this time around. The Athletic’s Michael Russo reports that defenseman Carson Soucy is out for at least one month, while forward Luke Kunin could miss 10-14 days minimum.
  • After recalling Sheldon Dries and Logan O’Connor on consecutive days, the Colorado Avalanche were faced with a decision on which to keep at the top level and which to return. The team has apparently opted to keep the youth and motor of O’Connor over the greater experience and scoring ability of Dries, as he has been reassigned to the AHL Eagles. Dries is one of the top point-getters for the Eagles this season, but has skated in just three games for the Avs compared to 40 last year. O’Connor has eight NHL games this year and 13 total, but has just one point to show for it. The University of Denver product does bring a lot of energy and speed to the lineup though.
  • Taylor Fedun is back with the Dallas Stars, as the team has promoted the veteran from his conditioning assignment with AHL Texas. Fedun has played in 27 games for the Stars this season, contributing nine points, but was a healthy scratch for ten games before being sent to Texas for conditioning earlier this month. Fedun will be a dependable depth option for Dallas down the stretch and in the playoffs.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights added some depth to their forward lines as they announced they have recalled Patrick Brown from the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. The 27-year-old was signed during the offseason away from the Calder Cup Charlotte Checkers, who defeated Chicago in the finals last season. He was brought in to provide a veteran presence for the team’s young prospects. He has six goals and 19 points in 54 games this season. Now, he gets his first opportunity in Vegas. Brown has 36 games of NHL experience, all with Carolina, where he has tallied just a goal and an assist.
  • The New York Islanders announced they have swapped forwards. The team has assigned veteran Andrew Ladd to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL. The team also have recalled forward Kieffer Bellows to the team, although Bellows, who was assigned Friday to Bridgeport, never left. He watched the last Islanders’ game in the press box, suggesting that he was expecting to be recalled immediately.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers announced they have recalled defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere from his conditioning stint with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL. The blueliner has missed 18 of the team’s last 19 games with a knee injury, but looks ready to return after a two-game stint in the AHL where he had one assist. The Flyers hope he can contribute immediately after a poor season so far where he’s seen his ATOI drop to a career low 18:21.
  • Kiefer Sherwood is back up with the Anaheim Ducks who announced that they have recalled him from AHL San Diego.  While he hasn’t seen any NHL time this season, he got into 50 games with Anaheim back in 2018-19, recording six goals and six assists.  In 37 games with the Gulls this season in the minors, he has 16 goals and seven helpers.

You can bet that there will be more trade action in the next couple of days, but right now several teams are likely just focused on their results from a night ago. The Florida Panthers, a team scratching and clawing to keep pace in the Atlantic Division, lost in regulation to the worst team in the Western Conference, while the Arizona Coyotes couldn’t figure out how to score a single goal to keep their playoff hopes alive. While the NHL assesses and recalculates, we’ll be here to keep track of all the minor moves.

  • The New York Islanders have recalled Andrew Ladd and Otto Koivula, while sending Kieffer Bellows back to the AHL. Cal Clutterbuck has also been moved to long-term injured reserve, but it’s actually a good sign—he’ll also head to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to begin a conditioning stint.
  • With another injury last night, the Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled Calvin Thurkauf under emergency conditions. Gabriel Carlsson has been sent back down. This time it is Oliver Bjorkstrand who suffered an injury when crashing into the boards, and Aaron Portzline of The Athletic spotted him leaving the arena on crutches.
  • With some forwards likely on their way out in the next few days, the Ottawa Senators have recalled Josh Norris from the minor leagues. A piece of the Erik Karlsson trade, Norris has excelled in his first season of professional hockey, recording 58 points in 51 games for the Belleville Senators in the AHL. He’ll likely get a chance to show what he can down down the stretch.

Trade Deadline Primer: New York Islanders

With the trade deadline now less than two weeks away, we will be taking a closer look at the situation for each team over the coming weeks.  Where do they stand, what do they need to do, and what assets do they have to fill those needs?  Next up is a look at the New York Islanders.

The New York Islanders have posted almost exactly the same numbers that they had at this point a year ago. However, the difference this year that the competition in the Eastern Conference is quite a bit more challenging and leaves the Islanders barely holding onto a playoff spot at the moment. However, perhaps the most challenging issue facing the Islanders was the injury to defenseman Adam Pelech. The blueliner never got much attention when healthy, but the top-pairing defenseman is being sorely missed and with Barry Trotz’ lack of faith in rookie Noah Dobson, the other five defenseman have been assuming extra minutes to fill in for Pelech, suggesting the team needs to add some help at that position in the next few days.

Trade Chips

With the team looking to make an impact in the playoffs, it’s unlikely that general manager Lou Lamoriello would consider moving any of his pending unrestricted free agents, which include forwards Matt Martin, Derick Brassard, Tom Kuhnhackl and goaltender Thomas Greiss. That doesn’t leave too many trade chips for the veteran GM to play with.

The team does have all of its draft picks for the next two years and might be willing to move a first or second-rounder to get a deal done and bring over some needed depth. Another key asset is the team’s cap space. They have more than $28MM in cap space, if they need it, and could use that to take on a significant contract from a cap-starved team for a price.

The team also has a large number of prospects coming up the system with many of them already in the AHL. While it’s unlikely that the team moves a top prospect, Trotz as well as Lamoriello, are well known for preferring veterans, which means they might not mind moving a prospect for a significant piece now and with the challenges of recruiting free agents to Long Island, they may have to include a young piece to acquire a player with term. A player like Kieffer Bellows, who was brought up recently likely to showcase his talents, could be an option if the price is right.

Another option would be finding a partner for embattled forward Joshua Ho-Sang. After demanding a trade and sitting out for two and a half months, the 24-year-old forward has played well since returning to the AHL Bridgeport Sound Tigers, scoring two goals and eight points in 12 games. Teams weren’t interested in H0-Sang when the team placed him on waivers, due to his well-known attitude issues, but a team might be willing to take a chance on him now just to see what he has left.

Team Needs

1) Veteran defense: With Pelech out and Dobson struggling in his rookie campaign, the Islanders are in desperate need of some veteran depth on their blueline and are extremely likely to add to that position before the trade deadline. While there are quite a few options available to Lamoriello, there are some obvious options, including a player that he is familiar with in Ottawa defenseman Ron Hainsey. With a group of young blueliners ready to step into their NHL lineup, Ottawa may be ready to move Hainsey.

2) Upgrade To Top-Six: While the team is well known for its defense, the Islanders could use an upgrade to their offense. New York has six solid players there, but adding some offense could allow the team to move some of those players to the third line, which hasn’t been that effective this season with the exception of Brassard. Again Lamoriello is quite familiar with Ilya Kovalchuk, who Montreal is considering moving, which might be a perfect fit with the Islanders. The team may also want to bring in a quality top-six player with term left who can be a significant long-term upgrade as well.

Cal Clutterbuck Undergoes Wrist Surgery, Out Indefinitely

The New York Islanders knew they were losing forward Cal Clutterbuck for a while after suffering a slash to his wrist by the skate of Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron on Thursday. However, after undergoing wrist surgery Friday to repair tendon damage, Clutterbuck is now out indefinitely, but the team expects him to return this season, according to Andrew Gross of Newsday.

“Cal Clutterbuck did have an operation to just repair a couple of little pieces,” Islanders president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said. “The cut was clean, no complications. It’s just going to be a matter of time when it heals. It was 100 percent successful. He will be back this season.”

Evidently, the injury could have been worse. Clutterbuck received stitches on Thursday night and was able to fly home before seeing a doctor and undergoing surgery. Lamoriello said there should be no long-term repercussions with his wrist once he returns.

The team has recalled veteran Andrew Ladd, who has been working his way back from injuries to both of his knees. The 34-year-old has seven goals and nine points in 19 AHL games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

It’s a busy Saturday around the league with 26 games in action.  Even with the roster freeze in effect, there will still be some roster shuffling as players are brought up to cover for injuries or returned if emergency recall conditions no longer exist.  We’ll keep tabs on those moves here.

  • The Islanders have recalled veteran winger Andrew Ladd from AHL Bridgeport, notes Arthur Staple of The Athletic (Twitter link). He’s taking the place of winger Cal Clutterbuck who underwent successful surgery today to repair a torn tendon and is out indefinitely.  Ladd started the season on LTIR as he worked his way back from an ACL tear.  Once cleared, he passed through waivers unclaimed and has played in 19 games with the Sound Tigers this season, recording seven goals and two assists.
  • Martin Marincin’s frequent travelling between the Maple Leafs and the AHL Marlies continues as Toronto announced (via Twitter) that they’ve sent the blueliner along with center Adam Brooks back to the minors. It’s the fifth demotion for Marincin since November 29th.  The two have been serving as injury insurance but will get an opportunity to get back into game action today at the minor league level.  While they weren’t up under emergency conditions, they were on regular recall after December 11th making them eligible to be demoted despite the roster freeze.

Andrew Ladd Placed On Waivers

Friday: Ladd has cleared waivers and will report to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Thursday: The New York Islanders have placed Andrew Ladd on waivers. Ladd recently finished a conditioning stint with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and was not in last night’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has not played a game for the Islanders this season. GM Lou Lamoriello explained the situation:

He’s played the maximum number of conditioning games–five games. He needs to play in games to see exactly where the strength is and where the liabilities are and so forth. So we’ll get him down, he’ll leave today to go up to Belleville and play this weekend at Belleville and Laval.

There’s no timetable. His play and physical fitness will determine that. 

Ladd is coming off a major knee injury and the Islanders obviously believe he’s not ready to compete in NHL games at this point. The veteran forward is apparently “very receptive” to this plan however as he tries to get his career back on track.

Signed to a seven-year, $38.5MM contract at the start of free agency in 2016, Ladd has managed just 71 points in 177 games with the Islanders over the last three seasons. While his value to a team has always stretched far beyond his offensive production—there’s something to be said about the experience of two Stanley Cups—the Islanders can’t rely entirely on intangibles. His contract carries a $5.5MM cap hit through the 2022-23 season and though they will get some savings (a prorated $1.075MM) with him buried in the minors, it looks like an anchor on their payroll at this point.

Injury Notes: Bourque, Little, Grubauer, Ladd

The Winnipeg Jets will not only be without Bryan Little for the next while, but the team announced today that Gabriel Bourque will be out for at least four weeks with a lower-body injury. Bourque had found a home at the bottom of the Winnipeg lineup, and even recorded a point in three consecutive games.

Little meanwhile suffered a perforated ear drum when he took the shot to the head earlier this week, and though he is expected to make a full recovery is dealing with vertigo at the moment. It is not clear when he will be ready to resume hockey activities.

More injury updates from around the league:

  • Philipp Grubauer will miss at least the next few games according to Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar, who told reporters that the goaltender tweaked a nagging injury. Pavel Francouz will get the net for the time being, though Grubauer is expected to travel with the team when they head to Canada next week.
  • Andrew Ladd’s conditioning stint with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers will be extended for another two games as he continues to recover from a knee injury. The veteran forward played just 26 games last season for the New York Islanders, but is under contract through the 2022-23 season.

It’s a very busy Saturday across the NHL with a total of 28 teams in action so there is likely to be plenty of roster movement throughout the day.  We’ll keep tabs on those here.

  • The Islanders announced (Twitter link) that they have placed winger Andrew Ladd on LTIR and have assigned him to Bridgeport of the AHL on a conditioning stint. The veteran has been out all season as he works his way back from ACL surgery.  The transfer to LTIR prior to the placement is noteworthy as that classifies the assignment as a Bona Fide Long-Term Injury Conditioning Loan.  That means Ladd will be down for a maximum of three games or six days unless the team petitions the Commissioner’s Office for a two-game extension if they believe more time is needed.
  • The Blue Jackets have recalled winger Kole Sherwood from AHL Cleveland and sent winger Jakob Lilja to the Monsters, per a team release. Lilja has had a sparing role with Columbus this season, logging less than nine minutes a night on their fourth line so this should be an opportunity to get him some more playing time.  Meanwhile, Sherwood is tied for second on Cleveland in goals in the early going this year; this will be his second career NHL stint after getting into a pair of games last season.
  • Peter Cehlarik is back up with Boston as the team announced his recall from AHL Providence. The winger saw action in one game last weekend with the Bruins before returning to Providence where he has ten points in seven games this season.  He’ll take the place of winger Brett Ritchie who won’t play tonight due to an infected cut.
  • The Stars have assigned winger Nicholas Caamano to AHL Texas, per the AHL’s Transactions Page.  The rookie has a goal in eight games with Dallas this season but is averaging less than ten minutes per game so this will be an opportunity for him to get some more playing time.  It also suggests that winger Blake Comeau is ready to return from injury.
  • The Canucks announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled defenseman Oscar Fantenberg from his conditioning loan with Utica (AHL).  He has yet to play with Vancouver this season which is why he agreed to go to the minors to get some game action in.  He suited up in two games with the Comets during that stretch.
  • CapFriendly reports that the Anaheim Ducks have assigned forward Max Jones to the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. The 21-year-old has played 12 games for Anaheim this season, but he has tallied just one assist in that time and recently saw his playing time decrease, including just playing 7:32 Friday night. A first-round pick in 2016, Jones will likely head back to San Diego to work on his all-around game and to build confidence back.
  • The Athletic’s Craig Morgan reports that the Arizona Coyotes have activated defenseman Jordan Oesterle from injured reserve after the 27-year-old missed the last six games with a head injury after taking a shot to the back of his head on Oct. 17 against Nashville. Oesterle is expected to play Saturday against Colorado. He has played in six games this year before the injury, picking up two assists in that span.

Islanders’ Martin, Kuhnhackl Out Four To Six Weeks

The New York Islanders have been dealing with injuries up front since the season began and that isn’t going to change any time soon. GM Lou Lamoriello spoke with the media this morning and The Athletic’s Arthur Staple relays the news that both Matt Martin and Tom Kuhnhackl will be out of the lineup with lower-body injuries for the next four to six weeks. The pair, who were both injured in the Islanders’ last game on Friday night, join Jordan Eberle, Leo Komarov, and Andrew Ladd on the shelf. The timeline would see Martin and Kuhnhackl return to action around when Ladd is also expected to be healthy, late November into early December.

Kuhnhackl was injured early in the first period on Friday against the Ottawa Senators when a crunching check left him favoring his right leg as he skated off the ice. There has been no specific designation of what his injury is, but it is certainly related to his left leg. Not long after that, Martin fell awkwardly into the Senators’ open bench door and appeared to injure his leg as well. With the Islanders already icing a lineup of eleven forwards and seven defensemen for the game, losing both Kuhnhackl and Martin would have left them with just nine forwards. Amazingly, given the recovery timeline of the injury he suffered, Martin returned to the game to avoid leaving New York with only three lines. Granted, he only managed 5:17 time on ice, but that was nearly double the lost Kuhnhackl. Perhaps even more impressive is that the Isles still came away with the 4-2 win over Ottawa despite the Senators outnumbering them by three healthy forwards.

Despite the prognosis for Martin and Kuhnhackl, Lamoriello stated that the team would not make a roster move right away. Staple provided updates that Komarov is considered day-to-day and Eberle has resumed skating, so the pair could return to action soon. While the Islanders wait for their now five-man group of veterans to recover, the team will lean on its younger forwards. New York scratched all three of Michael Dal Colle, Ross Johnston, and rookie Oliver Wahlstrom for their last game, but now the trio are all expected to join the starting roster for now. Fortunately, Casey Cizikas also just returned from the injured reserve and is able to help out. It will be entirely different looking bottom six when the Isles take the ice against the Philadelphia Flyers tonight and it could be a group that remains in flux through the next month or longer.

Injury Notes: Barkov, Little, Johnsson, Ladd, Simek, Paquette

Florida Panthers fans were quite worried Saturday when star player Aleksander Barkov skated off the ice during his second shift and did not return for the rest of the game. The Panthers deemed the injury as an upper-body injury and head coach Joel Quenneville refused to comment on it. However, The Athletic’s George Richards (subscription required) reports that general manager Dale Tallon referred to the injury as “minor.”

How Barkov was injured is a different story, as it doesn’t look as if Barkov took a hit, but the 24-year-old was seen clutching his side after an icing call on his second shift. He still lined up for the face-off, but looked to be in obvious pain. The team flew back to home last night and have Sunday off, with a home match against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.

  • The Winnipeg Jets are looking for some added punch to their lineup as TSN’s Brian Munz reports that center Bryan Little, who has been sidelined all season with a concussion, is expected to play Sunday against the Edmonton Oilers. The 31-year-old has served as the team’s second line center for quite some time. He scored 15 goals and 41 points last season.
  • Toronto Maple Leafs forward Andreas Johnsson was not at practice Sunday after blocking a Brandon Carlo shot Saturday and being forced out of the game and missing the third period, according to TSN’s Kristen Shilton. X-rays on Johnsson’s leg came back negative, suggesting the injury isn’t too serious and the forward isn’t expected to be out for long. The 24-year-old winger has two goals and five points in nine games with the Leafs so far.
  • The return of Andrew Ladd could be coming soon as Newsday’s Andrew Gross reports that the 33-year-old winger was skating in a regular practice jersey Sunday, after several practices in an orange non-contact jersey. Ladd is coming off a torn ACL and was limited to just 26 games last season. If healthy, Ladd could make some key contributions on the team’s bottom-six. He scored three goals and 11 points in those 26 appearances last year. Gross in a separate tweet, reports that both Jordan Eberle and Casey Cizikas, each on injured reserve with lower-body injuries, skated today, but separately from the rest of the team.
  • The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz reports that defenseman Radim Simek is expected to join the San Jose Sharks on their five-game road trip, but the blueliner said that he likely won’t play in any of those games due to his leg injury. He has been practicing so a return could come in the next few weeks, but his return to health has taken longer than the team expected.
  • NHL.com’s Bryan Burns reports that Tampa Bay Lighting forward Cedric Paquette is now considered to be day-to-day. The 26-year-old forward, out with an arm injury, hasn’t played a game this season yet, but could be close. Paquette scored a career-high 13 goals last season.
